a Sustainable Future:

The Global Ecovillage Network Grows into a Movement.

The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) is coming of age: 18 years ago, in 1995, GEN was founded through the concerted efforts of a group of visionaries at a conference in Findhorn, then already a well-known centre for sustainable living in Northern Scotland. GEN was created in order to make visible efforts happening simultaneously and unknowingly in parallel all over the world: people taking the future of their communities, villages and neighbourhoods into their own hands. People initiating, reknitting and strengthening their communities in such a way that they may fulfil their potential of becoming caretakers of the ecosystems of which they are a part and guardians of the other species with which they coexist. In times of

climate change and a global protest movement against social injustice, the ecovillage movement is gaining momentum, providing a viable alternative to existing globalized inhumane structures, exploring decentralized solutions at a community level, and connecting traditional and contemporary knowledge for a peaceful and sustainable future. GEN has become an organization capable of linking grass-roots projects with social movements, other global actors, and governments. With the support and assistance of GEN, the ecovillages of the world have developed from being a network to a movement that generates hope on a global level.

A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Ecovillages are rural or urban, intentional or traditional communities with vibrant social structures, vastly diverse, yet united in their actions towards low-impact, high-quality lifestyles. Fundamentally, an eco-village is a human-scale settlement consciously designed through participatory processes to secure long-term sustainability, integrating four dimensions of sustainability: ecology, economy, the social and the cultural. Today, ecovillages are gaining global recognition for the innovative and practical tools they offer to tackle simultaneously the many social, environmental, cultural and economic challenges we face. They are precious playgrounds for civil society engagement, and village networks can weave local solutions into a new tapestry for resilient societies. This is, among other reasons, a result of GEN´s never tiring efforts. The testimonies from three continents show how diverse and serious are the wishes and motivations to create ecovillages - and how they still are connected to one movement: Nancy Oppelle from Kenya: "Nobody in our community is hungry anymore, not even at the end of the dry season. Our children are healthy, because they get a rich diet. And for the money we used to spend on fertilizers, we can buy their school books." Nancy and 40 other women of her village have learnt sustainable techniques, such as Permaculture and baking bread from sweet potatoes, from GEN ambassador Philip Munyasia.

Michael Hale from Canada: "We planned our community together. That doesn’t happen much in mainstream communities. The children playing also marks a difference. While you see children playing in cities, towns and suburbs, there are distinctive differences in an ecovillage: the constancy of the group, the quality of the play, the fact that kids want to be outside all day when the weather is fine." Michael is a member of the Yarrow ecovillage, a GEN member in British Columbia.

Anna Fillipou from Greece: "Two or three years ago we could not expect how fast this system would collapse. All kind of securities - money, education, health, work, consumption have fallen apart. Most people have lost confidence in the system. Many young people have become exhausted in protesting. This is the time for alternatives! It is amazing how many people now are interested in ecovillages."

Anna is a co-founder of an ecovillage initiative close to Thessaloniki that is receiving growing interest - just like ecovillages in other crisis-stricken countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italy. Food sovereignty, a safe environment for the children, alternatives in times of crisis - these are three major reasons why people choose live in or learn from ecovillages, and to become involved in GEN.

Kosha Joubert, president of GEN international: "I coined the term luxurious simplicity to describe the lifestyle I chose when I first moved into an ecovillage. As a mother of two young children, what could be more luxurious than living in a community - a safe and supportive environment for them? Eating food that comes straight from our own gardens; knowing where our water comes from and how our electricity is being generated; understanding the wholesome materials that make up the houses we live in, and the medicines we administer to those of us in need; having friends and community around with whom to share solidarity and our inquiry into life: what could be more precious? If at the same time, we are cutting our ecological footprint to one third of the German average (true for the case of the Sieben Linden Ecovillage in Germany) or to a half of the UK average (true for the case of Findhorn Ecovillage, where I live now), all the better!"

Robert Hall, longtime member of the GEN council, stated: "With GEN we could create a highly sophisticated organizational structure, which is respected by co-operation partners on many levels, providing a platform for collaboration, fundraising and knowledge transfer at global and grassroots levels." Currently, within GEN, the Global South is thriving: the Ecovillage Network of South America (CASA) and the Ecovillage Network of Africa (GEN-Africa) have strongly emerged in the past years to join the other three broad regional organisations that GEN-International works through: the Ecovillage Network of Oceania and Asia (GENOA), the Ecovillage Network of the English and French speaking Americas (ENA), and the Ecovillage Network of Europe (GEN-Europe). While the communities in the North tend to focus on a scaling down of ecological footprints, in the South the question may be more of a need to ‘scale up’ in order to meet basic needs. Many participants of the GEN conference this year stated that the most heartwarming experience of being in GEN is the connection with ecovillages and projects from the Global South. Testimonies of Congolese and Colombian experiences and success stories from Thailand and Cambodia are most convincing and have an healing effect on the global legacy of colonialism and slavery.

