Shirley Fein:

“There is something for everyone at Sarasota Bay Club!”

“I call Sarasota Bay Club the jewel in the crown of retirement living, and I’ve had nine great years of living here. Our minds and our bodies are nourished with wonderful intellectual programs: concerts, lectures, writing programs and exercise programs – there really is something for everyone. The care of the staff is remarkable and I think it’s the best food in town! This is our home.”

n our cover we proudly feature Richard and Rebecca Hopkins of Florida Studio Theatre who are celebrating a major milestone—50 years at the helm of our beloved FST—growing it from a small upstart into a cultural powerhouse. Their dedication and leadership have played a crucial role in the theater’s success and the many accolades they’ve received are well-deserved.

With this our inaugural People issue, we asked our e-readers to nominate people whose good deeds and accomplishments they believe earn them recognition as community champions. It’s always inspiring to see people who are making a positive impact and whose heartfelt and heartwarming stories are inspirational to others. They truly help shape the fabric of our community. We are delighted to feature their submissions in this issue and learn about these selfless and giving people.

The Giving Challenge 2024, hosted by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, is indeed a remarkable biennial event that embodies the spirit of community and philanthropy. Since its inception in 2012, the Giving Challenge has been a catalyst for connection, providing over $75 million in unrestricted funding across eight challenges. The upcoming Giving Challenge is scheduled from noon to noon, April 9-10, 2024, and it’s an opportunity for the community to come together and contribute to the greater good. Your participation is vital to the success of organizations so many have come to rely on throughout the year. You can read more about it in this issue.

In the philanthropy spotlight this month are Katherine Benoit and John Brooks, known for their support of the Sarasota Opera. Both are former executives who retired to Sarasota, drawn by its vibrant arts scene. Initially, opera was not on their radar until they were invited to an opera performance. This experience was transformative for them, and they have since become deeply involved with the opera community. Their story is a testament to the welcoming nature of the Sarasota Opera and how it can foster a deep appreciation for the arts.

Our Around Town features a conversation with Jennifer Rominiecki, President and CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. With nearly two decades of experience in managing major cultural institutions with educational missions, she has been very instrumental in the growth and development of Selby Gardens. Her leadership has led to significant achievements, such as Selby Gardens becoming the first botanical garden complex in the world to be netpositive in energy production. She is known for her involvement in community events like the “Plant & Garden Festival,” which she believes are vital for gardens to connect with their communities. Moreover, her background in art museums and cultural institutions has influenced her approach to public gardens as living art, combining horticulture and art in an interdisciplinary manner.

Our education article features Mote Marine Laboratory’s new Science Education Aquarium (SEA) is indeed an exciting development for marine science education. The SEA aims to significantly enhance STEM skills and

education. It’s designed to inspire students of all ages, from kindergarten through high school, under the guiding principle of “Oceans for All.”

This state-of-the-art facility will be located at Nathan Benderson Park, serving as a nexus site for Sarasota and Manatee counties. The SEA will double the attendance of the current Mote Aquarium and provide a more accessible location. The SEA represents a significant step towards providing informal science education and enhancing ocean literacy for a broader and more diverse audience. I encourage you to learn more in this issue.

In the “Spotlight” is the 17th Annual Forks & Corks Food and Wine Festival which celebrated a significant milestone, marking the 20th anniversary of the Sarasota-Manatee Originals. This year’s Grand Tasting event was held at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art offering a showcase of food specialties from over 40 local restaurants and a collection of more than 300 unique wines from across the globe. It is always a must attend event!

On a personal note, Sarasota Scene continues to feature and identify with the people who lift our community and provide the businesses of our community with a vital platform to help with branding and messaging. We also have now established community relationships with more than 125 non-profit or charitable organizations. Through the flux of the past few challenging years, our subscriptions have increased, and our marketing relationships have expanded.

One of the many recognitions I receive about the magazine that I appreciate most, is hearing directly from individuals. I love it when someone calls and asks me to search the archives for an article on someone in support of a celebration of their life, or a milestone event for a business we covered in the past. Or perhaps it’s a photo of someone from the past who is having a special birthday or anniversary. Whatever the case, I love it that Scene has been the magazine that has chronicled the lives of so many Sarasotans since in1957. I also love serving as a Sarasota ambassador for those new to the city and make recommendations on our arts and cultural amenities.

After all, it is the people of this community that make it so great, and I am so proud to be a part of the Sarasota scene!

Investing in Quality

Catherine Avery’s impact on people’s lives is evidenced by how her work has helped give them greater financial stability not only to enjoy their lives into retirement but have a cushion for unexpected expenses.

Avery is no stranger to the unexpected. She was working at the World Trade Center for Morgan Stanley on 9/11, but had been running an errand at the time of the attack. With a five-month old baby at home, the experience was a driving factor for her to take her career in a different diretion. She left her job as vice president of Morgan Stanley in 2003 and held other positions before starting her own investment firm—CAIM—in 2007.

Noting many of her loyal investors moved to Florida’s west coast, she followed suit in 2021, establishing CAIM as a Florida corporation in Longboat Key.

The independent, 100 percent woman-owned investment management firm specializes in a low volatility equity strategy focusing on high quality dividend paying stocks for women and conservative investors and those who use their investments to supplement their income.

Being independent, the company is free of conflicts and has a fiduciary responsibility to always act in the best interests of its clients. Charles Schwab & Co. is CAIM’s primary custodian.

After earning a Bachelor’s degree in finance from New York University, Avery amassed a vast portfolio management experience spanning a wide range of asset classes working for Shearson Lehman Hutton, Prudential Securities and Merrill Lynch in addition to Morgan Stanley Investment Management.

“I liked the richness the town had to offer in terms of culture and that it seemed to be a growing hub for businesses,” notes Avery of her move to Longboat Key, adding the beach is one of her happy places.

Avery’s experiences have earned her many honors, the most recent being recognized in November as an excellence awardee

in Investment News 2023 Women to Watch Portfolio Manager of the Year category.

She’s also been a source for many news media outlets on various investment topics.

As one of the wealthiest and largest among U.S. demographics, Baby Boomers will have an increased life expectancy and many plan to work past the traditional retirement age. Those factors— as well as unexpected health costs—need to be considered in financial planning.

Avery notes people should start planning for their retirement as soon as they start thinking about it. This allows for the portfolio to begin compounding income generation. Doing so allows the portfolio to be set up for when they do retire.

“People want consistency, predictability, reliability and they don’t want to run out of money,” she says of people’s retirement desire.

While that may be attained by just purchasing a Treasury bond, it may not enable the retiree to stay ahead of inflation.

“You could possibly run out of money,” Avery adds.

“Dividend-paying stocks tend to be the most conservative along the risk spectrum of all stocks you can possibly own,” she says. “At the same time, you need to generate enough of a yield or income stream that makes enough you can live off of when you retire.”

But one should not inhibit growth, she says, adding there’s a “dance” between getting a high enough dividend yield and ensuring the dividend continues to grow every year while having the necessary factors for the stock price to eventually go up. Unlike other strategies that focus on either dividend growth or high yield, CAIM’s strategy blends the two methodologies.

Finding companies that build great management, products and services demonstrating the ability to generate cash flow and reliable dividends requires CAIM’s deep research and

analysis as the company customizes a client’s portfolio to meet their needs and desires.. CAIM’s investment strategy and research effort is headed by Jeffrey Cianci, a 30-year plus Wall Street veteran known for his sell side research.

As for CAIM’s focus on women, statistics show women have often felt ignored and neglected by Wall Street, Avery says.

More than 76 million American women participate in the workforce, are becoming the heads of their households, earn more than their husbands, are rising faster and further in the workforce, and starting entrepreneurial ventures.

Yet just 10 percent of women are concerned about making financial decisions if they become suddenly single, CAIM research shows.

A CAIM survey showed many women believe Wall Street offers packaged portfolios that do not resonate with them. Instead, women seek customizable, low risk and easy to understand investments.

Women tend to be intuitive – they are discerning and perceptive in their view of the world – and they tend to be more concerned with quality rather than quantity, says Avery. Finding the right fit of financial advice and investments is key to their success.

People are often stymied by fear and trust regarding investing, Avery notes.

“A lot of people we’re working with like myself have lived through several market cycles – the 1987 crash, the great financial crisis, the pandemic,” Avery points out. “We were doing a lot of hand-holding with people, guiding

them through that process and talking with them consistently about the characteristics of their portfolio and why it is set up as it is.

“It’s managing expectations for people and giving them encouragement knowing that they’re not in fly-by-night investments that are going to go away tomorrow, but are things that have historically proven that in even in downturns, they thrive and are able to recover.”

