2016 AUCTION SEATTLE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL SATURDAY, MARCH 19, 2016 THE EVENING BEGINS AT 5:00 P.M. FREMONT STUDIOS 155 NORTH 35TH STREET SEATTLE Please help us conserve paper and costs by bringing your catalog with you!

Dear Friends, On behalf of the SCDS Parent Council, it is an honor to welcome you to our Dr. Seuss-inspired 2016 auction. Tonight we gather as a community to celebrate and support our wonderful school, faculty, staff, and children. Each day, our exceptional teachers ignite passions and inspire our children to stretch and grow beyond their imaginations. At tonight’s event, we invite you to show your appreciation and support through your generous contributions. And, equally important, “There is fun to be done!” This event is possible only thanks to the generosity and dedication of an army of donors and volunteers. Whether painting murals with the kids, procuring unique items for bidding, donating fabulous vacation homes, organizing parent parties, transporting artwork around town, stuffing envelopes or more . . . each person’s contribution makes a difference. Thank you. Because of these dedicated individuals, tonight you have Places to Go and Mountains to Climb—“You can steer yourself any direction you choose!” To our Auction Chair, Deanna Harding . . . “You’re off to great places! Tonight is your night!” You led your team with spirit and humor to bring to life your vision of an inclusive, whimsical, and fun event. Thank you for your energy, leadership, and countless hours of work. Tonight we encourage you to dig deep and raise your paddles high in support of SCDS. Stretch yourself. Make some new friends, and connect with some old. This is your party, your night, your community, and your chance to enjoy and celebrate the magic of SCDS. “Things may happen and often do to people as brainy and footsy as you!” With gratitude and admiration, Susan Ward 2015-16 Parent Council President

Dear SCDS Families, Patrons, and Friends, We are pleased as punch to welcome everyone to the 2016 Seattle Country Day School auction, Oh! The Places You’ll Go! Tonight is SCDS’s big night to come together as a community to celebrate and support the school’s students, programs, staff, and extraordinary learning culture. Your presence and participation this evening sends a message of faith and confidence in SCDS and its mission. To produce such a large and delightful evening requires a neararmy of volunteers. Our fun-loving and tireless Auction Chair, Deanna Harding, deserves special recognition for her leadership, spirit, and enthusiasm in building her team. The result is a fun and meaningful event. Thank you, Deanna, and volunteers! Net proceeds from the auction support many parts of the school and its operations, most significantly need-based financial aid. This year’s Raise-the-Paddle will help SCDS buy a new school bus. After 15 years of service, it is time to retire the old bus to ensure continued safe and dependable school transportation for our students. This is especially true as the demands on the bus continue to increase. Whether used for daily transportation of students to school, after-school sports, off-campus middle school physical education, community service, or field trips, the bus is a true school asset. Let’s buy the bus (and “Oh, the places we’ll go”)! Your support tonight helps make SCDS the extraordinary place it is in the hearts and minds of our students. I encourage everyone to have fun and bid robustly! Thank you, Michael G. Murphy Head of School

Fellow SCDS Parents, Teachers, and Staff, What an incredible journey this year has been leading the charge of SCDS’s auction, Oh! The Places You’ll Go! This journey started with recruiting our amazing parent volunteers and continued building momentum as we identified our charismatic auctioneer Larry Flynn last summer. In the fall, we enjoyed countless (Top Pot-infused) planning meetings, class potlucks, and procurement expeditions all around Seattle. However, what has stood out to me the most is your unbelievable dedication, generosity, inspiring talent, and gift of time towards putting this incredible evening together. A heartfelt THANK YOU goes to each one of you! Tonight would not be successful without your efforts and love for our school community. Seattle Country Day School is a special community that nurtures, develops, and encourages our children to be thoughtful, inquisitive, and independent young people. Most importantly, thank you teachers and staff, we are all appreciative of what you do on a daily basis for our families. At the nexus of the parent community is Andrea, our Director of Advancement. Andrea, thank you for your ongoing support this year. I’d like to thank Jackie my procurer in crime, Peri for sailing through the “no” storm, and Carey for all of your decoration support and for making me laugh. Thanks Brad, for your patience through the countless iterations that resulted in such beautiful graphics. Thanks to Tara, for handling the sugar rush like a pro. There was never a worry with Jen Y. at the helm of RSVPs and so much more. I am thankful for the art prowess of Bina, Tsering, and the class art captains. Then there is Sandra, who agreed to lead the Kindergarten Pillow team even though she doesn’t sew! With amazing Liz Heron, anything is possible. Chasing kids with a camera and bag of candy will be a memory of a lifetime. Thanks to Susan Hood—always positive and perceptive. Thanks Michele W., for the props, slides, and your contagious drive to procure. Our IBM Watson-like team of Jen Latham, Jen Felten, Lisa Carroll, Cristal, Rupa, Catherine, Teal, Jeremiah, Amanda, and Christina pulled the levers and turned

