Catskill courses have it all STORY AND PHOTOS BY KEN COHEN

T

o play every hole in the Catskills is to encounter virtually every type of landscape, topography, hazard, scenery and slope imaginable. Anything that typically catches a golfer’s eye or any design feature typical of a famous architect is present and accounted for here in Delaware, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties. Whether it be links-style open holes, tree-lined holes, trees in the middle of fairways, trees overhanging greens, whispy fescue roughs, closelycut collection areas, waste bunkers, pot bunkers,

no bunkers, bulkheads, island greens, peninsula greens, winding creeks, huge lakes, deep ravines, elevated cliffs, square greens, hourglass greens, runway tees, double tees, risk-reward par fives, classic, short par fours, straight downhill or straight uphill par threes, Tillinghast or Robert Trent Jones designs – you name it and Catskill courses have it. Here is a summary of where you’ll find whatever you might be looking for.

A Tillinghast course Perhaps the greatest of architects, Tillinghast designed two courses in the Catskill area: Port Jervis Country Club (now known as Lynx at River Bend) and the original 9 holes at Grossinger Country Club, now the Little G course. If you have played either of these two courses, you’ll know Tillinghast was involved – flashed up bunkering, small greens and nothing fancy. Tillinghast believed in controlling your ball, especially when approaching the greens. (It should be noted that all three courses at Grossinger’s are currently closed but being maintained).

Author Ken Cohen’s amateur golf career has spanned 7 different decades – from the 1960s through 2020s. Cohen is also a 9-time winner the of Sullivan County Democrat Golf Tournament, the most of any player in the tournament’s 38-year history. 8 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2020

Links-style holes Though not very prominent, a few courses including the Villa Roma in Callicoon and Sullivan County Country Club have several holes with a links-style feel – open expanses without trees, fescue areas, run-up areas to greens and grass bunkers. The 16th at the Villa Roma is probably the best example of a links-style hole in the area – a brute of a par-four with a wide, treeless driving area bordered by heathery brush. Because it is exposed, the wind is always a factor, especially playing to a relatively small green. A classic, Scottish hole with no visible hazards in play, but trouble lurking once the ball is in the air.

Trees Catskill courses have plenty of trees – many courses are carved out of hardwood forests, classically framing the holes. Some courses even have trees in the middle of the fairway, overhanging greens or in the case of the 8th at Tennanah Lake, in

Grossinger's famous island green on the 13th hole is one of the original island designs now found on many courses.

front of the green. Unfortunately, some memorable trees have died or have been taken down – the maple fronting the old 5th hole at Grossinger’s (now the 14th) and just recently the oak on the right side of the 3rd fairway at the Villa Roma (which by the way has been replaced with three smaller trees transplanted from another area of the course). Come fall all these trees turn into a vivid canvas of colors, providing a spectacular background for golf or any outdoor activity. Collection areas Though there are no Donald Ross-designed courses in the Catskill area, a few have Ross elements. In the early 2000s, Grossinger’s has added collection areas to several holes, most notably to No. 1, 2 and 10. Pot Bunkers The 4th hole at the Villa Roma has one of the only true pot bunkers in the area – a small, devilish pit that swallows any approach shot that comes up short of the green. The penalty can be severe – getting up and down is virtually impossible. Road holes The 17th at St. Andrews is perhaps the most famous hole in the world in which a road comes directly into play. Here in the Catskills, we have a few road holes of our own. The first green at

Grossinger’s Little G butts up snugly to a county road. Any misjudged shot that sails a little long, is headed out of bounds and over the road. The 16th at Tarry Brae plays adjacent to Pleasant Valley Road – anything left off the tee will pound the pavement. Several courses are or were bisected by roads – currently Villa Roma and formerly the now closed Spring Glen, Concord Monster and International courses to name a few – where you would have to cross roads to get to another part of the course.

Island/Peninsula Greens The Catskills is home to one of the original true island greens – the 13th at Grossinger’s. The green is completely surrounded by water and can only be accessed by a footbridge. A famous hole not only locally but beyond the region as well. Golfers all over the country know about the “island green” at Grossinger’s. The 15th at Lochmor is the next closest thing to an island green – it’s a peninsula green surrounded by water on three sides. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed three courses in the Catskill area – the now closed Fallsview, Tuxedo Golf Club and Hancock Golf Course. The legendary architect left his mark with long runway tees, fairway bunkers positioned to squeeze CONTINUED on PAGE 12 CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2020 • 9

the better player’s tee shots and large, undulating greens fronted by hazards. The Fallsview was often referred to as one of the best nine holes anywhere in New York State. It’s too bad Jones never got to finish the job. The Tuxedo Club in Orange County is a private club, but has hosted several regional and state tournaments.

