president SDTech Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch's professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Tech, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly eletter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Tech, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren.

SDTeCn volleyball coaches Head coach Doug Tabbert Doug Tabbert begins his second season at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology after serving for two years as the head volleyball coach at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. Prior to that Tabbert was the head volleyball coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina for three years. In addition to coaching, Tabbert has provided psychological skills training to various athletes, including the Kansas State University volleyball program, the Bluffton College (Ohio) women's basketball program and a member of the 1996 United States Olympic Track & Field Team. A native of Perry, Kansas, he holds a Master of Education degree in Developmental Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Bachelor of Science degrees in both Business and Psychology from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.

Assistant coach Mike Larsen Mike Larsen, a Rapid City native and graduate of Rapid City Stevens, has joined the staff at South Dakota Tech as assistant volleyball and track coach. Larsen was an instructional technology specialist at Dakota Middle School last year and served 10 years at Little Wound High School as a computer studies teacher. He served as head coach of cross-country and track, and assistant golf coach at various times during his tenure at Little Wound. Larsen has been a competitive runner in marathon races for many years. "I am very pleased that Mike will be joining our staff at Tech. He is a hardworking, and dedicated individual who will give his all in the support of track coach Jerry Schafer and volleyball coach Doug Tabbert," offered Tech athletic director Hugh Welsh.

Assistant coach Lori Whiting Lorie Whiting begins her second season as Lady Hardrocker assistant coach. A 1989 graduate of Tech with a degree in metallurgical engineering, Lorie was a member of the Hardrocker volleyball team for four years from 1985-1988. She worked in private industry following graduation for 10 years and also served as an assistant volleyball coach at Wahoo (NE) High School in 1999. Lorie is married to Keith Whiting (a 1989 graduate with a math degree), and is currently a stay at home mother to Catie, age five, and Tessa age three.

2004 season preview SDTecPl Coach Doug Tabbert's comments about the upcoming season: "The early challenge for us is to establish a team identity as quickly as we can. That is even more important this year with the addition of so many new players. We will look to Leslie Weber, our lone senior, and Rebekah Cornelia, our lone junior, to provide leadership and a sense of stability. They both recognize the importance of that, and Leslie in particular is eager to meet that need. Both had solid springs, and we expect them to play well this fall. We have several newcomers who should provide immediate contributions. Jennifer Markoff has had significant setting experience at both the high school and club level. Kali Olson is a multi-time All-State team member who is a powerful offensive threat. Jennie Malone, another former All-State honoree, should greatly help our team ball control. We have a number of people who can contribute to our success. It is critical that everyone on our roster recognizes their potential to do that and then commits to their respective roles. If that happens, we can be significantly improved over last year."