CAIM team members are eager to share their experiences through the cycles to work with clients to develop the right investment strategy.

One Big Welcoming Family Sarasota Opera:

Katherine Benoit and John Brooks

When married couple Katherine Benoit and John Brooks decided to retire to the Sarasota area, they knew they had ample opportunities to explore a wide variety of arts and culture. They already loved theater, ballet, and the orchestra—what they didn’t expect was to fall in love with opera.

After settling into their Lakewood Ranch home, friends encouraged Katherine and John to attend a performance at Sarasota Opera. The performance resonated with them and they began attending shows regularly. As the frequency of enjoying opera rose for Katherine and John, so did their involvement in the organization and the community.

“When you go to the Sarasota Opera House and walk in the front door for a performance, you’re met by the directors and staff with a very warm welcome,” says Katherine. “They’re happy to answer any questions you might have and guide you around. To me, it feels like we’ve become part of one big family. I’ve never felt that walking into any other venue.”

Initially they began volunteering for the organization and eventually became donors and co-producers. Official Sarasota Opera co-producers underwrite a substantial portion of the cost of producing the performances. They are immersed in the production process with access to dress rehearsals, receptions with artists, and exclusive artist sponsorship opportunities. Today, Katherine serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Sarasota Opera Association.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

One of the ways Katherine and John have supported the Sarasota Opera is by sponsoring an apprentice. The Apprentice Artist Program at Sarasota Opera began in 1982 and was designed to help trained singers in the important transition from student to professional life.

Sarasota Opera provides many performing opportunities throughout its fall and winter seasons for apprentices. The training aspect of the program focuses on encouraging singers to give impassioned performances through vocal expression with an understanding of the meaning of the text, the poetry, and the music. Apprentices attend classes by industry leading experts, coach foreign languages with

native born speakers, network with peers, and most importantly, get much needed performance experience.

“We’ve been sponsoring the apprentice program for about three or four years now,” says John. “It really helps to understand a little bit more about what makes someone want to pursue operatic music as a career and what it takes to succeed. Coming from a long career in the corporate world, seeing young people be successful in the artistic world is really interesting to watch unfold.”

Recently Katherine and John have become more involved in supporting the youth opera. Since 1984, Sarasota Youth Opera has given thousands of kids ages eight to 18 an opportunity to experience the joy of opera firsthand through participation in fully-staged youth opera productions, main stage productions, summer camps, and concerts throughout the community.

Sarasota Youth Opera is the only program in the country committed to presenting an annual full-scale opera production for young voices, as well as accepting everyone regardless of skill level or ability to pay.

“We are so lucky to have the talent we have in the youth opera. Just to go and watch staff work with the kids is an incredible experience. It’s so invigorating to watch them. These are young people that are developing an understanding of the opera and hopefully they’ll get more involved and continue to grow the industry. It’s something we both firmly believe in,” says Katherine.

Katherine recently purchased a bunch of tickets to the Sarasota Youth Opera to encourage her friends and family to go and experience it for the first time. Just like their experience, many of these people have continued to come back and support the Sarasota Youth Opera and the Sarasota Opera in general.

MARCH 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE 57

“I got about 50 people to visit the youth opera that had never experienced it before. This resulted in many of them becoming supporters and donors. Finding new ways to introduce the opera to the community is something that has particularly interested me,” says Katherine.

HISTORY OF SARASOTA OPERA

The current home for Sarasota Opera has a very diverse and rich history in Sarasota. Arthur Britton Edwards, the first mayor of Sarasota, unveiled the A.B Edwards Theatre in 1926, a multi-use building designed to house several different forms of entertainment. In 1979, the Asolo Opera Guild purchased the theater and began renovations for it to be a fulltime opera house. The building was finished and opened in 1984 as the Sarasota Opera House, under the company name Sarasota Opera.

From March 2007 to February 2008, the Sarasota Opera House underwent a complete renovation of the original structure. The interior of the auditorium was gutted to allow the digging of a new larger orchestra pit and overall improvement to sightlines for attendees. New seats and historically appropriate decorations were added to improve the experience. The backstage facilities were updated and the orchestra fitted with a hydraulic lift. The renovations include a restored three-story atrium as well as additional restrooms, lounges, and other audience amenities.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Today you can book tours of the Sarasota Opera House, attend a wide variety of opera performances, attend ticketed special events, and much more. There are several different restaurants and hotels in the area to make the opera a fantastic destination for tourists and visitors.

The current Winter Season is reaching its end, but you still have time to catch the following performances: Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor, Luisa Miller, and Deceit Outwitted. The final performance of the season will take place on March 24, 2024. Please visit www.SarasotaOpera.org for tickets and more information.

There are a wide range of ways to support Sarasota Opera including: individual donations, tribute gifts, costume support, and volunteerism.

There are not just plants growing at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens these days. Also growing are the hearts and minds of the many who visit each day making our beloved nature retreat so much more than it used to be.

Selby Gardens is an oasis of serenity and beauty where art now intersects with nature. It is a model of climate efficiency, and a sanctuary for contemplation and peace. It is a haven to escape the stress of daily living where you can learn, marvel, and relax. It is a place where you can enjoy garden-to-plate dining in the world’s first net positive energy botanical gardens complex. It is setting a new standard for botanical gardens, and it is quickly becoming nationally and globally known for its innovative offerings.

Much of the credit for the evolution of Selby Gardens, its well-deserved accolades, and its many recognitions are attributable to its dynamic and visionary CEO Jennifer Rominiecki.

This tireless champion of nature graciously answered our questions about the “new” Selby Gardens and her non-stop plans for its future.

Since your arrival to Selby Gardens in 2015, you enacted a new operating model and rebranded the Gardens as The Living MuseumÒ. How did the success of that repositioning help you in your creation of your threephase Master Plan, for which more than $57 million has been raised? The success of our new operating model was critical to creating a solid foundation for the institution before embarking on our critical capital needs. Implementing this model – which features rotating exhibitions and programs similar to the operation of art museums – has yielded increases of 128% in membership and 135% in overall earned revenues since 2015. Engaging this wider constituency and diversifying the institution’s revenue streams was vital to building the community’s confidence in Selby Gardens’ exciting vision for the future.

With the opening on January 11 of phase one of Selby Gardens’ three-phase Master Plan, there are now new facilities and amenities added to the complex. Please tell our readers what they will experience with the additions now completed in Phase One. Phase One of Selby Gardens’ three-phase Master Plan is very exciting for visitors as it adds 188,030 square feet of new stateof-the art facilities and amenities to our Downtown Sarasota campus.

The Morganroth Family Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF): Upon arrival, visitors will encounter The Morganroth Family Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF), which houses parking, a garden to plate restaurant entitled The Green Orchid, and a garden and gift shop. The LEAF also houses a nearly 50,000 square-foot rooftop

solar array, which will make Selby Gardens the first net positive energy botanical garden complex in the world.

Steinwachs Family Plant Research Center: The stateof-the-art Steinwachs Family Plant Research Center, which secures irreplaceable scientific resources in a hurricane-resilient structure and provides a window into once behind-the-scenes world-class research is a treasure trove. The facility contains the Elaine Nicpon Marieb Herbarium and Laboratory (housing preserved collections of more than 125,000 dried and pressed plant specimens and molecular scientific work), as well as a research library (with priceless volumes dating to the 1700s), spirit laboratory (with more than 35,000 specimens preserved in fluid—the second largest collection of its kind in the world), conference rooms and administrative offices. Weekly tours of the Steinwachs Family Plant Research Center will be offered to the public beginning this spring.

Jean Goldstein Welcome Center: The open-air Jean Goldstein Welcome Center is the new starting point for a visit. It consists of an expansive courtyard with beautiful heritage trees – original from the property, a ticketing pavilion, a welcome gallery where guests have a chance to stop in a permanent exhibit about Selby Gardens’ behind-the-scenes, mission-driven work, and a welcome theater for a short orientation film voiced by global icon Patti Smith, Selby Gardens’ Artist in Residence.

Multiuse Recreational Trail: A key contribution to the community is the new Multiuse Recreational Trail, or MURT, along the perimeter of our Downtown Sarasota campus. The 800-linear-foot MURT gives pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, and others safe access to the campus as well as to the Sarasota Bayfront from neighborhoods south and east of the Gardens. The trail runs the length of the northern and eastern borders of Selby Gardens’ property, along Mound Street/US Highway 41 to the north and South Orange Avenue to the east. The MURT is open for all to use and provides guests with safe and convenient access to our campus and the Sarasota bayfront on foot or by bicycle.

