ast summer, when we decided to do a Kickstarter campaign, there were no guarantees it would be funded. But after sixty days of spreading the good news about how the film and entertainment industry is positively affecting Louisiana, the Here’s My $2 campaign had raised $55,818 to fund an economic impact study. You can now read that study in its entirety at lfea.org. We also got to make a movie. We just finished principle photography on Creatures of God, a new short film directed by Sandy Parker. Over the course of a week, it was incredible to see the local film community come together to make this project, from experienced camera and sound professionals offering their time to vehicle and equipment rental donations. One day was pouring rain and the next was brutal

heat, but everyone was in high spirits throughout. Once finished, it will be a great example of indigenous filmmaking in Louisiana. The legislative session continues through June. For updates and info on how you can participate in LFEA’s efforts to inform state lawmakers of how the film industry is helping Louisiana’s economy, visit lfea.org. And if your business has been impacted by the film industry, consider becoming a member of LFEA. And thanks for your early support on another new venture. We’re eleven episodes and a month into producing our new podcast and The SceneCast is going great. Check it out at thescenecast.com.

PICKS AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON What will be this summer’s biggest blockbuster? Avengers: Age of Ultron is the second installment of Marvel’s Avengers series and it looks to be back with action, stars, evil villains and exceptional team chemistry. Last time, that meant box office records and we’re expecting more of the same from the reunion of director Joss Whedon with his cast of superstars. The A-list of super humans includes Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and let’s not forget the dark horse MVP of the Avenger squad, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. As a bonus to the reunion in the film itself, it’s been a pleasure watching the cast on the promotional circuit. The group genuinely seems to like each other and that rapport has shown through on every late night stop and red carpet event. The Avengers have to assemble when Ultron, one of Tony Stark’s creations, goes rogue. The super robot (who might be something more?) threatens the planet and must be dealt with. You can fly with the Avengers in IMAX on May 1.

HBO’s new film will star Selma lynchpin David Oyelowo. Here, the breakout actor plays a war veteran who slowly loses his mind and we get to watch the deterioration firsthand. The drama shows a man who has lost his grip on self awareness and self control. His embattled mind unravels at the anxious thought of a visit from his friend. Nightingale is directed by Elliot Lester (Blitz) from a screenplay written by first-time writer Frederick Mensch. Oyelowo is essentially a one-man show and his mind is an endless locomotive on a path to destruction. Lester does a masterful job highlighting emotions with imagery and takes us to the darkest pastures of the mind. Lester ran a tight ship on a shoot that only lasted sixteen days. Nightingale is set premiere May 29 on HBO. So go sign up now for that oh-so-awesome HBO Now thirty-day free trial. 6 | April 2014

Created by Chad Hodge (The Playboy Club), Wayward Pines is set in small town Idaho. This mystery thriller is based on the novel Pines by Blake Crouch. Matt Dillon stars as a Secret Service agent named Ethan Burke, who finds himself dropped in a picture perfect town where white picket fences and perfectly manicured lawns are abundant. Burke is in search of two federal agents who have gone missing. It doesn’t take long for Ethan Burke to notice that beneath this town’s easy going ways lies torture and deceit. Terrence Howard plays the almighty Sheriff Pope and warns Burke that above all, the town dictates its citizen’s livelihood for better or for worse. The cast is star studded and includes the likes of Carla Gugino (Entourage), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight’s Tale), Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers), Melissa Leo (Treme) and Terrence Howard (Crash). M. Night Shyamalan directs the series premiere and if anyone can formulate a psychological thriller using an eerie small town, it’s Shyamalan. Let’s just hope he sticks the landing. Wayward Pines’ ten episode first season premieres on Fox on May 14.

ans of Ryan Murphy’s previous creations Glee and American Horror Story have something new to look forward to in Scream Queens, the new Fox show that brings horror to a small college campus. The much anticipated comedy-horror anthology series will premiere this fall, roughly around the same time as American Horror Story: Hotel. While the new show films on location in New Orleans, Louisiana, let’s look at what we know (or at least, what we think we know) about Ryan Murphy’s latest. Scream Queens’ boasts a star-studded cast, including one of the original scream queens, Jamie Lee Curtis, who starred in director John Carpenter’s history-making horror flick Halloween. She’s joined by American Horror Story’s Emma Roberts, Glee alum Lea Michele, Zombieland’s Abigail Breslin, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, Keke Palmer, Nashville’s Oliver Hudson, Saturday Night Live’s Nasim Pedrad, Reno 911’s Niecy Nash and American Horror Story newcomer Skyler Samuels. First looks at the show have been released and they look awesome. The short video teasers that have aired on Fox are memorable, featuring Roberts, Palmer and other cast members sporting some co-ed spunk, followed by a flash of horror. Both ladies are chewing gum. When they blow an impossibly large bubble, a demon face appears in the pink. Set at the fictitious Wallace University, Scream Queens will take place at the world’s meanest sorority, where everyone has a motive to kill.“It opens in a flashback to 1995 at the sorority where something horrible happens. It’s a mystery that goes unsolved,” Murphy revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Flash forward twenty years to today, and it looks like someone is out for revenge. Something horrible happened to a pledge and on the anniversary of that crime, someone is out for vengeance.” The show itself will follow the same anthology-style structure as American Horror Story, but with a few twists. Inspired by slasher films from the 80s and 90s, Murphy plans on having the survivors of this season move onto the next one. “Whoever survives—and there will be people who will survive— they will go on next season to a new location and a new terror,” Murphy said to EW. “Unlike Horror Story, which completely reboots, this has some of the continuity in that some of the characters and some of the relationships continue into a new world.” Along with Murphy’s exclusive interview, EW included some exclusive photos from Scream Queens. You can read the entire interview and check out the photos here on ew.com. “Every episode someone is going. It’s always somebody you least suspect or expect,” said Murphy. “The killer is on a reign of 8 | April 2014

