PUBLISHER'S NOTE

T

he winter season is one of tradition and memories, which we carry with us all year. During this time, we also wait in anticipation of something new. Transforming a tradition that has been enjoyed by others into something that is fresh and your own, is what helps make these memories vibrant. In our winter issue, we highlight the debutantes presented in the Fleur de Lis and Veiled Prophet Balls. These events have a long tradition and as our pictures reflect, each young woman brings her own personal style and energy. In this issue, we also feature a home that was customized for its original owner and has undergone an extensive transformation to reflect the new owner’s taste and style. We hope you will draw inspiration for your own home from the new textiles we are featuring by top design firms. Our travel writer, Judy Crowell, travels down the Danube on a vessel recently distinguished by Travel + Leisure as one of the “World’s Best Top 10 Small Cruise Lines. Finally, we feature the trends to expect this Spring in our fashion, jewelry and beauty sections and provide you with our favorites. Enjoy our Winter Issue and join us in anticipating future Seasons. JUSTIN S. NANGLE Publisher

OPERA THEATRE OF SAINT LOUIS PRESENTS THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis held its annual holiday celebration on Sunday, December 6, 2009. This festive occasion provided a wonderful way to start the holiday season. Chaired by Mr. and Mrs. William H.T. Bush, the event combined the charming ambience of Saint Louis Country Club with a culinary feast and seasonal entertainment. Christopher Feigum, baritone, headlined the ensemble of singers. The critics acclaimed him as Figaro in Opera Theatre's 2009 production of The Ghosts of Versailles. He reprised the role at Ireland's Wexford Festival Opera in October. He will return to the Opera Theatre in 2010 to sing the title role in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.

ll winter long, we've been donning leather jackets, studded pieces, and black, black, black! While we've enjoyed these tough girl looks, they pale in comparison to the soft hues that made their debut at Mercede's Benz Fashion Week. A breath of fresh air and a proclamation of warm spring days to come, these pastels lift our spirits and our fashion sense.

erhaps it is no surprise that the most prominent color on the runways at the Spring 2010 shows was the very shade named "Color of the Year" by Pantone Inc., the world-renowned authority on color; but for whatever reason turquoise was everywhere you looked. The striking marine hues appeared on numerous runways highlighting important trends, from long maxi dresses, to short shorts and bold prints. Definitely an “it” color we’d say.

n 1980 Paloma Picasso debuted her first collection of jewels for Tiffany & Co.; asserting herself as a major player in the world of haute joaillerie. Fearless in her use of scale, color and stone, Picasso is an innovator with an uncanny ability to explore new designs while remaining true to her definitive style. Every collection highlights the designer’s affinity for geometric shapes and graphically alluring forms as seen with her use of, “Scribbles”, “Graffiti” and her most 20

famous “X”. Thirty years later, the designer is still at it, introducing three new collections for Tiffany. The collections reprise many memorable themes of her past collections, like the “paper chains” which have been reinterpreted and appear new again in light, airy hammered gold and silver link chains. Picasso’s newest collections beautifully celebrate the defining characteristics of the designer’s jewelry; embracing shape, bold color and always making a statement. www.tiffany.com

ince its launch in 2000, Milly has become a go-to brand for women looking to fill their closets with staple pieces that are made in fun patterns, bold colors, and a feminine touch that sets them apart from other basics. This spring, Michelle Smith, the designer behind the label is launching a Jewelry Collection. Smith's jewelry are much like the clothes that have been flying off shelves and into our dressers; the pieces are classic in construct, but the use of unexpected color and stone make the pieces unique and completely on trend.

