Scania gas and biodiesel engines

Sustainable performance. Scania raises the bar within alternative fuels by offering two Euro 6-certified gas engines, running just as excellently on biogas as on natural gas. Having the same driveability as regular diesel engines, these engines are ideal for both city transport and long haulage. Additionally, as the first truck manufacturer in the world, we add a line of new Euro 6 engines running up to 100 % on biodiesel to the engine range. Being highly flexible, they are the perfect choice for all operations with high demands on sustainability.

Biogas and natural gas engines. Biogas is a renewable fuel made from sewage or household waste, and Scania’s engines provide a very clean operation. Natural gas is a fossil fuel and comes in two types, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), and LNG (LiqueďŹ ed Natural Gas). Biogas and CNG can be used in parallel. Biodiesel engines. Scania’s biodiesel engines can be used for most types of operation and ranges. Biodiesel is easy to handle, available in commercial volumes, and can be mixed freely with regular diesel. An ideal biofuel for heavy applications and long-distance operations. Due to the nature of biodiesel, it leads to slightly increased fuel consumption and decreased engine power.

SCANIA ENGINE TECHNOLOGY

Technology leads the way. Scania takes pride in its strong in-house tradition in research and development. Over the years, we have pioneered a long line of new technologies, making it easy for our customers to find the right match for every need. A Scania engine has always been characterised by its robustness, fuel economy and high torque-to-power ratio. Another typical Scania feature is utter reliability, the result of extensive laboratory and field testing, where every engine is pushed to its limits – and beyond – before it is released. When it comes to exhaust aftertreatment, Scania has extensive experience of working with both EGR and SCR technologies. This is why you find engine options with similar output levels with either pure SCR or with a combination of EGR and SCR in our line-up.

14-15

Scania EGR Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) reduces emissions during combustion, directly in the combustion chamber. Scania EGR lowers nitrogen oxide emissions by cooling and reusing a portion of the exhaust gases. Scania EGR can decrease the amount of AdBlue needed, meaning smaller tanks and more space on the chassis. Whether on the open road, on the construction site or in the city, Scania EGR effectively reduces emissions in all conditions.

Scania SCR Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with a urea-based additive, AdBlue, ensures that exhaust gases are released with minimal nitrogen oxide content. When AdBlue is injected into the exhaust, a reaction takes place in a catalytic converter, which is integrated in the silencer.

SCANIA ENGINE TECHNOLOGY

Scania engine management To secure control of all aspects of engine performance, as well as the exhaust aftertreatment system for Euro 6, Scania has developed a new generation of engine management systems. All functions are controlled by the engine management system, which also provides advanced on-board diagnostics and allows detailed logging of operational data for subsequent analysis.

Scania modular combustion concept The potential for engine optimisation – excellent fuel economy, low emissions and generous torque – is at its greatest when the physical dimensions of the bore and stroke are within certain critical limits. This has led to the development of the Scania modular combustion concept. All Scania engines have identical combustion chambers and also share components such as pushrods, valve gear, roller tappets and piston rings. This makes them both efficient and exceedingly simple to maintain and repair. Scania’s modular product system also facilitates parts supply, which serves to maximise uptime.

Scania VGT The geometry and gas flow in the Scania VGT (variable-geometry turbocharger) is regulated by an electric actuator. This allows precise control of both charge-air to the engine, to boost low-speed engine power, and the flow of recirculated exhaust gases on EGR engines. The intake airflow can be optimised throughout the rev range. This means that the VGT helps to improve engine response and low-speed torque by maintaining the turbine speed while the gearchanges are being made.

Scania XPI Scania XPI (extra high pressure injection) is a Scania-designed common rail fuel injection system that makes continuous, precise adjustments to ensure optimal fuel delivery. The system varies the volume and timing of injection, thereby minimising consumption and emissions without restricting torque build-up. With Scania XPI, pressure can be set independently of engine speed, with exceptional precision.

16-17

Oxicat The oxidising catalyst is part of the Euro 6 aftertreatment system. It prepares the exhaust gases for subsequent stages in the exhaust flow by balancing NO and NO2 levels. It uses a catalytic process without any additives and is fully integrated in the compact Euro 6 silencer unit.

Scania particulate filter A particulate filter is used in Euro 6 exhaust systems. It reduces particles and soot, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxides in the exhaust gases. The latest generation of filters, integrated in the Scania Euro 6 exhaust aftertreatment system, is designed to regenerate continuously while driving. A forced regeneration can be activated by the driver at standstill.

Gas engine: Combustion principle The Scania gas engines work according to the Otto principle with spark ignition and lambda control. The injection system supplies the optimal fuel-air mix known as the stoichiometric combustion to completely burn all of the mixture. Together with a 3-way oxidation catalyst this results in very low emissions and reduced noise.

Gas engine: Multi-point port injection The injection system uses the lambda sensor to always ensure the optimum mix of fuel and air. The gas is led into each injector located in the respective cylinder’s induction pipe. The injection system adapts itself to different gas qualities and can handle both biogas and natural gas with different Wobbe indices.

SCANIA TRANSMISSION OPTIONS

Maximum efficiency. Minimum effort. Scania transmissions offer full command over any powertrain. With easy handling and precise gear control they provide maximum performance and operating economy, making every drive as relaxing as it is productive. Scania Opticruise, Scania Retarder and many other options mean that you can opt for a fully integrated powertrain, perfectly matched to your operation.

