ith no seniors and only one upperclassmen among the team’s dozen competitors in 2014, the Seawolves plan to make up for their lack of collegiate experience with one of the largest influxes of young talent in program history. “Our freshmen really had to step into a leadership role immediately last year, and this year will be no different,” said Stoklos, who enters his 30th season as the only coach UAA has ever known. “I think our sophomore class is excited to have that year of experience under their belts and prove they can lift our program to be among the top contenders in our league for future seasons.” Leading the way will be the team’s most veteran performer in junior Morgan Cook. The Arkansas native was an NCAA Regional all-around qualifier as a freshman in 2012 and last year earned All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors on balance beam with a 9.695 RQS. “Morgan is an awesome three-event competitor and may be back on bars as well, giving us four potential all-arounders,” said Stoklos, who citing sophomores M’rcy Matsunami, Simone Penker and Stefany Bryan. Matsunami burst onto the scene last year with school-record season averages in the all-around (38.539) and on bars (9.686), while earning a trip to NCAA Regionals on vault. The Nebraskan earned 10 individual victories as a rookie and was All-MPSF on vault, floor and all-around. Meanwhile, Penker’s all-around average of 37.975 tied for 11th all-time at UAA, boosted by a season-best 38.450 score on two occasions. The Austrian is a member of her country’s national team. Bryan, a Seattle product, excelled on bars and floor last year, helping the Seawolves set the school record for team bars average. She has added a vault and improved beam routine in the off-season. Two more event specialists – MarieSophie Boggasch and Nicole Wetzel – return for their sophomore years as well. Boggasch, from Germany, posted top15 all-time program ranks on vault and bars last year, and Stoklos says she has the potential to be one of the strongest vaulters in Seawolf history. Wetzel had the team’s third-best floor average (9.400) and is one of the squad’s most consistent beam workers, nailing a season-high of 9.7 last year. With junior Sariaye Jensen and sophomore Kayli Davies set to redshirt with injuries, redshirt freshman Julia York in the team’s final returnee from 2013, and Stoklos is thrilled about her progress enter-

M’rcy Matsunami ing this year. “Julia really made an amazing effort to earn a spot with her training in the offseason,” he said. “She could see regular action on both floor and vault.” Four of UAA’s five incoming freshmen will be heavily relied upon to fill in gaps on specialty events, with all of the newcomers hailing from the West Coast. Washington natives Kelsy Konkright and Nicole Larkin should both lend a boost to UAA on floor, while Stoklos calls hometown addition Kallie Randolph’s floor exercise of the most dynamic and fun rou-
tines he has seen. Brice Mizell, from Mill City, Ore., should compete for time on bars and add additional depth on floor. Southern California freshman Molly Reiter also joins the squad and will redshirt. The Seawolves will host five home meets in 2014, Jan. 24 & 26 against Temple, Feb. 16 vs. MPSF rival UC Davis, and Feb. 28/Mar. 2 against Lindenwood. The MPSF Championships are set for Mar. 22 in Davis, Calif., with the additions of San Jose State and Sacramento State boosting the league’s membership to six teams.

PAUL STOKLOS Head Coach l 30th Season
T
he only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 30th season in 2014. Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I over the past decade, boosting the team’s talent to its highest level ever. The 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004, including eight of the top nine marks since 2008. In 2009, Stoklos’ squad won its first-ever conference title when it captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Colorado Springs. Individually, Stoklos has qualified 13 Seawolf gymnasts to the NCAA West Regional Championships – including M’rcy Matsunami in 2013 – and produced nine MPSF event titlists. THE STOKLOS FILE Stoklos’ gymnasts have also produced in the class- Hometown: Brookfield, Wis. Education: B.S., General Studies, room, topping the MPSF Univ. of Arizona, 1981; All-Academic Team in M.S., Exercise Science, 2010 with 10 honorees Arizona, 1984 and finishing eighth in the Head Coaching Achievements nation last year in overall (UAA, 1985-present) team GPA at 3.58. Has coached... From the program’s 3 USAG National Champions (5 titles) inception in 1985 until 12 All-Americans (39 awards) becoming a full-fledged 13 NCAA West Regional Qualifiers Division I program in 37 Div. II Academic All-Americans 2004, Stoklos’ program 2004 MPSF Coach of the Year produced three USAG 2005 MPSF Co-Coach of the Year national champions, 12 2009 MPSF Champions All-Americans and 37 Academic All-Americans at the Division II level. Success in recent seasons has come from a continued refinement of the UAA program. At the end of each season, Stoklos and his squad make adjustments to the training process which allows them to improve both in the gym and in the classroom. Team performance is important to Stoklos, who wants his gymnasts to think of their routines in terms of an overall team effort. Topping his list of student-athlete priorities, however, is academics, evidenced by the fact that his team consistently produces All-American Scholar certificates. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a coach as an undergraduate and graduate assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years. He helped bring a fledgling gymnastics program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol during the winter months. He enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos is also a longtime member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.
TAMI MONETTE Assistant Coach l 19th Season
I
n her 19th season as assistant coach for the Seawolves in 2014, Tami Monette has become an integral part of the program. Monette was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 for the third time, repeating the honor she shared in 2006 and won outright in 2005. Monette has an extensive background in gymnastics as a competitor, head coach, compulsory judge and club owner. She has served two stints as head coach for the Anchorage Gymnastics Association, from 1993-95 and from 1978-85. Monette currently serves as an age-group director at the state level. She is USA safety-certified and has served as a judge at levels five through seven. She has placed gymnasts on Region II teams to Nationals from 1985 through 1995.

