Benjo Arwas was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. After spending 5 years in the army he grew a deep appreciation for life. Thirsty to experience the world, he began traveling. It was during these explorations that Benjo first picked up a camera and struck by its power; he bought it and began documenting his travels. Years later, his deep sense of awe and respect for a photograph’s power has not diminished but continues to motivate his creations. Colors, textures, culture, and traditions guide his eye to capture Inspired by light, fashion, and the beauty of human beings, Benjo intends to make the fantasies playing in his imagination real through his lens. European influence, good music, nature, and hours of surfing resonate in his images creating emotion, motion, and personality. For the Princess Mia Pia story, “it was a delight to work with Princess Pia Mia, my friend and makeup artist Anthony Merante brought her to my attention, she was magical in front of the camera, not jaded by the process of Hollywood, amazing attitude and such a talent.” For the Equestrian story, “I called my friend Ray whose horse Q I am trying to kidnap, she will be mine, so gorgeous and sweet, Q was the star of the shoot, every one fell in love with her.” Sal Owen’s work has appeared in ‘New York Magazine’, ‘Dazed and Confused, ‘German GQ”, ‘Flaunt’, Vanity Fair and ID. she is currently working on a body of work for a fine art show, that she has been shooting for years of her children in fashion, also moving into short films, mixing stills, and polaroids for a final project. HOMELESS
S y d n e y D o g s & C at s H o m e uses photography to find owners
Twenty-one photographers have been commissioned to shoot homeless dogs and cats for
the Sydney Dogs & Cats Home in a photography exhibition style campaign that will run in outdoor sites across the city. The campaign was devised by M&C Saatchi, SD&CH’s agency for 10 years. Sixtythree one-off ‘limited edition’ prints will be displayed all around town in AdShel superlites. Signed and numbered by the photographer, the posters have been located in high traffic locations. Adshel is donating $225,000 worth of media to the campaign. The posters will direct passers-by to the SD&CH website where they can view the exhibition and either bid for a print – which is being handled by eBay – adopt the animal in it, or donate to the SD&CH. The campaign will roll out in three phases. After the launch on Monday, phased two, from June 6, will see ‘Sold’ and/or ‘Adopted’ stickers added to the posters as people adopt the animal or buy the artwork.

The final phase, from July 4, will see a new series of prints rolled out showing a group of adopted animals with their new owners in their new homes. SD&CH CEO and Veterinarian Christine Cole said: “We can talk about facts and figures and tell stories but nothing is quite as compelling as putting a face, or in this case 63 faces, forward that beautifully depicts a real, living, breathing animal ready to become a loving member of a family.” The photographers are Juli Balla, Toby Burrows, Terence Chin, Michael Corridore, Tamara Dean, Toby Dixon, Marc Gafen, Florian Groehn, Amelia Hawkins, Gary Heery, Jeremy Hudson, Nic Ingram, Ingvar Kenne, Adrian Lander, Tom Luscombe, Jonathan May, Michael Miller, Ruth O’Leary, Andreas Smetana, Adam Taylor and Julian Wolkenstein. After studying Fine Arts in Barcelona, Yago Partal started a creative studio project with Manel Soto and they spent six years together creating projects for companies like Filmax, Chesterfield International, Sitges Film Festival and Canal+. At the same time, he did some exhibitions of his own from his personal work. After this period, he decided to put the design and illustration aside to focus exclusively on photography and video. He then opened his own studio while continuing to work on his own series. Shortly after, he joined the company DDT SFX (Academy Award for Pan’s Labyrinth) as a conceptual designer doing work for films like Pedro Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In” and J. A. Bayona’s “The Impossible”. Recently he has begun Antonio Gomez’s “Nieve”, a production company where he works as a photographer and filmmaker while continuing his personal work in photography. His latest project “Zoo Portraits,” is a unique project by the Spanish artist Yago Partal, who cleverly depicts animals in outfits their human counterparts

