Focusing on Outreach in District 3 By Darlene Atkins, District Supervisor, District 3 (Alexandria, Dalkeith, Lancaster, Maxville, St. Andrews and Williamstown)

The SD&G County Library prides itself on the numerous ways in which we endeavor to provide Library service to all. We no longer focus just on the “bricks and mortar” of our facilities. We also provide community outreach within our villages - beyond the walls of our buildings! It is important that our services and programs are available to everyone, including people who are homebound through age or disability. Outreach activities help to build awareness of our services and keep us accessible to all residents. In District 3, our outreach initiatives to local schools, senior’s centres, and retirement homes is making a positive impact. It validates our efforts, and it displays a commitment to how much we care. Our District 3 staff can be seen engaging in various outreach activities throughout the area. Alexandria Branch staff visit and bring reading materials once a month to four different senior centres or retirement homes in the area. As well, staff visit the classes in all the area elementary and secondary schools. Lancaster Branch staff visit the River Garden Retirement Residence delivering materials and conducting an adult story time, while a monthly book exchange has been organized with the Chartwell Long Term Care Residence. Dalkeith Branch staff deliver books to a few homebound patrons in the community, while Maxville Branch staff visit the Maxville Manor on a monthly basis to deliver books and offer an adult story time. Staff have developed relationships with local schools, such as in Williamstown, where the Library Services Assistant (LSA) regularly stops by the public school to promote the branch’s programs, and in St. Andrews where students and staff at the catholic school participate in library programming. Together, we continue to expand our outreach efforts in hopes of spreading the word about the value of the County Library within the communities of SD&G.

Meet the Staff : Helen Kaufman, LSA - Dalkeith Branch How long have you been with the SD&G County Library? In many ways it seems like yesterday, the time has gone by so fast, but in reality I joined the Library in 2004. It has been a fascinating journey since Day One. My work experience, for the first year, was as a Call-In for North Glengarry, then I was chosen as a Branch Support Clerk for the branch in Dalkeith. I have been here ever since, except for a two year stint when I worked at both Alexandria and Dalkeith branches. What do you love the most about working at the Library? The most enjoyable, challenging and satisfying experience for me is the interaction with our patrons. I love working with all age groups, but I have to admit there is a special place in my heart for seniors. I delight in hearing their stories about life experiences, challenges they have encountered, and how reading has enriched their lives. Theirs was a time when a book was a luxury and now they have the luxury of time to read. CNIB books, CDs, DVDs, and Playways are new ways to the same end and I love to show them all that we have available for them. With a growing population of seniors, they will continue to be important to the development of the Library and our communities. If you could tell people one thing about the SD&G County Library, what would it be? Service! Our Library system is about the level of service we provide. Whether helping to find something in our impressive collections of books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, CNIB material - the list goes on! - the service of researching for that class assignment, setting up an email address, writing that resume, or readers’ advisory; it all contributes to a positive Library experience for all ages. What are you reading right now? At the moment, I have eclectic reading tastes. I have been reading about WWI, and for a little mind candy, Rita Mae Brown mysteries. But that’s not to say I would pass up on any new decorating book that crosses my desk! Page 2 NAVIGATOR | WINTER 2016

3-D Printing - Inspiring the World By Courtney Riviere, IT Intern and Casual Support Assistant (Stormont and Dundas)

Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) has always been an inspiration to engineers and scientists alike. From hover-boards to holograms, scientists are trying hard to make childhood dreams come true. Recently, one such Sci-Fi machine has been able to realize these dreams and is becoming more accessible to the average person - the 3-D printer. And now 3-D printing has arrived at the SD&G County Library! A technology directly inspired by the popular Sci-Fi TV series Star Trek, the “Replicator” was able to use particles from any matter and create anything that existed, from machine parts to actual edible meals! The technology of today may not have reached those levels just yet, but their printing abilities are still vast and exciting. Library staff are proud to introduce the Ultimaker 2 3-D printer. Ultimaker is a leading company in 3-D printing, creating large and smaller household printers. The Ultimaker 2 is one of their most recent that strives to make 3-D printing more accessible, faster, and quieter than ever before. The Ultimaker2 creates objects using a solid plastic in coil format, melting it and then printing the item layer by layer. From figurines to household appliances, movable or solid, the possibilities are almost endless. November and December has allowed Library staff time to create user-friendly 3-D printing instructions and begin to design programs around this new technology. While there is still lots to learn, the printer is ready to make its way to the Morrisburg Branch, where patrons will have the opportunity to print all kinds of creations. Join us in the New Year to create something innovative and inspiring!

