Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

ur Put yo ere y wh mone s ouse i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

helP the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

get better service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Department, in recognition of their 100th Anniversary. LEGO displays, interactive building opportunities, a treasure hunt and a professional LEGO builder are just some of the reasons to spend time in Sidney for the 2014 Sidney Family Day LEGO Weekend. Due to overwhelming attendance in 2013, this year’s event takes place over three days, and in a variety of venues throughout town. There will be so much more to see, and to build! The 2014 Sidney Family Day Weekend kicks off with a full day of special LEGO displays and programming at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre on Saturday February 8th. Underwater LEGO? Absolutely! On Sunday February 9th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sidney welcomes back Robin Sather, Canada’s only LEGO professional. Robin will be on site at the Sidney Fire Hall for a special open house, and he’ll be building a large scale model of one of Sidney’s own fire trucks. Check out fire trucks on display, find out if you have what it takes to be a fire fighter, and support the Sidney Fire Department in their 100th anniversary year. Monday February 10th will find Robin Sather at the Mary Winspear Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a day of family fun and interactive building. Visitors will help Robin build a large

A Plateful of Local Flavours on the Peninsula! by Steve Duck

Coming your way in March … local tastes to delight the palate!

Awaken your taste buds to all that is locally grown and produced on the Saanich Peninsula. Sip & Savour Sidney takes place on Thursday, March 27th at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. With the Spring’s colourful flower bloom, emerging tree buds and thoughts of planting the garden, welcome the season with a celebration of flavours from your regional backyard. Buy local. Cook local. Eat local. While your taste buds sing, enjoy the sounds of local musicians Charlie Burton and the Craig Henderson Trio as you stroll through the gardens and fields of the Saanich Peninsula … all under one roof! Learn more about supporting sustainable agriculture and chat with local food experts. The evening opens with a tasting or two of wine, spirits and cider featuring beverages from local producers. Here, you will be able to indulge in the Peninsula’s finest and find your new favourite. Try pairing your drink of choice with local treats … delicious hard and soft cheeses, handmade chocolates, or dip with a biscotti. Sip a little before you Savour a lot … Enjoy a gourmet dinner prepared by Red Seal-certified Chef Graham Little from Island Culinary Services. Savour a buffet of local vegetables, fruits, meats. and seafoods – a menu that will highlight the exceptional foods produced on the Saanich Peninsula. Be prepared for an evening of culinary excellence made with quality local products! “This is an exciting time to be involved in food production on Vancouver Island. For decades, big food companies have been marketing to us with the message that quick, easy, convenient, and cheap are the most important attributes of food. However, there’s a

significant and growing community here that sees how limited this view is. We see how food can enrich our lives in so many ways,” says Heather Stretch of Saanich Organics. “I get to experience the joy of growing good food from seed to market. But all of us can experience the enjoyment and fulfillment that comes from preparing and eating beautiful, delicious, sustainably produced, healthy local food. Rather than rushing through a mediocre meal and rushing off to another event, the meal itself can be the event. We can sustain not only our bodies, but also our relationships, our communities, and our agricultural lands every time we eat. I eagerly anticipate Sip & Savour Sidney as an opportunity to celebrate our local food culture.” Dave Friend of the Growing Young Farmers Society: “On Vancouver Island we have become dependent on imported food … to such an extent that if the transport bringing our food came to a stop – for whatever the reason – we would then have only 72 hours of food supply! Therefore, we really do need more people growing more health-friendly organic food ON Vancouver Island FOR Vancouver Island!” Tickets are $55 per person for the full evening, all inclusive and can be purchased from the Mary Winspear Cultural Centre, online at www.marywinspear.com, by phone at 250-656-0275 or in person at the Centre. Advance ticket sales only, NO tickets will be available at the door. We are pleased to offer options to meet most dietary needs. Sip & Savour Sidney will profile and encourage the public to support local farmers. Support local and become immersed in the region’s delicious beverages and foods at Sip & Savour Sidney, an event that will delight your palate. A remarkable evening you don’t want to miss!

Now, for the first time in popular music, Classic Albums Live recreates the greatest albums from the '60s and '70s live on stage, note for note and cut for cut. All of the focus is put into the music, not into imitation or impersonation. They research each and every album extensively and go to great lengths to reproduce each and every sound live. Classic Albums Live brings to the stage whatever it takes to get it right.

Buddy Holly Tribute by Johnny Vallis Mary winSPear centre

Buddy Holly was "the single most influential creative force in early Rock n’ Roll." Tragically, on February 3rd, 1959 he left us, but his music and will never fade away. In his tribute to the Rock icon, Johnny Vallis perfectly portrays both the look and the sound as he rolls out Buddy’s greatest hits. With the addition of an upright bass, drums and a second guitar Vallis creates the authentic experience, just like Holly and the boys, playing the vintage instruments with all the spirit of Rock and Roll.