Among the fashion-forward fauna: a carefree koala, wearing a delightfully tacky Hawaiian-style floral shirt; a sloth, apparently ready to go clubbing in a faded v-neck t-shirt and leather jacket; an ostrich, sporting a silk scarf, grey jacket and bowler hat. The animals weren’t actually outfitted in hip threads and forced to sit still for a portrait. Each of the pictures is a composite, reports the Daily Mail, blending a photo of the animal with a illustration of clothing. “This idea emerged as an ad campaign for an online photo gallery,” Partal explained in an email to The Huffington Post. “When I shot the first animals, the pictures got a good reaction, so I decided to continue the series until it became what it is today.” Partal added that he intends to keep adding animals to the gallery and high-resolution prints from the “Zoo Portraits” series can be ordered on the project’s website. FISH
by Frank Gehry Curling and flexing in at t i t u d e s o f s i m u l a t e d m o t i o n
One of the most celebrated architects living today, Gehry’s career spans five decades and three continents. Known for his imaginative designs and creative use of materials, he has forever altered the urban landscape with spectacular buildings that are conceived as dynamic structures rather than static vessels.
Gehry has always experimented with sculpture and furniture in addition to his architectural pursuits, coaxing inventive forms out of unexpected materials, from the Easy Edges (1969–73) and Experimental Edges (1979–82)—chairs and tables carved from blocks of industrial corrugated cardboard—to the Knoll furniture series (1989–92), fashioned from bentwood. The Fish Lamps evolved from a 1983 commission by the Formica Corporation to create objects from the then-new plastic laminate ColorCore. After accidentally shattering a piece of it while working, he was inspired by the shards, which reminded him of fish scales. The first Fish Lamps, which were fabricated between 1984 and 1986, employed wire armatures molded into fish shapes, onto which shards of ColorCore are individually glued, creating clear p.

allusions to the morphic attributes of real fish. The softly glowing Fish Lamps are full of whimsy. As individuals or groupings of two and three, some are fixed to poles or wall sconces, while others can be placed on any existing horizontal surface. Curling and flexing in attitudes of simulated motion, these artificial creatures emit a warm, incandescent light. This intimation of life, underscored by the almost organic textures of the nuanced surfaces, presents a spirited symbiosis of material, form, and function. The first Fish Lamps were shown in “Frank Gehry: Unique Lamps” in 1984 at the former Robertson Boulevard location of Gagosian Los Angeles. Frank Gehry was born in Toronto in 1929. He studied architecture at the University of Southern California and urban planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. ike Ruiz is a worldrenowned photographer, who also happens to be a TV personality, former model, actor, spokesperson, creative director and director. With his wide array of experiences and interests. Like everything he touches, Mike is a man who brings to life the fantastical, which in turn, is inspired by his brilliant optimism. His lens has done a lot of zooming in and out, while the world keeps a keen focus on his high-impact, surreal brand of celebrity and fashion photography. He has successfully branded himself across platforms, including print and video, which expands his appeal in the industry. Mike also cares about animals and puts his passion into action. Here is account of how he met up with an incredibal creature named Oliver. One day in early June, 2012, the person that I share a house with in Los Angeles informed me that he was fostering a pitbull. I didn’t think much about it. I arrived in LA for a shoot shortly there after and was greeted at the front door by the biggest, sweetest brown eyes I had ever seen. He sat at my feet and cocked his head as if to be p.

