PERFORMANCE NOTES

This quadruple canon consists of 4 three-part canons, they can all be performed at the same time, in various ways.

A performance suggestion:

1) The basses start their canon and as soon as it has run into 3 parts, you could add the alto canon, so the piece will now be in 6 parts

2) Stop the basses and let us hear the alto canon alone

3) Add the tenor canon to the alto canon, we are again in 6 parts.

4) stop the altos, and let the basses come in again accompanying the tenors.

5) add the alto canon

6) add the soprano canon, and we are now in 12 parts

7) work all of it up to a climax, and proceed to the last bar in all voices, which will make a satisfying end.

Any other combination is of course possible, and especially the grander planning can be different with every single performance. All this is best done during a performance where the conductor can vary the order of the canons and the dynamic progression.
