When each journey through your building is just right,

everything Perfection is quite a challenge in a modern facility where each trip may involve taking one or more means of vertical transport, obtaining access to secure areas, navigating to unfamiliar offices, etc. – all the while just wanting to be at your destination and get on with the job at hand.

To achieve this, Schindler has developed unique ways of communicating with building occupants, which take the human interface to an entirely new level. The PORT Technology can even anticipate needs before they are communicated, the ultimate skill of the experienced personal assistant.

With the PORT Technology by Schindler, the personal transit management system, the travellers’ only requirement is to simply communicate their identity and required destination. The PORT Technology takes care of the rest by planning and executing a seamless journey using an optimal route designed to take the shortest possible time to complete.

And ultimately, that’s the key to the service that the PORT Technology provides. During day-to-day business and even during emergencies, the PORT Technology is there to make the complex business of moving from one location to another in a modern building without hassle for the individual and – in doing so – extremely efficient for everyone.

g changes The PORT Technology personal transit management has the potential to remove many of the existing constraints on interior layouts, thereby allowing architects greater creative freedom when designing the next generation of buildings. Buildings of the future, with the help of the PORT Technology, will provide the truly differentiated service level essential to successfully attracting tenants in today’s highly competitive commercial real estate market. Buildings that will be living proof of the fact that ‌

the exceptional building environment you and your tenants have always wanted is now attainable.

Introducing the

PORT

personal occupant requirement terminal

At the heart of the PORT Technology is a totally new component called the PORT. When you are committed to providing continuous service to a building’s occupants as they go about their business, it is essential to have a consistent method of communicating with them. The extraordinary new PORT can provide a whole range of command and communication functions from a wide variety of locations. Functions that utilise a standard hardware design which is as reliable as it is elegant, and which can be customised easily to suit the most demanding architectural specifications. The PORT Technology personal transit management helps provide your tenants with a new and enhanced service experience – and communication is the key. That’s why we designed the PORT …

a new concept in communication for the buildings of tomorrow.

Access control is a fully integrated component of the PORT Technology. This means that equipment such as the elevators can actually play a significant role in providing the security that is an inherent requirement of such systems. The PORT Technology can be added to virtually any design of barrier. Admission credentials are checked by referring to a central occupant database. The PORT Technology access control provides a number of unique features, which help ensure that maximum vigilance is maintained, consistent with the efficient operation of the building.

The PORT Technology access control helps ensure that both vigilance and building efficiency can be maintained at all times.

ntrol Elevator assignment Allows a pre-programmed card to generate an automatic elevator assignment at the barrier. Elevator blocking Blocks elevator departure if unauthorised entry to the lobby is detected. Anti-pass back Prevents use of a card by a second party if passed back across the barrier by the original user. Forward credentialing Invalidates or limits operation of the card if not used when required for access. The user’s card could be rendered invalid and the user would only be allowed to return to the lobby or other designated area for reactivation.

15 years ago, Schindler pioneered destination dispatching, generally acknowledged to be the most efficient stand-alone method of moving passengers vertically through a building. It was this unparalleled experience that allowed the development of the PORT Technology’s vertical transportation component that, even when considered in isolation, is another major step forward in traffic management.

the floors to which the user is allowed to travel.

Predictive call entry Based on previous usage patterns, a list of the most frequently selected destinations of the passenger can be displayed, bearing in mind the time and location of the passenger.

Touch-less operation If a card is held continuously at the PORT, each destination allowed will be highlighted in turn. When the required destination is highlighted, the user simply removes the card to register it.

Pre-programmed operation A card can be pre-programmed to enter a specific destination. This destination can vary depending on the originating floor. Additionally, a card can be programmed to only display

Infotainment A fully personalised audio and visual experience can be offered to passengers who can program the system to reflect specific information or entertainment requirements during the journey.

Contextual operation Above the lobby, a PORT display can be programmed to show only the floors, which are relevant to general users of that floor. For example, the other floors rented by the occupying tenant, together with the common floors, can be shown.

Redefining, yet again, the pinnacle of performance that a specific group of elevators can reach.

unavailability

tolerance

Anytime elevators need to be removed from service, as in a modernisation, overall user availability will suffer. Schindler does not believe that any drop in service level is ever desirable. The PORT Technology uses a unique approach to help minimise the negative impact if individual cars are unavailable. This approach provides service at certain low-volume floors by making a stop at the floor above the destination floor of arriving passengers or at a floor below for departing ones. Passengers are then requested to walk down one level at either the beginning or end of their journey.