sizing me up. The rest is a blur. Next thing I knew I was filling out adoption paper work. I didn’t think it possible to have such a profound connection with a creature that cannot speak. He is the love of our lives and melts the hearts of everyone who lays eyes on him. He has become the goodwill ambassador for pitbulls everywhere having co-chaired several fundraisers, appearing on news shows demonstrating animal safety, being photographed for fashion magazines, walking the runway for charity and having his own t-shirt. He is often recognized walking in NYC where people will call from across the street “OLIVER, WE LOVE YOU!” (true story). I shudder at the thought that he might have slipped through the cracks of ignorance before finding his way to us. Olivers story starts out with what should have probably been a very tragic ending. He was just one of many pitbulls on death row in a Los Angeles pound. LA has one of the highest kill rates at shelters. All across cities there are special people, they are called “rescuers”

and they visit the pounds to see which dogs they have room to take on, the worst part of being a rescue is not being able to take them all, the BEST part is to have a Cinderella type ending like Oliver did! Oliver’s rescuer was at a pound to get another dog, and was pulled aside by a volunteer who begged them to please look at a special boy. Black pitbulls are the hardest to place, but once the rescue locked eyes with Oliver, that was it, they couldn’t leave him there. He was pulled and taken to a vet to be checked out and requests on Facebook and donations were raised to cover his medical costs and a friend of a friend saw all of this on Facebook and offered to foster him until a home could be found for him, Little did Oliver know, this foster was a very close friend of fashion and celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz. “Who wants to regain his youth, has only to resume his folly,” wrote Oscar Wilde in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Juveniles has lost neither the first nor the second never stopped. And if you still need to hear that boys will be boys, both French, they, certainly will not see the same thing in the eye: since their debut on the Parisian label Kitsuné pioneer until the arrival of their first album this year, JeanSylvain Le Gouic and Thibaut Doray have drawn their youth shield against boredom, and rollers choruses bulwark against attacks forced into adulthood, formidable, feared pass.
If looking towards Manchester Smiths and New Order, it is on French soil as though the duo launched its first live attacks. An explosive move to Rennes Transmusicales lights the fuse. The festival Inrockuptibles 2012, which devotes its one the same year, fanning the embers. Juveniles shows himself wild, a baffling efficiency, but both surrounded by English Hot Chip with whom they share a donation to shake hips and calves unabated. Because this is where the strength of the group: a mastery of live allowing them all extravagances, an unstoppable intensity and whole energy used to grip the public, never letting go until the leave haggard, brain fusion and exhausted legs. From fiery wisp, the duo then joined a pop blaze that has one thing in mind: to raise the fire cheeks of young people to the pure ideals and reckless insolence.

We Are Young proclaimed casually on their first single released in 2011. More than a collection of bombs to blow pop clubs (Void) Juveniles meets especially twelve tracks all statements of a youth that can pass in a fraction of a second, the total bliss (We Are Young) to more deepest spleens (Washed Away). But rather than drowning in melancholy, the boys prefer tame by making dance (All I Ever Wanted) and counteract the sadness sensuality (Elisa Adriatic), which is the way all eccentricities as the very disco Fantasy. We see the shadow of Smiths hover over Weekend At Mine, on the Blood Orange Summer Night, and the Phoenix on the hymn Strangers proves that Juveniles may be born on the wrong side of the Channel, they do nevertheless remain a full member of a family of French pop musicians who speak fluently without the slightest accent. THE HORSE LAMP Leave it to Moooi to do something so crazy and brilliant. It’s big, it’s black, it’s a horse and did I mention it’s a lamp. Yes. A horse lamp. We fell in love with it right away and had to convince ourselves that we didn’t absolutely need one. What you first have to know about this horse lamp is that it is life-size. At nearly 8 feet tall. But unlike an actual horse, the Moooi horse lamp comes with a lamp shade on its head. It was the best thing we’ve seen in a long time. However, the Moooi horse lamp does a variety of things that at first seem completely extraneous to its basic function. As a lamp, it is a very useful object. Everybody needs lamps. But as a piece of art, it’s cheeky, memorable, naughty, and totally unexpected. In the end, all this other stuff actually does serve a singular purpose: It makes you want it. THE RIHNO CHAIR Because of ts superlative size and presence, The Rhino Chair by artist Maxino Riera is considered more like a throne than a regular chair. Like its predecessor, it contains an inner frame along its body to support its weight and reinforce its balance. Andrew Grant
A ndrew Grant, is known for his work in advertising, fashion,
magazine and portrait photography, is now being nationally recognized for his special photography of dogs as subjects. Andrew’s images have been featured in hundreds of advertisements, magazines, books and product packaging. Andrew attended the renowned Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. The Institute is regarded as one of the top three photography colleges in the world. Andrew’s philosophy is that “great shots rarely just happen and that skilled photographers don’t rely on luck to get the shot”. While Andrew continues his commercial photography, his attention now also includes capturing the beauty, grace and souls of all types of dogs—big, small, purebred and mixed, and most importantly, shelter rescues. His first book, Rover was featured on national television shows including The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Extra. Andrew began production of the second book, Rover Woof Edition when the first edition sold out in just a few months. Andrew raised over $300,000 for rescues while producing the Bow Wow Edition of Rover in 2012. Andrew will be producing a fourth and final edition of Rover in 2013.

