Heilt sidan midten av 1800-talet har Flåm vore ein ynda plass for turistar, då engelske Lordar kom hit med båtane sine på leit etter nye område for jakt og fiske. Dei vart innlosjerte på garden til bygdas rikaste mann, Christen Fretheim, og snart såg Fretheim Hotel dagens lys. Med fortida som inspirasjonskjelde kan Fretheim Hotel by på tette møter med det beste av sognekulturen gjennom kortreiste smakar, spektakulær utsikt mot fjord og fjell og interiør og innreiing som tek deg tilbake i tid. Flåm has been attracting tourists since the middle of the 18th Century when English Lords arrived with their boats, looking for new places to hunt and fish salmon. They were accommodated at the farm of the wealthiest man in Flåm, Mr Christen Fretheim, and soon Fretheim hotel was built. With our history as a source for inspiration, Fretheim Hotel can offer close encounters with the best of the Sognefjord culture, local tastes and spectacular views towards the fjord and mountains, and an interior taking you back in time. The world famous Flåm Railway is our next door neighbor and there is a short distance to a variety of activities and attractions. «Where your own history is created» ”Historic Hotels and Restaurants” is a unique organisation, counting many of Norway’s most charming hotels and restaurants as its members. A membership is considered a stamp of quality for the company, but involves continual, high demands and expectations for quality, architecture and the preservation of historical values. The organisation is internationally rooted in Historic Hotels of America, which are supported by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. As a member of Historic Hotels and Restaurants, our aim is to create new stories for our guests, through thrilling experiences with history as a backdrop. We hope that these stories will continue to unfold in the memories of our guests, long after their return home. Although each member of “The Historic” has a distinctive character, they also have several features in common: a warm welcome, an interesting history, traditional design and décor, good service, a friendly atmosphere and a high standard throughout. HISTORIA THE HISTORY Året er 1870, og Lord Wigram frå England får leige Flåmselva. Dei fyrste utlendingane som kom til Flåm var nok laksefiskarar, for elva var rik på fjellaure og laks. Dette lokka mang ein velståande engelskmann og seinare ivrige fiskeentusiastar frå Bergens-området. Fiskarane oppheldt seg på garden til Christen Fretheim – ein kjempe å sjå til og ein drivande kar. Han tok over garden i 1879, i 1890 starta han postkontor, og i 1895 starta han skipsekspedisjonen. Dei som var innlosjerte på Fretheim likte seg godt på garden, og det vart snart trong for eit hotel. Det fyrste huset vart på folkemunne kalla Engelskvillaen og vart snart fylt av laksefiskarar, turistar og anleggsfolk. Det vart so stor etterspurnad av vogner og skyssfolk, at Christen opna skysstasjon i 1902, med 14 hestar i stallen og 10 faste skysskarar. I 1909 kom Marthe Fretheim, Christen sitt syskenborn, for å hjelpe til ved hotellet. Ho var makalaus flink og tok snart over kommandoen ute som inne. Møkjakjerrer framfor trappa og grisebøtter på tunet var detaljar som Christen ikkje hadde tid til å bry seg med, men det gjorde Marthe…

In 1870, Lord Wigram leased the fishing rights to the Flåm river. The first foreign tourists that came to Flåm were avid sports fishermen, lured by the large salmon and trout in the river. Many wealthy Englishmen followed Lord Wigram’s example, and later wealthy Bergeners also came to enjoy the area’s excellent fishing. It was not uncommon for a lucky angler to catch ten salmon on a good day.

Marthe var ei venleg dame, med sans for hagearbeid og det gjekk fort gjetord om den vakre hagen ved hotellet. Gjestene vart også kjend med Marthes omsorg, når skysskaravanane drog oppver fjellet i 10-15 stolkjerrer på rad vart gjestene kledd i avispapir, surra utanpå med lange strikkesjal og putta i skinnposar med varmeflaske. Marthe Fretheim stelte godt med både gjester og personale.

These fishermen often stayed at the farm of Christen Fretheim, the richest man in the village, who was enterprising and physically imposing. He had taken over the farm in 1879; in 1890 he established a post office, and five years later he started a shipping freight service.

