2015 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

2016 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES VOLLEYBALL

A

fter a breakthrough season for his program, Alaska Anchorage volleyball coach Chris Green has reloaded his roster for 2016. Now the Seawolves’ challenge will be to refocus as they set their sights on another Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. UAA is coming off a 27-3 campaign, an 18-2 GNAC record and a No. 13 ranking in the final AVCA’s final NCAA Div. II Top 25 poll – all program bests – but must replace 60 percent of the offense from that squad, including All-American hitters Katelynn Zanders and Julia Mackey. Luckily, the Seawolves have a returning All-American at setter in local product Morgan Hooe, along with four other proven veterans who saw action in almost every set last year. Add seven talented newcomers, and Green hopes his squad will be ready for battle when the ball goes up Aug. 25 in the seasonopener at BYU-Hawaii. Here’s a position-by-position look at this year’s Seawolves:

SETTER: Hooe – one of two seniors on the team – became the first Seawolf setter to earn All-America honors when she made the AVCA’s Third Team last year, along with All-GNAC accolades. The former South Anchorage High School star ranked second in the league with 10.56 assists per set, guiding a UAA offense that ranked 17th nationally with a .250 attack percentage and 37th with 13.52 kills per set. Her .286 individual hitting also was third-best on the team in 2015. An All-GNAC performer as a sophomore in 2014, Hooe begins her senior campaign No. 5 in total assists (2,519) and No. 6 in assists per set (8.15) on UAA’s career lists. Hooe will be backed up by true freshman Madison Fisher, who was an all-state prep performer in Colorado.

OUTSIDE/RIGHT-SIDE HITTER: Sophomore Leah Swiss appears ready to continue the tradition of talented local outside hitters to excel in Green & Gold after becoming just the second Seawolf freshman to earn AllGNAC honors. The 6-footer from Dimond High ranked 14th in the league in both points per set (3.30) and kills per set (2.62), and 4th in aces per set (0.37), while she was third on UAA with 2.64 digs per set. Swiss connected at .225 or better in 14 of 30 contests, produced six double-doubles and smashed a career-high 25 kills in UAA’s NCAA 2nd Round 5-set loss to Cal State San Bernardino, earning West Regional Championships AllTournament honors. Swiss will be joined on the outside by Colorado native Anais Vargas, one of the Seawolves’ two junior-college transfers. At 5-10, Vargas was an All-Region IX performer at Northeastern JC in 2015, finishing among

The sophomore duo of libero Kyla Militante-Amper (bo om) and outside hi er Leah Swiss is coming off a solid 2015 campaign. Swiss picked up All-GNAC honors as UAA won the league and earned its first-ever No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament.

the top 20 national leaders in kills at 4.19 kps. Chrisalyn Johnson – another Dimond grad – had an impressive spring season and will challenge for more playing time after appearing in 14 sets last year, while fellow sophomore Taylor Noga – from East Anchorage High – could see more swings after primarily playing on the back row as a rookie. On the right side, a pair of newcomers will vie to replace the slot vacated by Mackey’s graduation, with JC transfer Keala KaioPerez and true freshman Diana Fa’amausili both bringing impressive credentials. KaioPerez, originally from Oahu, owns an incredibly versatile game, having played right side as a freshman at Western Nebraska CC and libero as a sophomore on the 2015 NJCAA national title squad. Meanwhile, Green expects Fa’amausili to be one of the top freshmen in the GNAC, coming off a stellar prep career at Kent-Meridian High School in the SeattleTacoma area.

MIDDLE BLOCKER: With so many newcomers, fortunately Green has another battletested veteran to anchor the middle in senior Erin Braun. The San Bernardino, Calif., native was the GNAC Freshman of the Year in 2013 and honorable mention All-GNAC as a sophomore, before contributing 1.21 bps and

1.69 kps on .310 hitting for last year’s recordsetting team. Braun enters her final campaign No. 2 on UAA’s career attack percentage list at .305, along with No. 7 in total blocks (318) and No. 8 in bps (1.05). The competition figures to be strong for the other starting middle position. With sophomore Alex Garrett, who played in 14 sets last year, still recovering from off-season surgery, it will be up to one of three true freshmen – Vanessa Hayes, Kara Viotto or Fa’amausili – to fill that void. Hayes was an-league standout at McNary High in Salem, Ore., while Viotto earned All-Cook Inlet Conference honors at Eagle River High.

LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST: The Seawolves own more experience at a valuable spot with return of sophomore Kyla MilitanteAmper, who twice claimed GNAC Defensive Player of the Week honors her rookie season. The Oregon native registered at least 15 digs in 16 of the 24 matches in which she played the whole way, and averaged nearly six digs per set over the last six matches, finishing 5th in GNAC with 4.42 dps. With the addition of Kaio-Perez and the return of Noga – who filled in nicely when Militante-Amper was injured last year – Green should have ample options along the back row.

CHRIS GREEN Head Coach • 9th Season

H

aving led Alaska Anchorage to its unprecedented eighth straight winning season and the best campaign in program history in 2015, UAA head coach Chris Green continues to establish himself as one of the top mentors in the NCAA Div. II ranks. A three-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2009, 2013, 2015), Green has now led UAA to NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven seasons, capturing the program’s highest-ever seeds the past two years with a No. 2 in 2014 and a No. 1 in 2015. (In the 28 years before Green’s arrival, the Seawolves made just two NCAAs). UAA has won at a .784 clip for the last three campaigns, including a 44-8 (.846) mark in league play, finishing runner-up by just one match in both 2013 and ‘14, before capturing the GNAC crown in 2015. Green was also the 2015 AVCA West Region Coach of the Year, winning that award for the second time. The 2014 campaign saw Green’s Seawolves finish 21-6, establishing school records for best winning percentage (.778) and fewest losses – only to be topped by last year’s 27-3 mark, which also set the record for most victories. Katelynn Zanders was the GNAC Player of the Year and fellow senior Julia Mackey became the first Seawolf to earn First Team All-America honors as UAA reached the NCAA Second Round. Under Green’s tutelage, the Seawolves have now produced three GNAC Players of the Year (Calli Scott, 2009; Jackie Matthisen, 2011; Zanders, 2015), six All-Americans, five GNAC Newcomers of the Year, two GNAC Freshmen of the Year, 12 All-West Region performers and 22 All-GNAC Team honorees. Green’s 2010 and 2011 squads recorded identical 18-9 marks and advanced to the NCAAs, with the 2011 team coming just one win shy of sharing the GNAC title. After being picked to finish seventh in the 2009 GNAC preseason coaches’ poll, UAA wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a school-record 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coach-of-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the thenbest winning percentage (.742) and posted the second-most victories in program history (23). UAA capped its historic 2009 season by winning its first-ever NCAA match, upsetting Hawaii-Hilo in a 5-set thriller. In 2008, Green took the reins of a Seawolf program that had gone 17-58 over the previous three campaigns and produced a solid 15-14

mark, along with the program’s first All-American in senior Rhea Cardwell. Following four straight NJCAA Final 4 appearances and the 2007 national title at Western Nebraska Community College, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. Green built a powerhouse program in his nine seasons at WNCC, compiling a 453-55 record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I championship. The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Green’s seasons. In his final three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. In 2011, Green was inducted into the NJCAA’s Hall of Fame (encompassing all sports) for his accomplishments at WNCC. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

SHELDON CARVALHO Assistant Coach 2nd Season

A

fter helping UAA to the best season in program history in his first campaign, Sheldon Carvalho is back as head coach Chris Green’s top assistant again in 2016. Last fall, Carvalho was an integral part of the Seawolves’ program-best 27-3 record and Great Northwest Athletic Conference title run. Under his tutelage, UAA produced four first-team All-GNAC honorees, three All-Americans and captured the top seed for the NCAA West Regional Championships. Behind the scenes, Carvalho spearheads UAA’s recruiting efforts, helping land a deep and talented class to bolster the lineup in 2016. Carvalho came to UAA after serving two seasons as head coach of American Leadership Academy, a high school program in Spanish Fork, Utah, where his teams posted top-4 regional finishes and made the Class 2A State Tournament in 2013 and 2014. He also coached at ALA from 2008-09, leading the school to its first-ever appearance at State. In between those stints, Carvalho was the head coach at JC program Western Texas College from 2010-12, collecting three consecutive 20-win seasons and a 67-40 overall record. At WTC, his 2011 and 2012 squads were the NJCAA Region V champions and made the national tournament. Carvalho coached two All-Americans, four all-conference players and helped WTC to its first-ever national ranking – reaching as high as No. 11. He was honored as the District E Junior College Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2012. Carvalho took his first head coaching job in 2007 at Kahuku High School in his home state of Hawaii, leading his team to an Oahu island championship and a 14-2 record. He broke into the coaching profession at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, where was a student assistant on the Seasiders’ 1996 and 1997 NAIA national championship clubs, and helped legendary