ith over 2000 loyal subjects watching on, the King of Love and Beauty crowned his newest Queen, Melissa Brenton Howe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Howe IV, on December 22 at the Veiled Prophets 125th ball held at the Hyatt Riverfront Hotel. The ceremony began with animated drills from the boldly dressed Bengel Lancers and a special performance of the National Anthem by Neal E. Boyd, 2008 winner of America’s Got Talent. The night of celebration continued as former Queens of Love and Beauty, including retiring Queen Elizabeth Bunn Hailand made their way down the aisle accompanied by the melodies of the VP Orchestra conducted by Steve Shankman. Making their first debut were 42 Maids of Honor, and six Special Maids; Elizabeth Field Davidson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Davidson; Josephine Dorothy Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Jones; Kelly Shea Rouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Rouse; Alexa Stolz LaBarge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Craig LaBarge; Amanda Marilyn Reagan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis M. Reagan; and Eloise Huttig Schlafly, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edward F. Schlafly, Jr. Following a traditional ceremony, the guests partook in a lively celebration in honor of the newly crowned Queen; dancing into the early morning to the energetic renditions of party favorites by the Pat Patrick’s Band and Orchestra who flew in from Nashville for the event. Thus another year of the Veiled Prophet tradition commenced in great style and festivity that celebrates the works of the organization, its members and their legacy. 22

Fleur de Lis

T

he 51st annual Fleur de Lis Ball was held December 29, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel. It was a magical evening where thirty four honorees were presented by their fathers to Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, their mothers and guests. This year's Ball chairwoman, Cary Renz and the current president, Beth Van Horn, greeted the parents and past presidents at a welcoming champagne reception. Dressed all in glittery white ball gowns and carrying lush bouquets of calla lilies and orchids, the presentation ceremony began promptly at eight and was followed by a formal dinner and lively dancing. The organization, founded in 1958, has traditionally donated the proceeds from the Ball and other events to Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. Through this past year the total donation from the Fleur de Lis have exceeded $2.6 million which is usually dedicated to pediatric research. The Board is currently hard at work on the 2010 Ball.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS

W

eddings are frequently described by brides as being fairy tales, but in the case of Anne McCandless Gardner Imbs’, daughter of Anne and Joseph Imbs III, wedding to Teru Scott Olsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Olsen, the celebration was more of a musical. Living in Seattle since 2008, the bride, called Cadi by friends, knew that many guests would have to travel from different parts of the country to attend her Saint Louis wedding, which she described as being a no brainer saying, “Saint Louis is my home and where my family lives. Even as a little girl, I would talk of having my wedding in Saint Louis.” With the locale in mind, the couple sent out their save-the-date cards with the iconic musical title “Meet Me in St. Louis” engraved across the top, and thus a theme was born. The longtime couple, who met at Santa Clara University in 2002, was engaged in August 2009 while vacationing with the bride’s family at their cottage in Michigan. Following the couple’s romantic engagement, the wedding planning began. The bride describes how she decided upon her fall wedding saying, “St. Louis has beautiful falls. I love the brilliant, colorful leaves, crisp, cool 34

air and comfortable weather.” The season also coincided with the bride’s affinity for rich, warm shades which were prevalent throughout the celebration. Her nine bridesmaids wore floor length dresses by Bill Levkoff in deep shades of cinnamon and terra cotta which the bride recalls as being “stunning”. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds headed to Saint Louis Country Club for their reception which would be colorful in every sense of the word. Surrounded by friends, family and the colors of fall achieved by Jack and Iren Holmes of Petals, who the bride says, “did a terrific job of selecting the perfect flowers to compliment the season,” the newlyweds were soon met with a very befitting surprise from the father of the Bride. Singing Broadway songs rewritten and personalized for the twosome, the couple was serenaded by a small cast of professional singers from the Muny. The bride remembers how following the musical rendition, “there was not a dry eye in the room. It was such a special, unforgettable gesture my dad arranged for me, and best of all kept it a secret to the very end.” Musical from start to finish, the couple’s wedding celebrated their union with home in mind.

