THE CITY IS WILDER THAN YOU THINK... Pavilion Entrance | P01 Robert Montgomery Presented by the SCOPE Foundation

Robert Montgomery delves into our collective unconscious with his melancholic The City is Wilder Than You Think, 2012. This new large, site-specific text work engages dialogue with passers-by in a similar way to Montgomery’s billboard work which uses the Situationist concept of detournement; hijacking advertising space in the city, and replacing the advertising with poetry. His work is often political and he has been embraced by both the antiwar movement and Occupy movement, but the themes of this piece are more universal, “a love poem to the city”. This is a major new work from his Recycled Sunlight Series, designed to run on solar power and change with the weather. Robert Montgomery is one of the most talked about new artists in London. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art where, while still a student, he initiated the Aerial Project, a landmark exhibition funded by the Scottish Arts Council, opening the streets of Edinburgh to contemporary artists. He has been a core Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and his work is in the museum’s permanent collection. He has exhibited at Transmission Gallery in Glasgow, The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the BALTIC in Newcastle and the Orientale* show at the most recent Venice Biennale. Montgomery’s work is represented by Galerie Nuke in Paris and Galerie Analix-Forever in Geneva. This is his first installation of his work to be presented in New York.