Periscopes Sullivan County Country Club in Liberty still utilizes periscopes on two holes to allow players to see if the landing area is clear. Tarry Brae has one on the first hole. A useful aid that more courses should install.

The pot bunker fronting the fourth hole at Villa Roma is a classic Scottish design feature rarely found in these parts.

Member Bounces With mountainous landscape comes slopes, hills, uneven ground and all sorts of weird lies and bounces for golfers. Some of the more pronounced ricochets you should be familiar with is the dead-right kick of the ledge on Sullivan County’s 4th hole (it acts as a feeder to the green and explains why this hole has been the site of more hole-in-ones than any course in the Catskills); the big kick left at the Little G’s 2nd hole and Lochmor’s No. 11; the bounce to the right off Villa Roma’s 15th fairway or Tarry Brae’s 10th; the unpredictable movements at Kutsher’s

10th (now closed) and Stony Ford’s 2nd.

Wildlife As with most courses in rural, open areas, wildlife is part of the natural scenery. At any given time, you can see deer, rabbits, gophers, beavers, geese, ducks, swans and many different birds at Catskill courses. If you play late in the day, sometimes it will be just you and the deer – a tranquil atmosphere that is hard to duplicate anywhere else.

Rocks and Stones With a mountainous area comes bedrock, quarries and lots of rocks and stones. Architects worked these elements into several Catskill courses adding a distinct local touch. At French Woods in Hancock, the Villa Roma in Callicoon, Winding Hills in Montgomery and Tarry Brae, rock outcroppings, stone walls and stone tee boxes are an integral part of the design. Backdrops Virtually everywhere you play in the Catskills, you’ll be hitting against a mountainous backdrop. At the old Nevele and Spring Glen, the Shawangunk Mountain actually rings the courses and provides fascinating views of a ball in flight.

Large lakes are part of the background scenery at several courses: parts of Tarry Brae overlook Echo Lake; the back nine at Lochmor presides over Morningside Lake and of course Grossinger Lake is a prominent focal point on at least four holes at Grossinger’s.

The Villa Roma Clubhouse in Callicoon.

Clubhouses Catskill area courses are not known for their grand clubhouses – rather they are typically small and casual. But a few of the newer ones such as French Woods, Villa Roma, Town of Wallkill and Winding Hills are well-designed, built to take advantage of the surrounding scenery as well as conveniently move golfers around.

Enjoy the Tusten Mountain Trail

hile the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it seems we’ll be in quarantine for at least a while longer. Having to stay inside except for essential errands (or if you’re an essential worker) can take a toll on both our physical and mental state. But we all have the a-ok to venture outside in a safe manner. This means keeping a distance of six feet from other people, and no groups more than ten. It’s also advised to wear a mask if you think you will be in close contact with someone. It’s also the perfect time to get outside— springtime. The weather can be hit or miss during this time, so take advantage of those warm and sunny days and go out for a hike. A great trail is the Tusten Mountain Trail. It’s located just outside of Narrowsburg, NY right off of Route 97. There is a convenient parking lot along the Delaware River (while you’re there, admire the beauty of the river, and maybe even plan a boating trip for another day). This trail is maintained by the National Park Service and is owned by the Ten Mile River Boy Scout Camp. Finding the head of the trail is a lit-

tle tricky if you’ve never been there before, but just follow these directions. Walk from the parking area to Tusten Road, which runs parallel to the river. In about .2 miles you will cross a stone arch bridge. Follow the red TMR (Ten Mile River) and yellow (Scouting symbol) blazes along Tusten Road until a sign points to the right where the trail enters the woods on the right at about .7 miles. Along the way you will notice a lean-to and tent camping area. There is also a quarry, the first of many, on the right side of the road. As soon as you turn into the woods you will find the register box for the trail. Turn left at the register box and hike to about 1.1 miles. You will gain most of your elevation at this point. Watch for another quarry on the left in the woods as the trail starts to level. At about 1.2 miles you should come across a sign that points to the lookout, which is just ahead after a short climb. From the lookout you can see the Delaware River in the distance. It’s the perfect moment for CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