A FANTASTIC FALL WEDDING

S

t. Louis natives Valerie Mills and Ron Hind dated their senior year at John Burroughs and Country Day schools, respectively. Then they went their separate ways. Life’s journey took him to New York City and her to Los Angeles, where she worked for Fred Segal. So their elegant wedding October 17, 2009, at Ladue Chapel followed by a reception at Old Warson Country Club was not predetermined but rather the happy result of a fateful meeting and reconnection three years ago. She moved back to St. Louis and opened her upscale retail shop, Valerie Mills Fine Apparel in Clayton. He followed, able to conduct business in the finance field wherever he happens to be. It was the perfect wedding weekend except for the fact that an unseasonably cold October had guests bundled up in their coats and blankets, provided by the groom, for the rehearsal dinner outside at Forest Park’s World’s Fair Pavilion. “Ron researched the weather over 10 years for October, and it was always warmer. It was a lot of fun but it was freezing,” Valerie said. Bridesmaids wore individually chosen black dresses, which were set off by exquisitely colored flower bouquets by Dale Rohman. The bride’s sophisticated strapless gown 36

of silk organza from Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills, was adorned with Swarovski crystals and embroidered lace. Wedding coordinator Betty Freeman of Planned Parties, Inc., praised the couple for their easy-going manner. “It was such a pleasure from start to finish. They are two wonderful people, so much in love. They knew what they wanted and it was just right.” The white-themed reception at Old Warson was enhanced with floral arrangements woven into the chandeliers. Cameras at every guest’s place ensured that candid moments throughout the evening would be captured, providing entertainment for guests, especially the bride’s nieces and nephews. The groom’s cake, a replica of the New York City skyline in homage to his former city life, was chocolate on chocolate, complementing the fabulous tiered wedding cake by Encore Baking Company. The bride says she had never pictured herself having a big, formal wedding, but Ron wanted a celebration all his friends could attend. In the end, she changed her mind and wouldn’t change a thing. After a wedding trip to Cabo San Lucas, the couple settled into married life, back where it all began.

PURSE, KEYS, PICTURES, MOM! WHAT BRIDES NEED TO TAKE ALONG WHEN VISITING VENDORS by Diana Losciale

T

he specialty shops, boutiques, bakeries, florists and flagship wedding departments are well-equipped with everything you need when “shopping” for your wedding. Still, you need to take more than your purse when meeting with your wedding vendors. GOING FOR YOUR GOWN? Bring shoes, and any fun shoes will do except tennis shoes, advised Judy Litty at Enchanted Bride. No need to have your hair weddingday styled. Ponytails are fine, neat and simple. “Once you purchase the gown, you can take the veil to the stylist for suggestions on how to wear your hair.” Makeup is not necessary, nor is jewelry. Also bring or wear a strapless bra. Have your Spanx with you if you want to be all “tucked in.” The most important person when you’re first trying on gowns is likely Mom. However, Litty has 44

S E A S O N S

|

seen a half dozen accompanying friends in total agreement when the bride tries on that certain gown and they all burst into (happy) tears. FLYING OUT THE DOOR TO THE FLORIST? It’s helpful if the bride has a creative vision, one she can sum up conceptually, like “romantic,’ “mysterious,” “magical,” or “woodsy,” said Jane Winter at Wildflowers. Be ready with color ideas. Maybe you have your gown but sometimes the flowers are so important, you are choosing them first. Have three colors in mind, as a starting point. Take along photos of flowers and arrangements that you like and do not like, and be able to verbalize why. If possible, have the homework done on your venues (church, reception) so you know the spaces although your florist will likely be familiar with most. By all

means, bring a friend, whether for confidence or as a fount of ideas. SET FOR SELECTING STATIONERY? A little pre-work such as perusing the Internet, is always helpful to have a feel for favorite looks and style but Kippin Sanchez at Vellum said that having a specific invitation in mind is not at all necessary. Still, examples are welcome. Also, being open-minded is very helpful. “Brides know their gown, flowers and cake but they haven’t necessarily finalized the paper.” After browsing, then selecting, the wedding stationery is typically narrowed to three or four choices before “sleeping on it,” Sanchez said. To make the final selection, bring along Mom (she’s also great on etiquette) or whoever is hosting the wedding. The groom might not volunteer for this one unless he’s a graphic artist!