Other Features:Some other important additions include a cutting-edge stormwater management system to divert and clean millions of gallons of water each year before it is returned to Sarasota Bay; off-site road improvements making access easier and safer; and numerous new garden features with more open space such as the beautiful glades garden, a lily pond garden, and a pedestrian-only promenade through the heart of the Gardens comprised of the historic Augusta block that had originally lined Palm Avenue.

The recent capital campaign for the Master Plan raised $57 million and was supported by high-profile philanthropists in our community as well as by many smaller donations. More than 98% of the funds raised came from private donations. This is a great accomplishment undoubtedly

achieved by a dedicated and passionate team. Tell us more about this. On behalf of our Phase One Campaign Chairs and Trustees Jean Weidner Goldstein, Cornelia Matson, and Pauline Wamsler, we are so proud of our successful campaign effort. This community came together to make this project possible – which is truly a gift to our city and beyond. More than 3,500 private gifts were received – ranging from $5 million to one dollar.

When can we expect phases two and three of the Master Plan and what will they include? A timeline for the second and third phases of the Master Plan will be announced soon. The second phase will include a hurricane-resilient greenhouse complex to house Selby Gardens’ world-renowned living collections, and a learning pavilion offering expanded capacity for school programs and enhanced indoor and outdoor classroom space for children and adults. The third phase consists of restoration of the landmark Payne Mansion, which serves as the Museum of Botany & the Arts, unification of all walking paths throughout the campus, and bolstering of sea walls surrounding the property and renovation of docks.

As you celebrate Selby Gardens’ 50th anniversary this year, how do you envision Selby Gardens 50 years from now? All of Selby Gardens’ infrastructure throughout the entire campus will be at the highest level of environmental sustainability and resiliency possible. The institution will also be highly endowed for longterm fiscal sustainability and resiliency.

Being a green champion has been central to your vision for the new Selby Gardens. Your efforts and successes have earned you recognition and awards including receiving a “Climate Champion Award” by the Climate Adaption Center of Southwest Florida. What does this mean to you? I share this recognition with Selby Gardens’ entire team —and it is deeply meaningful to me. We set out to solve some key infrastructure challenges for our institution—and ended up doing so while also becoming an international leader for sustainability and resiliency.

above and beyond LEED certification, Selby Gardens is seeking “Petal” certification through The Living Building Challenge of the International Living Future Institute, meaning Selby Gardens will be the world’s first net positive energy botanical garden complex, creating more energy than we use. With this project, the opportunity presented itself to be innovative and lead the way. The certification takes about one year to complete, and we look forward to sharing our progress.

In 2020, under your leadership, Selby Gardens adopted Historic Spanish Point in Osprey as a companion campus. What do you want our readers to know about HSP and why should a visit to HSP be on their radar? The Historic Spanish Point campus is so special, and encapsulates more than 5,000 years of Florida history. From archaeology to native nature, this bayfront sanctuary is truly a unique experience. We have also implemented our trademarked Living Museum Operating Model there—such as with our current exhibition Clyde Butcher: Nature Through the Lens. And, we now have boat connectivity between our two campuses with our “Set Sail with Selby Gardens” program. So much to see and do!

Selby Gardens offers many educational programs, classes and lectures for both adults and children. Please tell us more about these offerings. Selby Gardens has a wide array of adult classes and programs covering topics like conservation, horticulture, art, botany, and more. We also offer yoga in the Gardens and guided tours of both our Downtown Sarasota and Historic Spanish Point campuses.

Selby Gardens engages more than 10,000 school children and families annually in hands-on learning activities in nature. We offer school tours, as well as welcome local underserved families to our two bayfront sanctuaries through our Family Togetherness and My Garden programs.

What are some of your favorite things to do in town when you are not at the Gardens? The beach is my escape – we do live in paradise!

What’s on your bucket list? To travel to the Maldives!

elegant custom homes changing lives & bettering the community

For Elegant Custom Homes president Mike Bachman and developer and investor Elizabeth Seymour, every day is an opportunity to make the community better, be it through helping reshape downtown Sarasota’s neighborhoods or through their philanthropic and volunteer work.

One organization near and dear to Elizabeth’s heart is Easterseals of Southwest Florida. Easterseals supports babies and toddlers as well as teens and adults with disabilities, including Elizabeth’s own five-year-old son, by helping them live their best lives.

According to Elizabeth, “The beautiful thing about Easterseals is when you go in there, you feel like you’re a part of a family, like you’re in loving arms.” The organization has one campus for babies and toddlers and separate campus for adults with disabilities. It offers programs in early childhood development, K-12 education, adult enrichment, and the Autism Center of Excellence.

Easterseals of Southwest Florida also helps Veterans and first responders through various programs and services. Both Elizabeth and Mike Bachman will be joining other Easterseals supporters at the Abilities Shining Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 6 at Michael’s On East. This is an annual signature fundraising event for Easterseals which showcases the organization’s work.

“What I admire most about Easterseals is their people.  They give so much of themselves to these children every day,” shares Mike. “As adults and parents, we are acutely aware we only have a certain number of hours in each day. We devote it to work, family, friends and to ourselves, and finding a balance where we can have good, effective relationships. Sometimes it means we have fewer relationships and commitments, but they’re deeper and more meaningful. If you can balance and manage your

time well, then you’re going to be a better person when it comes to the different interactions you have, whether it’s personal or professional.”

This way of thinking is the driving factor for Mike, whose company specializes in building custom homes and remodeling. Mike says he’s intentionally kept his company the “right size” to ensure he’s got boots on the ground and involved in every build.

“We are both very focused on building the right home on the right lot,” says Elizabeth, who started working with Elegant Custom homes a few years ago and has several projects in the works.

She chose Mike’s company because of his transparency.  “I trust him.  He has my back and I have his,” she adds. “He understands the vision of what I am hoping to accomplish in each project.”

Mike opens his pricing with clients, so they understand where every dollar goes in the process. “We’ve really focused on quality and the customer experience,” he says. “It’s not only about the quality of construction and the finishes, but in the effectiveness of the communication. The customer needs to understand that building is not a perfect process.  There are a lot of unknowns that occur during a build. If you’ve built a solid relationship, it is easier for the customer to navigate the unexpected but typical twists and turns.”

With a continued demand for new homes in Sarasota, Mike and Elizabeth believe Sarasota will remain a hot market for years to come and continue to be one of the most desired locations in Florida. They understand people want to live close to downtown and the beaches.  This is the starting point when they determine where to invest.

“For Elizabeth and me, it’s not just finding a home that is so old and in disrepair that it makes sense to knock it down and build new. It’s about looking at an emerging area and a one-of-a-kind homesite with existing trees,” says Mike.

“A win for us is to be able to take a homesite that has the 40- to 60-year-old oak trees with Spanish moss peppered in here and there. We can then design a home that fits on the lot, so it looks like it’s been there for 50 years along with those beautiful trees.”

The best example of this work can best be seen at their most recent project at 1701 Hashay Drive located in McClellan Park. Designed by Visbeen Architects, the home incorporates some northern appointments which include a brick exterior, oversized floor to ceiling windows as well as a wine cellar. The older oak trees look over top of the roof proudly welcoming this beautiful new home to their space.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s

GIVING CHALLENGE 2024

A Deep Dive into Impact and Innovation

THE MAGIC BEHIND A 24-HOUR PHILANTHROPIC MARATHON

As the calendar approaches April 9-10, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County is gearing up for its biennial Giving Challenge—a 24-hour online fundraising marathon with a unique twist. Each donation made during this period is generously matched up to $100 by the Patterson Foundation, elevating the impact of every contribution from givers of all ages and means.

68 SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2024

Community Foundation Manager of Nonprofit Services, Aude Monde, succinctly defines the Giving Challenge as a “24-hour community-wide giving day.” Over 700 local nonprofits join forces to raise funds for their unique missions while collectively energizing our area around charitable giving and the importance of the nonprofit community in our daily lives. In 2022, the community raised an impressive $16.1 million from 45,000 donors across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and Desoto counties.Since 2012, througheight challenges, the Giving Challenge has raised more than $75 million in unrestricted funding to support nonprofit organizations.

Monde peels back the curtain, revealing that the success of the Giving Challenge is rooted in meticulous planning. An 18-month preparation process involves thoughtful training and planning guidance to assist nonprofits make the most of this opportunity.

The Patterson Foundation’s generous offer of doubling the impact of every donation up to $100 is the fuel that really ignites the Giving Challenge, Monde said.

MARCH 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE 69

“This turns a $50 donation into $100 over and over again, amplifying the broader community’s collective impact.”

