An evening with Mitch Resnick, creator of Scratch at County Library Tallaght
Supporting Business Start-Up and Enterprise
On Tuesday 1st May, in collaboration with ITT Dublin, County Library Tallaght was delighted to welcome Mitch Resnick, LEGO Papert Professor of Learning Research and head of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. In 2011 Resnick was awarded the McGraw Prize in Education and is internationally renowned as a guru helping young people to engage in creative learning experiences. As part of his research, Resnick and his team have developed Scratch, a programming language that makes it easy for children and young people to create their own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art - and share these creations on the web. To date, there have been almost 2.5 million projects created on Scratch. As Mitch explained, Scratch allows young people to use new technology to express themselves, at a time when creative thinking is more important than ever. With the publication by the government in January 2012 of the ICT action plan, Scratch has been identified as a way to inform and attract more talented students to consider computing programmes. In Ireland the use of Scratch with primary and second level students has been pioneered by Clare McInerney in Lero and Stephen Howell in ITT Dublin, both of whom took part in a panel discussion on the night with Mitch and his other team members. Over 80 people attended the evening including primary, post primary and third level educators all eager to develop Scratch as a learning tool. South Dublin Libraries, in collaboration with ITT Dublin, is planning to set up a Scratch Clubhouse in County Library Tallaght. Watch Mitch’s presentation at http://www.southdublinlibraries.ie/videos
South Dublin Libraries continue to provide valuable support for small and medium business enterprises with seminars, networking opportunities, mentoring and access to a dedicated collection of books on business in each branch library. Workshops offered on a regular basis include Business Idea Generation, Sustainable Business Opportunities and Life Coaching. One of the most popular events is ‘Check out a Champion’ which offers people a chance to spend time with experts in various fields including business planning, marketing, financial control and social media.
Have you got Maths Eyes? South Dublin Libraries have partnered with IT Tallaght and the Digital Hub to deliver Maths Eyes – a programme designed to show children and families how interesting and useful Maths can be. Designed as part of our response to the national strategy document ‘Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life’ the Maths Eyes initiative was delivered in association with primary schools across the County and the Dublin West Education Centre. Over 500 school children took part in the programme developing their own Maths Eyes and discovering the fun in mathematics. On May 24th as part of the ITT’s 20 Year Celebrations hundreds of Maths Eyes participants with adult and community learners groups mingled with staff, international partners and local dignitaries in the bright summer sunshine bringing the programme to a conclusion for 2012.
The Evolution of eBooks Continues South Dublin Libraries were the first library service in Ireland to offer eBooks from the library website in 2009 (winning Ireland’s government award in the process!). The demand for digital books has grown since then as people adapt to reading on their smart phones or tablet devices. The library service has also created a range of local heritage eBooks and these are being read by Irish people across the globe. eBooks are perfect for holidays and can be borrowed from the library website from any where on the globe – all you need is your library card number and your PIN number. eBooks have an automatic return built in and can never be lost.

The top five eBooks across South Dublin Libraries in June include an Irish Language Course, Dubliners By James Joyce, A Business Guide, Shane Ross’s The Bankers and A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Eagan.
Friendly County Strategy. South Dublin Libraries will support this initiative with programmes offering opportunities for older people in the areas of lifelong learning, well-being, digital literacy, cultural enhancement and lots more.
TEDxTallaght
Bealtaine 2012 – celebrating creativity as we age
Have you heard of TED? It is a non-profit programme devoted to Technology, Entertainment and Design. South Dublin Libraries have just received their third license to hold a prestigious TED event. Last year’s TEDxTallaght received a fantastic response from speakers and audience members. You can view last year’s talks at the TEDx YouTube Channel TEDxTallaght will be held at The Victory Centre, Firhouse, Tallaght, Dublin 24 on Thursday 15th November running from 7pm to 10pm. The theme of our TEDx event for this year is When Stories Collide: We are all wired to tell stories, but today these stories are told in new and exciting ways. The programme for the evening includes a line up of engaging speakers talking about creative ideas and innovative initiatives such as Catriona Crowe, Manager of the Irish Census Online project, and Paul Smith, social media expert and author of Great moments in Sportsmanship. The event is free but booking is required. For
South Dublin Libraries took part once again in this national festival with a programme of workshops, lectures, demonstrations, performances and lots more during the month of May.
The Poetry Shed South Dublin Libraries won a bid for funding under the national Writers in Libraries Scheme with the age-friendly project Poetry Shed, developed by Clondalkin Library in collaboration with the Clondalkin Active Age Group and Active Age Men-only groups in Rathcoole, Newcastle and Knockmitten. The Poetry Shed initiative is aimed at male readers and non-readers over 55 years. It explores poetry, offering to participants the opportunity to write their own poems and get them published. The Poetry Shed will start in the autumn and will be facilitated by poet Philip Lynch.