photo opportunities. Bring some binoculars and you may even see an eagle, and other wildlife. Continue on the trail and down the other side of the hill. Turn left and walk south along Tusten Road for .6 miles to get back to the parking area. The Laundrette, Tre Amici Ristorante Italiano, Narrowsburg Inn and Carini’s are open for takeout (The Heron is not yet open). Some of the shops on Main Street are closed because of the COVID-19 crisis, but some are open, either by appointment or only allowing one person in at a time. It’s probably best to call ahead. You can also check out the views of the river from the Main Street deck, take a stroll along the Narrowsburg Bridge, or pick up some groceries from Pete’s Market. If the quarantine lifts any time soon, hopefully more stores and activities will be available.

STORY AND PHOTO BY CLAIRE STABBERT

The author and her boyfriend Gene Burns enjoy a beautiful picnic atop Seminary Hill in Callicoon last summer.

hen I’m thinking of packing the perfect picnic, I always keep in mind who I am going with and how long we are staying. My picnics look a little different these days, since I have shifted from family picnics as a little kid to romantic picnics with my boyfriend. I personally think the key to a great picnic is seasonal and local foods. If you are outside enjoying nature, you might as well have food that incorporates the outdoors. By incorporating local cheese and trying to include harvest veggies from hometown sources into the menu, you will be

able to enjoy a fresh and tasty picnic. I recently made a beautiful ramp pesto, since ramps are in season, that I placed in some pasta with mozzarella balls, and sundried tomatoes. The dish travels very well. To make the pesto, simply place 2 cups of ramps, 3 tbsps of pine nuts, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp pepper 1/2 cup olive oil, and 1/2 cup parmesan cheese into a blender and blend for about 2 minutes. (This is my Aunt Laurie Sanford's famous pesto recipe, so just pretend I didn’t tell you, it will be our little secret). I doubled a batch and have been enjoying this pesto on sandwiches, pasta salads, fresh veggies, etc. When picnicking with a significant other, I suggest packing some cheese and charcuterie (depending on the length of your stay) fresh pre chopped veggies, a bottle of wine, and some other liquids to hydrate. I always try to make things romantic and pack a nice blanket to lay on, and some local crunchy bread from Beach Lake Bakery to enjoy with cheese. Family picnics are typically packed with our favorite types of sandwich. You can enjoy your sandwich with a spread of fresh ramp pesto, and I love to add a little crunch to my sub with alfalfa sprouts. Make it exciting! Pasta salads, bean salad, and potato salad are always a family favorite as well. Don’t forget to pack some outdoor activities, whether that be a frisbee, can jam, etc. This pandemic has really made me appreciate what nature has to offer, and why not enjoy it even more with some well prepared food? Picnicking is a great way to be outside, while still being able to social distance. Enjoy and stay safe. This Ramp Pesto Pasta Salad is perfect for your next picnic.

armer temperatures lead to an increase in outdoor dining. Grillmasters anxiously wait to show off their skills while guests gravitate around the barbecue in the backyard. No matter the temperature outside or the size of the crowd around your dinner table, food safety is a concern whenever foods will be transported inside and outdoors or enjoyed in the fresh air. A survey conducted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that, while most people realize the months of May through September are prime times for the threat of food poisoning, consumers still are not practicing correct outdoor food safety procedures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are around 76 million cases of foodborne ill-

Food can spoil even before making its way into your kitchen. When food shopping, put the cold and frozen items on your list in your cart last. This will help keep them fresher longer. Always use plastic bags to protect other foods against raw meat or poultry juices that can leak. Bag these items together at checkout so that you’ll know to immediately put all of the perishable items away when you get home. Safety around the grill

Preparing foods involves avoiding cross-contamination between uncooked and cooked foods. That means switching utensils so that bacteria will not transfer from uncooked or partially cooked food to fully cooked food. Use a cooler to keep refrigerated foods cold until it’s time to put them on the grill if you’re cooking away from home, such as at a public picnic site. Otherwise, wait until the grill is hot and ready before bringing out foods that need to be cooked. Rely on a cooking thermometer to test the internal temperature of foods to ensure they reach temperatures that will kill bacteria or other pathogens. Hamburgers should reach 160 F and chicken breasts 165 F. When reheating fully cooked meats like hot dogs, grill to 165 F, or until steaming hot. Discard any unused marinades so that they do not contaminate cooked foods.

