Dear Fellow SCDS Parents and Friends, On behalf of the Parent Council, I am delighted to welcome you to the SCDS Willy Wonka-inspired auction of 2017, A World of Pure Imagination! This evening, we gather to celebrate and support our incredible community of educators, staff members, and students. Our campus is filled with examples of how our children are challenged to grow and stretch the limits of their imagination, and to bring new ideas to life. At tonight’s event, I invite you to show your appreciation and support of this unique educational experience through your generous contributions. Our annual auction is only possible through the tireless efforts of a fleet of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Whether organizing class art projects, pulling together fun parent parties, procuring fantastic items, or dressing in costume at the carpool line—every contribution makes tonight’s event possible. Our talented Auction Chair, Danna Redmond, led her team with great joy, meticulous organization, countless hours of hard work…and always with a smile! Please join me in expressing deep appreciation for Danna and her team for creating this magical evening for us! Building community has been a major theme of the Parent Council this year. Toward this end, I encourage you to reconnect with old friends, make new friends, and bid in celebration of our wonderful SCDS community! With gratitude, Sandra Jerez 2016-2017 Parent Council President

Dear SCDS Families and Friends, Welcome to A World of Pure Imagination! This is the one night where adults come together in community and spirit to celebrate, support, and advance the work of our school. Our intrepid Auction Chair, Danna Redmond, merits special recognition for spearheading an energetic team of volunteers, which makes this evening possible. From planning and procurement to production and clean-up, scores of volunteers have worked to donate their time, talent, and expertise to ensure a successful evening. Thank you, Danna! This year’s Raise-the-Paddle will support financial aid at SCDS. Each year, requests for need-based financial aid grow substantially; as SCDS continues its outreach to serve mission-appropriate students, the need for additional financial aid increases as well. Adequate financial aid resources further allow SCDS to assist families encountering unplanned—and hopefully temporary—setbacks such as a job loss, severe health issues, or other unanticipated circumstances. Over the years, such extra help has been conferred to families on and off financial aid when SCDS has the resources to do so. Tonight’s Raise-the- Paddle will ensure this capacity continues. SCDS parents, alumni, teachers, and grandparents know how crucial an SCDS education can be for the right student. When the SCDS “fit” is right, the educational experience can be transformative. Thank you for your support, and have a fun evening! Sincerely, Michael G. Murphy

Dear fellow SCDS Families, Teachers, and Staff, Welcome to A World of Pure Imagination! This fun-filled and friend-filled night is made possible by the generous support and commitment of time and energy by the entire SCDS community of parents, teachers, and staff. Thank you! A special thank you goes to our teachers and staff for making the school a place of incredible learning, fantastic growth, and loving warmth for our children and for our families. We salute you tonight for bringing A World of Pure Imagination to life for our children on a daily basis. There was an incredible team of parent volunteers leading the charge this year. I am in awe of your dedication, imagination, creativity, and drive to support the school. I appreciated everyone coming together and not only rocking your own lead roles, but helping out in so many other ways. I’d like to thank Christi Decuir who put the “Pro” in procuring; Kari Hatlen for your Pinterest board-like vision and creativity that brought the theme to life in so many ways; Kate Dandel with your wig, communication plans, and swag ideas; and Wendy Froggatt for your time, focus, and attention to the details, thanks for taking on the Admin role with a “sure I can do that” attitude. Thank you to Krista Means for rallying volunteers (then rallying some more); Chris Pratley for your special blend of technical and creative skills to create a fantastic show; and Liz Heron for your calm and dedication and our Bounty lunches to make sure tonight runs like a clock. Thanks to Courtney Witter for your incredible graphic skills and willingness to open the door for a Prime Now delivery; for the imagination and creativity of Erikka Arone, Tsering Short, and the Art Leads to showcase the children’s imagination. Larisa Whipple and Katrina Crawford brought an incredible

vision to the Kindergarten Pillows and such a positive vibe to the project and the leads team. Never a worry with Susan Ward on RSVP and Ann Allen on registration—you ladies rock. Thanks to the catalog editing and design team Susan Hood and Jen Latham. Thanks to Sara Ritter for driving the Celebration Pages and Brian Marsh and Joe Levy who didn’t whine about the Wine Toss. Tara Binge, Deanna Harding, Kate MacDonald, Colleen Doten, Kauser Dar, Elta Ratliff, Kate Gebler, and so many others who came together in so many ways. This is truly a community effort with an incredible group of volunteers—thank you. A heartfelt thank you to Andrea Sanders, Erin Perry, and Sheena McFerran in our Advancement Office. You are like a trio of Oompa Loompas keeping the auction factory running and everything on track and in perspective. You are truly the best! Thank you to the fantastic Sandra Jerez and the incredible Parent Council for rallying your classes, building enthusiasm, and building community amongst the parents. Finally, a special thank you to my dear family, Brian and Cole. When I said I was considering the Auction Lead role—your response of “Great, go for it” made all the difference. Thanks for the love and support and watching both versions of “Charlie and Chocolate Factory” with me. I love you dearly and couldn’t have done it without your support. We are here tonight to have some fun, celebrate our SCDS community, teachers, and staff, and to support the school. So raise your bid cards high and enjoy A World of Pure Imagination! Warm Regards, Danna Redmond 2017 Auction Chair