About the Writers in Libraries Scheme Established by the Arts Council, this scheme provides funding for innovative literary programming. It is cofunded by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the An Chomhairle Leabharlanna/Library Council, and is managed and administered by Poetry Ireland/Éigse Éireann.

R E ADIN G WITH SOUTH DUBLIN LIBRARIES
Presidential Visit President Michael D. Higgins praised South Dublin Libraries at the opening in March of the School Library at Holy Rosary National School, Ballycragh, Tallaght. Mr Higgins noted that “libraries are more important in times of economic challenge” and since “a book comes to the world to be read” he was delighted that librarians not only preserve the books but also promote reading amongst the community. The new school library was opened with support and advice from the Children’s Services Librarians from South Dublin Libraries and teachers were also supported with the establishment of a Bedtime Reading Club for junior infants, a Junior Reading Club and an Adult Reading Group for parents. President Michael D. Higgins was very impressed with South Dublin Libraries services and is now our most popular Library Champion. World Book Celebrations The Presidential visit was the highlight of World Book Day 2012 (1st March) for South Dublin Libraries which had plenty on offer for World Book Day, to attract young and old! The Biggest Book Show on Earth was shown at County Library Tallaght, when 80 school children came along to see their favourite authors on screen, streamed live from the UK. For adults, Laurence Foster enthralled audiences at Clondalkin, Lucan and County Library Tallaght with his one man show “Dickens in Dublin”. You could hear a pin drop in the libraries, as they were transformed back to Dickens’ time. South Dublin Libraries took also part in another worldwide celebration with World Book Night on 23rd April as giver of 25 copies of The Damned United by David Peace from

Worldbooknight.org. The books were given away on the night via a South Dublin Libraries Twitter chat on sports books and sportsmanship led by Paul Smith, author of Great Moments of Sportsmanship . . . Paul was tweeting from Dubai making it a truly global event!
Summer Reading Buzz
Children’s literacy levels drop during summer holidays and this reading challenge is an ideal way of keeping literacy on track. Children are invited to sign up in their local library and commit to read at least 10 books of their choice. They can keep a record of the books they read using the special membership card and when it is complete enter it in the draw for a fabulous prize.
Children’s Book Festival
Takes place every October in all of our libraries. This festival is a celebration of books and reading for children. The programme includes visits from both established and emerging authors and illustrators for all ages. As always, this year there will be a variety of workshops and activities designed to awaken the imagination and encourage children to enter the world of reading.
We are delighted to announce our inaugural Red Line Book Festival which will run from 14th to 17th November. Over the previous 10 years, South Dublin Libraries have run a Readers Day hosted by the writer Dermot Bolger attracting over 300 people each year. This one day event is now being expanded into a larger more dynamic festival taking place in cultural venues in Tallaght and throughout the county. Full details and programme for the Red Line Book Festival will be available in our libraries and at www.redlinebookfestival.com in the Autumn.