Outdoor buffet tips

Food also needs to be protected once it is served. Use ice or coolers to keep cold salads and condiments at at least 40 F. Foods should not remain outside in hot weather of 90 F or above for more than one hour. The maximum time food should be kept sitting out is two hours, says the USDA. Keep hands and utensils clean at all times. This way you do not transfer any germs onto safe foods. If a fresh water source is unavailable, keep hand wipes or disinfecting gels at the ready to clean up before eating.

beautiful little falcon, an American kestrel, perches high on a wire near Divine Corners in Loch Sheldrake, not far from SUNY Sullivan. Twenty-five miles away, a red-tailed hawk soars over the Beechwoods area of Callicoon, while in Grahamsville, a sharpshinned hawk settles on a branch to search for an unwary songbird for dinner. Bald eagles and osprey are our area’s largest birds of prey but smaller hawks and falcons are just as much fun to explore and watch. “I love hawks,” said Renee Davis of Youngsville. “A lot of people don’t like them because they eat meat. But everybody’s got to eat, and hawks find their place in the food chain.” Colleague Ruth McKeon of Woodbourne thrills to standing silently by as a bird feeds its young. McKeon has bird-watched for over 70 years, taught the skills of stillness and attention by her mother. This season, it was McKeon who spotted the 40 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2020

Then there have been times at Bashakill Wildlife Management Area in Wurtsboro, she said, where she’s watched a redshouldered hawk hunting food for a nest of young ones. The red-shouldered hawk boasts dark-andwhite checkered wings and warm reddish barring on the breast. The tail is black with narrow white bands. “It’s thrilling,” said McKeon. “It’s wonderful to watch nature, to commune with nature, especially during these difficult times.” BEAKS, CLAWS AND MEAT Regardless of size and shape, birds of prey do eat meat, thus the need for their hooked beaks and large talons. A frequently sighted hawk in our area is the red-tail, often seen flying over the

countryside, alongside farms and near people’s fields, said Davis. A red-tail falls into the category of a “buteo,” a Latin word for buzzard hawk. These are the bigger hawks with short tails and wide wings spans. They have a penchant for soaring in the sky and zooming down to prey on rodents, rabbits and other small mammals. For a few years now, Davis and her

husband have watched a pair of redtailed hawks return to a tree nest on their property. “The other day we saw the male fly in with a snake for his mate who was sitting on eggs,” said Renee. “What I love about hawks is that they are faithful,” she said. “They return to familiar surroundings. They are faithful to their mates (many hawks mate for life), and to their young (both sexes feed and care for the baby birds).” Hawks have terrific eyesight, seeing up to eight times better than humans. Speed-wise, they can dive 150 miles per hour through the air to catch prey, with the peregrine falcon even faster at 200 mph, making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. Another example of a buteo in our area is the broad-winged hawk, a raptor smaller than the red-tailed hawk with a chunky body and large head. Adults are solid brown above, barred reddish-brown below, and with striking black-andwhite bands on the tail. They tend to stay around the edges of woodlands and, during mating season, their high-pitched, piercing whistle is often heard. Broad-wings are one of the few hawks that actually migrate. Known for forming massive flocks during migration, they leave the U.S. and Canada to winter in Central and South America. Living less in the air and more in the woods are the hawks known as accipiters, which tend to be smaller in size. Examples in our region are the sharp-shinned hawk, the cooper’s hawk and the Northern goshawk, the latter of which is the largest, at about the size of a red-tailed hawk. Accipiters spend their time closer to the ground in forested or shrubby areas or quickly flying through trees. As compared to their buteo counterparts, these hawks primarily eat other birds rather than mammals. As far as their voices go, hawks most often screech in flight, a sound that can strike terror in humans with a favorite kitten in the yard or a bird on the wire.

‘Gibby’ retires from the Villa Roma CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Charlie “Gibby” Gibson has retired after 19 years as the official ‘Starter’ at the Villa Roma golf course.

