Eldred, Liberty, SW girls returning strong

BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM AND RICHARD A. ROSS hree Sullivan County girls’ soccer teams made the postseason in 2016. Eldred and Sullivan West both earned trips to the State Tournament, while Liberty made the postseason in the highly competitive Section 9 Class B. Each squad has several key starters returning and should be factors in their respective divisions this season. Eldred The Lady Yellowjackets’ 2016 campaign ended in regional play, despite having great offensive success during the regular season, Bolton Central’s defense was too much, as they fell 10. Key losses for Eldred are Jordan Lepes, Lynzee Kelty (100+ goal career goal scorer who now plays for Pace University) and Alyssa McGrail. Expect Eldred to have another good season, as the group has the right formula of an infusion of young talent, such as Lynzee’s younger sister Lenae Kelty, who gained valuable experience last season, and veteran leadership in the form of seniors Kassandra Weatherly and Alaina Gaughan, as well as junior Sami Clemmons. The team also has several more players returning with varsity experience. Sonia Kidney takes over as the team’s new head coach. Her Lady Yellowjackets were scheduled to open their season on Wednesday against Chester, and are slated to host Liberty in a non-league contest today at 4:15 p.m. Liberty The Lady Indians’ 2016 season came to an end in a highly competi-

of play for the entire team.” Team captains are Gabriela Nolan, Jerikah Fleischman and Olivia Racette. Sullivan West It was a magical season for the Lady Bulldogs in 2016, as they defeated Webutuck in the Section IX Class C championship game in Middletown to earn the school’s first girls soccer sectional title. Despite losing to Haldane in the opening round of the state tourney, as well as the graduation of some talented seniors, the Lady Bulldogs have quite the returning core, all of which have playoff experience. “We’ve got a good group coming back,” SW Girls Soccer Coach Mike Ellmauer said. “The seniors are trying to lead as well as the seniors did last year. That’s McKinley Bernitt, Hope Erlwein, Leizel Schlott, Jordan Kubenik, Shelby Diehl, Nicole Kocher and Kendra LaBagh. We’ve got a couple of young people who are filling in. We’ll see how the season goes. I think we’re a little bit ahead of where we were last year. What we have to be concerned about is resting on our laurels. Now we have a target on our back. Last year we kind of snuck in and surprised people. In striking capability, we have at least six people who can play up front or in the midfield and can score. On defense we have a little bit of a learning curve but we’re working on it. We play Monticello the first day of school and then the Downsville tournament.” The Downsville tournament is scheduled to conclude on Saturday morning with games beginning at 10 a.m.

Coach: Josh Santoro Last year’s record: 5-10 (0-2 OCIAA) Key losses: Garrett Kolvenbach, Max Smyth, Anthony Strasser and Erek Binkowski. Strengths: We are a more unified team this year. Hoping our unselfish play we've established in practice will continue through the year. Weaknesses: We are very young with limited Varsity experience. Goals: As always, we want to Win Sections and go from there. Key games: Mount Academy. As long as they are with us [same division], they will always be our key games. They are a well-coached team that is fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game. Coach’s comment: This is my tenth year coaching soccer at Eldred. This group is showing the most teamwork I've seen. They have speed and the willingness to make the right play. They are also one of the most fun team I've had the honor to coach. We have the potential to do great things.

he Fallsburg Comets varsity boys soccer team, fresh off a highly successful 2016 campaign, returned to the pitch yesterday, traveling to Port Jervis to face the Red Raiders. Last year’s squad posted a 16-1-1 overall record and won the Section 9 Class B title – the team’s first sectional championship in 24 years – and soared into the state tourney, falling to Hastings High School in a highly competitive regional contest. The team lost six starters to graduation. However, their goalkeeper Selvin Brizuela, leading goal scorer Kelvin Nunez, Jefry Gonzalez and Justin Mednick are all returning this season. As far as Head Coach Michael Geller’s expectations for his team, he said, “To build character and team first mentality.” Geller added that in order to do so, “The team needs to find the motiva-

be ready.” While in sports, oftentimes the objective is to outscore the opponent, which Fallsburg did well last season, but even more impressive was the team’s defensive mindset. Nunez noted that his goals for the season are for the team to, “Do the same thing as last year and try to go further.” In order to do so, Nunez says they have to, “…be defensively strong like last year.” At this stage of the season, it’s uncertain if the team will show any stylistic changes. “It really depends on who is a part of the team this year,” Geller said. “Every year I have to look at my players and decide what formation will work best. That is my job to figure out and wherever I put the players, they then have to perform. That’s why I love the game of soccer.” Fallsburg’s home opener is this Tuesday, September 12, where they’ll face S.S. Seward at 4 p.m. in a nonleague contest.

JOSEPH ABRAHAM | DEMOCRAT

From the left, Coach Dan Redmond, Michael Batista, Jamie Rein, Madelin Morin and Ethan Mednick.

Fallsburg Cross Country Coach: Dan Redmond Key returnees: Shawn Leszczynski, Michael Batista. Key losses: Brittany Leventoff Team strengths: The modified team that started with me as seventh graders are now ninth graders that will add to the strength of the varsity team. We should now be able to field both boys and girls teams which will make us qualify for all meets. Team weaknesses: Numbers are still a weaknesses as I would like to have more runners at my disposal. I would like for the team to go every race with an over abundance of runners just in case anybody is sick or not in school that day.