Digital Literacy Computer Classes for Adults are held in all our
library branches. Touch Type Read Spell (TTRS) is software designed for people
with Dyslexia and reading difficulties which helps them develop fluidity in their reading. It is available in all libraries and can be used by adults and children. Language Conversation Groups held in our library branches

Local Studies South Dublin Libraries collect South Dublin County’s culture and memory resources. The Local Studies Section at the County Library Tallaght is specifically dedicated to heritage material relating to the history and development of South Dublin. The collection includes over 10,000 items such as books, newspapers, periodicals, maps, photographs, prints, ephemera and audio-visual material. 1916 Lecture Series This popular series of lectures was given by Dr. Miriam Moffitt of the Department of History, NUI Maynooth during May & June at the County Library Tallaght.
Call for 1916 Rising Memorabilia South Dublin Libraries Local Studies Team have been assembling a photographic collection of 1916 Rising-related memorabilia for display on their website http://source.
Connecting to the Past: Mapping South Dublin County in Time South Dublin Libraries’ Historical Mapping service makes the paper-based map collection of the Local Studies Section available interactively in layers to all citizens of South Dublin County wishing to access it. Historical mapping is available 24/7 via the internet at http://gis.sdublincoco.ie/historical_mapping/. This provides access to a series of maps dating from 1760 including today’s aerial photography and Ordnance Survey mapping. The impact of the service can be seen in the increased usage of the service by customers and the saving in staff time assisting customers to locate the map they require and in preparing copies for them. Currently 500 users a week on average use the service. Customer feedback has been very complimentary, particularly with regard to its availability and its functionality. The system is expandable as other map series and layers can be added to the site. The project concept, management and delivery involved collaborative working between South Dublin Libraries and the Spatial Data Team from South Dublin County Council’s ICT Department.

A call was made through the Local Studies blog and social media presence for scans and photographs of relevant items such as medals, documents, weapons and other ephemera that families in South Dublin may like to share. Seven private individuals “answered the call”, donating items that were subsequently digitised. These 163 images are either of individual items like medals, or pages of pamphlets, autograph books etc. One individual who came in as a result of the original “1914-1918” call donated 67 spectacular items from the Irish Revolutionary period. These artefacts belonged to her grandfather and are of museum quality, including much unpublished material. The Local Studies team are continuing to approach organisations known to have archives relating to the Period. Honourable mention must go to the Capuchins in Church Street who were extremely generous with their time, and whose holdings were made freely available to scan and photograph with no restrictions. South Dublin Libraries Local Studies acquired from Adam’s Auctioneers 25 glass photographic plates which have been digitised and show many interesting and unusual images relating to the Civil War and War of Independence.

Rewind: a partnership between South Dublin Libraries Local Studies team and the Tallaght Echo newspaper South Dublin Libraries’ Local Studies Team recently began a new partnership with the Tallaght Echo supplying articles, photos and facts about the history of South Dublin County for the paper’s weekly local history page. The articles focus on everything from village histories to famous natives and residents, industry to folklore and military history to the histories of local schools. Articles are written by library staff and images are provided from South Dublin Libraries’ collections. A recent page featured South Dublin County’s links to the Easter Rising, and provided a platform for the search for memorabilia which will be photographed and added to Source, South Dublin’s digitized data collection. It is hoped to get local historians and local history societies involved in providing content. As well as promoting the history and heritage of the county, Rewind is proving to be a great tool for South Dublin Libraries to promote its Local Studies services and events.