BY ED TOWNSEND

orry Folks, “Gibby” has retired. Golfers visiting the Villa Roma this year will be asking, “Is Charlie Still Here?,” but they will get the sad reply, “no he has retired.” Charlie Gibson, often referred to and teased about being the Director of Outside Operations at the Villa Roma Golf Course took the second retirement of his life last fall after working at the Villa for some 19 years. His first retirement came in 1999 after 34 years as a postal carrier at the Liberty Post Office. Add that up folks, its 53 years working in two different occupations and now at the age of 76 it sounds like he deserves retirement and time to enjoy things he likes. Born and raised in Fallsburg, the son of Ed and Bessie Gibson, Charlie enjoyed his high school years where he played on the varsity baseball and basketball teams. Following high school he served in the United States Army Reserve and worked in the former Liberty Giant Food Market and had the opportunity to join the Liberty Post Office in 1965 as a

letter carrier. He remembers well his postal route and noted, “it was 14 miles a day, 586 patrons, 13 dogs and lots of snow.” His official title when he started working his summer job at the Villa Roma was “Starter” and his duties included performing customer relations work to assume optimum use of the golf course facilities through scheduling golfers’ starting tee times, inspecting registrations and tickets for validity and providing information on course rules and procedures. As the official starter this job required initiative, independent judgement and diplomacy in order to maintain favorable golf course use and effective public relations and a work schedule that included weekdays, weekends and holidays. Golfers often told us that Charlie definitely knew the rules and had the etiquette conducive to satisfactory play and that he always displayed the ability to prioritize responses to external demands and maintain organizational priorities. Villa Roma’s PGA Professional Matt Kleiner noted that, “Charlie was the best employee I’ve ever worked with in the 34 years I have been the professional here." “Charlie was the main man running the tee sheet every day...he was personable with the guests, made sure they knew the rules of the day, and kept the golf cart fleet running like nobody else could,” Kleiner said. Kleiner in praising Gibson added, “That was his job and he took pride in it and when we hosted big golf events Charlie knew the routine and nothing really needed to be said and you knew he knew how to get the job done.” Gibson was often teased and referred to as the “Director of Outside Operations” by Kleiner who added, “Charlie made sure the rest of the staff knew their job for the day as many kids came and went through working at the golf course,” and “they all experienced the ‘Gibby’ experience.” Adding to his comments about Gibson, Kleiner said, “His famous laugh made you laugh, the

guests always asked is Charlie still here” and “they will miss him and I'll miss coming around the corner into the pro shop every morning and not hearing his usual Charlie greeting ‘Yah’.... Charlie Gibson was simply the best.” Being around the game of golf for all these years Charlie when asked if he played the game said, “I started to play until I saw how upset golfers got and wondered how this can be fun and so now I do not play anymore.” Some of Charlie’s favorite people that he worked with at the Villa Roma included Matt Kleiner, Gary Ranson and Gregg Semenetz Jr. “I really enjoyed this job, meeting all types of people, local hotel and time share owners and the Democrat tournament folks,” Gibson said. He estimated that he worked with some 60-to70 people while at the Villa Roma and worked at a young age of 11 as a caddie and that now he will be fully retired, “will enjoy working on the lawn, going to the track when it reopens and will just take it easy.” Charlie's family consists of wife Janice, children Renee, Dana and Colleen and grandchildren Brittany, Tanner, Zachery and Charlyanna.

Climb aboard Fallsburg’s rail trails

Welcome to the Mountaindale Rail Trail

STORY AND PHOTOS BY PATRICIO ROBAYO

D

uring the COVID-19 pandemic, residents are urged to stay home to help stop the spread of the virus. But one thing you can do is visit the county’s rail trails. If you do visit the trails, you have to remember to practice social distancing and wear your mask. The Town of Fallsburg has two very popular rail-trails that you can visit during the pandemic that offer fresh air, scenery, and plenty of exercise to stretch out those legs. In Mountaindale, the Rail Trail is where the Ontario & Western Railway system once roared through the county, bringing goods and passengers. Right where those tracks once laid now bring tremendous walking trails that offer lovely views of the Sullivan Catskills. The 2.6-mile cinder-paved road connects 56 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2020

Mountaindale with Woodridge and features historical photos, along with public restroom, parking, picnic tables, and basketball courts. If you don’t feel like walking, you can rent a bike near the trailhead at Cinder Track Bicycles 6 Railroad Ave. in Mountaindale. Also, in Hurleyville, the Milk Train Rail Trail offers a level and paved trail that provides views of wetlands and a variety of environments on historic ground. Each trail has history markers at regular intervals that provide insight and information on the trail, history, and environment, making the trail experience a full one. The trail is nearly 3.5 miles of paved surface with an additional 1.9 miles of gravel-surface trail that connects Hurleyville to South Fallsburg.

All aboard! The start of Hurleyville’s Milk Train Rail Trail.

With a level and even paved trail, this trail is ADA compliant.
