The Catskill Soap Company is a regular at the Harvest Festival.

Catskill Soap Company – prepare to be slathered! BY ALLISON RUEF

W

hen you visit the Catskill Soap Company at the Harvest Festival, be prepared to be slathered. Gently taking your hands, proprietor Annie Lewis will

make a believer out of you, which isn’t a hard sell – her Slather face and body cream is so rich and creamy it feels wonderful and smells even better. Catskill Soap Company’s bath and

body products are more than just bar soap. The signature Slather, handdipped incense, and No “Deet”er Skeeter bug spray, which contains only natural pest repellents and no

harmful chemicals, are just a few of the products you’ll find. What began as a way to relieve stress from a demanding and emotionally draining job as a social worker in New York City morphed into a full time career for Lewis. “It was a matter of changing our priorities,” she explains. “Plus, there’s only so much product you can give as gifts to friends and family.” Back at the Harvest Festival and fresh off a run at the annual Renaissance Fair at Sterling Forest, Lewis, who calls Bloomingburg home, is thrilled to be back. “I love everything about the Harvest Festival,” she says. “The environment, crafts, food vendors and the whole atmosphere – it’s wonderful!” Look for her fall line of Slather and soaps in Pumpkin Spice and Apple Jack (and Peel) as well as favorites Shea Butter and Goat Milk, and Lavender and Goat Milk. By all means, offer your hands for a relaxing slather and good conversation with Annie and her staff. You’ll be glad you did!

Coffee with integrity – Java Love Coffee Roasters BY ALLISON RUEF

C

elebrating five years in Sullivan County and their fifth year at the Bethel Woods Harvest Festival, Java Love Coffee Roasters slogan is “coffee with integrity” – and they mean it. But what does that mean for a humble coffee bean to have integrity? How can coffee be honest and sincere? “Simple,” says Kristine Petrik, coowner of Java Love with her partner Jodie Dawson. “It is created from a conscientious desire to produce the highest quality coffee using only sustainable and/or organically grown beans from farmers and coops who respect the environment,” explains Kristine. “It also means we roast every batch of beans with the same attention to detail and an honest desire to treat people and coffee with respect.” Pretty deep for a simple bean – but just one cup of Java Love will make you a believer. Coffee connoisseurs will be

hard pressed to find a more unique and atypical variety than Java Love’s selection. “Some of the coffees we carry are produced in such small batches, we are lucky to get any of it – but we do – and they sell out quickly,” explains Kristine. “The perfect example would be our Peru Chonti Especial. We were able to grab four bags of select organic beans from farmer Aladino Delgado, who is working to turn his whole farm over to organic practices. So, by purchasing even a small amount of his organic product, we are helping fund his move to strictly organic farming.” If decaf is your preferred cup of joe, be sure to try their water-processed decaf, that tastes so much like the real thing, customers often question if it's really decaf. For coffee lovers, it will be hard to go back to the “regular stuff” when you’ve felt the love! Java Love is at 1577 NYS Rte. 17B, White Lake. Call 583-4082 or visit www.javaloveroasters.com.
