SBCS Libraries ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS THROUGH ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE BY PROVIDING THE CONVENIENCE OF A WELL DESIGNED FACILITY THAT ENCOURAGES LEARNING AND FACILITATES RELAXATION

Library updates New Library and Study Facilities unveiled at Champs Fleurs campus A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the opening of the newly redesigned SBCS Champs Fleurs Library at its location in our new wing. This contemporary facility stands as a milestone and achievement for SBCS and was officially opened on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, the 26th anniversary of SBCS. Lecturers, staff and students were present for the ceremony.

Carnival Display The Champs Fleurs library celebrated Carnival 2013 with a display that paid homage to the old time carnival characters (Sailor, Jab Molassie, Blue Devil, Moko Jumbie and Fancy Indians). The display was available for viewing at the Champs Fleurs campus from February 4 - 9, 2013.

Easter Egg Hunt Competition The libraries hosted an Easter Egg Hunt competition for full time students on March 26 & 27, 2013 at the San Fernando and Champs Fleurs campuses. Winners:

San Fernando - Team BTEC Business Management (Jynelle Mohammed, Sharika Hollwah, Kimberley Khan) Champs Fleurs - Team BTEC Computing (Ravita Seuraj, Amilio Collymore and Brandon Penjilia)


Library membership The SBCS libraries are registered members with the American Library Association (ALA) and the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT).

Spot the Library User Promotion

Training and Development

The “Spot the Library User” promotion entails taking random pictures of students using our libraries, with one photographed student receiving a token at the end of each month. The promotion is geared towards encouraging students to take advantage of library offerings and thus increase overall awareness of its services and modern facilities.

Allison Providence-Lange and Sharon Beharry (Library Assistants), completed the Introduction to MARC & Descriptive Cataloguing Training from January 14-16, 2013. The Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago facilitated the workshop which consisted of lectures, demonstrations and hands on exercises that covered the following topics: MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloguing)  Rules for bibliographic information and standards for MARC  MARC codes  Creation of MARC records original cataloguing

Library Awareness Week On April 17, 2013, the Champ Fleurs Library hosted Mrs Mariella Pilgrim, Vice President and Ms Karen Eccles, Public Relations Officer from the Library Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT). The visit was part of the SBCS’ Library Awareness Week promotion from April 15-19, 2013. Ms Eccles facilitated a presentation entitled “The need for the physical library” to students at the Champs Fleurs campus. Students from the San Fernando campus also participated in the presentation via video conference. Mrs Pilgrim and Ms Eccles toured the Champs Fleurs Library and commended us not only on its physical facilities, but also the ambiance of its setting. They were also impressed with the Library Awareness display and our promotion of library use to our students.

Study Tips What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is representing the work of other’s as one’s own, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Why is Plagiarism a problem? Plagiarism is viewed as an attempt to gain unfair advantage over other students and instances where plagiarism is detected it is dealt with severely in the academic community. Plagiarism detection software such as Turnitin can check submitted work for incorrectly referenced or misappropriated material. What should I do to avoid Plagiarism? Most instances of plagiarism can be easily avoided by careful and accurate citation of the material you refer to. It is a good practice to use bibliographic software to manage your references throughout the research process.
