LINK UP: SEATT THE ORCHESTRA MOVES

Link Up: Seattle Symphony invites students in grades 3–5 to join the orchestra in an interactive and engaging program. Students learn to sing and play orchestral repertoire through the hands-on Link Up curriculum, then perform along with the Seattle Symphony from their seats in a highly participatory concert at Benaroya Hall. During the 2015–2016 season, Link Up will feature Link Up: The Orchestra Moves where students will discover how composers and musicians move music through melodies and motifs, and how music can move us. Exploring a range of orchestral repertoire, students will sing, play the recorder and/or the violin, compose and perform in a culminating concert in May, 2016. Repertoire highlights include: Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro Overture, Strauss’ The Blue Danube, Bizet’s “Toreador” from Carmen and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. One chaperone is required for every 10 students; chaperones are not charged. Beyond the 10 to 1 student–chaperone ratio, the cost is $10 per additional adult. Teachers are free.

SCIENCE OF SOUND: THE ORCHESTRA MOVES
Discover great symphonic stories such as Peter and the Wolf, The Pied Piper and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Musical games and hands-on exploration invite kids to develop teamwork skills through composing and experience the instruments of the orchestra. GRADES K–1

Students explore the families of instruments in the orchestra, discovering their history, why they “live” together and how they work together to make a symphony come to life.

SONGWRITING: STATE SONGS “Washington, My Home.” Students explore the history of state songs, learn the Washington State song, and create a song together that represents their class.

FIELD TRIP RESERVATIONS To request a field trip, please visit the Seattle Symphony website and fill out the field trip reservation request form on the School Programs page. Requests are honored on a first-come, first-served basis. Your requested date is not guaranteed until you receive a confirmation and invoice. • Reserve a minimum of 6 weeks in advance of your desired date; reserve earlier if you desire a date in the spring. • Reservations are confirmed by email within one week of your reservation request. If you do not receive a confirmation letter, please call 206.336.6613 or email reservations@ soundbridge.org. • Cancellations and any changes to your reservation must be made at least 5 business days in advance. For appointments cancelled with fewer than 2 business days’ notice, and for missed appointments, the fee is 50% of the scheduled field trip fee. • 1 adult chaperone per 10 children required.

OPEN REHEARSALS Designed exclusively for secondary students, Open Rehearsals invite students to experience the rehearsal process of the Seattle Symphony. Associate Conductor Pablo Rus Broseta will highlight rehearsal techniques and focus on certain sections of the repertoire by discussing themes and dynamics as well as the roles of the different instruments of the orchestra. Students have the opportunity to ask the musicians and conductor questions and have the chance to conduct the orchestra! All rehearsals are in the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium at Benaroya Hall. Open Rehearsal times are 10–11:30am.

YOUNG COMPOSERS WORKSHOP Free for pre-college students This workshop is a 12-week series of two-hour classes with Huck Hodge, Professor of Composition at the University of Washington. Designed for pre-college musicians, the workshop allows students to work on all aspects of composing, including writing themes, learning orchestration and preparing a final score with parts. Classes meet on Wednesdays from 4:30–6:30pm at Benaroya Hall. The program begins in late January 2016, and culminates in early May 2016, with a world premiere chamber concert featuring new works by these young composers. All pieces are performed by Seattle Symphony musicians in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall. Application deadline is December 11, 2015.