Within GEN, traditional villages from the Global South find direct partners in industrialized countries that are neither patronizing nor leading them even more into dependency and globalized destruction, but share the same vision and, to a certain extent, the same lifestyle. Even in the most despairing situations, people are coming together, connecting with the land on which they live, connecting with each other, and creating alternatives and ways to sustain the Earth and each other.

"For me, GEN is the UN of the communities", says Charly Ehrenpreis, co-founder of Tamera and participant of the last GEN conference in Switzerland. "It is our extended family, it is the community of the communities."

Caring for each other, caring for the land, healing the wounds of violence and exploitation, empowering women, and learning techniques to provide food, water and energy - this is the work that many initiatives on the ground are doing. The connection to the Global Ecovillage Network gives the stability of belonging to a planetary movement that does not only talk, but really explores an overall alternative. This is the foundation for a promising connection on both sides. To this end, the first GEN International summit will take place in December 2014 in Dakar, Senegal. Looking on the achievements of GEN in the recent years it becomes apparent that the network is growing on every level. New ecovillages seem to be seeding everywhere and existing ones are growing in membership. New regional networks are forming, and more education and training initiatives are taking place. In the European Union, Africa, and Latin America, national governments are showing interest in ecovillage strategies for sustainable development. Governments are understanding that for a true transition to the resilience of societies, they need to work hand in hand with civil society actors and organizations. In the concept of ecovillage strategies for the transition of traditional villages and urban neighbourhoods to ecovillages, bottom-up and top-down approaches can combine to become a truly powerful formula for change. For example, the government in Senegal, Africa - inspired by a network of forty-five already existing ecovillages - has decided to support every second traditional village of the country (14 000 in total), with the skills and means to become ecovillages. GEN will assist in this process at all levels of development.

To this end, the first GEN International summit will take place in December 2014 in Dakar, Senegal.

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

One of the fastest growing initiatives of GEN is its educational program, with courses such as the Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) running in over 35 countries and on all continents, with the encouragement and promotion of local trainers at its core. The EDE is a 4-week training that empowers communities to determine and consciously design their own course towards a sustainable future. The curriculum has been recognised and endorsed as setting a standard for the United Nations’ ‘Decade of Education for Sustainable Development – 2005-2014’. The EDE is universal in scope but local in application, directed towards honouring and drawing out valuable cultural diversity. Rather than losing valuable local knowledge in the process of ‘modernisation’, the aim is to honour and preserve local wisdom and sustainable traditions, while creatively merging these with innovative technologies, wherever appropriate. The participants in EDU courses don´t just learn skills - they form community, find empowerment, create projects and start-up initiatives. Just recently, the first Women's EDE took place in South Africa and, like many EDE courses, a new initiative was born: 'River of Life' - to inspire and empower women throughout the world to start projects for sustainability.

During the last years, education tools have been complemented by various online tools, helping to build a network of integrity between the

ecovillages, related movements and those who are looking for answers and solutions, the most recent example being the Solution Library. With the help of six brilliant young women from the Islamic world (from Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Turkey and Palestine), support from partners in Egypt (CultNat and the Bibliotheca Alexandria), and financial support from the Anne Lindh Foundation, GEN developed this online access portal to sustainable solutions that began with a first collection of 80 examples. The Solution Library of appropriate technologies will be further developed and collaboratively filled by many to replicate best practices in resilience and sustainability. (http://solution.ecovillage.org) As the last GEN conference showed, the young generation of the ecovillages have created a very vital platform to connect and co-operate together: NextGEN. The presence and commitment of this highly motivated and educated younger generation were overwhelmingly inspiring. Presentations of projects from, and for, young people from Brazil, Canada, USA, Thailand, Zimbabwe and other countries, showed the richness and purity of this youthful network: young people who easily see themselves as a planetary family, ready to help each other and the world. While NextGEN has been growing for some years, there is a new sub-group of GEN that was birthed at the conference. GEN Elders is a new network of older people in ecovillages who wish to connect, contribute their experiences, and organize a way of coming together and raising their voices in solidarity with GEN.

These materials will be delivered in a way that will put emphasis on underlying interrelationships, interdependencies and continuities, while at the same time highlighting key evolutionary milestones in the organization of energy and matter, living systems and society The third cluster will involve “out of the box” experiences designed to stimulate creativity, appreciation of change processes, enhancement of leadership qualities and the connection of outer experience with inner development and integrity. The fourth cluster, in turn, will involve group assignments where key sustainability-related topics will be researched, synthesized and presented by interdisciplinary student teams to their peers Together, the components of the program will prepare students to engage their respective disciplines with a more holistic view of the world. The Lab is now working towards a pilot of the program, to launch at EARTH University in Limon, Costa Rica in the summer of 2014.

Now

future

The community of the future is here already, it takes many forms and many materials and tools are available to build such a community in a state-of-the-art format. Here in Norway we are intent on integrating many of these elements for the first time at the Solem community about an hour North of Trondheim by car. When it comes to our housing needs there are no potential solutions off the table but we certainly expect to be able to put together straw bale houses with 10 people in under 10 days. There is nothing of particular note about that actually - however our houses will be coated with a mixture of naturally occurring magnesium oxide, clay, ash and animal dung. The result will be a 'geopolymer' many times stronger than steel, radiation proof, paramagnetic (countering EMF), positive for the environment and a highly beneficial for the people living within it.