raise the paddle for... An SCDS education provides a foundation that supports students throughout their lives across the academic, athletic, social-emotional, and problem-solving planes. For the right student, an SCDS education is transformative. Now imagine being the parent of an exceptionally bright child, but being unable to meet his or her needs because the school that is the right fit is out of financial reach. One of SCDS’s primary objectives has always been to welcome as many mission-appropriate students as possible. However, tuition—coupled with the demand for financial aid—continues to gradually rise making access to an SCDS education out of reach for some families without some form of financial assistance. At present, approximately 13% of current families receive needbased aid. In conjunction with SCDS’s ongoing growth and outreach efforts, we aim to ensure the school is in a position to continue to support access as needs arise. With your commitment this evening, we can not only ensure needbased assistance is available for those who need it, but provide coverage for co-curricular programs such as Winterim and class trips automatically for those also qualifying for tuition assistance. Your contribution confirms SCDS’ commitment to expand and diversify opportunities for our community while ensuring all families can continue to experience an SCDS education. Dig deep and raise your paddles high for ACCESS! $10,000 —$5,000 —$2,500 —$1,000—$500 —$250 —$100 —$50

centerpieces The highest bidders tonight will be able to take home one of our table centerpieces! Inspired by Wonka’s “Great Glass Elevator,” each unique centerpiece is a glass apothecary jar that contains a live mini Phalaenopsis orchid and a string of twinkly fairy lights. The apothecary jars look beautiful when transformed into candy jars as well!

class art projects Our wonderful art projects are works of imagination, creativity, and inspiration that showcase our SCDS students’ sense of wonder and awe. Whether depicting bubbles of butterflies, jars of dreams, imaginary candy bars, or students’ vision of infinity, the art pieces reflect the imagination of our children and parent volunteers. The pieces came alive in a variety of mediums from fabric, to ink on tile, to string on wood. Each piece is a unique creation envisioned by the fabulous Grade Art Leads and brought to life by SCDS students. You and your child(ren) will be proud to display these masterpieces in your home.

dessert dash Hoping to indulge in one of Wonka’s many delightful desserts? You will find a Dessert Dash bid slip at your table; don’t forget to record your bid number and the dollar amount you would like to bid toward dessert for your table. One of Wonka’s helpers will collect and tally each table’s Dessert Dash envelopes. The table with the highest cumulative bid will choose their decadent dessert first. Bid high to ensure you get first choice!

3 7th grade class art: "imaginative symmetry" Certain universal patterns are found throughout the natural world, from the angles of atoms to the dispersal of planets in an ecosystem. The 7th grade art project celebrates the creativity of nature, expressed in recurring geometric forms. With a nod to the architecture of bees, soap foam, and snowflakes, students used identical laser-cut wooden hexagons and string to create a pattern of their imagining. These were then combined in a seemingly free-form, yet ordered pattern on a black background: once again mimicking the patterned art of nature. Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: SCDS 7th Grade Class

7 5th grade class art: "49 children dancing with keith" This beautiful art piece is 16 quilted and appliquĂŠd panels of Keith Haring-inspired fabric art. Fifth grade students chose their unique figure positions and glyphs in small groups, designing their own vignette of Keith Haring-inspired compositions. They carefully cut their paper patterns, then fabric, which was later quilted with scene-accenting embroidery flourishes. Each student helped to tell a story with their vignette. Can you read their stories? Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: SCDS 5th Grade Class

8 2nd grade class art: "feelings in motion" With a brief introduction to play therapy, the 2nd grade class creatively expressed feelings of joy, fear, wonder, and amazement using ceramic glazes, an assortment of brush styles, and small and medium tile sizes. First, the children were invited to explore and select two feelings—one positive, one negative. Then using the color palates available, each child painted their unique impressions of what those feelings look like onto two separate tiles. The outcome is beautiful and ranges from broad strokes of intense color across the tiles (angry, sad, surprised) to detailed faces demonstrating the nuances of fear, love, and happiness. The tiles have been thoughtfully organized and mounted in a rectangular shape which can be displayed in a home or office setting. This collaborative art project captures each child’s feelings and artistic expressions. Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: SCDS 2nd Grade Class