Beyond the online realm, nonprofit organizations have taken the virtual event into real life. There are several popup giving stations planned for this year that are festive, in-person events where donors can meet nonprofit leaders, take part in activities, and make on-the-spot contributions. This part of the Giving Challenge really took off in 2022 in response to an urge by many to reconnect in person, not just virtually. The events offer a tangible connection between donors and the impactful work of nonprofits.

“Pop-up giving stations allow the community to engage with nonprofits on a personal level, forging meaningful connections beyond the digital realm,” Monde explains.

The foundation’s commitment extends beyond the 24hour event. At its core, the Giving Challenge is a capacitybuilding program, ensuring that nonprofits can apply the knowledge gained during the Giving Challenge to operations year ‘round. Through peer learning and

“POP-UP GIVING STATIONS ALLOW THE COMMUNITY TO ENGAGE WITH NONPROFITS ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, FORGING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS BEYOND THE DIGITAL REALM.”

collaborative strategies, nonprofits can leverage shared experiences to bolster their resilience and effectiveness.

Monde emphasizes authenticity as key to a successful Giving Challenge campaign. .

“Be true to who you are as a nonprofit. Effective communication of your mission is key,” advises Monde, stressing that all nonprofits, regardless of size or budget, are are on the same level when they stay true to their identities and effectively communicate their message throughout their campaigns.

As anticipation builds in the weeks leading up to the Giving Challenge, donors and nonprofits alike can find essential information, including dates, times, and locations of pop-up giving stations, on the official Giving Challenge website – givingchallenge.org.

The Giving Challenge isn’t just a moment; it’s a movement, an opportunity for individuals and organizations to join hands in shaping a better, more resilient future for our region.

Mark your calendars, spread the word, and stand ready to make a lasting impact on April 9-10, as Sarasota comes together for the transformative Giving Challenge 2024.

FIFTY YEARS OF FLORIDA STUDIO THEATRE

74 SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2024

This season, Florida Studio Theatre is celebrating half a century as one of Sarasota’s most successful arts organizations. On its five stages, audiences can experience cutting-edge contemporary drama, crowd-pleasing cabaret musicals and inventive improvisational comedy.

From its humble beginnings in 1973 as a nomadic company touring community centers, nursing homes, migrant camps and prisons, to a bustling theater district in itself in downtown Sarasota, FST now has a subscription base of over 40,000 — one of the largest among American regional theater companies. Serving over 230,000 audience members a year, Florida Studio Theatre has a proud past and an even more exciting future.

Richard Hopkins, FST’s producing artistic director and CEO, tells the company’s origin story: “I worked with Jon Spelman, Florida Studio Theatre’s founder, at the Asolo Theatre in Sarasota in the early 1970s. He was the director of education and I was an actor. I left the Asolo and went to Washington, D.C. to start the Palisades Theatre Company there, and Jon started Florida Studio Theatre here in Sarasota.

“When my theater company grew, we moved it from Washington down to St. Petersburg. I had stayed in touch with Jon, directed two or three shows for him over those years and wrote a play that he produced. I left the theater company in St. Pete (now known as American Stage) in 1980. Jon asked me if I would run FST while he went on a year-long sabbatical. I said yes.” After a beat he deadpans, “I’m still waiting for him to come back.”

Before Hopkins stepped in, FST was using the 1915 Sarasota Woman’s Club building as a rehearsal space. He loved the Tudor Revival-style building and convinced generous donors to contribute to a campaign to help FST buy it and renovate it as a theater and offices, establishing a permanent home and resident company. In 1985, FST completed its purchase of the historic building and renamed it the Keating Theatre in 2003 in honor of donors Ed and Elaine Keating.

Rebecca Langford joined FST in 1998. After a two-week stint in the box office she was named marketing director, and became managing director in 2003. Rebecca and Richard were married in 2011.

MARCH 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE 75

As a formidable team, Richard and Rebecca, with support from FST’s board of trustees, its donors and patrons, have spearheaded a lot of changes.

“Throughout our growth over the years, we’ve made very conscious choices,” notes Rebecca. “We tackled one project at a time, growing out of our needs and the needs of our audience. For example, we started in the Keating Theatre, which was about 80 seats to start with, but now it’s 173 — still a small, intimate theater. We made the length of show runs longer and longer as more audience members came. And when we had the choice to build a cabaret, we built an intimate one with 100 seats (the Goldstein Cabaret Theatre).”

As more people flocked to the mainstage productions and the cabaret shows, more choices were made to meet the growing audience demand.

“That’s what drew us across the street to where the Gompertz Theatre and the John C. Court Theatre are now,” says Rebecca. “Our calendar was full, yet more people wanted to come. But at the end of the day, we didn’t want to lose the intimacy. So instead of building bigger we

built more, which is kind of revolutionary. But I think it’s part of our strength and what has made us so unique—it has allowed us to do more diverse work by having more theaters that did different things.”

Richard elaborates on the turning point in the growth of FST. “When we started studying what is now the Gompertz Theatre footprint,” he recalls, “the consultants suggested that we build a 300- to 500-seat theater for our future growth. We looked at other theater companies in America at that time, especially the ones that had built new theaters in the last decade. We found that many of them had built stages that were too big, and they had to put a lot of big sets on those large stages, so it cost a lot more money to produce their shows. Their theaters were too big and they often couldn’t fill them.

“We literally had a design for a 300-seat theater, but we heard stories of the people who were sorry about what they built. And that took us back to repurposing and renovating the existing Gompertz Theatre and building another cabaret theater, and then building a little 100seat experimental theater, Bowne’s Lab, which became our improv theater.”

76 SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2024

In addition to presenting a wide variety of professional productions on its five stages, introducing young people to the world of theater has long been a part of FST’s mission. In 1982, the company launched its education programs for school-age children. Today, these programs —including Write a Play, which helps students earn their own wings as playwrights—have served thousands of children throughout Florida and in other states. Through international exchange programs, FST has also brought the Write a Play program to cities in Israel, Scotland and Russia. In 1983, FST initiated its New Play Festival. Thousands of children and adults have submitted plays for consideration.

On the drawing board now is the company’s most ambitious project to date—the Mulva Arts Plaza, a state-of-the-art, eight-story building. The plaza will include an additional mainstage theater and two more cabaret theaters to allow for more programming, as well as housing for FST guest artists and for Sarasota’s year-round arts workers, and more patron parking. The completion is a few years away.

“It’s our biggest undertaking ever, a $56 million project,” says Richard. “Our expectation is that we’ll break ground

in the third or fourth quarter of 2024, no later than December. “It’s an 18-month buildout for Phase One, which will be parking and housing for our actors. Some of the apartments will be for people who work in the arts and who live here year-round. We will rent those at a cost below market value, because affordable housing is hard to find and artists are usually near the bottom income level. Phase Two will be the new cabaret theaters. Phase Three will be the new mainstage theater.”

How has FST managed to be such a success story for five decades?

“I think it’s important to mention that Dennis McGillicuddy, the president of our board of trustees, has been a huge part of the history of FST,” Rebecca says. “When we talk about the people who have made a difference, he’s certainly one of them. He has led the board to be strategic and to think long-range. Our board is tremendous because they don’t get into the weeds and say we can’t do something. They ask how we can.”

What are the Hopkins’ hopes for the future of Florida Studio Theatre?

“We’ve always been very connected to the audience and committed to our role as a public theater for everybody,” says Rebecca. “And I hope that whatever happens in the future, those core values remain.”

“My hope,” Richard adds, “is that we will continue to evolve in tune and in step with the people we are here to serve. My view is that intimate theater is going to become even more important in the future, because the more time we spend on computers and in high tech, the greater the need for soft touch, face-to-face interaction and the social encounters we have in the theater. There’s nothing better than a high-quality performance in an intimate space with excellent artists. You just can’t beat it.”

STEVEN AND MARJOLAINE TOWNSEND

NOMINATED FOR THEIR PHILANTHROPY SUPPORTING EDUCATION AT BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SARASOTA & DESOTO COUNTIES

Steven and Marjolaine Townsend have been making post-secondary education more accessible since 1999, when they established their first scholarship fund in their home state of Connecticut. Both were the first members of their respective families to attend college, so education has always been important to them. They have adopted the promotion of education as their life goal and enacted that goal by helping as many young people as possible access higher education.

