Newsroom ManagEment JOUR 3708 Meeting Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 18:00-19:00 in Room Azabu 506 Instructor's Welcome Blog Post Welcome to the class blog for JOUR 3708: Newsroom Management. I will use this blog to link to additional readings and resources on the web related to our class. I intend to post here regularly and expect you keep up to date on information posted here. I highly recommend subscribing to this blog and those of your classmates through an RSS reader such as Google Reader (details about subscribing to blogs will be provided after you’ve set up your new gmail account). During this course we will look briefly at the history of the journalism industry. We will pay close attention to how the industry has undergone dramatic changes as more and more people go online to look for their news. As this is the first time for me to teach this course, I will be learning along the way too. I’m very excited about the journey before us and look forward to challenging and interesting semester. I’d like each of you to take a few moments to complete the following survey. It will help me to get a sense of your background journalism knowledge and experience.

Well I finally found the link I was looking for at our last class meeting. The Chronicling America Project from the Library of Congress has a vast and rich selection of old newpapers in online format. I would like everyone to spend some time navigating through the archives. If you’re like me, it shouldn’t take too long to find something interesting. The only problem is that once I get started in a place like this it becomes difficult to get out quickly. As for the picture of the dude with the mustache, I found it on the front page of the January 14, 1912 edition of the Bisbee Daily Review (in Arizona). I was drawn to the artwork and didn’t take time to read the article. But in thinking about it now, an idea occurs. It looks like 100 years ago there was an election for the U.S. President. Maybe I can track coverage of one particular candidate from 100 years ago and compare it to the coverage of a candidate in the current election. I think I’d like to do this for the first project. Anybody wanna work on it together? I wish I’d have had a chance to do something like this whent

Page 2 This is just a test to see how the second page looks in Issuu. In preparing for this course, I’ve come across several interesting web and mobile based news platforms. One of my hopes for this semester is to learn more about how to publish among some of the these platforms. I imagine like me, most of you don’t have direct experience with producing content for these platforms. One of my plans for this class is for all of us to learn how create documents for such environments. Issuu is one such service that looks like a good place to begin for our first assignments and projects. It presents documents in both newspaper and magazine formats. Please take some time to explore the site. Go ahead and set up an account and subscribe some stuff that looks interesting. One student paper I’ve subscribe to is The Miscellany News from Vasser College in New York state. I think we could produce something along these lines but on a much smaller scale in this class. What do you guys think. Feel free to respond in the comments section of the blog.
