Reclaiming Its Role As The Epicenter Of New York City

New York’s Oldest New Neighborhood

“The re-envisioned Seaport District will be a vibrant, highly engaging area while providing a critical catalyst for the revitalization of Lower Manhattan. It’s creating a one-of-a-kind experience incorporating the best that New York has to offer in entertainment, culture, shopping and dining in a development that is economically viable while effectively meeting the needs of the neighborhood and showcasing the Seaport as a treasured part of New York City’s past and future.” David R. Weinreb Chief Executive Officer, The Howard Hughes Corporation

The Shift Downtown The ongoing revitalization of Lower Manhattan, anchored by City Hall, New York Stock Exchange, Woolworth Building and flanked by the Hudson and East Rivers and New York Harbor, has been buoyed in recent years by mounting interest from luxury retailers, restaurant groups and cultural institutions angling for a foothold in the area that gave birth to the modern city. More and more unique destinations are opening, inevitably attracting even more people to the vicinity: according to figures compiled by the Alliance for Downtown New York, there were 18 new store openings in the second quarter of 2014, more people moving in (now 68,000 residents, up from 24,000 in 2000) and a few thousand more hotel rooms coming online. Interestingly, the renaissance of Downtown seems almost predestined, given the area’s illustrious trading and commerce history. Still, with all the developments underway, Downtown Manhattan retains an authentic character where eclecticism triumphs.

Today, the Lower Manhattan streetscape is brimming with 24/7 activity and energy that make it the fastest growing neighborhood in New York City—and a neighborhood in need of amenities that pose significant opportunities for the visionary retailer or restaurateur. The Seaport District is currently home to a diverse array of retailers, and once the new Pier 17 opens, the complex will offer a unique open-air ground floor that will allow for the fullest appreciation of the New York skyline. And opportunities for outdoor movies and dining will co-exist with glasswalled boutiques. The East Side of Lower Manhattan is in the midst of a revival as the Battery Maritime Building, Seaport District and Water Street corridor are slated to reveal a compelling alternative to the Battery Park City environment. And companies like Hugo Boss, CondÊ Nast, Time Inc. and Revlon have all recently relocated to the area adding new flavor and diversity.

Seaport District has a growing collection of eclectic brands that are completely exclusive to the neighborhood.

Over the next 3 years, The Howard Hughes Corporation will create an internationally recognized New York district for unique entertainment, food and fashion.
