• A Greenville subsidiary of TD Bank receives a $65 million allocation from the New Market Tax Credit program to provide loans in low-income communities.

• Spartanburg-based payday lender Advance America Inc. sold for around $780 million to Grupo Elektra of Mexico City.

• Hundreds of engineers, auto executives and academics from around the world visit Greenville for the International Electric Vehicle Conference to showcase the latest in sustainable vehicle technologies.

JAN. • Mauldin-based Bi-Lo Inc. buys Winn-Dixie in a stock deal valued at $560 million, creating one of the largest grocery chains in Southeastern United States. • Long-time Greenville real estate executive and community leader C. Dan Joyner dies. • The Interstate 185 toll road, the “Southern Connector,” raises rates as part of its bankruptcy reorganization. • BMW announces plan to invest $900 million, hire 1,000 and launch production in the future of a new model, the X4, at its manufacturing plant in Spartanburg County. • Fifth Third Bank leases property at 33 S. Main St. in downtown Greenville, establishing its first South Carolina location. • Baptist Easley hospital breaks ground on an $8 million medical complex in Powdersville.

• Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center invests $21.7 million to acquire assets of Cancer Centers of the Carolinas. • Clemson University’s MBA program in downtown Greenville adds a concentration on entrepreneurship. • Uniscite Inc. becomes the first Chinese company to establish operations in Laurens County.

• Texas couple Steve and Penny Carlile announce plans to acquire the Cliffs Club & Hospitality Group through bankruptcy court.

• A group of entrepreneurs announces plans to launch the S.C. African American Chamber of Commerce. • The city of Greenville hires Development Concepts Inc. of Indianapolis to help develop a plan for real estate and public-transit development in the city’s West Side neighborhoods. • Greenville City Council unanimously approves a resolution giving the University of South Carolina Upstate the green light for a new educational facility in downtown Greenville. • S.C. Department of Commerce plays matchmaker for lenders and entrepreneurs at an Upstate event. It was like speeddating for business capital rather than a lifelong mate.