the cranks of this auction machine. All of these efforts are being served up tonight with brilliance and grace. Thank you to all of you, as well as the many others I may have missed, or omitted, to protect the innocent. A very special thank you to Kari who besides being my college roommate only a “few years ago,” was my Seuss SWAG Star, Auction Invite Diva, and Friday Flyer Maven. And, wasn’t it nice of us all to come to her birthday party tonight? Happiest Birthday dear friend! And, most importantly, thank you to my sweet family, who will get me back March 20th, Ken, Zach, and Abby, I love and cherish you all. We are here tonight because we value education, appreciate all that SCDS offers our children, and deeply care about this special community. Let’s make the Oh! The Places You’ll Go! auction one for the memory books. Bid high. Bid often. With gratitude, Deanna Harding 2016 Auction Chair

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” -Dr. Seuss

“I was so excited as a kindergartner to go places on the bus... some of my favorite memories over the years are riding the bus for community service and being with my soccer teammates on the bus. -SCDS Student

Raise-the-Paddle:

BUY THE BUS! “We won’t lag behind, because we’ll have speed. We’ll pass the whole gang and soon take the lead. Wherever we drive, we’ll be best of the best. Wherever we go, we’ll top all the rest!” – -Dr. Seuss

For over 15 years, SCDS’s bus has transported students from 7:30 a.m. to well beyond the ‘last bell,’ day in and day out. It has taken eighth graders and their buddies to the pumpkin patch, middle schoolers to off-site PE, students across divisions on field trips, and teachers to retreats. The bus has faithfully transported students to track meets, soccer fields, Ultimate tournaments, and basketball games. Not to mention, the bus supports healthy transportation habits by bringing 18 children to campus each and every day! However, over time, the bus has become a bit tired. As the demands on the bus increase, it is time for it to retire to ensure the dependable transportation of our students. A new bus will bring a PA system, working radio, and more seats, ready to transport students to community service, summer camps, field trips, and track meets. The engine, transmission, and starter will be up to snuff, with nary a worry about sagging upholstery, the leaky seat, or safety and stuff. So let’s raise our paddles this eve and raise them high, because together there is something we need to buy. A new bus for students grades K-8, a new bus with all the bells and whistles would be GREAT! With your support, students are off to great places, they’re off and away to experience and explore OFF-SITE in an inquiry-kindof-way!

Larry Flynn Auctioneer Our auctioneer tonight was born in Yakima and raised in Wenatchee. Life, however, has taken him around the world! The former radio broadcaster’s professional microphone experience began in 1977 when he was billed as the youngest Professional Ringmaster in the world with the Ashton Circus of Australia. Larry has been the emcee or auctioneer for nearly one thousand charity events all over America. From auctions in elementary school gyms to the Waldorf Astoria in NYC, Larry has been involved with every level of fundraising event and has helped organizations raise millions of dollars for their charitable causes. Larry worked fundraising events for years for actor and activist Christopher Reeve supporting spinal cord research. He has also been involved locally in Seattle as the auctioneer for St. Thomas School, West Sound Academy, Hutch Holiday Gala, Breath of Life Gala-Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Woodland Park Zoo, Susan G. Komen, Seattle Celebrity Waiters, Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, Evergreen Hospital, and various other NWAIS Schools in the Northwest. Larry loves what he does, and he loves helping schools raise money for the benefit of your children. He is proud to be a part of the fundraising efforts for Seattle Country Day School tonight!

Dessert Dash You will find a Dessert Dash bid slip at your table. Record your bid number and the dollar amount you would like to bid toward dessert for your table and place the slip in the designated envelope. Envelopes will be collected and tallied before the Live Auction begins. The table with the highest cumulative bid will choose dessert first. Then the next highest-bidding table will be called, and so forth. Bid high to ensure you get first choice!

glassybaby Sign up at your table to take home a beautiful glassybaby for $60 tonight. Colors available are red, yellow, aqua blue, caramel, and orange. Got a birthday coming up for someone? Hostess or housewarming gift? Knock it off the list and benefit SCDS, too.

Kid Photographs Your child's photo was captured on campus showcasing a ‘day in the life’ at SCDS. Take home this beautiful memory of your child in a black and white 4x6 picture with a tasteful glass double-sided frame. Frame includes an inspirational Dr. Seuss quote on the back. A different quote was individually chosen for each grade represented. Please take your child’s photo tonight and thank you for coming to the auction. Enjoy! This is SCDS’s gift to you!

Restaurant Frenzy A variety of gift certificates from some of the finest local restaurants in Seattle will be auctioned off tonight. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a purchase at list price with no haggling. But, they do not call it a frenzy for nothing. Here’s the catch—you’ll need to be quick on the draw to nab your next date night dinner. Get those arms ready!

