MARXISM ON THE HUNGER GAMES CONTENT ANALYSIS

The Hunger Games ďƒź composed of novels by Suzanne Collins

comprising of The Hunger Games(2008), Catching Fire(2009) and Mockingjay(2010). ďƒź Only the first two novels were adapted into movies yet which were aired last 2012 and 20113, respectively, and both were directed by Gary Ross.

Statement of the Study The study would analyze the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins in terms of the Marxist Criticism. In analyzing, it will consider these questions: 1. Are these elements, themes, conflict, plot, characters and settings, made it plausible to the use of Marxist approach? 2. What are the occurrences, specifically, scenes. Statements and actions through the story which could be identified Marxistically? 3. What are the terms of Marxism that have equivalent terms in the Hunger Games story? 4. In a general view, does Marxism apply to the three books, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay? If not, in what book it does appear strongly or less?


Objectives 1. Analyze the Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins in terms of its political, social, and economical features using Marxist criticism. 2. Identify the occurrences in the story which “dramatizes several central tenets of Marxist theory” (Evins, 2013). 3. Examine the cause and effect of events in the story according to Marxism. 4. Pinpoint and extract terms of Marx which has equivalence to Collins’ terms coined in the story for better understanding of the analysis of the story.


Significance of the Study The study will serve as: 1. another critical analysis of a significant literary piece, the Hunger Games trilogy; 2. guide to students on doing another criticism on different literary piece 3. a useful related study for those who are going to analyze the same story using different perspective or use the same but beyond the limitations of this study.


SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY The study is going to be the content analysis of the Hunger games trilogy: The Hunger Games Catching Fire and Mockingjay using Marxist criticism. Only the themes, plot, characters, conflict and setting will be focused as the source of the content. There will be no inclusion of any real world events along the process. In using the Marxist approach, only these features of the story will be highlighted- politics, economy, individuals, society and history.

Methodology The study will analyze the Hunger Games trilogy using Marxist criticism. The instruments to be used in the study are library books, journals and pdfs about The Hunger Games, Marxism and related studies. The three novels of Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay will serve as the corpus.


Procedure These elements of the story will be the focus of the study: themes, plot, conflict, characters and settings. Thus, these will be used in content analyzing of the story. The data will be chosen according to what the study needed. A lot of reading should be done in interpreting and analyzing the story so to get the data to be analyzed. The data will be analyzed according to Marxist theories.