head coach Wilfred Navalta with the 2000, 2004 and 2005 teams that played at the NCAA Div. II level. As a player, Carvalho lettered four years at Kauai High School before spending one season on the men’s club team at BYU-Hawaii. He earned a B.A. in secondary math education from Brigham Young (Utah) University in 2004 and a masters in counseling psychology from Chaminade University in 2008.

ormer UAA star Calli Scott is back with the Seawolf coaching staff for her second season as the program’s graduate assistant coach in 2016. A setter in her playing days, Scott performed a key role last year in helping head coach Chris Green and the Seawolves achieve the best record in program history (27-3) and reach the NCAA Tournament Second Round. She was also instrumental in the development of first-team All-GNAC pick Morgan Hooe, who became the first setter in program history to earn All-America honors. As a player, Scott became the first Seawolf to earn the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year award, along with first-team All-West Region and honorable mention All-American accolades as a senior in 2009. Among her other accomplishments, UAA’s career record-holder for assists per set (10.64) piloted her team to the GNAC title and its first-ever NCAA Tournament Second Round berth as a senior. Scott was also the 2008 GNAC Newcomer of the Year and UAA’s 200910 Bill MacKay Athlete of the Year. Before coming north, the Phoenix native was a two-year standout at Glendale Community College, where she played both setter and libero.

UAA ADMINISTRATION

2016 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES VOLLEYBALL CHANCELLOR

TOM CASE

T

om Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace

Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending. Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, sonin-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

KEITH HACKETT

E

ntering his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2016-17, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented success. All told during his tenure, the Seawolves’ D-II programs have qualified for NCAA postseason competition at a 90 percent rate, producing 69 All-Americans, five Academic All-Americans®, 14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, plus NCAA top-3 finishes in men's cross country (2015) and women's basketball (2016 runner-up). Even more impressively, UAA student-athletes have continued their tradition of academic excellence under Hackett’s leadership, combining for better than a 3.15 overall grade-point average in each of his years at the helm. In the past three years, the Seawolves have also finished among the top programs in NCAA Div. II in the NACDA Learfield Directors’ Cup. In 201516, UAA finished No. 8 in the final standings out of 307 D-II schools nationally. Under Hackett’s leadership, the department has developed a strategic plan that lists the highest priorities for continued growth and development. These strategic priorities guide and direct many of the Seawolf Athletic Department’s decisions. Meanwhile, student-athlete success and the studentathlete experience are his highest priorities. Creating college graduates, honorable citizens and young people who are prepared to lead and succeed in life after they leave UAA are at the core of the department’s mission. A university and administrative management executive with 39 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement. Hackett has developed partnerships with industry leader Spectra to manage the Alaska Airlines Center and UAA’s ticketing operations; Learfield Sports – the industry leader in media rights and sponsorships; and Basketball Travelers, which assists UAA in developing the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Hackett has worked closely with corporate partners GCI and Alaska Airlines – and national TV partner CBS Sports Network – to bolster the vitality of UAA’s most visible event, the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Other priorities that Hackett has targeted include external relations and development, revenue generation, and a significant focus on the ‘Seawolf Fan Experience.’ Since his arrival, over $4 million has been raised for facility projects and direct support to Seawolf sports teams. Hackett came to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive VP for Special Projects and Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive VP and Provost at St. Gregory’s from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 40 years and have two adult children, Katie and James, and six grandsons.

UAA’s student-athletes, the beating heart of #SeawolfNation, compete in 13 NCAA collegiate sports. At the Division I level, UAA fields a men’s ice hockey team and a women’s gymnastics team. Competing in Division II are men’s and women’s basketball, cross country running, skiing and indoor and outdoor track & field teams, as well as our women’s volleyball team. True student-athletes, our Seawolves maintained a 3.24 GPA last year across all teams, while producing seven conference titles, nine NCAA finishes, 28 All-Americans and placing No. 8 of 307 schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a state-of-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that is shared by the Anchorage community. The AAC is the home for the GCI Great Alaska Shootout and has already played host to the NCAA Div.