In 2018, The Townsends established the Steven & Marjolaine Scholarship Fund at Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties to empower Club members to pursue their dreams. In partnership with Take Stock in Children, the Townsend Scholars recognized each year can use their scholarship to cover two years of tuition at a Florida college of their choice – from technical or vocational schools to four-year institutions. The students are selected on criteria like being active members of BGCSDC, being enrolled in grades 6-9 at a public Sarasota County school, having demonstrated financial need, and having consistent school attendance and a minimum 2.5 GPA. Once awarded a scholarship, Scholars have access to a school mentor, a Take Stock in Children Success Coach, and various Take Stock in Children events and workshops to prepare them for success beyond high school.

Philanthropically, Dr. Probstfeld has personally donated more than $200,000 to the SCF Foundation to support the College’s mission. Through her leadership, advocacy and responsiveness to our community, Dr. Probstfeld has increased educational opportunities and resources as well as funding to serve those in need.

SHEILA BIRNBAUM

NOMINATED BY CHILDREN FIRST FOR HER EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT OF THE ORGANIZATION’S LITERACY PROGRAMS AND PROGRAMS AT OTHER LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS.

Sheila Birnbaum is an exemplary advocate for literacy and community engagement, dedicating her time and efforts to supporting the development of children, families, and senior citizens in our community.

Sheila’s commitment to community service in Sarasota began in 2015, when she initiated the “Take a Look, Buy a Book” program for Jewish Family and Children’s Services. Over eight years, Sheila successfully managed the program, rallying the community to donate over 24,000 books. In 2023, Sheila got involved with Children First, the exclusive provider of Head Start and Early Head Start services for Sarasota County. This resulted in the “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader” literacy program and book drive, because Sheila believes that reading is the doorway that makes all other learning possible. This initiative, focused on serving children aged birth to five years, aligns with Sheila’s belief and the Children First mission that early exposure to literacy provides children with a crucial “head start” in life. Beyond those served by Children First, the donated books will also be distributed to hospitals and various nonprofit organizations, ensuring that all children can receive the gift of literacy during what can often be a tumultuous time in their young lives. Sheila understands the power of collaboration and has forged partnerships with organizations such as Bank of America, the National Council of Jewish Women, and Goldman Sachs to further promote the importance of literacy. Sheila’s commitment goes beyond literacy support. Her passion is deeply rooted in celebrating children, as evidenced by the personalized labels on each book bearing the “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader” logo, serving as a reminder of the ongoing work in the community and emphasizing the continuous impact on children’s lives. Her unwavering dedication to promoting literacy makes her the ultimate champion for children, families, and seniors across the community.

ALIX MORIN

NOMINATED BY ROBYN BELL OF STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA FOUNDATION FOR HER EXEMPLARY SUPPORT OF EDUCATION AS A BOARD MEMBER, PHILANTHROPIST, VOLUNTEER, AND INFLUENCE.

Alix and her late husband, Mark Morin, established the Mark & Alix Morin Scholarship at SCF Foundation in 2013, which, by itself, may not sound remarkable, but when you realize three important aspects of the scholarships, you start to see how amazing this lady is.

Most people would rank students who apply for their scholarship from highest GPA to lowest. Not Alix. She wants to see the students with lower GPA’s have just as much of a chance to get a scholarship as those who will qualify for many other scholarships due to their high GPAs. Each year, Alix asks the SCF Foundation to send her the applications of those students whose GPA ranges between 2.0 and 2.5. She knows these students will most likely not be offered any other scholarships, and she purposefully selects those students to receive her scholarship.

Most people who establish a scholarship at the SCF Foundation stipulate that the student must be in a particular field of study. Not Alix. Her scholarship is for any student, no matter their career goal or major. To Alix, every student has value and deserves an opportunity for a low-cost, high-quality education. Her mission is to make sure that happens.

Alix certainly contributes funds to her and Mark’s named scholarship, but what makes Alix so remarkable is that she brings in her sphere of influence to also contribute to the scholarship fund, and this connects them to the students and academic programs at State College of Florida. She purchases four tables of eight at the SCF Foundation Annual Scholarship Luncheon, brings all her friends who can attend, and during the event, they donate to the Mark & Alix Scholarship Fund. This remarkable peer-topeer influence makes Alix a special donor who helps expand SCF Foundation’s donor base and helps spread the mission of this incredible institution.

When Alix’s good friend, Dr. Herbie Solomon, passed away in 2017, Mark and Alix helped

84 SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2024

his widow, Brandy Solomon, establish a nursing scholarship in his name at the SCF Foundation, further evidence that Alix’s love and passion for supporting SCF students has a continued reach through her network of friends.

In January 2023, Alix’s sister, Janine Larose, passed away from cancer. Janine, like Alix, was an educator, and to honor her memory, Alix has recently established a 3rd scholarship at SCF Foundation. The Janine Larose Scholarship will be awarded to an SCF student majoring in education.

This past November, as the SCF Foundation was ramping up efforts to raise money during the “Giving Tuesday” event, Alix generously offered to match all donations up to $3,500. We surpassed that amount and Alix was enthusiastic to meet her pledge.

And finally, Alix gives to SCF Foundation and SCF students through her sponsorship at SCF Foundation fundraising events. She has been the underwriter for table centerpieces, student ambassadors, and the pinning ceremony during the Annual Scholarship Luncheon. She has also sponsored SCF Foundation’s Avenues to the Future event and been a champion of the Volunteer Sphere program, both volunteering and connecting SCF Foundation with other volunteers in the community.

She is a philanthropist for education who goes above and beyond, in so many ways, all because she believes in students who attend State College of Florida, Alix Morin does it all, and everyone at SCF Foundation feels so proud and lucky to have her in their lives and the lives of SCF students.

CORPORATE EDUCATION CHAMPION

SARASOTA COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

NOMINATED BY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF SARASOTA COUNTY FOR ITS SUPPORT OF STUDENTS PURSUING A CAREER IN LAW.

Together with the Community Foundation, the Sarasota County Bar Association (SCBA) has administered dozens of scholarships to students aspiring to pursue a career in law.

With the priority of creating access to students of color or those who may not otherwise have access to quality post-secondary law programs, the SCBA, through scholarships with funds held at the Community Foundation, is helping individuals achieve their dreams and, at the same time, helping to diversify the profession to ensure that those serving in the noble field of law represent the public they serve. Additionally, SCBA funds have created and supported programs in elementary, middle, and high schools that teach students concepts of law.

Over the years, SCBA members have contributed to the funds that support these scholarships, and more than $150, 000 has been awarded to students across four scholarship opportunities: the Richard R. Garland Diversity Scholarship Fund, which supports diversity and highly trained legal professionals who plan to practice in Sarasota County; the SCBA Diversity and Inclusion Fund; the Jan Jung Fund to Promote the Study of Law in Sarasota County Schools; and two donor advised funds for the purpose of advancing diversity and equity in the legal profession.

The bar association represents a wide range of attorneys practicing in the area from a wide range of boutique, corporate and independent law firms. You can learn more at sarasotabar.com.

HUMAN SERVICE CHAMPIONS

THE KARP FAMILY

NOMINATED FOR THEIR PHILANTHROPY TO SEVERAL IMPORTANT HUMAN SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING THE CHILD PROTECTION CENTER.

Sheila Miller (VP Philanthropy) and Elizabeth Topp (Capital Campaign Manager) of the Child Protection Center (CPC) describe the Karp Family as local catalysts for change, not only giving their financial resources, but their time, talents, connections, and love. For more than two decades and across four generations, the Karp Family has partnered with the CPC to protect our community’s children.

While they are important supporters of the Child Protection Center, they have been investing in other local nonprofits for decades including Forty Carrots, Children First, Easterseals Southwest Florida, Make-AWish Southern Florida, CAN, Southeastern Guide Dogs, and others.

When the Karp Family moved here from Atlanta in the early 90s, the Sarasota culture of philanthropy quickly became integral for their family, and an aspect of residing here they adored. Family patriarch Arthur S. Karp started the foundation in 1992 as The Arthur S. Karp Family Foundation, and since, the family has managed its assets and invested in numerous organizations for almost 34 years. His wife Susan was introduced to CPC by another CPC champion, Graci McGillicuddy, and Susan immediately understood the importance of the work being done at CPC. In fact, CPC was the first organization The Arthur S. Karp Family Foundation partnered with to change lives.

Second generation leaders Richard and Tammy Karp have continued the legacy and raised their daughters with philanthropy as a core value of their family. Taylor Karp-Teymuri, eldest of the third generation, shares that it is such a large part of her life and although the foundation is the vessel for their contributions, the desire to give back and make an impact is the fuel to it all. A truly special aspect of this family is their comprehensive philanthropy.