Meet the Ultimaker Sneak Peek at some of the programs already scheduled for the 3-D Printer (Morrisburg Branch): MakerSpace Open House, January 7, 3:00-8:00pm A drop- in program to showcase the new addition to the SD&G County Library. Come out and see what types of printing you can do, how the printer works and how you can get involved. 3-D Printing for Teens, January 18, 4:00pm Let’s explore the world of 3-D printing. A chance for teens to come out and learn more about the 3-D printer in a program designed just for them. Maker PreSchool Storytime, January 27, 10:30am An innovative storytime, this program will combine the 3-D printer with story telling in a fun and interactive program. Designed for preschool children with parent/caregiver.

FREEDOM TO READ WEEK - FEBRUARY 21 - 27, 2016

Great Reads! The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood Book review by James Hunter In 2008 the global economy was haunted by the specter of collapse - McMansions were foreclosed upon and shuttered, public money bailed out private corporations, and public confidence in continued economic growth was replaced with insecurity and mistrust. But what if it was worse? Margaret Atwood’s The Heart Goes Last is set against the backdrop of a dystopian landscape where, amidst an almost complete economic collapse, the focal characters of Stan and Charmaine find themselves underemployed and living in their car; it is the only safe-haven they have from the gangs of unemployed marauders. When the opportunity to live in the safety of a self-sustaining community is offered, the couple trade their car for an idyllic lifestyle in a closed community designed to mimic the nostalgic American fantasy of the 1950s. The remainder of the novel examines what people are willing to give up when their back is against the wall, and how in a time of crisis people reconcile what is lost with what is gained. Atwood’s prose is darkly humorous, moving breathlessly from ruminations on infidelity and economic oppression to the downsides of sex robots and the intricate lives of Elvis impersonating gigolos. While The Heart Goes Last won’t likely make its way into the annals of Canadian literary classics like The Handmaid’s Tale or into the pop-cultural landscape like the MaddAddam trilogy (coming soon to HBO), it is a worthwhile exploration of the space where economy, greed, corruption, and the human need for companionship intersect and jostle for position.

Book Club Chatter: The Avonmore Book Club By Kelly DeJong, LSA, Avonmore Branch

Allow me to introduce the Avonmore Book Club (ABC). The ABC meets at the Avonmore branch the last Thursday of every month at 6:30pm. We are always looking for new members to join our group, and we welcome the conversation that they bring to the table. We come from all over North Stormont each month to discuss our latest book and share our personal stories with one another. We take the month of December off to prepare for the holidays, and we take the month of August off, to relax and enjoy the end of summer. Each month offers up something new for our group. This past month we were thrilled to welcome local author Jennifer DeBruin to our group to discuss her book, A Walk with Mary. She enchanted us all with her knowledge of SD&G history and welcomed our questions. It was a thrill to have her with us, and teach us new things about the Seaway that we never knew, and to allow us a deeper glimpse into her family history. Like books, we are each very different and as a result, so is our reading style and book selection. We have read non-fiction books such as the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and The Witness Wore Red. We have read historical fiction such as The Fall of Giants and Sarah's Key. There have been some funny and feel-good stories like The Forgotten Garden and A Walk in the Woods, and some emotional and difficult reads like 12 Years a Slave and Indian Horse. Whether we enjoyed the book or not, we came together to discuss the highs and lows of each one. What makes our club unique is that each of use are in charge of picking a book to read and discuss. Given that we all have our own preferred literary style of book that we like to read, this makes for a wonderful arrangement of book selections. When it is our book month we prepare the format of the evening. Some come with discussion questions, while other months we just gather and talk about what we liked and didn't about the book. One thing is always a guarantee though, and that is the goodies for us all to share. Sometimes it’s a homemade treat and other times it is a healthy snack. When the ABC Club meets, it’s a guaranteed great evening of lively discussion, laughs and delicious treats. Feel free to drop in for a coffee, tea and treat, and join our discussion!