8 (8+1) speed gearboxes The virtue of this range-change gearbox lies in its simplicity. Based on a 4-speed main gearbox, plus a planetary section, it is rugged and compact. The smooth, positive action makes gearchanging easy for the driver. It is the natural choice for distribution driving and is available with Scania Opticruise automated gearchanging. The 8+1 speed gearbox, with an extra crawler ratio, is more than a match for the high-torque outputs of all but the most powerful Scania inline engines and the perfect choice for construction as well as some long-haulage operations. Several types of power take-off can be speciďŹ ed.

12 (12+2) speed gearboxes These range-splitter gearboxes are built to tackle the most challenging terrain, making them the perfect choice for demanding long-haulage or construction applications. The closely stepped ratios combine ease of driving with exceptional operating economy. For applications that demand additional low-speed pulling power, the 12+2 speed gearbox has two extra crawler ratios. The overdrive versions offer higher torque capacity in addition to overdrive for low and economic cruising revs. Scania Opticruise and Scania Retarder, as well as a selection of power take-offs are available for all range-splitter gearboxes.

18-19

Performance modes The performance modes are part of Scania Opticruise. They allow you to adapt the vehicle’s performance to match particular operational demands. Depending on truck type, up to three performance modes can be specified per vehicle. Switching mode is easily done while driving and the chosen mode is visible in the central display. If required, all settings can be altered or finetuned by a Scania service workshop. There are totally four performance modes: • Standard mode. Provides optimal balance between fuel economy and hill performance. • Economy mode. Tuned to minimise fuel consumption and thus contribute to lower fuel costs. • Power mode. Prioritises engine response and uphill performance in order to optimise transport time. • Off-road mode. Enables better traction control when driving in rough terrain and on surfaces with high rolling resistance.

Scania Opticruise Scania Opticruise, one of the first automated gearchanging systems on the market, has been refined in many steps over the years, and is now one of the smoothest and smartest systems on the market. The concept of a standard mechanical gearbox remains, but the system has been extensively revised with improved mechanical components and new software. You are offered the unique possibility of choosing between a fully automated version with an automatic clutch and a classic version with a clutch pedal. Both offer supreme control, fuel economy and driveability in every situation. The fully automated Scania Opticruise • Faster, smoother gearchanges, giving outstanding comfort and control. • Superior precision thanks to a unique electronic clutch control. • Ultra fine clutch control in extreme situations, such as difficult shunting. Scania Opticruise general features • Driver interface with all functions for gearchanging and retarder control integrated in the right-hand steering wheel lever. • Available in 8, 12 and 12+2 speed versions, the latter also with overdrive. • Adaptive shift strategy based on style of driving, load and inclination of the road. • Comprehensive electronic protection keeps clutch wear to a minimum. • Several parameters can be adjusted by a Scania workshop to tailor the functionality to fit your specific needs.

SCANIA TRANSMISSION OPTIONS

Scania Active Prediction Scania Active Prediction is a unique advanced cruise control system that uses GPS to predict the topography of the road ahead. This enables any driver to achieve a perfectly optimised cruising speed – even on roads never seen before, or in pitch black darkness. By adjusting speed before an ascent or descent, the system contributes to reduce fuel consumption. With Scania Opticruise and Economy mode, up to 5% of fuel can be saved. Scania Active Prediction works seamlessly together with Scania Opticruise and Scania Adaptive Cruise control.

Scania Eco-roll Save fuel and utilise gravity using a new feature available through the Scania Opticruise and Active Prediction. The advanced Scania Eco-roll system automatically calculates the most fuel-efficient way to go downhill, either rolling in neutral or using the engine brake with the fuel supply switched off. The result is a potential fuel saving of up to 2%.

Scania Ecocruise Scania Ecocruise is an optional cruise control saving up to 3% fuel with Scania Opticruise and Economy mode, on trucks fitted with the Scania Retarder. Scania Ecocruise is suitable for routes not covered by the topographical data used by Scania Active Prediction.

Scania Driver Support Scania Driver Support is a system that continuously gives the driver individual hints and feedback on the driving with safety and fuel economy as key parameters. It works in real time during driving and delivers a summary after a completed assignment. The system is designed to work in line with the Scania Driver Training programme in order to reduce wear and maintain a consistently fuel-efficient driving style.

20-21

Scania Retarder The Scania Retarder interacts with the cruise control, exhaust brake and wheel brakes to provide total downhill speed control at the touch of a button or a dab on the brake pedal. Designed with two performance steps, the cruise control and the Scania Retarder provides you with automatic speed control up and down the hills. Retarder braking is either initiated with a dab on the brake pedal, steering wheel buttons or controlled manually with the lever on the steering column. When set to work automatically with the exhaust brake and the service brakes, service brake applications are reduced by up to 75% and brake wear is minimised.

Automatic gearboxes The Scania Opticruise automated gearchanging system handles many applications that used to require an automatic transmission. Some vehicles operating in stop-and-go applications with potentially high clutch wear can still benefit from a fully automatic transmission. These Scania-specified Allison units reduce snatches and shocks, making them well suited for frequent stopping, starting and rapid acceleration. Any Scania engine up to 490 hp can be fitted with an automatic transmission. Options include an integrated retarder and a selection of power take-offs.

Rear axle gears A wide range of Scania axles and axle gears offers minimal frictional losses for any type of application. Of course, exceptional strength and reduced weight are features common to all Scania axles. Lightest of all is a single axle with single reduction for vehicles with 9-litre engines, 230 to 360 hp. At the opposite end is a hub reduction bogie, with a design capacity far in excess of 150 tonnes, for vehicles engaged in the most demanding heavy-haulage operations. Between these extremes, there are axles to suit every need.

Power take-offs Scania power take-offs are available for a wide array of applications. All Scania engines and gearboxes offer various options.
