October 1, 2011 Dear American Southdown Breeders’ Association Member, As in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of the American Southdown Breeders’ Association, this is your official written notice of the annual meeting of this Association. The annual meeting will be held Saturday, November 12th, in the south wing of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, Louisville, Kentucky. The annual banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the annual meeting immediately following. It is our hope that you will be able to attend the meeting and all the events of the North American. Saturday will include the “Stars of Louisville” Sale, the Southdown market lamb show, and the banquet and annual meeting. Sunday will feature the Southdown junior breeding sheep show. Then, Wednesday, November 16th the National Southdown Show will take center stage. If you attend the annual meeting and are a member who has paid dues in the past fiscal year, you are entitled to vote on all election items. If you cannot attend and wish to vote, a proxy may represent you. You may request in writing a proxy, providing the absent member shall after receiving notice of the annual meeting, file 15 days prior to the meeting file said proxy in the office of the Executive Secretary of the Association.

President’s Message I hope that this new publication the Louisville Preview helps get everyone ready for all the Southdown events in Louisville. The National Board felt that we would try this new format to combine news from the Association with your official notification of our annual meeting and the “Stars of Louisville” catalog. Hopefully, everyone has had a great summer and your Southdowns are doing well. Our family has been to three state fairs and all have been outstanding shows. The only thing better than the quality of the Southdown sheep at the shows has been the people that show them. I was happy to make it up the National Sale in New England. There were really good consignments and the sale went very well. I couldn’t stay for our National Junior Show, but from all reports it was a barn burner of a show. The All-American Junior show, held a week earlier, was equally outstanding. It was a great loss to our Southdown family with the passing of Trace Repasky. Trace will be missed for her love of our breed and the special love for our junior members. The programs she helped start, and the improvements she helped make in our junior association will forever be remembered. The gift to the Junior Southdown Association from her estate will help our Juniors for decades to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jeff and the rest of Trace’s family. To me, the excitement of getting ready to go to NAILE is like the anticipation at Christmas with all the presents under the tree. If you haven’t been in a while or not at all, I hope you will look at joining us this year. You will be glad you did. I cannot tell you all how much I hope to see you and talk Southdowns at Louisville. See you down the road.

The ASBA’s Newest Sculpture The Association has been fortunate to work with artist, Carol Herden, of Minnesota, for a number of years now. Over this time she has sculpted the ideal ram, ewe, and market lamb, plus a ewe with twin lambs. All have been well received by those who love Southdowns. This time Carol has sculpted a work that is different from all previous sculptures and is sure to be enjoyed for years to come. The work entitled “Bright Beginning” depicts a young boy feeding twin Southdowns, much to the interest of the barn cat! The #1 sculpture will be auctioned off in Louisville, but others are for sale now through the ASBA office at the cost of $150.00. The young boy’s shirt and the cat are different colors on different sculptures, so no two are exactly the same. Please call early if you wish to reserve a certain numbered sculpture.
Southdown Afghan Who says Southdowns are just for meat? This baby afghan proves otherwise because it is made with 100% Southdown wool! The afghan was hand spun, knitted and crocheted by Sue Ann Carpenter of Barryton, MI. It is approximately 35x39 inches and has a stars knitted pattern. Sue Ann has donated this beautiful blanket, with the proceeds going to the Junior Association. The afghan will be auctioned off at the Southdown Banquet in Louisville. 2011 Summer Meeting Notes The summer meeting of the Board of Directors of the American Southdown Breeders’ Association was held July 8th, 2011, in the board room of the Brooks Building at the Eastern States Exposition Center, Springfield, Massachusetts. President L.C. Scramlin called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m. with the following directors present: Scott Flanagan, Marty Gibbs, Jeff Repasky, Barbara Bishop, Amy Williams, Kyle Thayer, and Jessica Miniter. Also joining the meeting by conference call was Gary Kwisnek. It was moved by Marty Gibbs and seconded by Jeff Repasky to approve the minutes as previously submitted. The Executive Secretary then discussed the income and expenses for the Association ending with the 3rd quarter of the fiscal year. Concern was expressed about the current year’s registry numbers. After discussion, it was moved by Gary Kwisnek to run a special program for our breeders that could encourage the registration of their lambs. The program would begin on July 15th and run until September 30th. For every 5 sheep registered they would received one chance to win one of the following: a) the new Southdown sculpture, b) a free christening or c) annual dues paid for next year. All registrations would cost $5.00 regardless of age of sheep. The drawing will be held at the annual meeting and banquet in Louisville, with only one winner per farm or family allowed. Those that have already registered the bulk of their lambs, need to register just one or more Southdown to be entered in a drawing for a free business card ad in the 2012 Journal/Directory. Amy Jones of the Electronic Communications/Social Media committee joined the meeting via conference call and presented her committee’s recommendations. The committee proposed two ideas to the Board. The first was the development of a personal information policy for the Association and its members. The second was the website site update with a two-phase plan. It was noted the cost of the first phase would be $2,000 and the second phase would be $1,000. This would result in the rebuilding of the website and hiring a company to rebuild and maintain the site. After discussion on the two ideas, it was moved by Gary Kwisnek to proceed with phase 1 of the website update for an approximate cost of $2,000. Seconded by Barbara Bishop. Motion carried. President Scramlin then summarized the actions concerning the two rams that were found to be carriers of the spider gene after the National Show and junior show in Louisville. He proposed that the Board form a committee to review