Christen Fretheim døyde i 1916, men Marthe vart værande ved hotellet resten av sitt liv – ja endå lenger om me skal tru dei som bur og arbeider ved hotellet. Det vert fortalt at Marthe framleis går sine rundar kvar natt for å sjå at alt er i orden.

The guests enjoyed the hospitality of Fretheim Farm, and soon a hotel was built to cater to their needs. Not surprisingly, the villagers referred to the first building of Fretheim Farm as the English Villa. Soon, the hotel rooms were being booked by eager fishermen, tourists and construction workers. So great was the demand for transportation that in 1902 Christen Fretheim opened a coaching inn. He employed ten full-time coachmen and had 14 horses in his stall. In 1909, Marthe Fretheim came to assist her cousin Christen. She was an excellent organiser and soon took charge of tasks inside and outside the hotel. Christen had little time or concern for details such as feeding the farm’s pigs or getting rid of manure, but fortunately Marthe managed such essential tasks with a skilled hand. She enjoyed gardening, and her hotel garden soon became renowned. The guests keenly appreciated Marthe’s hospitality and good care. When the caravan of coaches carried 10–15 guests up the mountain, Marthe had made sure that a layer of insulating newspapers was tied around their clothes, and that each of them was equipped with a hot water bottle. Marthe Fretheim took great care to ensure the comfort of each of her guests, and in the evening she would guide them up to their rooms, candle in hand. She treated her employees with the same care and respect. Although Christen Fretheim died in 1916, Marthe stayed on at the hotel the rest of her life. Well, some believe she still has a hand in making sure the hotel is friendly and well run. Legend has it that she makes a round every night, seeing that all is well with the guests at her beloved hotel.

TOGET CAFÉ Is situated in the centre of Flåm. We are serving homemade pizza, burger, small dishes, cakes and drinks. FJORD GELATO Is situated within the train station building, opposite the Visitor Centre. We are serving homemade Italian Ice cream with a variety of flavors. SPECIAL OCCASIONS Fretheim Hotel is known for hosting many kinds of special occasions. Weddings, christenings, confirmations, birthday or anniversaries and memorial services are some of the occasions we are managing. Fretheim Hotel offers intimate lounges for smaller dinner parties, and we have banquet halls for big occasions and many guests.

FOOD EXPERIENCE AND RESTAURANT The kitchen at Fretheim Hotel is widely respected for its use of the finest local ingredients in the dishes it prepares. Fortunately, our area has a wealth of quality minded producers providing everything from meat, vegetables, goat cheese and cider. We are serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in our restaurant upstairs. There you have the amazing view over the fjord and mountains. On the ground floor we have our lobby bar which is serving cakes, small dishes and hot and cold drinks.

MATOPPLEVINGAR Kort reist mat har alltid vore servert på hotellet, som er naturlig når me kan få kjøtt, grønnsaker, bær, geitost, cider frå dei mange gode lokal produsentene i kommunen vår. Restauranten vår ligg i 2 etasje på hotellet, med utsikt over fjord og fjell. Her vert det servert frukost, lunsj og middag. Me kan freiste med middagsbuffet i høg sesongen, samt ein spennande meny med innslag av lokale råvarer. I vår lobby bar i 1 etasje servere me kaker, smårettar og god drikke heile året.