We asked Andrew to tell us more about Rover and his prosses. What made you decide to do the Rover project? In early 2009 I learned about the staggering number of cats and dogs that are euthanized each and every year. Adding to the crisis, the economy was a crashing and people were surrendering their healthy pets to shelters because they couldn’t afford them anymore. I’ve always loved animals, so I decided to try to help. Just two weeks later I began production of Rover with the hope that I’d be able to raise money for and bring awareness to pet rescues. I was very fortunate that Ellen DeGeneres featured the book on her show just nine months later. Her support gave the project a tremendous amount of momentum and this year we’ll raise over one million dollars for rescues throughout the country. What is Rover To The Rescue? Rover to the Rescue is tool that presents organizations with an extraordinary and unique way to raise money for pet rescues. We select about 20 lucky organizations around the country that are able to offer the Rover book opportunity to prospective donors to immortalize their dog while helping homeless pets. Rover to the Rescue’s mission is to educate the pubic that there are happy, healthy, loving pets living in rescues and to check your local facility first when looking to bring issue

a dog or cat into your home. And the other objective of Rover to the Rescue is to educate the public about the importance of spay and neutering animals – otherwise, the overpopulation problem continues to grow. What’s your goal during each shoot? I try to capture the unique personality of each dog. The owner is in the studio with us and we all view the proofs together. I value their feedback when selecting the images that will be used in the book. Although many view any picture of a panting dog as a smiling dog, I look for expression in the dog’s eyes, forehead and ears Have you been charged or growled at? During the last four years I’ve photographed well over 500 dogs and I received my first growl while photographing a little 4 or 5 pound white dog appropriately named, “Tiger.” I was warned that he was a biter before the shoot, but after tossing him several treats, he simmered down. The owner later shared a story about Tiger’s criminal record. Apparently, he received a violation from a police department in Florida for excessive barking and charging after a contractor working at the home. Any great moments you’ll always remember? rescue stories that stick with me. There are dogs in the book that were once used as bait or in fighting rings and have been completely rehabilitated. I think those are the stories inspire me to continue this project by showing that these dogs still love humans and are so forgiving even after the harm brought upon them by prior owners. Are certain breeds easier to photograph than others? Most of the time, we don’t know what the actual breed of the dog is because the majority of them are a mix of everything, but any dogs that are afraid of lighting can be a struggle because of the large flash of the catch light. Although 99% of dogs don’t seem to notice the flash firing, I’ve had four yellow labs who have bolted off the set after just one or two flashes. People must glamorize your job: you take photos of cute animals. What are some tricky parts that people wouldn’t expect? It’s a lot of fun meeting so many pet advocates across the country and photographing their dogs to help raise money for rescues. Traveling with, setting up and tearing down the extraordinary amount of studio equipment needed to photograph the dogs isn’t as much fun, but it’s all worth it. Where did you begin? I worked in real estate property management in my 20’s but followed my lifelong passion for photography by enrolling in Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara about 12 years ago. I’ve been working as a commercial, advertising, fashion and portrait photographer since 2005. Do you enjoy the business side of things?