Glen Walter Express By Susan Wallwork, Communications & Marketing Librarian

This past summer, the SD&G County Library partnered with the OLCO Gas Station in Glen Walter to offer an alternative library service to area residents. Residents in the community of Glen Walter and the surrounding areas, can now have access to library materials closer to home and at no charge to residents of South Glengarry! Simply register for a SD&G County Library card online or in a branch. Once Glen Walter has been set as the home branch, orders for library resources can be placed. Library deliveries are made to the gas station every Monday, and patrons can just ask at the front counter for their package of items. Once used, items can also be conveniently returned in Glen Walter and dropped in the Library book return box located on the west side of the building. Library staff at the Lancaster Branch process all requests made during the week, and extended loan periods are given to allow for the longer times between deliveries. Once you have registered for membership, you can pick your card up at your closest branch of the SD&G County Library, or have it delivered to Glen Walter. All you need is your photo ID to receive your card! The SD&G County Library continues to look for ways to make access to information easy and available to all - the Glen Walter Express is just one more way we are trying to do this. If you live near Glen Walter or in South Glengarry, come and try out our new alternative library service!

NO NEED TO PANIC! Every year, Library memberships “expire” to ensure that staff have the opportunity to verify that patron contact information is up to date and outstanding accounts are settled. Here’s one email we received from a patron who received notice about their membership expiring:

“My library membership nearly over??? In 10 days? I cannot possibly have this happen! What should I do? My existence could never be complete without my library status being in excellent standing. That’s truly as much as I adore my precious community library! Am I in good standing? Would an order of Newfie tea biscuits put me way up there? Anxiously awaiting your reply!”

What is your response when you receive your reminder to renew your Library Membership? Page 13 NAVIGATOR | WINTER 2016

Public Computer Stations If you’ve used a computer in one of our branches over the last few months, then you’ve probably noticed that we’ve upgraded our system! Our computer stations have all been replaced with new hardware and software to offer users a better computing experience. Software such as the Microsoft Suite of products (Word, Excel, etc.) are now loaded on the workstations and new equipment means quicker responses. We’re working hard to figure out any remaining kinks with the upgrade - if you have any problems please speak to any branch staff and we’ll be happy to help you.

And don’t forget, we have a number of mobile devices available to use in our branches. If you want to test out a mobile device, learn how to download an ebook or to surf the web on a tablet, we can help. Some of our branches offer in-house access to the following: Samsung Galaxy, iPad, or Kobo tablets. Just let us know and we’ll do our best to provide you with the device you want. Please note, some locations may need to order the devices from another branch, therefore tablets may need to be requested beforehand. Speak with your branch staff for more information.

Digital Magazines SD&G County Library staff continue to explore the many ways that we can bring access to information to SDG residents. Over the past few years, we’ve discovered that our patrons are increasingly looking for information online and in digital format. Usage of ebooks, digital newspapers and e-audiobooks are all on the rise. And soon, the Library will introduce something new to our digital collection! We are excited to introduce digital magazines through Flipster. Using the Flipster platform, patrons will be able to access their favourite magazines online! We’ve subscribed to over 30 magazines that can all be accessed simply by having a County Library card. Covering a range of interests, access to the e-magazines is available at home or in our branches. Depending on your needs, the magazines can also be downloaded to your device (Apple or Android only) to read offline. Staff will be available in the New Year to provide patrons with more information about this service and help you get started using this new resource. Magazine access just got easier - check out Flipster starting in January 2016!

The Library As MakerSpace — for the very young By Cheryl Servais, District Supervisor, District 2

The term MakerSpace is often used in connection with technology and do-it-yourself projects, but sometimes these activities do not work with our really young patrons, such as preschoolers. For these Library users, we have focused on Early Literacy Kits as a type of MakerSpace activity. Over the last two years, the SD&G County Library has developed several Early Literacy Kits, using the principles from the “Every Child Ready to Read” program developed by the Public Library Association (PLA) and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). These kits incorporate simple objects and allow children to “make” things - make noise, make drawings, make structures, etc. Using five simple, yet powerful practices of talking, singing, writing, reading and playing, these kits help parents and caregivers build early literacy skills with a variety of everyday activities. At this time our kits include:  Letter and number recognition  Sorting and matching  Language skills  Dress up kits  Music kits The Early Literacy Kits are being incorporated in to staff-led preschool programs. Each program can involve one or more of the five practices to help promote the development of literacy skills. Kits are also available for parents/caregivers to use in the Library. Contact your branch staff if you are interested in learning more about these resources.

FREEDOM TO READ WEEK - FEBRUARY 21 - 27, 2016