By Mike Upston The picture may seem futuristic to some but the solutions described in this article all exist, strangely no-one seems to have put them all together in

one place... yet.

MgO, its chemical formula, forms a single crystalline structure within an hour or so of mixing, so it makes the perfect multi-pour product for building and the crystal structure it forms means it offers particularly intriguing options for anyone wishing to live in a house employing sacred geometry. MgO can be used on roads as well as houses, a particular issue here as concrete and tarmac roads need regular rebuilding after the harsh winter and subsequent thaw. MgO is far superior to cement in pretty much every way, so much so that China will be banning concrete this year in favour of this material which was used to build their temples and even the Great Wall of Photo by Severin.stalder/CC 3.0

China, thousands of years ago. When restoring their temples 2-3,000 years old, it was discovered that the wood and straw cellulitic material was in perfect condition underneath. The low cost, fast build characteristics and extreme longevity mean it's pretty hard to beat as a value for money building material.

MgO can be manufactured from the commonly occurring magnesite mineral, or from seawater and the production process uses a fraction of the energy of cement – as a natural material it

does not give off harmful gasses if exposed to water, unlike concrete and is non-polluting for the planet, in fact it is even used as a natural plant supplement. It's only one of a class of materials known as geopolymers, which form such perfect and powerful bonds that they are used for the manufacture of Russian nuclear submarine hulls and as the Ukrainians discovered at Chernobyl, they repel radiation – as a result they are also used for encapsulating the most toxic products on the planet. One of our early projects will be to use MgO to produce a straw bale barn, straw bale having excellent thermal properties, being virtually fireproof (not that that will be an issue with a material like MgO which has a melting point of several thousand degrees), earthquake and hurricane proof, provided it is anchored correctly - the main risk is not destruction but being lifted away if winds are exceptional... It has happened, several years ago a non-MgO straw bale barn in tornado alley was carried a couple of hundred yards before being rotated and redeposited in one piece. Inside our growing barn we intend to use a combination of hydroponic (water culture) and aquaponic (fish culture) fruit and vegetable growing systems.

A key issue here is the long, harsh winter, where temperatures regularly drop to 20 or 30 below and there are only a few hours of light each day, so we will be testing compost as a primary heating source - a well designed compost heap gets up to over 50 degrees within a couple of days – and we will be supplementing the heat as required. The compost product will be used on our outdoor permaculture projects, enabling us to use techniques as shown in the well-known Back to Eden film; a process that employs newspaper with wood chips and compost. This naturally reduces weeding, watering, makes planting and harvesting easier, eliminates digging and reduces the impact of pests. It also facilitates far greater productivity as well as saving hundreds of hours of back breaking labour each year and it will enable us to grow crops suited to alkaline soil next to the ones better suited to the local acid soil conditions.

One of the indoor growing systems we will be appraising is the

Volksgarden, an ingenious rotating drum system of 48” in diameter – think of the inside of

a washing machine – this has a light at the centre of the spindle and a bath for feeding and watering the plants in the base unit, which also powers the rotation cycle. The plants are slid into the drum on trays and because the rotation means the plants are effectively growing in zero gravity conditions, the result is accelerated growth and fruition, tomatoes fruit in around 30 days compared to 90. In practical terms this also helps to save the environment. In combination with our other technologies (energised water, Calcium Carbonate spraying) and by stacking the machines we expect to grow at least 20 times the food in the same space compared to growing outdoors and to benefit from organic fish, fruit and veg all year round, with next to no manual input except for daily harvesting and periodic replanting. Once we've appraised the results of this first experiment we are already considering making a second compartment to our growing barn or building a second barn to create a heated tropical growing area. Our ambition is to have the best food in Norway – no ifs or buts absolutely fresh organic produce every day of the year and not limited to local produce, so our ambition extends to pomegranates, guava, pineapples, star fruit, figs, avocados, citrus fruits, papaya and even dwarf banana trees. Any items not covered by our in-house food production should be tradable, as the intention is not just self sufficiency but the creation of abundance and unmatched quality that can be sold, traded, preserved, or donated to members of the local community. All of this will save transport and distribution costs, packaging and trips to the local supermarkets for highly priced organic food that has typically been picked days beforehand, unripe or beginning to rot and wrapped in plastic – resulting in poor quality, waste and pollution.

Year Around

The next element in our concept involves the purification and energization of water. It may be surprising but lack of water can be an issue even in a country replete with lakes and rivers, especially if you are 400m up a local hill. The nearest water is 30m or more below us, requiring the use of wells, but water is often short and currently needs to be treated carefully. By harvesting it from rooftops we will have plenty more, in which case it will need to be purified and energised. Energization is a process using technology like Dan Winter's Vortex Imploder, recently tested by friends at Auroville in waste removal and by Dan and his team in the greening the desert project in Dubai. The result of energisation is far faster cleansing of waste, coupled with greater water efficiency through increased plant growth. The result Dan and his team achieved in the desert, when coupled with biochar, compost and mineral supplements was plant growth within weeks and on relatively low amounts of water, treated by his Schaubergerinspired magnetic vortex system. Our intent is to ensure the water we put back into the environment is as clean if not cleaner than the water we take from it and our own water is of excellent quality and subject to no future restrictions or limitations. On this basis we will harvest rainwater for our personal use as well as our gardening projects.

