Born in 1992, Rakeem Cunningham fashion/ portrait photographer residing in Los Angeles. His work aims to capture the essence of the subject. Rakeem incorporates different forms of light and locations to bring the subject to life, While his personal work explores themes of self-discovery.

As a young boy I was always surrounded by photography in some way. I would look through my grandparents old photos fascinated by how pictures were made. I always had a camera in my hand, constantly taking photographs of anything and everything. Today, I’ve turned my childhood passion, fascination and natural curiosity into the work that I love. Combining my art with my other interests such as fashion, music and travel is where I find the complete happiness.

Sal works regularly on the East Coast but lives in Los Angeles.

ur Men’s Issue is admittedly one of my favorites to produce. In it, we offer 6 fashion stories by Sal Owen, Mike Nguyen, Rakeem Cunningham, Irvin Rivera, Gregory Keith Metcalf and Dhrumil Desai. The magazine also focuses on discovering new photographers, models, designers, writers and the insight into life of real people. Some of our grooming features such as The Art Of Shaving incite, Tom Ford’s new men’s skin care line and a hair story shot by Frank Louis. I was immediately drawn to the photo project by Djak Azran that features very masculine men. Learn more about designer Ashton Hirota’s Ashton Michael fall 2013 collection. We also have an amazing sports figure feature on Michael Coe by Frank Louis. Just to name a few of the amazing stories in this issue. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. lectronic grand wizard, Francesco ‘Phra’ Barbaglia, AKA Crookers releases his brand new single, ‘Ghetto Guetta’ via his own imprint Ciao Records this October. Renowned for his hi octane, no holds barred live shows and productions, this incendiary release looks certain to set the autumn season ablaze. ‘Ghetto Guetta’ goes back to the old school formula that gave Crookers its imitable sound. Recorded on Phra’s laptop across various cities including LA, Lugano and Milan, it showcases the trademark upbeat techno bounce and playful house beats we have all come to know and love. The stellar remix package comes courtesy of rising stars from the Ciao Records stable, DILLIGAS and Skitzofrenix. Crookers last release; ‘Giga A Go Go’ out earlier this year garnered kudos from fans and peers alike racking over 60,000 plays on Sound Cloud. His remix of Kid Cudi’s ‘Day ‘N Nite’ reached #2 on the UK sales chart and Crookers’ debut album, ‘Tons of Friends’ featured an all-star lineup that included Miike Snow, Pitbull and Major Lazer. Not one to rest on his laurels, Phra has already begun work on his next album planned for 2014. Crookers.net

M A L E K FA R H AT CLASSICO

W hen I realized that most of my collection of watches had shifted toward divers and sports watches, I started to keep an eye out for something a little more elegant — something that might be slightly more at home with dress shirt than a 15mm high piece of military equipment or a plastic digital. The problem was that I refuse to sacrifice functionality for looks. I love handsome watches. and I found the right one in the Malek Farhat Classico watch. The design is simplicity at its best with the noir face, stainless steel case and Japanese movement.

Founded in 2009 by Canadian designer Malek Farhat, his jewelry brand is synonymous with luxury and is recognized for its unique and sophisticated creations.

Each design is made with great artistic sense resulting in prestigious and refined jewelry. The collection of original creations features diamonds, precious metals, gemstones including; pearl, sapphire, bakelite, tourmaline, rose quartz, emerald, ruby and black onyx, to name a few. Inspired by the themes of ancient eras and cultures, the creations reflect a modern and sophisticated style with a touch of timeless glamour. The company is based in Montreal, Canada and is sold in over 28 countries. The new launch follows the success of the designer’s debut cosmetics line for women, which was released in 2011. Fashion-forward gents aren’t the only men embracing cosmetics. The mixed-martial arts crowd, including star Chuck Liddell, has helped popularize the use of men’s nail polish, which they use on their fight-worn fingernails. And manicures have become more commonplace on Wall Street. According to high-end grooming club owner John Allen, “Today, I think men understand it’s just good grooming.” But Tom Ford for Men will likely be far more upscale than most products men are used to. W e asked Brittany, a 3 year Master Barber at The Art Of Shaving, to share his tips on how to prepare for a night out.