essica Monette enters her second season on coach Paul Stoklos’ staff as an assistant coach in 2014. An accomplished dancer and choreographer, Monette formerly taught dance in her hometown of Wenatchee, Wash. Her primary duties with the Seawolves involve choreography for the team’s floor routines. Monette earned her associate’s degree in nursing from Wenatchee Valley College.
CHRIS VOLK Athletic Trainer l 20th Season
H
ead athletic trainer Chris Volk is in her 20th season with the UAA Athletic Department. Volk cares for the treatment and prevention of injuries to Seawolf studentathletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office. A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986. She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. She and her husband Rick are the parents of three children — Megan, Cody and Casey.

he Seawolves turned in one of the best seasons in program history in 2013, with their season average score of 191.190 among 17 newly established school records. UAA also set season marks on vault, beam and floor, while freshman M’rcy Matsunami broke the individual all-around average mark at 38.539. In January, UAA earned its first-ever dual victory against longtime rival Seattle Pacific, and in February the Seawolves closed out their home season with their second-highest score ever at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex with a 192.850 against Eastern Michigan. Matsunami earned three All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors, while junior Emily Petersen earned a pair and sophomore Morgan Cook had one.

T
he Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universities in the western United States, providing championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. In women’s gymnastics, the league is expanding this year backt to six institutions, adding Sacramento State and San Jose State to the current membership of Air Force, Alaska Anchorage, Seattle Pacific and UC Davis. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation, to contain the costs of competition, and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. It has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In 2011-2012, the Federation celebrated its 20th year of competition, and today the MPSF is more relevant than at any other time since its inception. As a testament to its viability, the federation continues to successfully ride the ever-changing wave of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion to meet the dynamic needs of its member institutions and conferences. Since its inception, MPSF teams have won 73 NCAA team championships and numerous individual titles. In 2013-14, the MPSF will again provide competition in 12 Olympic sports while serving approximately 1,800 student-athletes on 87 teams from 36 universities in nine western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF champions earn automatic NCAA Championships bids in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball.
The Seawolves celebrated the program’s first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title in 2009.

F
or the final season in 2014, UAA will host its home meets in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The refurbished gym, which has housed Seawolf gymnastics, basketball and volleyball since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. After training at the Anchorage Gymnastics Association facility off-campus since the inception of the program, UAA Gymnastics will move into the state-of-theart Alaska Airlines Center in fall of 2014, where the Seawolves will train and host their meets.

THE SEAWOLF
n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in collegiate sports. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature. According to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

KEITH HACKETT
A
university and administrative management executive with 36 years of higher education experience, Keith Hackett begins his first year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2013-14. Hackett comes to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities with specific teams, Hackett was involved with donor relations and major gifts, budget, human and physical resource management, and alumni and community relations at Nevada. As a key member of the Wolf Pack’s senior leadership team, he was responsible for oversight of all athletics department capital projects, development of the department’s first athletic facilities master plan, and event management for all home contests. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive Vice President for Special Projects and was Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive Vice President and Provost at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla., from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 37 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the Univer sity’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addic tion Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS
Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as
members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 184 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 19 individual national champions since 1991. In its 36th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2012-13. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from nine of their 13 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and women’s outdoor track & field. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 16 of the last 19 years, including a record 3.20 mark in calendar year 2012.

ith city boundaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 290,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Hundreds of flights arrive daily at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, shuttling about 5 million passengers per year through the heart of one of the world’s top tourism destinations. Anchorage is a recreational paradise, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved
and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, it is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. In fact, the Chugach is one of six mountain ranges visible from Anchorage. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach, Anchorage is located in a relatively temperate zone, with a climate that resembles San Francisco in

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses, along with the state’s six other National Parks.
the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 15-20 degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 moose, many often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here while red and king salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