When it comes to waste our self reliance on home grown produce will mean we can virtually eliminate use of plastics and anything else that is 'donated' from the local supermarkets. On top of this we will be implementing systems to either use urine waste for plant fertiliser (by diluting it 10:1 with water), or growing algae from it which can feed the aquaponic fish, be turned into compost, or used as biochar. The solid waste will again be used productively in the form of output from composting toilets.

The Birthing of Global Light Center In meetings all across the country with every type of person, in group after group, the visions and future scenarios are uncanny in their similarity of theme. The sense of impending radical change is accompanied by a deep sense of inner peace on the other side of the upheaval. The global view that has emerged is this: By 2052, we will be far fewer in population but feeling incredibly peaceful, safe and blessed by life itself. By then, our world will have transformed into more of a water world with our intuition rather than the mind leading the way. Some life altering event (or series of events) happen somewhere in the neighborhood of 2017. The clarion call to wake-up has already gone out, which finds us making clear and purposeful decisions to leave all the clutter of consumer-driven living behind. Components of the Centers As we spread out around the world, we are leveraging global resources and aligning with other visionaries and groups to build a series of Centers in key locations on every continent. The Centers are being designed around the question, “How do we want to live?” It is the answer to this question that will determine what goes into the design, construction, and operation of the Centers. Components of a Center include: • Residential retreat centers • Self-sustaining eco-villages * Conference and meeting spaces • Primary and secondary schools * Organic and soil preserving farming practices and humane animal husbandry • Onsite food production * Water purification and treatment facilities * Air purification and recirculation systems for enclosed spaces * Electricity generation plants using green energy resources, such as wind and solar

Some of the Centers are being anchored in as fully selfcontained, self-sufficient biospheres capable of supporting life for up to 12 to 27 years. Biospheres such as the one located in Cornwall in Southwest England offer pristine living environments for enhancing wellbeing, restoring and maintaining health and for high-yield food production. They are built to withstand the forces of nature and to serve as frequency stabilizers for the human technologists who harmonize the human body’s energy field with that of the Earth. The Light Centers, once fully in place and operational, all working together in oneness, are designed to neutralize and lessen the affect of these changes to the earth’s atmosphere. The Timelin The first three Centers have already been anchored into the holographic field. Life is education, and there is still much to learn. The same is true of communication, which means nothing if words are not put into practice. In this short review, therefore, we will begin with a focus on our third element, that of food.

Every sustainable community needs to grow its own food, not only for its own population, but as an extension to others in alleviating hunger and poverty. Often the best solution is organic production, based on a system of farming that replenishes soil fertility without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, synthetic hormones, genetic engineering, or other ecologically unsound practices The Academy For Future Science has worked in Mexico in conjunction with Conciencia e Investigación Para La Salud (Health Awareness and Research www.cismexico.org/ ), a research company that has developed some singular farming methods, such as the tiered or pyramidal “permaculture” technique for small farms or single family back yard plots. Austrian farmer Sepp Holzer (www.holzeragroecology.com/) has furthered the earliest work on “permaculture” that was expounded by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren and associates during the 1960s and 1970s. If we view farming as we view spiritual development, it becomes no longer simply ‘repetitive, back-breaking work’ but a movement or dance with nature. Certainly, constant maintenance involves weeding, trudging through mud in the rainy season, coping with sun and dust in dry periods, and remaining sensitive to seasonal continuity, particularly in this time of climate change. In planting its land, a community should include fruit trees and berries that will attract bees and continue for years to come. Traditional ways of creating topsoil, such as worm farms, work well on a small scale, but new solutions are needed for larger quantities of topsoil. Probably one of the most successful applications for building topsoil comes from a “No-Till use of multi-species cover crops,” as created at the Menoken Farm in North Dakota and used by several farms from Kansas to Colorado (studied by Jay Fuhrer of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and at Washington State University at Puyallup puyallup.wsu.edu/soilmgmt/SusAg.html). They have used a “warm-season cocktail” of plants which could include cowpea and soybean, where the legumes x the nitrogen; millet and sun ower, to introduce high carbon content into the soil; and radish and turnips to secure deep nutrients. The same can be done in the cool-season, where the mix could include oat and millet along with lesser amounts of turnips, radish, and red clover.

We also want to mention brie y the work of our colleague Jim Dilatosso and his agricultural sound machines called Agrosonic. This is similar to Dan Carlson’s Sonic Bloom technology (sonicbloom.info/), which realizes that we cannot grow crops without the sounds of nature, and attempts to recreate the sonic vibrations of insects and birds to help stimulate plant growth by vibrationally activating the ATP cycle. All these achievements can lead to wellworking eco-villages or cooperatives created around green strategies in both city and countryside, with ethical and spiritual values included in order to reestablish an earthly Garden of Eden.