Team goals: To be able to score in every race and even win a few. To continually grow every race as my third season as coach of the team and compete against the other schools in every race. Key meets: Burke, O'Neill and Liberty Coach's comment: I am so excited about the team this year. I think we have the capability to put Fallsburg cross country on the map and make other teams understand how we will be on the rise. the maturity of my returners included with youth of my new ones will make for an excited team.

GOOD LUCK!

Fallsburg Volleyball Coach: Carlye Bertholf Overall record: 5-10 (4-4 OCIAA) Top returning players: Sadie Caballero (senior), Kaitlyn Simms (senior), Julia Batista (senior), Samantha Perna (junior). Key losses: Hailey Hart was our setter and hard to replace and Liliana Moody was a strong outside hitter. Team strengths: This team has dedication and a willingness to work hard no matter what the situation. They have been playing together since middle school which has helped them learn to communicate

on the court. Team weaknesses: We have a small team so this group needs to be prepared for anything and able to adjust when needed. Season's goals: To continue improving and building on our skills as a team. Key games: Every game is key for us because we learn something in each new situation the team is put in. Coach's comment: I am looking forward to this season. I have a lot of returning players and some great additions to the team.

Fallsburg Girls Soccer Coach: Kate Santoianni Overall record: 0-13 (0-8 OCIAA) Top returning players: Sierra Barbiani, our keeper, who saved countless goals during difficult games last season, Allison Martinez a strong midfielder and leader, and Wendy Barrera a versatile player who does not easily give up. Key losses: Our two seniors from last year who showed great leadership and enthusiasm. Team strengths: A strong sense of pride and perseverance. Last year’s losses have only made the players more driven towards success. Many of the players have been working on their skills and endurance throughout the summer. Team weaknesses: A lack of experience in the sport. While some of the girls have played since childhood, many others only have a year or two under their belt. We have some catching up to do but I don't doubt their ability to make up for lost time. Season's goals: We don't want to see 11 individuals running the field. We want our team to look like one cohesive unit on the pitch. I believe we will get there by building a sense of ownership, commitment and developing confidence in each indi-

vidual as well as the team as a whole. Key games: The first few games will be key for us to set the tone for the rest of the season. Coach's comment: While last year the team worked to fine tune their fundamental skills and develop their passion for the sport, this year will be key in setting the standard for the girls soccer teams here in Fallsburg. Commitment, confidence, and ownership will be stressed. I want the young soccer fans at the elementary and middle school levels to look up to these young ladies and say “That's the jersey I want to rock in a few years! That's the team I want to play for.” I'm excited for this season and to see what the players are bringing to the table.

Liberty Cross Country Coach: Ralph Bressler Last year’s record: Boys (4-6, 2-4 OCIAA), Girls (0-3, 0-2 OCIAA) Top returning players:Jordan Russo and Daniela Mercado. Team strengths: Two strong runners in Jordan and Daniela. Team weaknesses: “We only have one girl. The other boys need to step up and close the gap between Jordan and the other five. Newcomer Nicholas Connal has looked good in practice.” Season's goals: Give seniors Jordan and Daniela every opportunity to qualify for states. Try to bring the

boys along to be competitive in dual meets. Coach's comment: “I love coaching distance running and try to instill that into my runners. Jordan and Daniela both seem to understand what is required to get better in this sport. It is a matter of challenging yourself and running against better runners. I think they will both try hard this year to be their best and peak for sectionals. We try to mix some fun in with our harder workouts while still maintaining a rigorous trailing schedule.” See Cross Country schedule, 14F

Improving team communication on the pitch is a weakness that can and will be corrected. Season's goals: Have our team return to sectionals by focusing on improving every game and continue to strengthen our teamwork. The team is eager to participate in this year’s Robert Van Etten tournament and hopefully place. Key games: All our league games. Cornwall and Goshen are always tough and are top Class A teams in the OCL. Fallsburg has always been a good rivalry and it has intensified over the past few years. It has become a true “clasico” for Sullivan County. Coach's comment: Coach Gittlemen and Coach Fratto built a great foundation for the boys soccer program. and sophomore class that will be providing the team valuable minutes of playing time. Tactically speaking we have players who understand the game well and can translate what we practice on during the week into games. We have players with a strong work ethic and a deep competitive drive. Team weaknesses: We have a strong freshman and sophomore class but with that also comes inexperience. Although the young girls can play, they also need to mature and get minutes under their belt. At the Varsity level the game is faster and space looks smaller. Our younger players will have to make the adjustment from playing Modified/JV to playing Varsity, however, they are ready for the challenge. Team goals: To increase the number of wins from last year. To create a positive competitive environment where our players learn the game, create long lasting relationships and keep their academics up.

Team weaknesses: Doubles teams Season’s goals: To be competitive and have a respectable season by winning at least 50 percent of our matches. Key matches: Every match we play is important for our win/loss

record Coach's comment: We were able to recruit 10 new players to participate in tennis which has enabled us to field a JV team this year. We did not enough players last season and had to drop the JV team. Although these girls have never played tennis, we have been doing our best to teach them the basic fundamentals of tennis to help them acquire knowledge and skills of the game. Hopefully, the new batch of players will gain experience by competing in matches and improve their game for next season. SEE TENNIS SCHEDULE ON PAGE 19F

Monticello Volleyball Team weakness: We don't have a lot of big girls, we are a fairly small team. Season's goal: To just improve and do better than we did last year. Key games: That's really hard to answer, our schedule is so different from last year so we are going to have to go into this treating every game like it's a key game. Coach’s comments: We look for-

ward to this upcoming season, I have a really great group of ladies who I know will leave everything that they

have out of the court. As a coach, win or lose, that's all you can ask for. SEE VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE ON PAGE 21F