Centerpieces The highest bidder at each table wins a whimsical and Seussinspired centerpiece. Centerpieces include beautiful manzanita branches delicately holding six succulent air plants in a matte white or black square vase. Just like our children grow and thrive, the air plants do the same. And, get this . . . the highest bidding table wins a round of drinks delivered to your table, or you can be super popular and surprise a teacher’s table. Compete with other tables tonight and BID HIGH!

Class Art Projects In keeping with this year’s theme—Oh! The Places You’ll Go!— our Seussically-whimsical art projects delight and amaze, in a celebration of all the imaginative creatures that make up the SCDS family, and their aspirations for adventure. Whether inspired by fantastic bubble machines or the dreams of future travels, all the pieces reflect the curiosity and wonder that results from the freedom to be one’s authentic self. Students dreamt of the snowy mountains they would scale, reached for the stars in watercolor washes, expressed their individuality and inter-connectedness in colorful plumage and vibrant stain on woodgrain, embraced rollicking Seussical avatars to stimulate exploration, and soared to new heights artistically and metaphorically. These masterpieces capture the hopes and dreams within a moment in each child’s unique journey. So treasure the moment, buckle up—and oh! the places they’ll go!

Kindergarten Pillows Each of these whimsical 16-inch round, merino wool felt pillows features your kindergartener’s silhouette against a shade of their favorite color. Bordered by their second favorite color, these pillows are sure to become a treasured keepsake from their first year at SCDS. Pillows are available for $125 each.

Golden Ticket Drawing Golden tickets will be available for $100 each at registration and throughout the evening until 7:00 p.m. The winner may select any item listed in the Live Auction portion of this catalog for just the cost of the ticket! Exclusions include class art projects, teacher experiences, All-Star Baseball Experience, and the Spain Villa Getaway. Buy early, limited tickets are available—this is an incredible chance to win big!

Photo Booth Inside a Bus Hop into the super cool, retro VW van awaiting your arrival inside Fremont Studios. The Shutter Bus Company will take your snazzy photo. Need props? Not to worry, they are all in the bus. Just as we are bidding high tonight to purchase a new SCDS school bus, The Shutter Bus Co. will be treating us right with high-quality photos that will be immediately available to take home tonight. No charge, just pure fun! Hop in, and I dare you not to smile or have fun with these props.

7 Kindergarten Class Art: My Mountain is Calling “You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So... get on your way! What a fabulous attitude to have beginning so early in life! The kindergarten piece is an ode to the amazing adventures awaiting the children at every stage in their lives. It is a fabric-on-canvas representation of the places they individually and collectively could, or perhaps should, go one day. We asked each child to draw the one place they have not yet visited that they most would like to visit in the future. Their ideas were unique and varied and included more traditionally-exciting places such as Disneyland, Epcot Center, and Legoland as well as amazing geographic places such as Portland, Mt. Rainier, Hawaii, Australia, Japan, India, Egypt, and Antarctica to slightly more abstract places like underwater, the moon, a volcano, a hot air balloon, a castle, and outer space. As you can see by the broad range of places represented, the sky is the limit (or, maybe not) to where their vivid imaginations can take them. Each drawing was scanned, shrunk and converted to black and white. The child's name and the place they'd drawn were added, and the images were then carefully transferred onto a white cotton fabric prepared with an adhesive backing. The images became the snow cap atop each child's individual mountain, the fabric for which was selected by each child. Value: Priceless Thank You: SCDS Kindergarten Class

8 1st Grade Class Art: Ready for Take-off "Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try." Dr. Seuss The enchanting words of Dr. Seuss inspired the first grade class to create this beautiful art work from crayon and watercolor paints. Each child was tasked with imagining the places they could go, with an eye towards the sky and space. And with pencil, they sketched a vision of places beyond the imagination with white, yellow, green, brown and black crayons, the children decorated scenes of space, stars, planets and creatures from out of this world hues of blue and purple watercolor were then painted over, creating a batiklike resistance and finally, the visions of celestial adventures were folded into airplanes, mounted and framed in a shadow box. The creative minds of the first grade class bravely dreamed of the places they will go—may our support embolden them to pursue any path they choose! Value: Priceless Thank You: SCDS 1st Grade Class

9 2nd Grade Class Art: Strut "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?" Inspired by the Seussian quote that embraces every child's unique flair (quirks and all!), our 2nd grade peacock is flush with individually painted “feathers” of shaped wood ovoids. Every second grader grasped acrylic paint pens and went to town: their creativity and immediate resonance with the quote opened up the floodgates to intricate patterns, colorful contrasts, and vivid individuality. Each child painted at least one large “eye” (or two smaller ones) and some had time for an extra, which resulted in a striking display of plumage for our playful bird. A cradled birch plywood painting panel (made in Canada) holds several layers of sanded gesso, as well as the hand-painted acrylic body of the peacock. Each feather “train” was lovingly placed and affixed for balance in color and pattern. Value: Priceless Thank You: SCDS 2nd Grade Class