Wind technologies are offering new blade designs, and there are also innovative solar technologies. The solar industry now produces lower cost thin- lm solar, produced on a roll similar to that used in papermaking. Although mostly applied to standard square panels like those used on roofs, some examples are more inventive, especially those that use a non-silicon semiconductor material. These devices use a ne layer of semiconducting material which includes copper, indium, gallium selenide (CIGS), or cadmium telluride, at a fraction of the cost. Although elements including silicon are costly, the thinness of the cell makes it cheaper in terms of material costs. Compared with crystalline silicon, thin- lm technology uses only about 1/100th the amount of silicon per watt of electricity produced. Several companies pioneered the t e c h n o l o g y, b u t w i t h C h i n a i n t h e manufacturing game it has been very dif cult for other companies to come forward. Among them, PowerFilm Solar (www.power lmsolar.com/ )is trying to place their solar product in everything from metal

roofs to membrane systems to architectural fabric. Solar panels are becoming a smart addition to any survival kit, especially in regions struck by catastrophes such as earthquakes, where immediate light and workable power systems could accelerate recovery. The solar industry continues to grow and is expected to triple in size over the coming years. Thin- lm technologies now allow solar energy to be placed anywhere — a laptop, a cell phone, even a camping tent (see for example Eureka Solar Intent and PowerFilm Solar). In addition to solar, communities should consider biomass and water generators depending upon their needs and locations. Trash-to-gas can be accomplished on a small scale, with garbage from the community burned to generate biogas for cooking and other gas needs. If the community is lucky enough to have a source of running water on its property, small water generators (microhydro turbines) can be used for supplemental energy needs. Homes should always have a good pantry or food storage area with insulation to keep the temperature 50 degrees F. or less. We can celebrate our awareness of how to move into a state of being that does not violate nature and creates an ongoing prosperous future, but evolving a spiritual family takes an equally serious commitment In a community, the consciousness of the whole must prevail over the interest of the parts, yet a psychology of Love and understanding needs to be felt by each member. There has to be an understanding that each one is not perfect, yet each is unique and helpful to the greater whole. Compassion and tolerance have to be constantly employed, and each individual needs to take self-re ection seriously when contentions arise Consequently, in order to build the spirit of unity within the community, there should be a daily practice which can include contemplation and meditation where everyone in the spiritual family joins together. During this time, songs should be used to maintain the vibrations of protection around the community, to build healthy personal relationships, and to promote the extension of advanced knowledge and wisdom to others in the area who are attracted by the music. Additionally, each community should have a daily and healthy regimen of exercise and ‘work-karma’ spelled out for everyone. In building a sustainable community, there is also the building up of a multi-level network with members who have worked in businesses, community service or have shown mature skills in agricultural and engineering so that a plan of action can be accomplished. Each group should help in shelters, meal centers, and other positive community projects. We are reminded of old ways of living, of communities like the Essenes, who learned to survive in the desert, living a life characterized by simplicity and the appreciation for all life. Sometimes there will be the need for sincere people to be willing to expand their immediate family to live together in available rooms, or even use garage spaces that can be legally converted into extra rooms. We must also af rm that the quality of life should no longer be measured by the quantity of our possessions, but by the quality of Earth-human relationships. Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate) is a new discipline that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Studying a leaf to invent a better solar cell is an example. I think of it as “innovation inspired by nature.”

Like the viceroy butter y imitating the monarch, we humans are imitating the best adapted organisms in our habitat. We are learning, for instance, how to harness energy like a leaf, grow food like a prairie, build ceramics like an abalone, selfmedicate like a chimp, create color like a peacock, compute like a cell, and run a business like a hickory forest.

The core idea is that nature, imaginative by necessity, has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, and microbes are the consummate engineers. Let’s take a look at one of these categories: materials. Right now, we use what’s called “heat, beat, and treat” to make materials. Kevlar, for instance, the stuff in ak jackets, is our premier, high-tech material. Nothing stronger or tougher. But how do we make it? We pour petroleum-derived molecules into a pressurized vat of concentrated sulfuric acid, and boil it at several hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Their lightsensitive “pentad” mimics a photosynthetic reaction center, creating a tiny, sunpowered battery. This could signal a low-energy, low-toxin route to computer components Joanna Aizenberg (Lucent) has mimicked the process by which the brittlestar selfassembles distortion-free lenses out of seawater Jay Harman (PAXscienti c) has created a super-ef cient fan blades, aerators, and propellers based on the geometry of the ow-friendly spiral found in seashells, kelp, and rams horns A. K. Geim (University of Manchester) has developed a glue-free, yet sticky, tape modeled on the dry physical adhesion of the gecko’s “setae” ---tiny bristles on their feet that adhere to surfaces through Van Der Waals forces. The sustainability potential here is in “design for disassembly.” Assembling products using gecko tape instead of glue would allow recyclers to disassemble products without adhesive contamination. Richard Wrangham (Harvard) is zeroing in on medicinal compounds useful to humans by watching chimps heal themselves with plants from nature’s medicine cabinet. Thomas Eisner (Cornell) is letting the behavior of insects tell him which plants may be good bets for new drugs. If insects ignore a leaf, he gures the plant is full of secondary compounds—defenses for the plant and drugs for us. Various researchers in Industrial Ecology are looking for ways to apply nature’s lessons of economy, ef ciency, cooperation, and rootedness to the marketplace. Closed-loop eco-parks, patterned after mature ecosystems like redwood forests, are now being built in Chattanooga, Brownsville, Baltimore, and Cape Charles Jeremy Mabbitt (Codefarm) and numerous other companies are mimicking natural selection as an optimizing tool in computer software called genetic algorithms.