BEFORE HEADING OUT THE DOOR IT’S IMPORTANT TO LOOK YOUR BEST. WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE GETTING READY TO GO OUT THIS WEEKEND? Before a big night out, make sure to clip your nails and trim any stray nose or ear hairs, as well as your eyebrows. And of course, be sure to shave or style your facial hair. Don’t underestimate these little details – they help pull your look together. IF YOU ARE IN A HURRY WHEN GETTING READY, DO YOU HAVE ANY TIME-SAVING TIPS? Skip the shower... just kidding, always shower! In fact, shaving in the shower is a great way to save some time. IF YOU WANT TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING CLOSE THIS WEEKEND, WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR ACHIEVING A CLOSE SHAVE THAT IS SMOOTH TO THE TOUCH? Set some time aside so that you can give yourself a proper shave. Make sure that your beard is sufficiently steamed, either by taking a hot shower first or applying a hot wet towel to your face. Then apply some pre-shave oil, shaving cream, and shave your face twice. First, shave with the grain of the hair, and then re-lather and shave against the grain for a closer shave. Apply our after-shave mask, and then finish with a cold splash of water and a dab of after-shave balm. Your skin will feel amazing! WHEN YOU GET CLOSE TO SOMEONE, IT’S IMPORTANT TO SMELL NICE. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE AROMA? I love the warm, woody aroma of our sandalwood eau de toilette. And gentlemen, we’ve heard a rumor that no lady can resist the masculine scent of sandalwood! ANY SPECIAL TIPS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ON HOW TO ACHIEVE A CLOSE AND COMFORTABLE SHAVE? I always advise my clients to shave with the grain of their facial hair. Then, re-lather and shave against or across the grain for a closer shave. If you’re unsure what direction your hair grows, lightly rub your face and the direction that your hair grows will feel the smoothest. Shave in this direction – with the grain – first. The opposite direction should feel the roughest, which is against the grain. Keep in mind that your beard likely changes directions in different areas of your face and neck. TheArtOfShaving.com no.

D J A K A Z R A N photography DJAK AZRAN

Through the years Djak has collaborated with many more of the top fashion designers. Djak, now, resides in Los Angeles, where he is pursuing his passion. We sat down with Djak to discuss what was his intent with these very handsome and masculane images. WHY WOULD A WOMEN’S FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER SHOOT A MEN’S SERIES? DA : Well, when I was first offered to shoot the series I thought “Meh”. Early in my career I had to shoot men so my portfolio showed diversity but I quickly geared towards women’s fashion and especially haute couture. To me, dangling a girl in a big red dress, from a helicopter with a gun in her hand has more impact than that same picture but with a guy in a suit, which is almost expected. I was never able to imagine a “mise en scene” in men’s fashion that I found exciting enough to want to capture. So I procrastinated. Offered the series to other photographers; tried to find a concept, a story; and a year p.

036

issue

In my fashion work, the challenge would be to find a girl who isn’t afraid of heights, the perfect dress, the gun and the helicopter. So for men I was going do the opposite. The challenge was now to catch their masculinity with no “artifice”. No make-up. No hair. No styling. No lights. No intricate scenery or amazing locations. Just the sun; a scruffy man; my camera; my eye and still try to create an image worthy of an ad campaign. My subjects are regular guys. They range from a forensic psychiatrist to Emmy winner to student. None of them have any modeling background and still, Voila! ISN’T RETOUCHING AN ARTIFICE? DA : No. That’s debatable of course, but personally I don’t think it is. To me that’s no different than if I was shooting a 19-year old girl who just flew in from Tokyo via Rio; who shows up on set jet lagged, with bags under her eyes and blemishes on her face. If retouching is the norm for that 19-year old girl even after 2 hours of makeup and a fully tricked out lighting that 3 assistants ran around for 2 hours to perfect, then I’m ok with retouching a regular scruffy man I shot on the street after their work day with no lighting equipment. People nowadays are either unaware or seem to forget that we retouched pictures even when we used to shoot on film. Every magazine cover since the early 70’s is retouched. It just used to be hand painted at the time. Photoshop didn’t create anything, it just expanded our capacities. I don’t consider that “cheating”, it’s the norm in my industry. Ultimately if the guy isn’t in front of me with that look on his face, I can’t capture it. Period. But let me give you a better example: You’re a handsome, well groomed man. If I were to take your picture right now and publish it tomorrow, no offense, but would you like