terror. It’s very much like ‘Ten Little Indians.’ There’s a real tunein factor because it’s like, who’s going to be picked off this week? And also who is the killer? Every episode, you get clues as to who the killer is going to be and then all of these clues accumulate.” The fun part about the killer? He’s the devil you’ve been seeing in the teasers. “Wallace University’s mascot is the Red Devil,” Murphy said. “Somebody has stolen the Red Devil costume and that’s what he or she wears when they commit the crimes. We spent five months working on the prototype for that devil outfit. I’m really happy with it. He or she uses everything [as weapons].” “Tonally, it’s something different than we’ve seen on network television,” Nashville actor Oliver Hudson recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “I read it and was curious as to how Fox was going to allow

some of the stuff on, because it was very much pushing the envelope of what is acceptable network television, which I love, and that’s, like, standard Ryan. He’s definitely not afraid.” Hudson will appear in Scream Queens as a character named Rodrigo. The actor is already playing Jeff Fordham on Nashville, but when he got the call to play a ‘father’ on Scream Queens, he couldn’t say no. “I love the fact that I was a father because I’ve never played a dad and I have three kids,” Hudson said to THR. “Now I get to do something a little softer and more relatable for me. But at the same time, this guy has a real edge and he has got a lot of secrets. There is an intensity about him that will ultimately come out, and there’s a mystery around this person.” “Every week, it’s really like a murder mystery. Who’s going to get knocked off? And who’s the killer? And not until the last episode do you find out who it is,” Murphy teased. “Everybody has the motivation to be that killer.” Murphy also recently revealed that each week, at least one character will be getting the axe. For Glee fans, it will be hard to believe that Lea Michele could be capable of killing more than a song. Although details on her character are scarce, Michele has described that her character as being entirely different from Broadway-belting, overachieving Rachel Berry, the character Glee fans have come to love. 10 | April 2014

“I’ll tell you this,” Michele told USA Today. “A lot of people working on Scream Queens are our crew from Glee. When I went on my first day, no one even recognized me. This is like my Charlize Theron in Monster moment.” Michele’s character is Hester, who’s known as “Neckbrace” because of her not-so-fab neckwear. She “wants everything Chanel (Emma Roberts) has and will do anything to get it,” Murphy said. “We won’t let her put on any makeup and she wears these horrible 1995 tracksuits. But there’s a great turn that happens half-way through the season with that character.” You can read more on Michele’s character in this first look from Entertainment Weekly. Emma Roberts loves Michele’s character. “I can’t look at Lea in a scene because she makes me laugh,” admits Roberts. “She’s so funny. We’ll be doing a scene where I’ll be giving everyone my death glare and I’ll have to skip Lea because I’ll start cracking up. It’s been really fun to work with her because I was such a fan of Glee. Her and I have really hit it off.” After her first bubble gum-popping teaser, which revealed the sorority house and the red devil, Emma Roberts new character returned for another teaser dubbed “Chanel Knife.” In it, she does her makeup by looking at her reflection in a large butcher knife. Roberts teased that her character Chanel is, “Even better than Madison Montgomery.” Montgomery is Roberts’ much loved

character from American Horror Story: Coven, which also shot in New Orleans. Robert’s character is the president of Kappa Sorority, who’s very funny and very ruthless. “All her life all she’s wanted to do is be president of Kappa and have this great boyfriend and rule the roost,” said Murphy. “She’s very fashionable and very ruthless.” The costumes will almost certainly be killer. The teasers give off a Heathers and Mean Girls vibe and the costume design is a big part of that. More than just a cameo, Jamie Lee Curtis will play a major part in the upcoming first season. “Jamie Lee plays the dean of the school, who has had it up to here with these bitches in the sorority,” Murphy said to EW. “She’s the dean of students who wants to change the system. She’s a leader and a crusader and might have to shutdown the system by literally killing them all. She’s just had it.” Jamie Lee Curtis’s character will have an admiration for Keke Palmer, who will be playing campus genius Zayday. Palmer starred in her own teaser, dubbed “Zayday Bubblegum.” “She doesn’t like sororities but she’s talked into joining the sorority so that she can run for president and bolster her resume because she has great aspirations after she graduates from college.” Lots of people have been wondering about Nick Jonas’s involvement in the show. He will be playing preppy golfer and

entitled rich kid in a fraternity nicknamed the “Dollar Scholars” along with Glen Powell. Powell will be playing the boyfriend of Chanel. “There’s countless love triangles and lots of sex,” Murphy said to EW. “Nick is very funny because he’s completely playing against type. The thing I will say about the Nick character is he’s not who he seems to be. Nick has a dark side, which comes out in the episodes.” “Ryan Murphy’s such a visionary, and I think this is going to be a show that’s going to surprise a lot of people,” Nick told Entertainment Tonight. “Ryan is one of those guys who has such a clear vision for what he wants to accomplish and do, and this show’s no exception.” A lot of the other characters, including one played by Abigail Breslin, will be Chanel’s henchwomen. “Breslin is Chanel #5, Lourd is Chanel #3 and Ariana Grande is Chanel #2,” Murphy said. “They can’t believe what is happening with their sorority and can’t believe the dean is cracking down on them because they have lived a reign of terror. Now finally they’re seniors and it’s their time to live it up and they’re told they’re not going to able to and they’re not happy about it at all.” As the show continues filming in New Orleans, and the fall premiere creeps closer, more details will be revealed.