MAKING THE CAKE APPOINTMENT? Take along pictures from magazines and maybe a photo of your dress or veil as well. “I love to create new designs by incorporating different elements from the bride’s veil or dress in a subtle way,” said Francie Valenta at Encore Baking Co. She also likes to see swatches of the bridesmaids dress or photos of the bridal flowers or even a paint swatch! “I get a good idea of what the bride and groom like and it helps personalize their wedding cake." Have an idea of how many guests will be served. This may determine if you’ll need a 3-tier or 4-tier cake. Don’t forget to come hungry and ready to taste cake. Bring parents or bridesmaids:”It’s fun when “cake lovers” come along to taste!” ❖

ONLY THIRTY MINUTES, REALLY? It’s all about muscle maintenance By Diana Losciale

Y

ou spend thirty minutes watching a sitcom, or doing a load of laundry, or reading and sending emails, cooking a decent meal or chatting on the phone. You do have time for a daily 30-minute walk. No excuses. “So many people are dissuaded from exercising because they think they need a gym or equipment. But walk every day and work up to 30 minutes,” said Casey Schulte, personal trainer and general manager at 20 Minutes to Fitness. That walk can get your heart rate up and will work your muscles. And it’s all about working the muscles. Besides energy and toning, keeping muscles fit may preclude the stooping or shuffling that can occur with aging. Yes, lifting free weights three or four times a week is good. Interval training with its short, intense bursts of activity mixed with more moderate intervals of exercise is beneficial and gets high marks from the fat-and-flab burning fitness pros. A high intensity workout for a short time increases the heart rate and tones the muscles as much as an hourlong workout at a lesser intensity, if you are doing it correctly, and correctness is key, Schulte said. Want to knock 10 more minutes off that half-hour workout time? Teamed with a personal trainer who watches every move and corrects it to perfection and using special low impact machines at 20 Minutes to Fitness, you can get a maximum workout in 1200 seconds. You can, if you like, do it barefoot or wearing your suit and then return to work. 56

S E A S O N S

|

"That walk can get your heart rate up and will work your muscles." Casey Schulte, personal trainer “The equipment is key because it’s balanced differently. No matter what muscle you’re working, it will maximally challenge it,” Schulte said. “It’s intense. Once a week is great for getting results and twice a week is ideal.” Muscles need stimulus that they’re not used to in order to change, to become stronger. That’s how the 20 Minutes to Fitness program is designed. The results? It builds strength, improves posture and increases the individual’s energy. It works. Each exercise is performed slowly and correctly, taking wear and tear off the joints. Every movement is done correctly up to the point of muscle failure. The equipment is highly efficient. It’s about physiology. It’s also about your trainer who does each exercise with you, encourages perfection in form, knows when you’re compensating, and also how to accommodate any special issues, Schulte said. No time for fitness? Walk, dance, mow the lawn, take up the 20 Minutes to Fitness challenge, play tennis, run around the block or swim, but do something daily to keep those muscles toned and revving and to maintain that spring in your step. ❖

or some, a house becomes home the minute they move in with all their belongings. But for one Ladue couple, it took substantially more time and a creative bit of fine-tuning before settling into their home that was custom built…for someone else! The stately manse nestled in a quiet cul de sac on St. Louis Country Club grounds was one of three custom homes developed in the early ‘90s. As any homeowner knows, what works practically for one family’s lifestyle may be contradictory to the needs of another’s. And over a nearly 20-year span, modern inventions may well trump traditional conventions when it comes to the efficiencies and comforts of home. So with an eye to their needs now and into the future, the current owners planned a transformation that would work for them. “We loved the house, how it looked outside,” says the owner. “The bones of the house were good, the size and scale of the rooms, heights of the ceilings and the layout. It