This simple action reduces the number of stops and therefore allows quicker returns to the lobby with a corresponding increase in handling capacity. It is only undertaken on a very limited basis and will affect as few people as possible consistent with maintaining overall efficiency. The feature and its benefits are clearly explained to the tenants ahead of time to avoid any issues and, of course, the disabled and other special groups are excluded from the limited need to walk. The PORT terminal allows clear instructions to be given to passengers, both when they register a destination and again in the car. What it ultimately achieves is the highest possible level of service during reduced elevator availability.

An unavailable elevator should not mean unavailable good service.

emergency

evacuation (Not available where prohibited by applicable code)

It is becoming increasingly clear to the operators of tall buildings that, when certain emergency situations arise which require evacuation, the elevators could play an important role in helping to accomplish it in a timely and orderly fashion. While an evacuation plan is the responsibility of the building management working with the appropriate authority, the PORT Technology offers an approach which is substantially ahead of any system currently available. The PORT Technology uses the exclusive PORT to provide clear passenger instructions to help ensure that anyone approaching the elevator lobby can be informed as to whether they should wait for elevator service or take the stairs.

SCHNT45457E_a_PORT_A4_.indd 14

When elevator service is provided, the number of cars, based on current population data, required to evacuate an entire floor will, where practical, arrive together. We believe that this will serve to mitigate possible overcrowding of cabins in an evacuation scenario. It should be stressed that the paramount factor in a safe building evacuation is building management’s plan, which should be periodically rehearsed to help ensure its proper execution when needed.

Everyone’s been talking about evacuation using elevators, only the PORT Technology has a credible scheme to help make it happen.

personalisa personalisation

The PORT Technology is a system for everyone. And everyone is different. Different people have different needs and the PORT Technology helps meet all of them. Schindler ID® won the “Breaking Barriers” award from the EU Commission as an acknowledgement of our contribution in this area. And today, with PORT Technology, that contribution has expanded significantly. By always knowing the exact requirements of a user, whether it is more time, differing guidance, more space, a specific cab or any number of others, the PORT Technology helps ensure that the journey delivered is customised to meet them. The PORT Technology, committed to your personal journey.

A big step

footprint The PORT Technology meets today’s environmental challenges in two distinct ways. First, the equipment has been designed to use a reduced level of power consistent with the many features it provides. Second, the system provides the building with many options to lower its overall energy consumption by a more intelligent use of its entire installed equipment base. The majority of the hardware used by the PORT Technology consists of PORTs, and Schindler designed them to be extremely energy efficient. Each PORT has a proximity sensor to detect when it is required to be active and at all other times is placed into a low energy consumption state. The processor, the heart of each PORT, has the lowest energy consumption in its class and, finally, the component is manufactured under ISO 14000 to be RoHS compliant with halogen-free cables and solvent-free paint.

SCHNT45457E_a_PORT_A4_.indd 19

The PORT Technology manages all of the trips made by your elevators so that passengers are transported in the most efficient manner possible. This, in turn, produces a very efficient use of the elevator group even during heavy traffic. Traditionally during off-peak times, all the elevators in the group are still in operation. This means that elevators will do many trips to transport only a few passengers, leading to low efficiency. Usage of energy is particularly high in lightly loaded elevator cars because of the large load offset between cab and counterweight. The unique PORT Technology Energy Control Option or ECO allows the average acceptable waiting time to be defined for a specific building. Whenever the current and expected future waiting times are below the specified level, the PORT Technology ECO will set nonessential elevators into standby mode. This reduces the number of elevator trips and – due to the improved bal-

ance of the elevators – should save energy for the trips undertaken. When feasible, the elevators on standby are set to an energy saving sleep mode. The use of this complementary approach for heavy and light traffic can provide significant energy savings throughout the day. The PORT Technology can offer operators of other building systems occupancy data which can help enable the more efficient use of their equipment. This data can be either historical or real-time and can enable more intelligent utilisation of other building equipment to further reduce energy use. Schindler is committed to advancing the PORT Technology to minimise customers’ total building energy consumption while making sure the energy that is used provides the optimum environment for their tenants.