A Chinese and Irish Cultural Celebration at County Library Tallaght The fiery year of the Dragon 2012 was celebrated with noise, colour and the best of Irish and Chinese cultural traditions on Thursday January 26th 2012 at the County Library Tallaght. This inaugural celebration was a collaboration between South Dublin Libraries, South Dublin County Council and ITT Dublin. The evening spectacular featured an enthralling Lion Dance accompanied by live drummers by members of the Chinese Irish Cultural Academy – a feast of noise and colour which thrilled adults and children alike. Chinese and Irish traditional stories followed with master storyteller Seosamh O’Maolalai, before a young troupe of Irish dancers performed a wonderful routine wearing a selection of Irish dancing costumes. Other music adding to the spirit of the evening included traditional Chinese Gu Zheng music and traditional Irish musicians Aoife Desmond and friends. A charming addition to the evening was two young Chinese boys performing Irish music on the recorder. The Chinese and Irish Cultural celebration was enjoyed enormously by members of the public (Irish and Chinese) and the Chinese students from ITT who attended the event. Beyond Eye Level – Engaging with Architecture The County Library Tallaght worked closely with the South Dublin County Architects department and facilitated a number of workshops during Engage with Architecture week, highlighting the importance of the built environment on our lives. Through symbolic, significant, public and private structures and spaces architecture represents the value of a community both past and present in concrete form. The Beyond Eye Level programme focused on providing knowledge and understanding through the engagement of professionals and the participation of children and young adults. A dedicated space in the County Library Tallaght, the “Thinking Space”, was created where all were invited to be designers and let the imagination about our built environment take over. Urban Chess and Inside/Out workshops for school groups and families were run by PAC Studio Architects. There was also a Choreoramble through Tallaght for families with former dancer-in-residence Louise Costello.
Engineers Week Working closely with Caitriona Lambert, Senior Executive Engineer, South Dublin Libraries celebrated Engineers Week for the third year. Engineers’ Week (27th February to 4th March 2012) is a week long programme of nationwide events with the aim of celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland and creating positive awareness about the engineering profession to people of various ages with little or no engineering background. County Library Tallaght hosted a week-long programme of K’Nex workshops which were a huge hit with local schools, while also displaying an exhibition put together by Caitriona and her team.

For the third year, South Dublin Libraries were delighted to collaborate with South Dublin Arts to present Ruaille Buaille Lucan! Children’s Music Festival. With music as its central theme, this family festival celebrates the artistic flavour of local, national and international artists and performers through a host of workshops and performances which take place in Lucan Library, in local schools and other venues around Lucan. The festival was launched on Tuesday 5th June at Lucan Library by Mayor Caitriona Jones. The festival programme can be found at www.southdublinlibraries.ie or www.arts.southdublin.ie
Eco Week South Dublin Libraries were delighted to once again support Environmental Services’ Eco Week celebration in April 2012. Eco Week is all about spreading the message “It’s our Environment, let’s protect it!” A wonderful programme of workshops and activities across the library network help inspire the people of South Dublin County to think about how they affect the Environment and what they can do to protect it. An interesting addition this year was a talk at the County Library Tallaght “Greener Business: Increase Efficiency, Reduce Costs” by Andrea Carroll, sustainable business executive with South Dublin Chamber, which attracted a lot of interest from local businesses.

Free Spirit Festival
International Love:Live Music Day
County Library Tallaght supported Comhairle na nOg’s Free Spirit Festival in May providing space for mental health, relaxation and gaming workshops and help in promoting the festival to their teenage library users. Aimed at young people from 12-18 years, the festival was organised to give young people the information on what is available to them if dealing with stress or when going through difficult times.
National Bike Week South Dublin Libraries are collaborating with Corporate Services to celebrate National Bike Week on Monday 18th June in Chamber Square and the County Library Tallaght. Plans include a “Bling Your Bike” activity, screening of the film “Beauty and the Bike”, “The Smoothie Bike Energy Workshop” and a display of the cycle routes around South Dublin County.
South Dublin Libraries celebrated in style on Thursday June 21st with Love:Live Music events around the County. In collaboration with South Dublin County Arts Office and Corporate Services, lunchtime at the County Library Tallaght was lively with a performance by the Long John Jump Band. The 7-piece band performed in the Courtyard outside County Library Tallaght for staff, members of the public visiting SDCC and the Library and also visitors to Rua Red and the Civic Theatre. Lunchtime live music with Jose Flores was enjoyed by all at Stewarts Library Palmerston, while Clondalkin Library and Castletymon Library welcomed local school children for hands-on percussion workshops with Tempo Music School – a fantastic introduction to music for children.