Sarah Karp-Renkliyuz, sister of Taylor, enjoys the hands-on and servicebased approach that mom and dad (Tammy and Richard) showed her growing up; the importance of action and volunteerism are just as important as financial support. This has always been an aspect of philanthropy Sarah was partial to, and in recent years she has become more involved with Taylor’s favorite: social events and community engagements. Together they are emerging recipients of this family legacy as Tammy passes the torch, like Susan once did for her.

Sarah expressed how impactful her first tour of CPC was, noting its Pillar of Hope and her admiration for the butterfly’s significance. “Our kids are in a cocoon not knowing where to go or find help, but CPC gives them the tools to become that butterfly and spread their wings to fly,” she shares. Sarah and Taylor are also members of CPC’s Butterfly Guild, a young professional advocacy group supporting our mission and connecting the next generation to philanthropy. As Richard shares with us when commenting on the foundation for his passions, “It’s all about the next generation.”

Two decades and counting, the family can be seen expressing their passion for CPC’s important work in many ways. Tammy is a current board member, and all three women volunteer on other committees. Tammy, Taylor, and Sarah will chair CPC’s 11th Annual Blue Ties and Butterflies Gala on April 10, 2024, an event Tammy and the family foundation have been a part of since its inauguration.

efforts to approximately 10,000 students around the country. Ironically, the pandemic has expanded her reach and impact by making it possible to use Zoom as a teaching tool. Additionally, the national association of science teachers has adopted some of her work as required curriculum.

Recently, when leading a group of elementary students on a field trip on the Myakka walkway, they discovered an insect previously unknown to the scientific community!

Her work has been widely recognized and she has received the designation of National Geographic Explorer. Dr. Lowman was the recipient of the 2023 annual award of the Explorers Club in New York, and, internationally, was just awarded the 2023 Tällberg-SNF-Eliasson Global Leadership Prize by the Tällberg Foundation. These many honors (among others) have given her the means to continue her volunteer work.

Examples of her volunteer work are her personal establishment and financing of a summer camp for under-served students, as well as devising the mechanical means for mobility-challenged youth and adults to reach tree canopies and discover the magic that happens there.

Her volunteer and philanthropic contributions are many, both locally and globally, and she is an invaluable asset to our community.

Roger and Judy were in the audience. He raised his hand and asked how he could give us money and what Wingspan was doing next. His inquiries began a beautiful friendship with KT, Roger, and his wife Judy. They offered significant financial support for Wingspan Productions and Wingspan’s subsequent films about bullying, mental health, young adults, first responders, and fentanyl overdoses.

Wingspan’s films have been distributed all over the US and abroad, winning numerous awards, and through it all, KT shares that Roger has been there as a friend, wise counsel, and generous philanthropist. KT believes that one person can make a tremendous difference in the world, and she, along with everyone at Wingspan Productions, has the utmost gratitude for Roger and Judy Sandt.

VOLUNTEER CHAMPIONS

THE FOOD DISTRIBUTION VOLUNTEERS AT SECOND CHANCE LAST OPPORTUNITY

NOMINATED BY SCLO’S FOUNDER AND CEO APRIL GLASCO FOR THEIR DEDICATION GENEROSITY HELPING OTHERS.

Second Chance-Last Opportunity (SCLO) is a community-based non-profit grassroots organization offering life management skills classes to at-risk teens and their low income and/or homeless families since 1995. SCLO clients often face multiple health, social and economic challenges, and SCLO’s approach is both holistic and empowering. SCLO classes provide skills and strategies for success, and it also provides counseling, health education, youth programs, food distributions, and shelter referrals.

SCLO Founder and CEO April Glasco nominated the organization’s food distribution volunteers, who along with their teams, provide a vital service to those who need it most.

Every Monday through Thursday, these volunteers bring unsold baked goods donated by Longboat Key Publix, groceries donated by Longboat Key residents, sandwiches, and often monetary contributions for the people SCLO serves. These deliveries have been happening since April of 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic. Temple Beth Israel has also been involved in the food distribution and as volunteers at SCLO events.

SCLO is always looking for individuals and groups to help the organization improve the lives of at-risk teens, families, and individuals. There are many ways you can help—whether on an ad hoc basis at one of SCLO’s special community events or in an ongoing capacity on a committee or in the office.

Inspired Expression

The Sarasota Ballet’s Final Two Programs of the Season Showcase Dance Artistry

When dancers take the stage for Portraits of Expression, Program 6 in Sarasota Ballet’s 2023-2024 season, they will begin with a literal gem of ballet repertoire — George Balanchine’s Emeralds. The first segment of the acclaimed choreographer’s ballet Jewels, Emeralds is set to music by Gabriel Fauré and staged by Sandra Jennings.

The Sarasota Ballet performed the full-length ballet Jewels in 2016. In this program, Emeralds is followed by Las Hermanas (The Sisters), with choreography by Sir Kenneth MacMillan, music by Frank Martin and staged by Margaret Barbieri, The Sarasota Ballet’s assistant director. The mood then shifts to the jazz-infused ballet Who Cares?, another Balanchine-choreographed work set to the music of George Gershwin.

“Emeralds is just one of the most absolutely beautiful ballets,” says The Sarasota Ballet Director Iain Webb. “It’s one that all ballerinas want to do. The middle section of the program, Las Hermanas, it’s based on the play The House of Bernarda Alba by Federico Garcia-Lorca. It’s a masterpiece, but it’s very challenging for the performers

because it requires very intense acting — they have to convey a wide range of emotions through dance. We finish Program 6 with Who Cares?, which is all Gershwin, with almost our full company on stage.”

Webb describes Emeralds as “sophisticated; like a fine perfume.” He says he deliberately contrasted the glamour of the ballet with the high drama of Las Hermanas, and notes that Barbieri is the perfect person to stage this production.

MARCH 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE 97
Jennifer Hackbarth AnnaPellegrino

“Las Hermanas was originally performed by the Stuttgart Ballet in 1963,” he notes. “When it was brought to The Royal Ballet in 1971, Margaret was in original cast as the Youngest Sister – one of the principal roles. Same set, same everything. She’s been there right from the beginning with it, so she has firsthand knowledge of the story. When a character looks at someone, Margaret remembers the look that dancer got back in return.

“I’m personally grateful for Lady MacMillan (widow of choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan, who died in 1992) to say we can do it and to give it to Margaret to stage. That says a lot for our company, our dancers and Margaret herself.”

Anna Pellegrino, a soloist who trained with at the Eastern Connecticut Ballet and joined The Sarasota Ballet in 2018, portrays one of the five sisters in Las Hermanas. She’s up for the challenge, in part because she was in the cast of the ballet in the company’s 2019-2020 season—but as a different sister than the one she portrays in this production.

How does she express the deep emotions of Las Hermanas, which explores themes of maternal domination and sisterly jealousy?

“You have to do it all without words,” Pellegrino explains. “With dancing, you really have to think, ‘If my wrist is this way versus this way, what is that saying?’ We might get direction to use a certain hand gesture, but as a dancer you have to ask yourself, ‘What is that hand saying?’ Because I feel like if there’s not an intention behind it, then what you’re trying to portray doesn’t read to the other characters on stage or to the audience.”

The pulsing energy of New York City is on display in Who Cares?. The ballet is set to many of Gershwin’s most popular songs, including Strike Up the Band, Sweet and Lowdown, Lady Be Good, Embraceable You, I Got Rhythm and many more. Think Fred Astaire (one of Balanchine’s favorite dancers), and you can picture the buoyant, exhilarating spirit of the work.

Program 7, Inspirations, is the last of the season. It opens with The American , created by Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheedon and staged by Margaret Barbieri. The music is by Antonin Dvořák, a Czech composer whose compositions, notably his New World Symphony, often weave in themes from American folk tunes, spirituals and other indigenous music.

Jennifer Hackbarth, a principal dancer with the company, says Inspirations is “a very diverse program, like all of the

wonderful programs we do here. As an artist, I’m very excited to challenge myself with a lot of variety. Triple bills are always fun because you get to challenge yourself and explore the artistry and the different aspects of the dance and the music.”

Hackbarth learned her craft at the Milwaukee Ballet School, the John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart, Germany, and the School of American Ballet in New York City, before joining the New York City Ballet. She spent six seasons with the Semperoper Ballet in Dresden, Germany.

“At that point I felt it was time to make a change and move back to America,” explains Hackbarth. “So I thought about what would be the best place to go. I have so many things that I want to do. As a dancer, I thought, ‘Where can I get everything?’ And there was no question of where to go. I ended up here at The Sarasota Ballet, because of the variety of pieces they do.”

