From the Editor

What an adventure it has been to be the Editor of the first American Southdown Journal & Directory! It is a honor to create a publication for an organization that is so near to my heart. I would like to thank everyone on the Journal Committee and Gary for all the help along the way. I would also like to thank my assistance editors (my family) for all of their help providing feedback and proofing. Even though this publication took a lot of time to put together it didn’t seem much like work at all because I was able to work with such an amazing set of individuals. I hope you enjoy the Journal & Directory. If you advertised this year, thank you, and if not we hope you decide to next year. President’s Message I hope that everyone has had a great lambing season and is looking forward to a new Southdown year. 2010 was a real milestone year for the Scramlin family. It marked the 300th anniversary of Scramlins here in America. In addition, we celebrated the Centennial of our family farm with an open house with more than 500 relatives and friends in August. The year was topped off by being elected president of the American Southdown Breeders Association Board of Directors. The old saying “it doesn’t get any better” is the only way to describe it. I was only in office about 10 days when the issue with NS sheep at North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) surfaced. That definitely made my job a lot harder. Sure, it was not the easiest way to get started, but all of the people involved with the problem were very up front and helpful. What could have been really hard and hurtful to the Southdown breed was made easier by the breeders involved. Yes, we have problems in our breed, but by facing these problems head on and out in the open it makes us stronger as a breed.

The board has put several changes in place for 2011. We hope this new Southdown Journal & Directory will serve as your full-service Southdown booklet for everything you need. You can now register your Southdowns online. The e-letter will be used more this year and our Social Media Committee is working hard to improve our website.

The hairy lamb research is still ongoing. I know that it is taking a while to get answers to this problem. Unfortunately we have found that there are no quick fixes and that there are 64,000 genes that DON’T match between the different hairy lambs. We will not give up and we will keep up the fight to get the best answer to this problem.

The National Jr. Show and National Sale in New England is off and running. As some who attended the All American when it was at New England know, it will be a great show. It is exciting to see youth showing Southdowns in record numbers as we saw last year and I am sure 2011 will be even better. The board has added a fall ewe lamb futurity and took the entry fee off our yearling ewe futurity. I keep telling people my only fear with our youth is that the way Southdown exhibitors dominate showmanship classes, skills contests, and judging contests at national events, we may have to have our own contests to be fair with the other breeds. I say this in jest of course, but the youth that are involved in our breed are truly the envy of the industry. One last thought before I go. Each year at NAILE as the junior Southdown wethers show, I look around ringside, to see almost every exhibitor who will show later in the week in the breeding classes watching lambs that they sold or bred in the ring. No other breed has this going for them. Let’s make sure we don’t take this for granted. I sure hope that if anyone has questions or suggestions for our breed, please contact me. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones this year. Hope you see you down the road,

L.C. Scramlin

4 THE AMERICAN SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL & DIRECTORY 2011

Secretary’s Column Southdowns have been a part of the American sheep industry since its beginning. As history records, Southdowns were imported in early colonial settlements; they were used as a sire breed in the “hot house” lamb markets for many years; they were popular in many farm flocks across America, and Southdowns were the breed of choice as the 4-H club lamb market was developed in the Southwest. The early introduction of Southdowns into America and the leadership of many outstanding stockmen led to the organization of the American Southdown Breeders’ Association in 1882. As the oldest purebred livestock organization in America, this breed has seen popular times and times of less interest. However, in studying registration numbers of the past twenty years, one will see this breed to be the healthiest and strongest purebred breed of sheep in American today. Southdowns, developed in the chalky hills of Southern England, have truly stood the test of centuries of agricultural use here in America. The generations of stockmen that saw the quality and value of this breed, so many years ago, are today followed by a generation of breeders who still see the value in this breed. With the emphasis in selection of supreme champions at so many breeding shows across America, Southdowns have risen to the top as the breed most often selected. The conformation and quality of the breed, so well presented in a slick sheared package, does not go unnoticed by judges from coast to coast.

We hope you enjoy receiving the Southdown Journal & Directory. To ensure you continue to receive the Journal & Directory, please take a few minutes and send your annual dues of $20 or your youth dues of $10 per junior. This will guarantee you receive the next issue and your dues will be paid for your registry work! Please send to, ASBA, 100 Cornerstone, Fredonia, TX, 76842.

When studying sale averages at the major consignment sales across America, again one will see that Southdowns are the breed of choice by many wanting to become part of the sheep industry. The moderate size of Southdown ewes, along with the quiet disposition of the breed, are all reasons for the breeds popularity at sales. Then, when adding in Southdown rams, that are fertile and aggressive and produce a high quality lean market lamb with minimal amounts of feed, one can see why Southdown rams will work on ewes of like kind or ewes of any breed. If you are a veteran Southdown breeder, we hope you enjoy this issue of the Southdown Journal and Directory. In it you should find all the information you need to navigate through the year with your flock. The American Southdown Breeders’ Association is youth oriented and you will see much in this issue that pertains to youth. Some information that is more time sensitive, will be on the website at www.southdownsheep.org , will be available on the ASBA facebook page, or will be sent out in the Association E-letter.

