Bishop’s Epistle

November 5, 2017 CHRISTIANS CANNOT TAKE COMMUNION, COMMUNION TAKES US!

BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE, GIVE YOURSELF TO JESUS! (John 12:35-50) Sons and Daughters, Grace to you! The central verse of my epistle text says: “But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe Him” (John 12:37). Verses 37-50 summarize the public ministry of Jesus Christ and explain the rejections which are equated with the rejection of God. (Isaiah 6:10, 53:1). God directed John to quote the Old Testament Scripture in Isaiah 6:9, to help us understand verse 40. “He said, go and tell this people; keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.” If you’re like most people, you trip over the words in verse 40 that quotes from Isaiah 6:9,10. a) Would God blind people’s eyes so they can’t see? b) Would He harden their hearts so they could not understand? c) These words say as much about human nature as they do about God’s judgment. We can resist so long that we get to a place where we can’t respond. “No!” to God’s overtures of love and guidance becomes a settled attitude. God created humanity with a free will and that will can become hardened. It hardens our hearts. We do it to ourselves. The people went so far as to say He was possessed by Satan, thus totally writing off what He said and the miracles He performed. Jesus calls this the unforgivable sin. The people did not believe there was anything to confess, so there was nothing to forgive. Their hearts were hardened and their eyes were blinded by habitual patterns of rejecting the rule of God in their lives. Isn’t that where many are today? What does this mean for how we are to live today? I suggest you think of each day as a miniature of your whole life. Make this day a willing obedience to the Lord. Say “yes” to His guidance and His love and forgiveness. Do that and you’ll never have to worry about the hardening of your spiritual heart. Just say to Him: “I will be willing! Amen Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-shepherd
