W

ith an accomplished core of returning starters, Alaska Anchorage head coach Chris Green hopes to have the 2013 Seawolf volleyball team back in the hunt for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and an NCAA playoff berth. Last year’s Seawolves finished 16-10 for the program’s fifth straight winning campaign, although they fell just short of a fourth consecutive NCAA berth. Led by steady seniors Siobhan Johansen and Jodi Huddleston, plus a talented group of returning sophomores, this year’s squad is now anxious to write its own chapter in UAA’s recent run of success. “Some of our best players last year were either freshmen or transfers,” said Green, whose Seawolves have also posted top-4 GNAC finishes for the last four years. “They experienced some successes, but also learned from the tough times, and the maturity they gained was very valuable.” This year’s lone 4th-year senior is Johansen, who has played in virtually every set of her career, whether at setter, libero or defensive specialist. A key part of UAA’s 2010 and 2011 NCAA Tournament teams, the Palmer (Colony HS) product gives Green a veteran presence in any position. Already among the program’s all-time leaders in assists (959) and digs (743), Johansen is on the verge of becoming the fifth Seawolf to top the 1,000 plateau in both categories. Huddleston returns after capturing the GNAC’s Newcomer of the Year award and honorable mention All-GNAC honors in 2012. The 6-1 middle blocker ranked seventh in the league with a .284 attack percentage and posted 0.69 blocks per set. The former Western Nebraska CC transfer hit .300 or better on 11 occasions in her Seawolf debut season, seeing action in every set. Up front, Huddleston is flanked by an impressive array of sophomore hitters, including reigning GNAC Freshman of the Year and All-GNAC pick Julia Mackey, and fellow former Alaska prep stars Katelynn Zanders and Sarah Johnson. A 5-11 right-side hitter, Mackey posted GNAC top-10 ranks in kills per set (3.13) and points per set (3.48) as a rookie, while hitting a solid .251. The Fairbanks (West Valley HS) product tallied double-digit kills in 19 of 26 matches, including a season-best 18 against MSU Billings. Meanwhile, former South Anchorage teammates Zanders and Johnson emerged as dangerous weapons at outside hittee. Zanders, 5-9, led the team and ranked seventh in the GNAC with 3.18 kills per set, smashing a UAA season-high 25 against Cal State Monterey Bay. Johnson, 6-1, was one

of the top all-around rookies in the league, averaging 2.98 digs and 2.41 kills, along with a team-high nine double-doubles. Also returning up front for their second seasons are junior Maureen Sabado and sophomore Breanne Sytnyk. Following a redshirt season in 2011, Sabado played in 13 matches last year, leading the team with 1.05 blocks per set. At 5-9, Kodiak native can play either middle or right-side. Sytnyk, a 6-footer from Manitoba, emerged as a true freshman to contribute 0.84 blocks and a .233 attack percentage. The team’s seven newcomers are comprised of three junior-college transfers and four true freshmen, including another pair of former Alaska prep stars. Juniors Brooke Pottle, a 5-8 OH/DS, and Quinn Barker, a 5-4 libero, bring the most experience after standout careers in the Arizona Community Colleges Athletic Conference. Pottle, who played her freshman season at Div. I Air Force, was a 2nd Team All-ACCAC performer at Glendale

CC in 2012 after averaging 2.33 kills and 3.91 digs. Barker, originally from Southern California, looks to take over as the Seawolves’ full-time libero after averaging 4.04 digs at Central Arizona CC last season. Sophomore Caitlin McInerney also brings a year of JC experience, having averaged 1.02 blocks per set at Western Wyoming CC last season. The 5-11 middle blocker was the Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior at Laramie High School in 2011. Meanwhile, another former South Anchorage standout, Morgan Hooe, spearheads the strong freshman class. A 5-7 setter, Hooe was the 2011 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year and a 4-year starter for the Wolverines’ powerhouse squads. Up front, 6-foot middle blockers Erin Braun (San Bernardino, Calif.) and Sydney Blankinship (Portland, Ore.) will push the veterans, while Juneau product Chelsea Peterson, a 5-8 outside hitter/defensive specialist, adds another versatile presence.

CHRIS GREEN Head Coach • 6th Season

I

n five seasons at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage volleyball program, head coach Chris Green has led the Seawolves to one of the most remarkable turnarounds in collegiate volleyball, culminating with three straight NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The 2012 campaign saw Green’s Seawolves finish 16-10, marking the program’s unprecedented fifth straight winning season. With its 11-7 GNAC record, UAA placed fourth or higher in the 10-team league for the fourth straight year as well, while producing the conference’s Newcomer of the Year (Jodi Huddleston) and Freshman of the Year (Julia Mackey). Green has now coached two All-Americans, three honorable mention All-Americans, two GNAC Players of the Year, three GNAC Newcomers of the Year, one Freshman of the Year, and eight All-GNAC First Team selections in his tenure. The 2010 and 2011 squads recorded identical 18-9 marks and advanced to the NCAAs, with the 2011 team coming just one win shy of sharing the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. After being picked to finish seventh in the 2009 GNAC preseason poll, Green’s squad wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a school-record 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coach-of-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the best winning percentage (.742), posted the second-most victories in program history (23) and won their firstever NCAA match, upsetting Hawaii-Hilo in a 5-set thriller. In 2008, Green took over a UAA club that had won just five matches the previous campaign, producing a solid 15-14 mark. The Seawolves captured the title of their own UAA Invitational and recorded their first win over a ranked team in almost a decade when they beat then-No. 8 Augustana. Under Green’s tutelage, outside hitter Rhea Cardwell became UAA’s first volleyball All-American. After four straight national semifinals appearances and the 2007 national title, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. Before becoming the sixth coach UAA history, he spent the previous nine seasons (1999-07) as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb. Green built a powerhouse program at WNCC, compiling a 453-55 record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I national champion-

In his final three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 firstteam and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. In 2011, Green was inducted into the NJCAA’s Hall of Fame (encompassing all sports) for his accomplishments at WNCC. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

Green and the Seawolves celebrated their first GNAC tle in 2009.

Founded in 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 71 NCAA Division II top 10 national team finishes in 14 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The 2012-13 academic year was another banner season for the league, highlighted by top-4 NCAA finishes for UAA’s men’s cross country team (3rd), Simon Fraser’s men’s soccer team, and Western Washington’s basketball squads. Along with later additions Montana State Billings (2007) and Simon Fraser (2010), the GNAC is comprised of charter members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington. In the last six years, the GNAC has produced two national team titles (2009 SPU women’s soccer, 2012 WWU men’s basketball), three national runner-up finishes, six NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (including three by UAA), and top-5 NCAA cross country placings by both SPU and UAA (both men and women’s squads). UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

T

he Seawolves host their home matches on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. 2013 ALASKA ANCHORAGE VOLLEYBALL Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

T

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 184 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 19 individual national champions since 1991. In its 36th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2012-13. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from nine of their 13 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and women’s outdoor track & field. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 16 of the last 19 years, including a record 3.20 mark in calendar year 2012.
