Don’t miss the Dance of the Lights!

E

ach year local residents and visitors head to 107 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro to see a dazzling display that evokes the holiday spirit. For years, Canal Towne Emporium has presented Dance of the Lights. The show runs from the day after Thanksgiving (November 29) to Christmas Eve. The 15minute long show will run

once every night at 7 p.m. This is the first year with their new lighting system, with four new songs and new effects that will be added to every year. This year’s show is dedicated to Michael Roosa, the original creator and designer of the show, who has retired from those duties, but still helps out

as an advisor. Canal Towne is open from November 29 through Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturdays, as well as on Sundays and Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. And the light show is presented even

when the store is not open. For more info about Canal Towne, visit http://canaltowne.com/.

he next best thing to the Jeffersonville Baking Company opening on Main Street just might be the Holiday Market this weekend at the Jeff firehouse. Sponsored by the owners of the big pink bakery that's under construction across from the fire department, the Market will feature Christmas bakery goodies along with a raft of other holiday-ish things to buy and do. “Our head baker is Manal Grosso of Bloomingburg, who owned a bakery in Ellenville, and she'll be baking things like cookies and gingerbread and taking orders for holiday baked goods,” said Lauren Seikaly, owner of the Jeffersonville Baking Company along with husband Michael Huber. Working hand-in-hand with the committee for the James Dworetsky Holiday Parade, which begins at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 29, the Holiday Market will host a visit from Santa at 4 p.m. that day and then continue to be open for customers until 9 p.m.

The soon-to-open Jeffersonville Baking Company (pictured) will be hosting a Holiday Market this weekend in Jeffersonville across the street at the firehouse.

On Saturday, Nov. 30, the Market will open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to holiday foods, the Market will feature lots to buy and do. Wreaths from Elm Garden Design in Livingston Manor; handmade cutting boards and spatulas from Milanville Wood; Jeffersonville resident Trey

Speegle's fun pet bowls and other items are just the beginning of the wares for sale. Plus Andrea McDowell of River Family Wellness in Callicoon will offer Reiki, and Megan Montenaro of Jeffersonville will share mindfulness tips for staying sane during the hectic holidays.

Montenaro manages The Vintage House, an eclectic shop across the street from the Jeff Post Office, which

will also participate in the Holiday Market with vintage holiday decor and other items. The shop and the Tavern on Main restaurant are owned by Seikaly and Huber. As for the bakery itself, Seikaly is expecting an official opening by the end of December. The work is being done by Just-in-Time Contracting owned by Justin McElroy of Hortonville. The first floor will offer a cafe with booths and armchairs and a larger space for benches and cafe tables. A laptop room will invite people who need a quiet space to work. Then there's a library, complete with fireplace, that will offer books to browse or to buy. A balcony for parade viewing and a garden park with outdoor seating are all part of the plans. Upstairs, a huge events space beckons. “Rehearsal dinner parties, anniversary and birthday parties... the space can hold 140 people,” Seikaly said. She also plans poetry reading, tea parties, yoga classes and events for kids, like a movie night. “We can't wait,” she said.

Get down with Dickens!

STORY BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM PHOTOS BY NYSSA CALKIN

I

Marty Moonshine McKernan and Don Banjo Smith played to a packed house at the Callicoon Brewery at last year’s Dickens on the Delaware.

n his famous novel, “A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens said, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. While Dickens on the Delware may not last “all the year, for one fun-filled day, the spirit of Christmas fills the air. The annual spectacle in Callicoon is set for Saturday, December 14 from noon to 6 p.m. The entire hamlet is transformed into a Victorian holiday wonderland. Retailers, galleries and restaurants will highlight their Holiday goods and specials, and dazzle town visitors with their Holiday Spirit. Hop on a carriage for an enjoyable winter horse and buggy ride and look around at the shopkeepers and local residents who will be dressed in Victorian garb. And see the stores, restaurants and the surrounding environs decorated to create the days of yore.

O

nce again, Santa Claus and his merry friends will travel through Sullivan County and parts of Pennsylvania bringing cheer and goodwill to all. Santa will be joined by the Gingerbread Man, Snow Queen, Christmas Mouse, and Elves, who will dance and sing for all. In a letter from the North Pole, Santa asked for all to wear your dancing shoes and to bring plenty of Christmas spirit. He said he is looking forward to seeing everyone this year and asked all the young children to be kind and listen to your parents or guardians.