Natural systems agriculture looks at a landscape and says “What grows here naturally?” In the midwest, it’s the prairie. For 5000 years, the prairie has done a great job of holding the soil, resisting pests and weeds, and sponsoring its own fertility, all without our help. The secret of the prairie is that it is composed of perennial plants growing in polycultures (many species in the same eld)

Though radical, this idea of breeding a prairie you can eat is quite realistic, when you consider that most of our crops were bred from perennial wild relatives. Over ten thousand years, we turned them into annuals and narrowed their genetic pools. So now we are looking to widen those genetic pools and breed perennial traits back into edible grains

Unfortunately, we can’t eat a prairie. Over the last 100 years, we have plowed up the prairie and replaced it with our own agriculture, based on annual plants grown in monocultures (one species for miles). Unlike the prairie’s perennial polycultures, these annual monocultures do need our help. Using annuals means we have to plow each year, which leads to soil erosion. To make up for poorer soil, we pour on tons of chemical fertilizers. To protect our all-you-can-eat monocultures from pests, we heap on oilbased pesticides. It works out to about 10 kilocalories of petroleum to produce one kilocalorie of food

The way to get off this “treadmill of vigilance”, says Wes Jackson of the Land Institute, is to breed perennial crops that we can eat and grow them in a prairie-like polyculture. Jackson’s edible prairie would not merely be new; it would be the polar opposite of what we have now. The plants would overwinter, so we wouldn’t need to plow and plant every year, or worry about soil erosion. One of the more radical ideas put forth in your book pertains to a new form of agriculture that models itself on plant communities that are indigenous to the ecosystem. How realistic is this? And is this really new

What we would have, instead of an extractive agriculture that mimics industry, is a selfrenewing agriculture that mimics nature

Right now, natural systems agriculture is at the Kitty Hawk stage—the researchers have proven the agricultural equivalent of drag and lift. Working alone, they will need 25-50 years of wind tunnel tests before domestic prairies can be planted in the Breadbasket. If they get support, the shift could come a lot sooner. It depends on what kind of research we as a society choose to fund. As Chuck Hassebrook of the Rural Affairs Center points out, research is a form of social planning What will prevent humans from, as you say, "stealing nature's thunder and using it in the ongoing campaign against life? That’s a good question, because any technology, even if it’s a technology inspired by nature, can be used for good or bad. The airplane, for instance, was inspired by bird ight; a mere eleven years after we invented it, we were bombing people with it. As author Bill McKibben says, our tools are always employed in the service of an ideology. Our ideology—the story we tell ourselves about who we are in the universe— has to change if we are to treat the living Earth with respect

Right now we tell ourselves that the Earth was put here for our use. That we are at the top of the pyramid when it comes to Earthlings. But of course this is a myth. We’ve had a run of spectacular luck, but we are not necessarily the best survivors over the long haul. We are not immune to the laws of natural selection, and if we overshoot the carrying capacity of the Earth, we will pay the consequences. Practicing ethical biomimicry will require a change of heart. We will have to climb down from our pedestal and begin to see ourselves as simply a species among species, as one vote in a parliament of 30 million. When we accept this fact, we start to realize that what is good for the living Earth is good for us as well If we agree to follow this ethical path, the question becomes: how do we judge the “rightness” of our innovations? How do we make sure that they are life-promoting? Here, too, I think biomimicry can help. The best way to scrutinize our innovations is to compare them to what has come before. Does this strategy or design have a precedence in nature? Has something like it been time-tested long enough to wear a seal of approval If we use what nature has done as a lter, we stop ourselves from, for instance, transferring genes from one class of organism to another. We wouldn’t put ounder genes into a strawberry plant, for instance. Biomimicry says: if it can’t be found in nature, there is probably a good reason for its absence. It may have been tried, and long ago edited out of the population. Natural selection is wisdom in action

In the business chapter, you talk about the need to “shift our niche.” What do you mean by that?