This committee will make their recommendations to the Board at the informal meeting in Louisville this coming November. After discussing the current show policy, Kyle Thayer moved to award the 2010 premier exhibitor award at the National Show to the exhibitor with highest point total after corrections had been calculated, to move up the Reserve Champion ram to Champion ram for 2010, and to adjust any other awards affected by that particular ram. Seconded by Gary Kwisnek. Motion passed. The Executive Secretary was asked to write a letter to a family in Pennsylvania concerning their use of a possible carrier ram. It was moved by Marty Gibbs to have a committee look at all the policies and procedures of the “Spider� (NS) policy for shows and sales. Seconded by Jeff Repasky. Motion passed. Scott Flanagan reported on the hairy lamb issue that his committee has been investigating. He noted that samples tested for border disease and a lamb tested for hyperthyroid had both came back negative. No direct or genetic link had been found yet from the 12-15 samples sent this year. He noted Dr. Beever would like to have blood drawn from a control group of Southdowns that had shown no prior issues with hairy lambs. He would like to have 20 samples from this control group for comparison purposes. Kyle Thayer reported the National Sale had 40 head entered and the National Junior Show had 170 entries. We all anticipate a good weekend. Jessica Miniter reported on the excellent Southdown show at the All-American show. Southdowns were the largest breed as per number of entries, and photos of champions had been posted on facebook during the event. It was noted that members of the Youth Leadership and Youth Development committees would meet during the weekend and develop plans for the remainder of the year. The board members noted the Louisville update had been excellent and the Journal/Directory had been well received. It was moved by Gary Kwisnek to publish a Journal/Directory again in 2012. Seconded by Kyle Thayer. Motion passed. It was noted by L.C. Scramlin that the Ewes for Youth committee has two ewes donated for the program this year. 2011 Summer Meeting Notes Continued The president then called for new business. L.C. stated he would contact Dusty Oldenburg concerning the status of the quilt project for the Association. Then, the designation of the Ohio Sale as the 2012 National Sale and the 1% issue from the 2011 Ohio Sale were discussed. After debate on the issue, it was moved by Marty Gibbs that the executive committee write a letter to the Ohio Sale. The Association may then pull their National Sale designation if necessary. He also moved to consult with legal consul about recovering the 1% fee due. Seconded by Kyle Thayer. Motion passed. Gary Kwisnek moved to designate the 2012 All-American show as the National Junior Show for the breed. A second was given by Amy Williams, and the motion passed. Gary Kwisnek next moved to have the informal meeting of the Association at the NAILE late in the afternoon or early in the evening on Friday, November 11th. The annual meeting will follow on Saturday evening, November 12th, 2011. Seconded by Kyle Thayer. Motion carried. The issue of online sales and futurity nominations were then discussed. After much conversation, it was moved by Barbara Bishop and seconded by Jeff Repasky to have a committee draw up a policy for online sales and futurity nominations. A possible fall publication that would come out at least 30 days prior to the annual meeting with notice of such, containing the Stars catalog, and at no expense to the Association was discussed. This idea was well received by the Board and will be further explored. Jeff Repasky noted that the Association would be receiving funds from the life insurance policy of Tracy Repasky to be used for youth activities. President Scramlin voiced the sincere sympathy of the Board and the Association for the loss of Trace. With no further business to conduct, the meeting to adjourn was moved by Kyle Thayer and seconded by Barbara Bishop at 3:30 p.m. Motion carried and the meeting was adjourned. Every year there are individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty for the betterment of the Southdown breed. • Do they show exemplary service to the breed? • Candidates must be twenty-two years and older. • Southdown Spirit of the Breed winner will be announced at the annual ASBA Banquet in November each year. • A candidate may only win the Southdown Spirit of the Breed Award once. • Winners will receive a plaque the following year at the announcement of the new winner, upon return of undamaged trophy.