Våre mest populære aktivitetar er sykling på Rallarvegen, turar på fjorden med båt eller kajakk, ei reise med den spesielle Flåmsbana, vandreturar i Aurlandsdalen, ølsmaking på lokalt mikrobryggeri. BRYLLAUP – EI VIKTIG HENDING I LIVET Vårt historiske hotel ved fjorden har i meir enn 100 år danna ramma for storslåtte og romantiske bryllaupsfeiringar. I den sjarmerande historiske delen av hotellet ligg festsalane som kan brukast til den store dagen. Rose- og eplehagen er ideell for velkomen-arrangement og fotografering. Det er viktig med ein god dialog før bryllaupet, og hotellet har derfor ein eigen bryllaupskoordinator som skreddersyr bryllaupet etter dei ønska og draumane som brudeparet har for den store dagen. Hvis ein ynskjer kyrkjevigsle kan ein velge mellom fire kyrkjer i området. Dersom ein ynskjer humanistisk vigsle kan ein ha dette på hotellet, anten i hagen eller i ein av våre historiske festsalar. VINTER I FLÅM WINTER IN FLÅM VINTERSTEMNING I FLÅM Fretheim Hotel er glade for å kunne tilby eit heilårsåpent hotell. Kjem du til Flåm om vinteren kan du få oppleva eit unikt og spektakulært fjord og fjellandskap med blåfrosne fossar. Den norske vinteren er heilt spesiell. Sjølv om det vert tidleg mørkt er det fortsatt lyst og koselig inne. Flåm er ein vinterdestinasjon for dei som ynskjer å oppleve vinteren utan ski. Me har fokus på det som er heimekoselig, som fyr på peisen, god kortreist mat, lun gløgg og enkle aktivitetar utan ski. Få med deg ein tur på fjorden, kulturkveld i Undredal, mating av hjort i Lærdal, Villakssenter, Borgund Stavkyrkje, Aurland Skofabrikk in Aurland, Flåmsbana og fjordafari i RIB båt. Bli med på en fjordtur i eit av dei mest populære fjordområda i Noreg. Den smale og spektakulære Nærøyfjorden er omkransa av bratte fjellsider med snødekte toppar som ragar 14oo meter over havet, og med brusande fossefall og idylliske grender langs fjorden. EXPERIENCE FRETHEIM CULTURAL PARK AND BAKKASTOVA Fretheim Cultural Park is a 1600 metres circular trail in natural surroundings, facilitated with histories, viewpoints, benches and seating areas. The park treasure is Bakkastova that offers a rich history and local treats. Take a cup of coffee on your walk, or enjoy it in cozy surroundings. Bakkastova can also be rented for meetings and private parties. The cultural park has an activity area and quiz trail for children and families. TAKE THE ROUTE DOWN THE STEEP AND WINDING STALHEIMSKLEIVA ROAD Experience the magnificent views of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Nærøydalen valley and the drive down the steep and winding road Stalheimskleiva with views towards the waterfalls Sivlefossen and Stalheimsfossen. FLÅMSBANA MUSEET

Flåmsbana er ei spektakulær og verdskjend togreise som byr på noko av det villlaste og mest storslåtte som finst av norsk natur og fjordlandskap. Dette er ei av dei brattastast toglinjene i verda og ”eit must” for besøkande til Flåm. Den 20 kilometer lange togturen startar i Flåm og endar på høgfjellstasjonen Myrdal, 867 meter over havet. Tek du togturen tur-retur må du rekne ca. 2 timar.

Heile året kan du besøka Flåmsbana Muséet og lære meir om Flåmsbana, ei av dei brattaste jernbanestrekningane i Europa og eit eksempel på norsk ingeniørkunst i verdsklasse. Flåmsbana Muséet gir deg innsikt i bygginga av denne jernbanestrekninga, den tekniske utviklinga og menneska bak denne imponerande konstruksjonen. Muséet har og ein butikk med stort utval i souvenirar og logoartiklar frå Flåmsbana. Gratis inngang for alle.

FLÅMSBANA The Flåm Railway is a popular train journey with panoramic view of some of the wildest and most striking examples of Norwegian fjord and mountain landscape. The National Geographic Traveler Magazine has named the Flåm Railway as one of the top 10 train journeys in Europe. It is s one of steepest railway lines in the world on normal tracks with almost 80 % of the distance with a gradient of 5,5%. In less than an hour the train ascends 867 metres from Flåm to Myrdal going through 20 tunnels. Duration of a roundtrip is approx. 2 hours.

THE FLÅM RAILWAY DOCUMENTATION CENTRE Visit the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre and learn more about the exiting history of the Flåm Railway, the technological development and the people behind this unique engineering work. The souvenir shop offers different Flåm Railway logo articles and items as well as other Norwegian handicrafts and souvenirs. Free entrance for everyone.