A “niche” is a profession in the ecosystem. Right now, we humans are lling a pioneering niche. We are acting like the weeds in a newly turned farmer’s eld. These weeds move into a sun- lled space and use nutrients and water as quickly as they can, turning them into plant bodies and plenty of seeds. They are annuals; they don’t bother to put down winter roots or recycle because their moment in the sun is short. Within a few years, they’ll be shaded out by the more ef cient, long-lasting perennial bushes and shrubs. That’s why they produce so many seeds; they’re always on to the next sundrenched horn of plenty Back before our world was full, and we always had somewhere else to go, this colonizing “Type I” strategy allowed us to stay one step ahead of reality. These days, when we’ve gone everywhere there is to go, we have to forget about colonizing and learn to close the loops Closing the loops means trying to emulate the natural communities that know how to stay put without consuming their ecological capital. Mature ecosystems such as oak-hickory forests are masters of optimizing, rather than maximizing, throughput. They recycle all their wastes, use energy and materials ef ciently, and diversify and cooperate to use the habitat without bankrupting it. Ecologists call these Type III communities. Industrial ecologists are trying to glean lessons from natural communities to actually shift our economy from Type I to Type III. From ragweeds to redwood forests. The latest business consultants in this eld are people fresh from gorilla counts and butter y surveys. I never thought I’d see the day, but it’s true: the Birkenstocks are teaching the suits

How would a Biomimetic Revolution come about? In the book I talk about one possible path to biomimicry, which is modeled after my own experience in trying to renew an aging pond. The steps are simple but profound in their implications: They are 1. Quieting human cleverness, 2. Listening to nature, 3. Echoing nature, and 4. Protecting the wellspring of good ideas through stewardship Quieting human cleverness involves the maturing of the human race, the acknowledgment that nature knows best. I think we are coming closer to this. We are seeing that our cleverness has painted us into some corners, and we are open for suggestions Listening to nature is the discovery step. It’s important that we interview the ora and fauna of the planet in an organized way. Out of the estimated 5 to 30 million living species on Earth, only about 1.4 million have been named! I would love to see us create a Biological Peace Corps where people can volunteer to inventory biodiversity for two years. I’d also love to see systematics, which is the in-depth study of animal and plant groups, become a sought-after career again. We need people who know all there is to know about particular branches of nature’s tree This step of closely listening to nature is not just for scientists, however. We all need to become ecologically literate, and the best way to do that is to immerse ourselves in nature, in childhood and as adults

Echoing nature is where we actually try to mimic what we discover. Echoing nature will take a cross-fertilization of ideas. The technologists who invent products and systems need to interact with biologists so

they can match human needs with nature’s solutions. Task forces and formal societies would allow for periodic interactions, but for more permanent collaborations, we should design university courses that teach biomimetic design I can also see using the Internet as a place to store our information. A giant database of biological knowledge would serve as an innovation matchmaking service. An engineer charged with designing a new desalination device, for instance, could easily review the strategies and root-membrane blueprints of the mangrove—a tree that lters seawater with its solar-powered roots. This “Google for Nature’s Solutions” would organize biological research by functional search term (in the vocabulary of designers and engineers). It would place life’s wellspring of evolved ideas where they belong---in the public domain---so the ideas themselves cannot be patented. This is a gigantic, but important, rst step to move ideas from biology to human systems design Stewardship of wild and settled places should be the natural outgrowth of a biomimetic worldview. Once we see nature as a source of inspiration, a mentor, our relationship with the living world changes. We realize that the only way to keep learning from nature is to safeguard naturalness, which is the source of those good ideas How would a Biomimetic Revolution change our lives “Doing it nature’s way” has the potential to change the way we grow food, make materials, harness energy, heal ourselves, store information, and conduct business. This would change everything, ushering in a new era based not on what we can extract from nature, but on what we can learn from her.

The rst level of biomimicry is the mimicking of natural form. For instance, you may mimic the hooks and barbules in an owl’s feather to create a fabric that opens anywhere along its surface. Or you can imitate the frayed edges that grant the owl its silent ight. Copying feather design is just the beginning, because it may or may not yield something sustainable.

Water is life, and the lack of it the

greatest threat to the survival of mankind at this time in human history – and so on.

How could I make such a

ludicrous assertion? Well, I can’t expect to convince you in so short an article, but I do hope to offer a few insights that may inspire hope, and prompt you to deeper consideration. First of all, let me clarify what I mean by abundant. Abundance is not unlimited supply or vast surpluses, but simply, always enough – when used consciously, responsibly and conservatively. Do we really need more than that? Now, let’s explore some of water’s lesser known past on this planet for clues about its future. Most of us are familiar with the hydrological cycle – water evaporates from the ocean’s surface, condenses into clouds and is blown overland where it precipitates as rain and snow and eventually finds its way back to the ocean via lakes, rivers and subterranean flow. That’s great as far as it goes, but 4.5 billion years ago, the earth was a smoldering cinder. Where were the oceans then – and more importantly, how did they come to dominate over 70% of the planet’s surface? Until recently, comets were

considered the most likely source of

Earth’s water, but new data from the mass spectrometry of the Hale-Bopp comet reveals a concentration of “heavy water” (deuterium) far higher than that found in the world’s oceans, leading researchers to conclude that only a small portion, perhaps

10%, of Earth’s water derives from comets.

