ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT How did your passion for photography begin? I have always loved taking pictures and documenting my life and the lives of my friends and family. In 2004, my friends pulled their money to buy me my first digital camera and from then on I was all about photography. A couple years later I traded that camera for my first DSLR (a Canon Rebel), and began really learning how to work with exposure and aperture and everything that goes into taking a picture without just setting it on auto. In 2009, my husband joined me in this endeavor and we began taking family portraits together for our friends who were beginning to have kids.

We began seriously contemplating moving into wedding photography when a friend of ours asked us to cover parts of her wedding day. The photographer she hired was only going to be there for a few hours, and she wondered if we’d take the pictures of her getting ready and the reception afterward. Chris and I fell in love with shooting weddings after that experience. On February 14, 2011 we officially started Next to Me Studios and began expanding to wedding photography. Chris and I have had a blast the last few years, getting to be part of so many great weddings. We’ve made some really good friends along the way, which is an added bonus of being so intimately part of a couple’s wedding day. Both of us love to create beautiful images, and we are constantly striving to find new and unique ways to capture memories.

What is one of your favorite memories from SDC? So many memories! Off the top of my head I loved being part of intramurals, especially ultimate frisbee, random Saturday morning flag football games, going to the Price is Right during sophomore year, and little events like city wide scavenger hunts and GetYour-Roommate-a-Date nights. 6