If you are thinking about becoming part of the Southdown breed, we invite you to attend one of our shows or sales across the country or visit with our breeders. You will not find a better group of stockmen in any breed. Again, this generation of Southdown breeders who have seen the value in today’s Southdowns would like to share this with you. If you have any questions about the Association or this breed, do not hesitate to call the Association office at 325-429-6226 or email the office at southdown@ctesc.net . We are here to serve the membership in every way possible.

Pot O’Gold Futurity Point Rules Ewe lambs nominated to participate in the Futurity at designated sales in the previous year plus ewe lambs purchased at the Stars of Louisville sale now compete as yearlings. The nomination is automatic and the Junior is qualified the following year if a futurity ewe lamb was purchased. Yearlings may collect points from January 1 until the Junior Show at the NAILE. New in 2011 is a Fall Ewe Lamb Futurity. See below for additional details. Cash award placings are paid from 1st to 20th in the ewe lamb Futurity. The $25 nomination fee for ewe lambs will be jackpotted and the yearling are competing for the right to hold the traveling trophy for a year. Purchase Futurity Ewe Lambs at These Designated Sales: Illini All Breeds Sale - Oklahoma Black and White Sale - Ohio Southdown Classic Sale - Keystone Stud Ram & Ewe Sale National Cornbelt Sale - Eastern Stud Ram Sale - Midwest Stud Ram Sale - National Southdown Sale - New England Sale - Nuggett All-American Sale - Wisconsin Southdown Symposium Consignor Rules for Ewe Lambs: Nomination fee is $25.00 payable to the American Southdown Breeders’ Assn. Ewe lambs must be nominated and designated prior to entering the show ring. Futurity ewe lambs must be entered and sell at auction of a designated sale and not be pre-sold. Lambs are guaranteed to hold lambs teeth for 12 months from birth date. Failure to do so will give junior right to reimbursement of price paid plus a hearing for other provable harm before any dispute resolution board identified in the Association constitution. Exhibitor Rules for Ewe Lambs: A junior is an exhibitor who is not more than 21 on January 1. There is no lower age limit, but the junior must be physically capable of showing their own sheep (handicap is excepted). Junior members must physically show their Futurity lamb to qualify for points at each show. If there are two Futurity lambs in the same class, the junior must exhibit one and another junior member may exhibitor the second lamb. Ewe lambs are eligible to compete in one of the two ewe lamb Futuritys. Fall ewe lambs are those born September 1 - December 31, 2011. Spring ewe lambs are those born after January 1. Ewe lambs are to be registered in the individual junior name only. No partnerships, farm, family, 4-H Club or FFA Chapter names accepted. The purchasing junior can not be an immediate family member of the breeder or employee of the breeder as listed on the ewe’s registration paper. Immediate family members would be described as any first generation child, grandchild, sister, brother, niece or nephew. Ewe lambs and points earned in the Futurity are not transferable to any other person, nor are points transferable from one lamb to another. Any Futurity entrant may compete with as many lambs as desired, but will receive premium for the ewe lamb with the highest point total. Each junior may win only one top twenty award and one district award. Ewe lamb must be shown in her proper age class. If registration papers are not received by the first show, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility to show the lamb in the proper age category. Premiums: All nomination fees will be jackpotted and paid down 20 places. Lambs will be nominated for Futurity purposes at the sale after purchase. Lambs must have their scrapie ID number recorded by a Futurity Committee Member or they are ineligible for the Futurity. A point card must be filled out for each show and forwarded to the Association office within 14 days of the show. The card must be signed by the superintendent of the appropriate show certifying that the junior exhibited the lamb, class size, and the placing of the lamb. At each individual show the ewe lamb may earn Futurity points from either the open division or junior division, but not both, except at the North American (N.A.I.L.E.) where only junior show placings will be counted. Ewe lambs can compete at an unlimited number of shows with only the top five (5) point award shows being recorded as the Futurity point total. No designated show will be before the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. Futurity awards will be announced following the Junior Show at the 2004 North American International Livestock Exposition. Lambs that are not nominated by the junior purchaser on the day of the sale will become ineligible for the Futurity. Yearling Ewe Futurity Rules: The yearling ewes eligible to participate were purchased the previous November at the Stars of Louisville sale, at a fall regional Southdown sale that agrees to pay 1% gross Southdown sale commission to the Association or tattooed and eligible to participate as ewe lambs for the previous years futurity contest. Yearling’s purchased in the name of an older sibling, that because of employment or advanced education is unable to show at fairs, may be transferred to the name of a younger sibling, but this applies to the entire show season, not individual shows. Except 7, 8 & 9, all above ewe lamb futurity rules apply to the yearling ewe futurity. A traveling trophy will be presented to the winner. All shows from January 1 thru Louisville Junior show will become eligible for yearling ewe futurity point accumulation. This is intended to reward junior exhibitors that have success in the mid winter shows, such as Texas and Pennsylvania. southdownsheep.org 51