Ribbåt-safari – sjå mykje på kort tid Dette er ein glimrande måte å oppleva den berømte Nærøyfjorden, som er på UNESCO si verdsarvliste, og mange andre flotte stader langs fjorden. Vi anbefalar å kontakte Fjordsafari som har kontor på kaia i Flåm. Kajakk – små båtar – store inntrykk For deg som ønsker eit meir aktivt og tettare møte med fjorden og fjordlandskapet, er det mogeleg å leiga kajakk av Njord. Njord arrangerar og ulike utflukter med kajakk og guide. Fiske – prøve lykka Det er nokre år (juli månad) lov å fiska laks og sjøørrett i Flåmselva. Hotellet har eigne fiskesoner som kan brukast. Ta kontakt med oss om du har spørsmål om fisking i området. Fjellvandring – Ut på tur aldri sur Aurlandsdalen og Flåmsdalen – to fantastiske flotte dalar like i nærleiken. Gode forbindelsar med buss til/frå for dei som vil oppleva Aurlandsdalen. I Flåmsdalen kan du ta Flåmsbana og gå heile eller delar av Flåmsdalen, i kulturlandskapet langs bygdevegen ned mot Flåm. Sykkelutleige Har du lyst å oppleva Flåmsdalen eller nærområdet på to hjul, er det mogeleg å leiga sykkel i Flåm og på Myrdal stasjon. For meir informasjon og bestilling, ta kontakt med Café Rallaren på Myrdal eller Haugastøl Turistsenter i Flåm. Den kalde årstid – ikkje langt til pudder Vinteren kan og by på mange aktivitetar. Med Flåmsbana kjem ein opp på fjellet til spektakulære langrennsmogelegheiter på Reinunga. Det flotte og moderne skieldoradoet Voss Fjellandsby Myrkdalen er berre 45 minutts køyretur frå Flåm. Vi kan og anbefala vinterfjordsightseeing med båt på Nærøyfjorden. Vinteren er magisk ved fjorden og fjellet. Kulturatraksjonar som museum, kyrkjer og bygdetun finst det fleire i området, der det er mogleg å ta inn over seg kulturen og tradisjonane som me har hatt her i århundre. I tillegg til Aurlandskoen og Stegastein kan men emne: Otternes Bygdetun – ligg i fjellsida rett utanfor Flåm. Det er eit tun med 27 autentiske hus og eit levande gardsmuseum med nydeleg utsikt, tradisjonar og historie. Holo Gardstun – ligg oppover i Flåmsdalen der det er moglegheit for å oppleva mattradisjonar og kulturformidling. Stavkyrkjene i Undredal og Borgund – er opne for besøkjande heile året. Det same er den fantastiske kyrkja i Flåm.

OTHER ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES IN FLÅM

RIB boat SAFARI This is a great way to experience the famous UNESCO listed Nærøyfjord, as well as many other beautiful places along the fiord. For more information please contact Fjordsafari. FISHING Fishing for salmon and sea trout in Flåm River is allowed in July. Fretheim Hotel has its own fishing zones that can be used. Please contact us regarding fishing licenses. HIKING The Aurland Valley and the Flåm Valley are green, lush, beautiful and clean. They are both ideal for hiking and offers unique nature experiences. It is possible to combine the Flåm Railway with walking the entire or parts of the Flåm valley. KAYAKING Sea kayaking on the Sognefjord gives you a closer and more active experience with the fjord and fjord landscape. We suggest you rent your own sea kayak in order to enjoy the beauty of the fjord. BIKE RENTAL If you would like to explore the Flåm Valley or the surrounding areas of Flåm, bike rental is possible in Flåm or at Myrdal station. CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS Cultural attractions, such as museums, churches and farm yards can be found in numbers in the nearby area, and are places to learn about the culture and the traditions that have been here for generations. In addition to the Aurland Shoe factory and Stegastein viewpoint, we can recommend: Otternes Farmyard - located on the mountainside just outside Flåm. A farmyard with 27 authentic houses and a living farm museum with beautiful views, traditions and history. Holo Farmyard - a farm 600 metres above sea level in the Flåm valley, where it is possible to experience the local food traditions and cultural history. The stave churches in Undredal and Borgund are open all year to visitors. In addition, the magnificent church in Flåm (from 1667), is open on request. IN WINTER it is only a short drive from Flåm to the mountain village Voss Fjellandsby Myrkdalen and one of the most snow-reliable ski centres in Norway. Here you will find a lot of snow and perfect conditions for alpine and cross country skiing.