He was discovered by Jean Paul Gaultier at the age of 16, and brought into his team as a stylist. At 18, Djak signed with The Face magazine in London, while studying photography at The London College of Fashion. At 21, Djak was hired by Christophe Carrere to art direct fashion shows for multiple designers including Christian Dior and Balenciaga. The next year Djak joined the LVMH Group and is assigned to John Galliano’s team to revamp Givenchy.

later nothing was done. One day I decided to strip the whole thing down. I thought: “I shouldn’t have to create an image of masculinity. It’s already there. Let’s see if I can capture it instead of creating it”. That became my challenge.

me to keep your eye bags and that zit on your chin? I WOULD NOT, NO. DA : See? You didn’t even hesitate. You know in my 20 years career I’ve often noticed that the people who complain about retouching are never the ones on the pictures and if they were, they would need retouching the most. Isn’t that telling? Truth is you don’t always look this way. On a good day, you would be well rested with better skin and you would get a better picture hence less retouching. Well it’s the same with my models, I retouch them as if I had caught them at their best. I don’t see anything wrong with that. If you, yourself, don’t want to see your own tired, pimply face in a magazine, then why would I ? POINT TAKEN! WAS WORKING WITH THE SUN AS YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF LIGHT A CHALLENGE? DA : You bet! And not just for me, but for the model. The guys had an extremely narrow range of movement. Any drastic change in their position would create shadows that I had no reflector to attenuate. So I had to use these shadows to square off jaws or thin out noses. Used a wide array of lenses to compensate other aspects. It was almost like sculpting with light and shadows. The guys were often in unnatural positions and since they couldn’t really move, I had to move around them to get the shot. I also had to constantly measure my lighting, while adjusting my focus and compose my framing. It kept me on my toes the whole time, but I like that. I’m not sure how enjoyable it was for p.

the guys, as I’m sure I looked and sounded odd, but I love the results and I believe they do too. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE SERIES ONCE YOU HAVE SHOT ALL THE IMAGES ? DA : Well, after shooting only 7 images, the publisher of the magazine I was originally shooting for, first added 10 double pages to the 20 he had previously asked for. A few days later he gave me the cover, then went on to offer me the Editor in Chief position at a new men’s art/ fashion/lifestyle magazine he is launching called “Hirsute Magazine”, in which the series will now appear instead. Hirsute is a bi-annual, 300 pages glossy with a limited edition of 500 hard copies. It will have several art series from different photographers, illustrations, a couple of fashion series and a few articles. It will be more of a photography book than a typical magazine for men. The first volume will come out January 2014. This is all very new as I accepted the position just a few days ago. So I can’t really reveal anything yet but I have reached out to some of my friends and colleagues within the industry for content. The response has been overwhelming so I feel confident about the project and am expecting to have some incredibly talented contributing editors that I love and respect for their work and ethics. What else could I ask for?! SomeFrenchGuy.com

ERNESTO

ARTILLO

S

ix Lee teamed up with Spanish artist Ernesto Artillo to create this beautiful collage work using the SS14 collection. Ernesto Artillo, signature fashion illustration style uses entirely collaged images, merging fashion imagery with anything from flowers, cliffs, renaissance paintings or architectural structures, to create a beautifully surrealist outcome. Inspired by the abstract artist, Niko Luoma, SS14 collection is mainly focused on showing the complicated feeling between to love oneself or not to love at all. Gun, knife and ghost are three main symbolic elements in developing the print for this collection. These represent the feeling of being hurt and getting pain. Different shades of blue have also been used for developing the color, which represents the sophisticated mood and emotion deep inside of our heart. SixLee.be Ernesto-Artillo.blogspot.com p.
