WORLD PREMIERE!

DOVER QUARTET WITH MICHAEL TREE & PHILIP DUKES Mendelssohn Quintet No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 87 Charlotte Bray The Sun was Chasing Venus Commissioned by SMF

Brahms String Quintet No. 1 in F Major, Op. 88 The Dover Quartet teams up for a second program with violists Philip Dukes and Michael Tree, featuring two of the greatest works in the string quintet idiom,

Mendelssohn’s B-flat Quintet and the Brahms F Major Quintet. The quartet will also be joined by violist Daniel Lee for the premiere of the SMF commissioned work, “The Sun Was Chasing Venus,” by British composer Charlotte Bray.

ONLY-IN-SAVANNAH DOUBLE BILL!

Daniel Lee, viola | Philip Dukes, viola | Michael Tree, viola | Dover Quartet: Joel Link, violin | Bryan Lee, violin | Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, viola | Camden Shaw, cello

This unique production highlights the foundational similarities and instrumental command of Scottish and Irish music. Representing the Scots are Lau, who will share a double bill with a quartet of Irish players assembled for this occasion. Two members from the Irish supergroup Lúnasa, flute player Kevin Crawford (below right) and Uilleann piper/low whistle player Cillian Vallely (below left), will join renowned Irish guitarist John Doyle, one of the genre’s leading guitar players. These three are joined by fiddle player Duncan Wickel, a participant in SMF’s 2012 Acoustic Music Seminar who is now sought after for his proficiency with an array of musical styles including Irish tunes, jigs and reels.

LAU Brilliant musicians and thrilling performers, it is no small wonder that the Scottish trio Lau (top) is at the center of the new folk boom in the U.K. Master fiddler Aidan O’Rourke hails from Oban, accordion innovator Martin Green comes from East Anglia, England, while Kris Drever is the guitarist/ singer/songwriter from Orkney. SMF is importing the criticallyacclaimed group for a rare U.S. appearance so that festival goers can experience their refreshed approach to contemporary music, arrangements that constantly leap and dip in unexpected contours, and intriguing sounds that could have only originated from Scottish culture.