Of The American, Webb says, “It’s a great joy for me to enjoy watching and listening to Margaret stage this ballet. “Christopher Wheedon is one of the most important choreographers of today. You might ask, ‘How did you get him?’ The short answer is that when Christopher was a young dancer, he had just joined The Royal Ballet and Margaret was director of the Classical Graduate Programme at London Studio Center. I said, ‘There’s this young kid in The Royal Ballet company and he’s got a lot of talent, not just for dancing but also for choreography.’

“Margaret contacted Christopher straight away and his first professional commission work was done for her. He later gave her permission to stage The American, so that’s a nice full circle. And we’ve got such a beautiful range of talented dancers in the piece. I think all those elements are going to combine to bring something very special to the stage.”

Lyric Pieces , the middle ballet of Program 7, is choreographed by Jessica Lang to solo piano music by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Lang, a director and choreographer based in New York City, is currently Artist in Residence at The Sarasota Ballet.

“I’d been talking to Jessica for a long time about working with the company,” says Webb. “Last season she created one of her best works for us, Shades of Spring. I had been looking to do Lyric Pieces with her, and now I’ve brought it into the second season of her working with us. It’s a great piece.”

Sinfonietta is the final piece in Program 7, with choreography by Sir Frederick Ashton, music by Sir Malcolm Williamson and staged by Margaret Barbieri. The ballet includes Toccata , the first segment that ushers in some precise and fancy footwork; Elegy, a reflective piece spotlighting a female soloist and a group of male partners; and Tarantella, named after an Italian folk dance that’s said to be inspired by the frenetic movements of a person bitten by a tarantula.

Reflecting on Programs 6 and 7, Webb says, “I think these last two programs of the season are going to create a real buzz. They have so much energy; they’re not to be missed. The company loves them, and the audience will, too.”

ORIGINALS

CELEBRATES 20 YEARS and its

17th Annual Forks & Corks

Food and Wine Festival

Imagine having an all-access pass to taste over 350 awardwinning wines from all over the world and pairing them with a wide variety of mouth-watering foods from over 40 local independently owned restaurants. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, it’s not.

The 17th Annual Forks & Corks Food and Wine Festival Grand Tasting recently took place at the world-renowned John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art on January 28, 2024. Nearly 1,800 people converged on the museum’s breathtaking courtyard to give their taste buds a ride and support the area’s best and most unique culinary innovations.

This incredible annual event is hosted by Sarasota-Manatee Originals, a not-for-profit organization that serves as a collaboration hub for independently owned local restaurant owners to support each other and grow their businesses together. The organization, also referred to as the “Originals,” was formed when members from the Sarasota and Manatee area’s independent restaurant community came together to unite for shared success and identify our region as a culinary destination. Today, over 60 restaurants from the tip of Anna Maria Island to the southern beaches of Venice proudly call themselves members of the Originals. The widely popular Forks & Corks Festival debuted in 2008, just a few years after the Sarasota Manatee Originals was born.

“One of the things we do as an organization to promote our members, is provide them with many opportunities to literally get them and their food in front of people - their potential guests,” said Liza Kubik, who handles marketing and communications for the Originals. “Forks & Corks was designed as a world-class platform where we can showcase our member’s talents in the best possible way.”

The Grand Tasting is just one of several events taking place in the five-day Forks & Corks Festival. Other events include an online food and wine auction, private food and wine pairing dinners hosted inside the organization’s Member Restaurants, retail tastings, wine classes taught by industry experts, and much more.

This year, over 4,000 people attended the various events at Forks & Corks. Winemakers from 14 different countries and some of the most prestigious wineries in the world flew in for the festival. This included 18 individual winemaker dinners hosted across the two counties in the Originals’ member restaurants. Over 250 people attended wine seminars led by these winemakers and other industry experts. These classes present a rare opportunity to learn about wine from those instrumental in crafting them and how to properly pair each wine with food.

“We focus on the fact that this festival celebrates the expertise of our local chefs. And then the entire thing is supported by this roster of renowned international winemakers. Which really speaks to the festival’s allure, and the destination’s undeniable appeal,” says Kubik.

In addition to Forks & Corks, the Originals host other various events and auctions to raise funds for the organization and promote their Members. The next event, Set the Bar, is a cocktail competition where guests can sample innovative and delicious drinks made by our area’s best bartenders. Set the Bar will highlight accomplished mixologists representing establishments from the Originals’ member restaurants. The winning libations will be decided by an expert panel, as well as event attendees, on flavor, appearance, presentation, and imagination. In addition to the sampling, guests at Set the Bar will enjoy live entertainment, an exciting auction benefiting Children First, and light bites from the Member Restaurants. This event takes place April 14, 2024 from 4-7 p.m. at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.

Taste of the Bay, which last was held on October 22, 2023, is another tasting event hosted by the Originals that is like the Grand Tasting event of Forks & Corks. On a slightly smaller scale, this lovely event at The Oval at The Bay Sarasota featured live music and dishes from some of the best restaurants in Sarasota. The event coincided with the first anniversary of The Bay public park alongside Sarasota Bay. Taste of the Bay will shine again in 2024, so stay tuned.

104 SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2024

The Originals also work directly with ABC7’s Suncoast View, an hour-long talk show hosted at 9 a.m. every weekday, to spotlight local restaurant chefs and their most exciting dishes. Each Wednesday morning, a chef from one of the Originals’ Member Restaurants joins the program in a studio kitchen and makes a scrumptious meal paired with the perfect wines. The segment, called Wine Down Wednesday, is both educational and fun and meant to inspire viewers to venture out to these local establishments.

The purpose and mission of the Originals - promoting and supporting independent, locally owned restaurants in Sarasota and Manatee Counties - has never been more important and goes way beyond events they host. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, restaurants have been experiencing very trying times of change. Cost of product has been rapidly rising, as well as the needs of the average customer. The need for professional marketing and social media has never been greater.

One of the key driving forces behind the Originals and Forks & Corks is Michael Klauber, a founding member and founding board president of the Originals, and owner of several businesses in the area, including the iconic Michael’s on East. Klauber’s connections in the food and wine industry span the globe have helped to elevate the Forks & Corks event to one of the most recognized food and wine festivals in the Southeast United States.

“I think the Originals are a big part of the backbone of our community when it comes to the hospitality industry and the dining scene. We believe there is a great culinary heritage in our region that we are all working hard to preserve and celebrate. Forks & Corks is a celebration of all of our great local restaurants partnering with some of the greatest wineries in the world and I love seeing our whole community out there enjoying it,” says Klauber.

The Originals use funds raised from their various events and donations to continue their marketing of their members and the entire local community of restaurants. Through advocacy, marketing and educational initiatives, the organization helps these businesses thrive and contribute to the unique culinary identity of the region. If you visit their website, www.eatlikealocal.com, you can review a list of all member restaurants, browse the blog, request a local dining guide, and sign up for their newsletter for news about local restaurants and events. This is the best way to stay up to date on next year’s Forks & Corks Food and Wine Festival and other special events to make sure you get tickets before they sell out.

education matters

MOTE MARINE SETS SAIL TOWARD NEW SCIENCE EDUCATIONAL AQUARIUM

In the fall of 2020, Mote Marine Laboratory broke ground on the construction of its new, state-of-theart Science Education Aquarium located adjacent to Nathan Benderson Park near University Town Center in Sarasota. This project is a rebirth of its current aquarium located on Lido Key.

The new, centralized location will allow them to expand educational efforts and continue to provide free resources and experiences to Manatee and Sarasota county public schools. It is expected to open to the public this winter.

HISTORY OF MOTE IN SARASOTA

Mote has a rich and storied history in Sarasota before eventually becoming the global research and education institute it is today. The original founder, Dr. Eugenie Clark, became vastly interested in sharks and marine life at a very young age after visiting a local aquarium. In 1955, she founded a small one-room laboratory to conduct research. Little did she know, that tiny laboratory

would eventually grow to now include over 25 diverse marine research programs that have made significant impacts across the globe, as well as one of the largest public aquariums in Florida.

Today, Mote is an independent, nonprofit marine research institution of world-class marine scientists committed to the belief that the conservation and sustainable use of our oceans begins with research and education.

This new Science Education Aquarium (SEA) will transform Mote’s ability to provide informal science education and enhanced levels of ocean literacy to much larger and more diverse populations from around the world. Mote SEA will serve as a regional hub for enhancing STEM skills and education through a marine science lens, with the aim of inspiring every student in our community from kindergarten through high school, with the primary concept of “Oceans for All.”

