These tensions, often resulting in upheavals and unrest, indicate that, despite the weakening of this civilization due to both external and internal causes during the past two centuries, the Islamic world is a living reality with its own religious and cultural values, which remain very much alive for the more than 1.2 billion followers of Islam living in lands stretching from the East to the West.
