2013 ALASKA ANCHORAGE GYMNASTICS

ith four proven returners and one of the largest recruiting classes in Alaska Anchorage gymnastics history, head coach Paul Stoklos is exciting about his program’s prospects in 2013 and beyond. The Seawolves enter their 10th campaign at the Div. I level this January with 10 new faces in the lineup, including one redshirt and nine true freshmen. “Last year our freshmen carried the team,” said Stoklos, who has piloted the program through its entire existence. “Now they are performing at a high level for us and providing veteran leadership. There are obviously some great opportunites for some of our freshmen to prove they belong at this level.” The veteran core of the team starts with junior captain Emily Petersen, who set UAA’s program record with a 9.679 average on uneven bars last year. The Indianapolis native also produced the team’s second-best balance beam average, boosted by a career-high 9.825 vs. Michigan State. She will be joined by a trio of sophomores who return after playing huge roles as rookies – Morgan Cook, Sariaye Jensen and Paige Pirie. Cook was an NCAA Regionals allaround qualifier with a 37.345 RQS in 2012, and one of three Seawolves to compete in all 11 regular-season meets. The Hot Springs, Ark., product comes into 2013 with careerhighs of 9.7 on vault, 9.775 on floor, 9.8 on beam and 38.400 all-around. Meanwhile, Jensen competed allaround a team-high nine times, earning AllMountain Pacific Sports Federation honors on both bars and all-around. The Las Vegas native had the 10th-best bars average in program history at 9.540, tallying a season-high 9.75 on three occasions. Pirie returns after peaking at the end of her freshman season, including marks of 9.625 on floor against Michigan State and 9.45 on bars at MPSFs. Also back is redshirt freshman Chelsey Baker, who missed the 2012 season after suffering a knee injury in the preseason. “We are glad to have Chelsey healthy and back in the lineup,” Stoklos said. “She has worked hard to get ready to compete and is solid on vault and beam.” In recruiting, Stoklos went to six farflung states and two foreign countries to compile his nine-woman freshman class. Austrian Simone Penker appears ready to make an immediate impact in the all-around after competing on the European circuit along with fellow newcomer MarieSophie Boggasch, from Germany. Also looking to crack the lineup will be Randi Cutolo (South Jordan, Utah) on floor, Mattie Gamble (Raleigh, N.C.) on vault and floor, Nicole Wetzel (Keller, Texas) on beam and floor, and Julia York (Mission Viejo, Calif.) on vault and floor. “I’m extremely excited about the potential of this group,” Stoklos added. “Stefany Bryan has great all-around skills when she is

fully healthy, and Simone Penker has come in ready to practice and compete at a high level. Julia York has shown explosiveness on vault and Nicole Wetzel is one of the most coachable athletes we have ever had. That being said, any one of the others could break through as well.” The Seawolves will host three home meets in 2013, Jan. 25-26 against MPSF rival Seattle Pacific and Feb. 17 against Eastern Michigan. UAA will also take on its usual challenging road schedule, with trips planned to Connecticut, New Jersey, Louisiana, Michigan and Washington.

PAUL STOKLOS Head Coach  29th Season

he only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 29th season in 2013. Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I over the past decade, boosting the team’s talent to its highest level ever. The 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004, including six of the top seven marks from 2008-11. In 2009, Stoklos’ squad won its first-ever conference title when it captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Colorado Springs. Individually, Stoklos has qualified 11 Seawolf gymnasts to the NCAA West Regional all-around competition, and produced nine MPSF event titlists. II Academic All-Americans Academic All-Americans 2004 MPSF Coach of the Year at the Division II level. 2005 MPSF Co-Coach of the Year Success in recent sea2009 MPSF Champions sons has come from a continued refinement of the UAA program. At the end of each season, Stoklos and his squad make adjustments to the training process which allows them to improve both in the gym and in the classroom. Team performance is important to Stoklos, who wants his gymnasts to think of their routines in terms of an overall team effort. Topping his list of student-athlete priorities, however, is academics, evidenced by the fact that his team consistently produces All-American Scholar certificates. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a coach as an undergraduate and graduate assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years. He helped bring a fledgling gymnastics program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol during the winter months. He enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos is also a longtime member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.

TAMI MONETTE Assistant Coach  18th Season

n her 18th season as assistant coach for the Seawolves in 2013, Tami Monette has become an integral part of the program. Monette was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 for the third time, repeating the honor she shared in 2006 and won outright in 2005. Monette has an extensive background in gymnastics as a competitor, head coach, compulsory judge and club owner. She has served two stints as head coach for the Anchorage Gymnastics Association, from 1993-95 and from 1978-85. Monette currently serves as an age-group director at the state level. She is USA safety-certified and has served as a judge at levels five through seven. She has placed gymnasts on Region II teams to Nationals from 1985 through 1995.

essica Monette begins her first season on coach Paul Stoklos’ staff as an assistant coach in 2013. An accomplished dancer and choreographer, Monette formerly taught dance in her hometown of Wenatchee, Wash. Her primary duties with the Seawolves involve choreography for the team’s floor routines. Monette earned her associate’s degree in nursing from Wenatchee Valley College.

CHRIS VOLK Athletic Trainer  19th Season

ead athletic trainer Chris Volk is in her 19th season with the UAA Athletic Department. Volk cares for the treatment and prevention of injuries to Seawolf studentathletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office. A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986. She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. She and her husband Rick are the parents of three children — Megan, Cody and Casey.

2013 ALASKA ANCHORAGE GYMNASTICS

he Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universities in the western United States, providing championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. In women’s gymnastics, the league is comprised of four institutions -- the University of Alaska Anchorage, UC Davis, Seattle Pacific and the U.S. Air Force Academy. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation, to contain the costs of competition, and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. It has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In 2011-2012, the Federation celebrated its 20th year of competition, and today the MPSF is more relevant than at any other time since its inception. As a testament to its viability, the federation continues to successfully ride the ever-changing wave of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion to meet the dynamic needs of its member institutions and conferences. Since its inception, MPSF teams have won 69 NCAA team championships and numerous individual titles as well. In 2012-13, the MPSF will again provide competition in 13 Olympic sports while serving approximately 1,800 student-athletes on 99 teams from 41 universities in 14 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF champions earn automatic NCAA Championships bids in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball.

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

AA hosts its home meets on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The newly refurbished gym, which has housed Seawolf gymnastics, basketball and volleyball since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Seawolf gymnasts also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. The Seawolves train off-campus at the Anchorage Gymnastics Association facility in Midtown. UAA gymnastis have exclusive use of the AGA gym for practice. The facility offers 12 competition beams, four sets of uneven bars and two spring floors, as well as a loose foam pit for vaulting, tumbling and bars. The gym includes almost 23,000 square feet of training space.

n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in collegiate sports. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature. According to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

TOM CASE

Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

In 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances for Seawolf basketball teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field (four times). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in NCAA Div. II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the Final 4. In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div. II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State.

ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 181 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 16 individual national champions since 1991. In its 35th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2011-12. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by women’s basketball, both men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and men’s track & field. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 15 of the last 18 years.

ith city boundaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 290,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Hundreds of flights arrive daily at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, shuttling about 5 million passengers per year through the heart of one of the world’s top tourism destinations. Anchorage is a recreational paradise, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved

and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, it is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. In fact, the Chugach is one of six mountain ranges visible from Anchorage. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach, Anchorage is located in a relatively temperate zone, with a climate that resembles San Francisco in

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses, along with the state’s six other National Parks.

the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 15-20 degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 moose, many often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here while red and king salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