106 SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2024
• insider •

“One of our main focuses here is education. This new aquarium will be largely focused on educating the public and students not only about the impacts of Mote Research, but about Marine Science in general and helping people get inspired and interested in the field. Hopefully we inspire more people to be the next Eugenie Clark,” says Kaitlyn Fusco, Marketing and Public Relations Manager at Mote.

In its current operation, Mote’s education programs reach an audience of over 60,000. This includes a range of students arriving through field trip programs across the region, as well as programs geared toward families and programs specifically designed for adults and post-education. There’s also a full digital learning studio through their website to reach audiences around the world. However, its current location limits the possibilities for learning and reaching larger audiences.

“We get kids all the time that have never come over the Ringling bridge to our current facility,” says Aly Busse, Associate Vice President for Education at Mote. “This is an amazing place for a research laboratory, not a great place for a public aquarium because it’s really inaccessible. This new location will be much more accessible for a wider number of students and families.”

WHAT TO EXPECT AT MOTE SEA

When you first walk into the new facility next year, you’ll immediately be greeted with three different interactive STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teaching laboratories that will host educational programming available to all local schools. By offering these free experiences to students, it ensures each child in the area has the chance to discover

marine science and technology up close and personal. Complimentary family passes will be offered to all Title-1 students in Sarasota and Manatee Counties and their families so that entrance prices are not a barrier to prevent young students from exploring and learning.

Mote SEA will also include four workforce development laboratories to provide upper-level students, such as high school or college students, opportunities to work alongside Mote scientists and get hands-on working experience regarding ongoing research projects. Some of these projects include coral restoration, aquaculture, veterinary science, and conservation science.

“We really want younger students to become familiar with STEM skills and feel a sense of belonging in marine science,” says Dr. Kristen Ranges, Mote SEA Education Coordinator. “Our goal is to spark interest in these kids and have them come back for camps, join their schools’ science clubs, and to understand that this is a career field with a variety of opportunities for them now and in the future. We want them to be able to see and work with scientists to really understand what a career in marine science research and other related STEM professions involve.”

Learning about different marine wildlife and their ecosystems is a driving focus for students involved in these educational programs and field trips. The new aquarium will feature penguins for the first time at Mote, a stunning array of sharks, Atlantic and Pacific coral reef species, manatees, and much more throughout over one million gallons of space. These exhibits provide glimpses of the deep sea and other remote habitats, including Mote research sites from around the world.

EXPECTED IMPACT

Mote SEA is being developed on about 12 acres in the Sarasota Countyowned Nathan Benderson Park. The new facility will be easily viewable by people traveling on I-75, which equates to approximately 43 million drivers annually. This site will also double the number of residents and visitors within an hour’s drive of the aquarium.

108 SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2024
• insider •

The economic impact of Mote SEA will be significant. The construction of the facility is expected to produce $280 million in direct and indirect expenditures. Once completed, Mote SEA will provide about 260 employment opportunities and approximately $28 million annually in economic benefits for the state of Florida. The new aquarium is expected to see about 700,000 visitors, which is nearly double the current rate on Lido Key. This includes approximately 70,000 students with free access to its school programs annually.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

While the new educational programs will not go into effect until next year, there are still plenty of things to do now at the current aquarium. Shark Pups & Grownups is an early childhood STEM program for kids ages 2-5 that includes classes for sign language, science tool exploration, role play, games, and a take-home craft. Kids attend these classes with an adult or parent and get hands-on experience to inspire them at a young age. Other programs for kids aged 6+ to experience with their family include Dip Netting in the Bay, Seashore SEAfari, Animal Encounter, and online virtual resources.

There are also several programs and activities geared toward teens and pre-teens such as day camps, summer camps, homeschool days, and programs directly associated with their schools. A wide variety of internships are available for college students and adults.

and a full list of available educational opportunities, please visit www.Mote.org/education.

SLEEP WELL. LIVE WELL.

When Sandy Rodriguez rolls out of bed each morning, he’s grateful for another day to give others a healthy night’s sleep through his company, Unlimited Comfort Mattress Factory, established in Sarasota since 2005.

He had visited his parents who lived in Sarasota and was impressed by the polite way in which other people treated him.

“It reminded me of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where I grew up,” he adds.

Rodriguez treats his customers with similar respect. His nickname is ‘the man of your dreams’ because he gives customers that which they cannot find elsewhere.

“I have a passion for what I do,” he says. “We are very good with pricing and service.”

What separates Unlimited Comfort Mattress Factory from others is it is family-owned and operated with mattresses custommade onsite, including those for RVs and boats.

Rodriguez has been in the mattress industry for 17 years. He is a third-generation furniture builder, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather from Cuba. Rodriguez’ son Vian is the fourth generation in the business, heading up delivery and set-up.

Recently, a customer wanted a custom-made mattress for an RV. She likes a soft mattress; her husband preferred a firm mattress. He has asthma. The fumes from the chemicals used in the foam mattress on which they slept presented him with breathing problems and was too hot.

Unlimited Comfort Mattress Factory created an eco-friendly custom mattress giving each their desired comfort level. They told Rodriguez they had been to 10 different places and this had been the first time their wishes were accommodated.

When mattresses were first made, they had coils and foam for comfort and lasted 20 years, says Rodriguez.

“Then you had all of this synthetic stuff with memory foam and fake foam,” he adds. “Foam is killing the industry because it’s full of toxic chemicals. They sleep hot, sag in the middle and mattress stores want the customer to replace those beds every five years.”

Unlimited Comfort Mattress Factory customers are welcomed to visit the showroom and watch the beds being made. Mattresses are warrantied for 15 years.

Rodriguez notes one customer had bought a number 1 mattress – that being the most firm with number 8 being the softest – and five years later, she returned to tell him she had a hip replacement done and her comfort level had changed. He changed the comfort level of her mattress to a 5 at no cost.

Rodriguez also sells frames and adjustable power beds, inspired by the design of hospital beds.

“One of my slogans is when you sleep better at night, we do too,” Rodriguez says. “I feel great because there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t help somebody.”

Such as the 97-year-old woman who told her sister how she could “go to heaven in this happy mattress from the man of her dreams”, he says. “She looked forward to going to bed at night because she was so comfortable in that bed I made for her. Things like that put a smile on my face every day because I’m making a difference.”

Another woman had panicked because her husband got sick and needed the adjustable base. Their bed’s headboard has storage underneath with drawers. Everywhere she went, she was told she would have to buy another frame as the current one wouldn’t work.

Rodriguez, who did carpentry in his youth, says “we took it apart, redid it and she was a happy camper. I love doing things for other people when nobody else cares. They take your money and say, ‘see you later.’ So sad.” CALL US TODAY:

meet the artist t ed r iederer

A “one-time refugee from punk and sometime band member,” Ted Riederer melds his musical passion into art. Armed with painting supplies, electric guitars, amplifiers, record players, photography equipment, a vinyl record lathe, and long-stemmed roses, he marries visual and audio concepts into stunning displays of contemporary art. Having ambled artistically from the Americas to the Antipodes, Riederer’s work has been shown nationally and internationally including exhibitions at PS1, Prospect 1.5, Goff and Rosenthal Berlin, Marianne Boesky Gallery, Context Gallery (Derry, Ireland), the Liverpool Biennial, and the Dhaka Arts Center (Bangladesh) to name a few.

One of artist Ted Riederer’s most renowned works which has traveled globally, the Never Records project, will be part of an upcoming exhibition at Sarasota Art Museum. At its core, Never Records celebrates vinyl recordings as the gold standard in the world of recorded music. Riederer pairs vinyl’s implicit value with his version of the gift economy, resulting in a pop-up recording studio set up in an exhibition space, where local musicians or sound artists make appointments to come in, record a song, and then watch as their performance gets cut into a vinyl record—actually two records, as one stays behind within the growing library of records that Riederer and Never Records have produced over the years.

The Never Records project has traveled from New York, to Liverpool, to Derry, to New Orleans, to Texas, to Amman, to Kansas City, to London, to The Brooklyn Academy of Music, and now to Sarasota.

As one of the 10 artists featured in Sarasota Art Museum’s upcoming exhibition Impact: Contemporary Artists at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, where Hermitage alumni explore how their art reflects current cultural and social climates and challenges, Ted Riederer invites the community to come together for a hands-on experience of making their own vinyl records in the Never Records pop-up music studio.

On view from March 10–July 7, visitors can see Ted Riederer’s works inperson at Impact: Contemporary Artists at the Hermitage Artist Retreat at Sarasota Art Museum.

“Impact: Contemporary Artists at the Hermitage Artist Retreat” is organized by Sarasota Art Museum in collaboration with the Hermitage Artist Retreat and curated by Dan Cameron, independent curator.
