Thanks for checking out the 2013 edition of the Design Work Life Holiday Gift Guide! If you’re unfamiliar with our usual format, the heart of the DWL Gift Guide is a series of guides based on the four elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire. The idea was inspired by a concept shared by pastry chef Will Goldfarb in a talk I attended a few years back. He presented the idea that since there are over six billion people in the world, but only twelve astrological signs, then in theory you should be able to please every living person in the world with only twelve dishes. So we decided to simplify the concept a bit, by paring down the twelve astrological signs to the four elements, and apply it to gift-giving.
If you’re not into astrology, not to worry. We’ve covered several more traditional gift-giving themes, as well as a few guides to all things holiday. And this year we’ve also added a new section dedicated to “Designer Goodies” which you can check out starting on page 36. Each and every product was chosen with creative, designfocused people in mind. The Water signs are associated with growth processes, imagination, identification and emotion, and people with a lot of water in their make up are sensitive, seductive, intuitive, imaginative, insightful, secretive, loving, learned, and moody.
