UNITED WAY OF NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA 2017-18 Annual Report & Donor Recognition

MESSAGE FROM YOUR UNITED WAY LEADERSHIP It has been another year in the books for United Way of North Central Florida and our impact is greater than ever. Through our Community Investment Fund, Community Investment Council volunteers have continued to fund 34 programs operated by 26 local Community Impact Partner agencies. These programs are focused on fighting for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community. Additionally, these programs focus on providing immediate needs, such as emergency food and shelter, to community members who face the most dire circumstances. As we rounded out the second year of a three-year grant cycle, we continued utilizing the Results-Based Accountability (RBA) framework to evaluate and support Community Impact programs, holding quarterly Turn the Curve meetings that facilitate collaboration and increase collective impact.

At the beginning of this fiscal year, United Way of North Central Florida became the lead agency for the North Central Florida Alliance for the Homeless and Hungry (Alliance), the local Continuum of Care (CoC). The Alliance is one of United Way’s partnership initiatives to help create additional lasting change in our community. Lots of preparation went into this new partnership at the end of the last fiscal year and we are happy to report that everything is running smoothly. Looking to the future, we hope to increase our impact in our rural communities, expanding Community Impact Partners, workplace campaigns and Small Business Partners into those regions. We are also working on increasing our overall digital communications for community impact and development. Thank you for your support this year and for continuing to LIVE UNITED!

Our Small Business Partnership program has also been thriving with more than 100 members, and with the addition of the Premium Small Business Partners, who donated $2,400 each annually, we have been able to help supplement some changes in the workplace campaign landscape. We also continued with our successful United Way Express bus tours, sponsored by Candies Motorcoaches, and had the opportunity to take even more donors, potential donors and United Way staff members to visit our grant-funded programs in action. We were also recognized by the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) for our work on United Way Express with an Award of Distinction at their annual Golden Image Awards celebration. Our internal direct-service programs, ReadingPals and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) have also been flourishing. In response to student interest, ReadingPals developed the ReadingPals Junior program for fifth-grade students who aged out of ReadingPals to read with younger students at Girls Place. Furthermore, VITA had a recordbreaking year, with 2,177 tax returns filed, more than any other year! In addition, 2-1-1, our 24/7 information and referral helpline, received more than 14,000 calls for housing, utility assistance and other needs throughout the year.

STORIES UNITED Whether you are a child receiving food to take home on the weekends or a mother rebuilding her life after leaving an abusive relationship, we all have a story. Some of them require the help of others to write a better ending. Together, we can keep doing, keep giving and keep our promise to Live United. Everyone has a story to tell and these are just a few of the many stories that unite us.

Immediate Needs Program CDS Family & Behavioral Health Services - Interface Youth Shelter Kevin’s* relationship with his mom was strained, so she brought him to the Interface shelter. When he arrived Kevin was very distant and minimally compliant with counseling. Kevin felt his mother had abandoned him by bringing him to Interface. In the first two weeks, he tried to sabotage any progress he made. In the third week, he started to open up and discuss the way his family communicates, solves problems and supports one another. Kevin even became an achiever, the highest status a youth can obtain at Interface. He and his mother participated in individual and family sessions that focused on anger management, communication and allowing cool down periods when things escalate at home. Kevin continues to show improvement.

Health Program Catholic Charities Weekend Hunger Backpack Tim* is a student in the program who receives a backpack filled with food every Friday. One week, Tim and another student accidentally switched backpacks. When Tim returned his bag after the weekend, we realized that he had the other student’s backpack. Unfortunately, the other student often delayed returning his backpack, so Tim was not able to get a backpack the following week. When our team explained to Tim that he wouldn’t be receiving a backpack, he was upset. He cried the entire way to the bus loop that Friday. Ever since that day, he asks for his backpack every single week to make sure he will be getting it. Getting a backpack every Friday is the highlight of his week. He talks about how much he loves getting his backpack and how he looks forward to it every week. This student is truly impacted by the program.

When Emily* moved to Arbor House, she was pregnant and attempting to regain custody of her one-year-old son. During her time at Arbor House she worked hard, completing a case plan with DCF and graduating from a substance abuse inpatient program at Meridian. She also worked full time as a waitress until she gave birth to her second son. By utilizing the resources provided to her by Arbor House staff, Emily was able to get her children set up with childcare, as well as clothing and other supplies needed to care for both children. With the money that she saved from donations and the extreme low cost of rent at Arbor House, she was able to move her family into a stable and safe home.

Financial Stability Program St. Francis House - Arbor House

Bobby* started the AIM program midway through the school year, when he transferred schools. Although he was a high-performing student at his old school, when he transferred, Bobby was placed in remedial math and reading. The AIM staff noticed this discrepancy. Upon speaking with Bobby, they found that he tried to advocate for himself, but was ignored and had become frustrated. AIM’s team attempted to contact the school, but received no response. Finally, with the help of a school board member and the principal, Bobby was finally moved to the proper classes. However, by this time, he was behind. AIM’s staff worked with the teacher and Bobby to develop a plan to help him catch up, and provided him with a tutor. After his first week of class, he received an A on a test and has since continued to maintain an A average. As a result of AIM’s efforts, Bobby continues on a college-readiness pathway.

Education Program GACTA - Aces In Motion (AIM) *Names in these stories have been changed.