was good for entertaining on a large or small scale.” But how to make a house your own when it was built for someone else? The answer, and no doubt the devil, is in the details. You start with the bones, she says. Working with a familiar construction company, the couple proceeded room by room to adjust, alter, add and delete the elements that they envisioned would make their home the haven they sought to create at this stage of their life. At first sight, one perceives a seemingly traditional 1½ story home, symmetrically designed in harmony with its surroundings. That first impression belies the expanse of house beyond the 1 ½ story entry—two full stories with a lower level that opens onto brick-enclosed, manicured grounds surrounding a pool. “I like a house that appears small but isn’t,” says the owner. Over a year, the couple planned changes precisely, with an eye for detail and decorum. It was a long process with

painstaking attention to what the owner calls “small adjustments that make things infinitely more convenient.” And moving at this stage also meant accommodating a substantial collection of art, antiques and accoutrements amassed over the years. Once they moved in, it took another six months of interior work until they had a home they could call their own. The owner says she is grateful to have had the ability to adjust “what we did or didn’t want.” Some were minor adjustments, such as the width of a door,

A “falling leaves” marble wall in the hearth room is framed with coordinating tile to make the fireplace a focal point. A built-in seat below the fireplace is lined with copper to hold firewood.

centering a light fixture, adding a bit of molding or removing a door altogether. Other changes were more involved. They added beams to the hearth room ceiling making the fireplace the focal point to create a cozy environment for that intimate space. In the first-floor sunroom, they replaced eight windows with four, providing a more expansive view of the garden and grounds. “It opened up the whole room,” the owner says. A multi-use, first-floor library had distinctive characteristics, including arched inset bookcases and a bay window that affords an imposing view of the grounds behind the house. They covered the walls in walnut and replaced a bank of built-in shelves in the north wall with a full-length window to brighten up that well-used area. One of the more substantial changes was removing the back stairs to install an elevator. “The stairs took up a lot of room. We don’t have children living at home, and we think the space is better utilized with an elevator. There may be a time when we need an elevator, and it’s great for transporting luggage,” she says. 80

Built-ins on either side of the fireplace provide functional use of space for the library. Covering the walls in walnut added a warmth and richness to the room. (Right) Arched inset bookcases line a wall to anchor the room.

On the main floor, behind the elevator where the stairs were, the mudroom/ laundry room was expanded and reconfigured in order to directly access the service door and the garage. Additional space upstairs was reworked to create a guest suite with two bedrooms, two full baths, a library and a laundry room/mini-kitchen. Upstairs, in the master bedroom, the couple added a fireplace and a bay window, which was in harmony with the bay window in the library below. “It improved the look from outside and really made the bedroom a major suite,” says the owner. And in the master bath, the simple addition of glass blocks in the shower wall was just enough to let in sufficient natural light. What would have been a fifth bedroom adjacent to the master suite became a closet and her husband’s bath. “It’s my favorite creative thing,” she says. “My husband and I have never shared a bathroom in our life. I converted that bedroom to a huge master closet and bath, with all built-in closets.” She left the room separate, rather than incorporating it into the master bedS E A S O N S M A G A Z I N E D I G I T A L .C O M

room so that the next occupants could, if they choose, convert it back to the original bedroom. “There are more ways to make a home yours than just redecorating,” says the owner. “It’s interesting how you can live with something for so long and be happy, and someone makes a change and you think, why didn’t I think of that? We had the opportunity to make those choices and changes and we are thrilled with the results.” “Building a house one prioritizes, and not everyone has equal priorities,” she says. And priorities change. The changes this couple made to a beautiful custom-built home make it infinitely more livable for their lifestyle and priorities. “We made changes that work forward, that are suitable for our livability now and later.” ❖ S E A S O N S M A G A Z I N E D I G I T A L .C O M