10 3rd Grade Class Art: Branching Out "And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 他 percent guaranteed) Kid, you'll move mountains." On hearing this quote, third graders prepared many pieces of natural wood slats by applying a soft, beautiful stain. Have you ever wondered which places our children envision they will go? Do you remember where you wished to go to when you were a child? This wood art piece is a representation of how colorful, varied, yet similar this yearning to explore is in all of us. The 3rd grade students were encouraged to imagine where they would like to visit, live, or work someday. While envisioning their futures, they learned about how parent volunteers milled the pine and how their ideas would be transcribed onto each pine slat. Finally, they were given unfinished pine slats and asked to stain them in various natural and vibrant colors. Each child's piece yielded unique colors and textures that reflected his or her connection with the wood and materials. The children's aspirations were lightly lacquered to protect and preserve their color, then carefully embossed with golden letters, yielding a piece that is a stunning reflection of how varied and endearing our dreams can be. Value: Priceless Thank You: SCDS 3rd Grade Class

Each block is coated with UV-resistant spray. Value: Priceless Thank You: SCDS 4th Grade Class

16 5th Grade Class Art: Class Menagerie Each fifth grader was asked to create a Seuss-like character that in some way represented some characteristic of themselves or who they would like to be. They were given samples of the types of hands, feet, eyes, nose, and body shapes that Dr. Seuss used in his illustrations as inspiration. They initially sketched in pencil, then drew their final line art with sharpies. After they were satisfied with their line drawings, the line art was photocopied and colored using bright markers. The figures created by the fifth-graders were then placed on a black and white background painted on wood panels by SCDS mom, Megan Frazer, giving the overall piece a whimsical sense of motion. 21 6th Grade Class Art: Dream Machine “...reality is finally better than your dreams!” Oh! The places they went in the 6th grade Dream Machine. The Eiffel Tower, Mount Fuji, the moon, and everywhere in between. When they whispered their aspirations into the whimsical pipes— what might you be, what will you invent, where will you go—out popped the bubbles of their dreams, floating in the stars. The detailed and colorful dreams of each student were crafted of pen and ink, then placed on a foam core to float together in the soft blue sky. The dream machine and other elements were envisioned by Sandra Fischer, Jane Mills, and Amy Healy. The professionallyframed piece sits on canvas painted with acrylic color reflecting the breezy feel of childhood on a summer’s day, where so many dreams are born. 22 7th Grade Class Art: Up, Up & Away “You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights!” Up, up and away! 7th grade SCDS students are soaring off to adventures in magical faraway places in their very own hot air balloons. Inspired by zentangle patterns and their imaginations, students drew intricate designs on pre-cut circles of varying sizes. Inside each circle they inscribed a place they would like to visit in the near future. The circles were then painted a Seussian color of the students' choice—blue, yellow, orange or green. For the final composition, the circles were arranged in an eye-catching pattern on an illustration-style Seattle skyline backdrop expertly drawn by local artist Sid Arthur. Finally, this beautiful and inspiring work of art was placed in a high quality wooden frame and is waiting to adorn your home! Value: Priceless Thank You: SCDS 7th Grade Class

23 8th Grade Class Art: Oh! To England We'll Go. “And if you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it.” The 8th grade worked as a team, each one lending a hand, to craft emblems of dreams of a foreign land. Painted with ink, each tile gained great detail. A beautiful image that shined without fail. Each student worked fast to finish the session creating a black and grey metal impression. Travel shapes us forever. It leaves indelible marks of beauty and transformation. It creates new facets of experience and takes nothing away. The 8th grade collaborative project celebrates “the places you’ll go” by creating a piece that represents their upcoming spring trip to England. Students used the ancient technique of metal embossing to create stylistic impressions of English icons. The embossing utilizes the malleability of metal to form new shapes in relief; revealing each stroke and furrow of the maker; creating new facets while removing nothing. The texture is highlighted with the addition of India ink. Value: Priceless Thank You: SCDS 8th Grade Class

25 Raise-the-Paddle: Buy the Bus For over 15 years, SCDS’s bus has transported students from 7:30 a.m. to well beyond the last bell, day in and day out. The engine, transmission, and starter will be up to snuff, and nary a worry about sagging upholstery, a leaky seat, and safety and stuff. So let’s raise our paddles this eve and raise them high, because together there is something we need to buy. A new bus for students grades K-8, a new bus with all the bells and whistles would be GREAT! With your support students are off to great places, they’re off and away to experience and explore OFF-SITE in an inquiry-kind-of-way!
