16 Greetings from the SEAFC Board

After the Montgomery Alabama conference the committee forwarded a survey form to the Exhibitors, Attendees, The Board of Directors and the Presenters to determine how we could improve on the conference. We had many good comments from attendees, exhibitors and presenters on the Montgomery conference and some really good ideas. The committee took those ideas and comments to heart and has come-up with an education packed program. There will be opportunities to network with your fellow members and attend education programs that we think will interest all those attending. The Hampton Fire Department Chairperson Bettie Reeves Nobles {Assistant Chief} and her committee have been working hard ever since the Louisville Conference to make sure that you have plenty to do and enjoy in Hampton. There are 15 education classes planned and over 100 exhibitors for you to visit and see what is new for the fire service and emergency medical services. On Friday the exhibit hall will be open to all fire personnel who wish to visit and there will be no cost, all they need is to be in uniform or have a fire department ID. This year there will be one day and two day Education Registrations available for those who want to attend the education classes and not participate in the full conference. I believe we have selected some very interesting education topics and know that we have selected top notch presenters. The agenda is part of this newsletter and there are links to the hotel, attendee registration forms, exhibitor information and forms. For those of you who sign up early there will be discounts which make the conference very affordable, so get those applications filled out and get the purchase orders and or checks written and in to the Executive Director.

This will be our 4th year at a full conference and each year we have increased attendees, exhibitors and education programs. We have the honor this year of having Chief Dennis Rubin as not only a presenter but he will also give the Key Note Address. Hampton Virginia is a beautiful City and the Conference Center is state of the art and is attached to the host hotel the Embassy Suites. On Wednesday evening we will be having a meet and greet and Thursday evening we will have a VIP night with the vendors and on Friday night our Formal Banquet, Key Note Address and Installation of Officers. We have had a good response from our exhibitors so we believe we will have to look at rooms in an over flow hotel close to the conference center. The Executive Director has gotten us a great rate for rooms, so book early before our block of rooms run out. We are offering early registration discounts for all levels of attendees; check out the information included in this newsletter. Within the news letter you will find information and links to the hotel, be sure to book your room early by using the link to receive the discount. If you have any questions feel free to contact our Executive Director or myself.

Attendee Comments of the 2011 Annual SEAFC Conference in Montgomery Alabama Below you will find a few of the comments taken from the surveys that were sent to all attendees. ―Anytime you can bring Fire Chiefs together from across the country together, in my opinion, is always a success. There are many challenges in the fire service today and what better way to find resolve than to bring the leaders together under one roof to share problems, information, and solutions. I thoroughly enjoyed the conference and look forward to many more. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―The expo was extremely well laid out, and the presenters were interesting and informative.‖ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―Programs were well planned and enough to fill the time, more would be hard to attend all. Hotel and staff did a great job. The venue was just Great, the Montgomery Fire Rescue did a great job. Many Thanks to all had a part in putting the conference together. A great job by the Executive Committee as well‖. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―The expo was extremely well laid out, and the presenters were interesting and informative.‖ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―Good educational programs and vendor displays. Good location‖ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―The venue at Montgomery was excellent, and I liked the vendor presentations. The keynote was appropriate and having the presence from the International the best I have seen since I started attending.‖ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―The vendor hall was the better of the 3 conferences that I have been to. The lectors were informed and current.‖ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―Great participation by host department. Great number of vendors, Good partner program. Good educational topics‖ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―Well attended and subject matter was spot on.‖ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ―The past few conferences were held in great cities with wonderful hotel accommodations. The Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery was by far the best hotel we stayed at and the hotel staff and food were awesome. Also, the location was close to other restaurants and attractions that were in walking distance. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Conference Committee took the advice of some of the attendees by increasing the Education Programs and arranged the vendor opportunity's so as not to conflict with the education programs. We appreciated the comments and have taken every step to improve the agenda.

Board positions that will be open for the 2012 year are: >State Directors for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and North Carolina >Officer position Second Vice President

The SEAFC Board has been notified that Chief Deron Wilson of the John’s Creek Fire Department, John’s Creek, GA is being endorsed by the Georgia State Fire Chiefs Association for the office of Second Vice President for 2012. Chief Wilson announced his candidacy at the 2011 SEAFC Conference in Montgomery, AL.

Greetings SEAFC Colleagues, As we close out 2011 I am sure each of you can join me in reflecting back over the year and say we had some of the best of times and some of the worst of times. Our division saw a considerable amount of destruction from natural disaster but saw the true spirit and dedication of the fire service as we handled each of these with true professionalism. We have that true professionalism only because we foster relationships, mentor to our next generation and continue to train diligently for the future. A lot has happened over this year with the SEAFC as well. We had a successful conference in Montgomery, Alabama and are gearing up for Hampton, Virginia in June 2012 followed by North Charleston in 2013. I want to focus on a major accomplishment for the SEAFC, which is the level of education and professional development we are bringing to our membership. When I speak of the professionalism that exists, it will only continue to exist if we continue our sound practices of mentoring, networking and training/education. If you have not been to a recent conference you should examine why not. To quote Chief Eddie Phillips, Tennessee State Director who came back on the board after a few years focused on local affairs, “the conference was a mini FRI”. To the Professional Development committee that was worth more than a million dollars as the goals that were set 4 years ago had come to fruition. This reflects back to the fact that our division is moving forward, being proactive and finding new ways to be successful during a tough economic climate. To equate that to realism…The future is bright for SEAFC. I do want to note that the 2012 Annual Leadership Conference is quickly approaching and this edition of the news letter is dedicated to the conference showing you what you have to look forward to. The dedicated professionals of the conference committee have put together yet another stellar conference that you will not want to miss. Further it is one that you must have your current and future command staff attending. The future belongs to those who prepare and the Southeastern Division is striving diligently to provide every opportunity to do so.

In an effort to enhance our professional Development programs we have solidified relationships and have embarked on collaborative efforts with partners on pod casting, live blog talk radio programs and webinars in an effort to enhance not only the value of your membership, but more importantly, the opportunity to share knowledge and utilize existing technologies to provide quality and timely training. We run a scheduled Blog Talk Radio Program with www.Firefighternetcast.com titled “The Chiefs Trumpet”. Our last program partnered with Chris Naum host of “Taking it to the Streets Program” focusing on change in the fire service and getting it from the Chief’s Office to the Streets. At the 2011 conference we streamed live programs from the floor as well as recording other programs for webinars. As you can see, now is the time to get your junior chief officers and company officers involved in the SEAFC. There is a lot of education and opportunities for them to grow and develop. During the last quarter we launched our new web site. It is still being added to and will continue to grow each month. We have partnered with Target Safety to bring you a behind the scenes opportunity to access even more training materials for your department. You should see this launch out in the first quarter of 2012. We want you to get engaged as I requested at the beginning of my Presidency. We are only successful if we all engage. With that said please provide us with training materials, articles, power points, training opportunities, etc that can be shared with the rest of the division. In closing I want to thank everyone who serves on a committee, the Board of Directors and the Executive Director for all the hard work this past year. The SEAFC is the best Division because of the people who are the Division...you! On behalf of Executive Director Pat Cimini and the SEAFC Board of Directors we want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!!!! See you in Hampton! Sincerely,

Douglas K. Cline President