Of course, many people conclude the obvious – that the oceans came from rain. Well, there’s certainly some truth in that, but according to the best estimates, if every molecule of water was squeezed from the atmosphere, it would cover the Earth with only about one inch of water. If rain filled the oceans, where did the rain come from? Over 50 years ago, UCLA geology professor and former president of the American Geological Society, William Rubey, was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Lyndon Johnson for his theory that both the oceans and the earth's atmosphere come from the interior of the earth. According to his calculations, based on extensive data from the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, DC, the uplift of an igneous crust 40 km thick will release enough water to fill the present oceans. Today, this water is known as primary, juvenile, magmatic or earth-generated water, but knowledge of it goes back thousands of years. In Genesis II, 5-6, for example, we read the following: When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the LORD God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land. Moses was perhaps the first primary water hydrologist.

After wandering for 40 years in the

wilderness, the Israelites were getting thirsty. So “Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their

In 2011, I was in Jordan to do a primary water presentation at the International Permaculture Convergence and afterwards visited the desert site near the crest of a desolate limestone ridge where Moses allegedly struck that rock. After 6,000 years, water was still coming out in abundance! Primary water was well known to the ancient Greeks. Aristotle, in Meterologicia notes,

“The water coming from the earth unites with rain water to produce rivers. The rainfall alone is quite insufficient to supply the rivers of the world with water.” In the Koran we read, "For among rocks there are some from which rivers gush forth; others there are which when split asunder send forth water." Agricola, considered the “Father of Mineralogy”, observed that, “Besides rain, there is another kind of water by which the interior of the earth is soaked, so that being heated it can continually give off halitus (water vapor), from which arises a great and abundant force of waters.” More recent primary water pioneers include the great early 20th century Austrian geologist, Eduard Suess, who coined the term “juvenile water”, and his student, Stephan Reiss, a mining engineer who located prolific wells throughout the world at the request of heads of state who learned of his unconventional, but highly successful techniques for locating water in arid, drought stricken regions.

Master dowsers Vern Cameron and Bill Cox were also

successful in siting highly productive wells with their understanding of primary water. In the 1950s they were able to restore California’s dried out Lake Elsinore to its original glory with three primary water wells producing over 9,500 gallons of water per minute in total. Despite the scant attention paid to primary water by conventional hydrologists, my own research has produced a wealth of evidence highlighting its fundamental importance to our planetary life, its widespread appearance and the promise it holds for humanity. For example, all of the world’s largest lakes are found in rift zones, geologic discontinuities or volcanically active regions where deep

waters of magmatic origin make their way to the surface.

All of the world’s major rivers are fed by primary sources. Countless springs all over the world, both hot and cold, have flowed abundantly for thousands of years without interruption – even in some of the world’s most arid regions. Volcanic lakes, hydrothermal vents, desert oases, deep boreholes and the abundance of water throughout our solar system and in deep space all point YellowStone National Park

to the magnitude of this phenomenon.

Teaming up with Stephan Reiss protégé, Pal Pauer, the US non-profit, Global Resource Alliance, launched a project in 2007 called Maji Mengi (Abundant Water) to bring clean, safe water to villages in East Africa suffering extreme water scarcity. In the early days, drilling locations were located by dowsing and observation of visible geological and biological indicators associated with primary water sources.

More recently, electrical

resistivity methods have been added to help pinpoint narrow, conductive fractures in the underlying bedrock which serve as conduits for water generated at depth. So far, over 75 successful boreholes serving thousands of families have been completed. The cost per person is less than $30.

The deep seated water is bacteria free and

continues to flow throughout the year – even in times of drought.

This project

demonstrates, on a small scale, the potential of primary water to help meet the need of hundreds of millions on the planet today still suffering from the lack of clean, safe water. In the foreword to a book about the work of Stephan Reiss published in 1960 called New Water for a Thirsty World, philosopher Aldous Huxley remarks, After seeing a few of his wells spouting water from the solid granite at the rate of two or three thousand gallons a minute, and after listening to what he had to say about faults and fissures, about juvenile water and primary water, about hydrogen and oxygen coming together at high temperatures and under vast pressures in the bowels of the earth and rising, as H2O towards the surface, wherever the crust was weak, I began to understand the mystery of Nefta and Jericho; and I began at the same time to feel a little more hopeful about humanity's prospects for survival and a good life on this under-watered and

soon to be overpopulated planet.

Abundant life is the heritage of humanity, if only we can learn to live in harmony with one another and with nature, and to use wisely and reverently that which our planet so generously supplies. Like many springs around the world, this one in the middle of the Gobi Desert called Crescent Lake has not run dry for thousands of years. Where do it’s perpetual waters originate? Africa’s Great Rift Valley, whose deep lakes are home to over 25% of the world’s fresh water. Hydrothermal vents discovered in the last 20 years at the bottom of these lakes testify to the primary origin of these waters. A system of berms and ditches, based on Permaculture, and the topography of the land, will guide rainfall to low points, in the ponds we build. New air to water systems, as well as the proven solar distillation method, offered at www.biohome.net in their 'Air Well' system, will tap into the moisture, swept from the ocean surface by the wind, into water we will use, even in dry areas that receive little rainfall each year, such as found on the Kohala, and Kona sides of the island.