12 1st grade class art: "shops of their own" Willy Wonka’s creation was his chocolate factory. With that theme in mind, we asked the 1st graders to tap into their own wonderful imagination and choose the one thing they’d most like to offer the world in a shop of their own. During our time together, each child thought deeply about that one most special thing he or she would offer, then meticulously crafted their shop’s sign. Each child’s personally-designed sign was then magically shrunken and hung above their shop door on the whimsical hand-drawn (graphite on paper) forest scape. Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: SCDS 1st Grade Class

15 kindergarten class art: "kindergarten dreams" “Kindergarten Dreams” is inspired by Roald Dahl’s book, The BFG. The thirty Seattle Country Day School K indergarteners made depictions of their “golden phizzwizard”—their most happy, silly, and fantastic dream. These dreams appear to have been captured and tenderly placed into mason jars, as was the practice of Dahl’s dream-catching Big Friendly Giant. These brilliantly-colored jars are set against the background of a starry sky, ready to be released into the night. The hopes and dreams of these kindergarteners will remain carefully preserved in this artwork, as the children who imagined them grow up and pursue their dreams. 17 3rd grade class art: "candy bar dreams" Third graders envisioned the candy treat of their dreams, then sketched out the one-of-a-kind wrapper design. They chose their own concoction, name, and logo, and saturated their heavy-pressed watercolor paper with vivid marker colors. Some chose their favorite type of confectionery, others chose special sweets for their friends or loved ones. Affixed to varying pops of color blocks, from a custom-mixed palette in acrylic paint on canvas, the geometric repeat highlights a Pop Art feature of using product labels, and thus elevating the mundane. The children’s work combines the typical subject of found objects in pop art with whimsical creativity through their uniquely playful designs. Thought-provoking and deeply insightful, but also really cute, because they’re 3rd graders. Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: SCDS 3rd Grade Class

20 6th grade class art: "imagination, explored" Sixth graders tinkered with gravity, breath, and eye-droppers to design playful and often dramatic abstracts on square ceramic tiles. Using intensely-pigmented alcohol inks, many chose to layer several ink colors, tilting and dripping to achieve the desired composition. Some used droppers or blew in small straws to coax their ink to spread into a new direction. Sixth graders experimented with the medium and enjoyed the freedom to design and redesign with this playful take on exploring the imagination. We are what we can imagine and the tiles are every little piece of it. Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: SCDS 6th Grade Class

At least two adult chaperones will be present. Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: Quinn Thomsen

22 raise the paddle for financial aid An SCDS education provides a foundation that supports students throughout their lives across the academic, athletic, social-emotional, and problem-solving planes. For the right student, an SCDS education is transformative. Now imagine being the parent of an exceptionally bright child, but being unable to meet his or her needs because the school that is the right fit is out of financial reach. With your commitment this evening we can bolster needbased assistance and ensure coverage for co-curricular programs such as Winterim and class trips is automatically provided for those qualifying for tuition assistance. Your contribution confirms SCDS’ commitment to expand and diversify opportunities for our community while ensuring all families can continue to experience an SCDS education. We encourage you to dig deep and raise your paddles high for ACCESS!

25 4th grade class art: "fizzy lifting dreams" This piece was inspired by the imaginative flight of Charlie and Grandpa Joe as they took to the air, surrounded by bubbles, after stealing sips of Willy Wonka’s “Fizzy Lifting Drink.” Our children used their imaginations to create a butterfly of their own design, and dream of where the butterflies might be headed as they opened their wings and took flight for the first time. A butterfly is a transformative symbol. The piece reflects our children growing older and finding their place in the world. Each butterfly is unique and the dreams are creative. The overall collection is bright and will certainly lift your spirits. Each child created a butterfly on paper. The butterfly was encased in its own acrylic bubble and affixed to a painted wood panel. The accompanying book features a picture of each child, their butterfly drawings, and their written dreams for their butterfly. Value: Beyond Imagination Thank You: SCDS 4th Grade Class

Students criss-crossed our campus in search of places and people that evoked special thoughts from their many years at SCDS. Some photos embody special emotions, and some represent significant spaces in your student’s growth and childhood. The commitment to expression, creativity, authentic voice, and life-long learning is represented by the infinity symbol arrangement of the photos. May they continue to imagine, create, and explore!
