INTRODUCTION The School of Nursing has a proud and rich history as a primary provider of superior nursing education in the province of Saskatchewan, with a reputation that is recognized provincially, nationally and internationally. The School of Nursing has been a leader in quality nursing education for registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, registered nurse/nurse practitioners and licensed practical nurses for 48 years. The School of Nursing continues to innovate, expand capacity and establish new programming to meet the needs of students, nurses and employers. This past year, the School of Nursing completed the delivery of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s first degree program - the Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing. We were delighted to celebrate this historical event with the first two graduates who convocated in June. We celebrated with the graduates of the first cohort of the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBScN), a program offered in partnership with the University of Regina. In addition, we launched the Collaborative Nurse Practitioner Program in partnership with the University of Regina. This partnership for the delivery of an online Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) program is unique in Canada and a first for the School of Nursing. The School of Nursing celebrated remarkable achievements in 2014-15 and contributed significantly to the advancement of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s vision and strategic directions. Our impressive team of 235 expert faculty and staff demonstrated dedication and commitment to providing quality education in a supportive and student-friendly environment. Fifteen innovative and awardwinning programs were offered to more than 3,600 students using on-campus, print distance, videoconferencing and online delivery. Achieving our priority of putting students first resulted in improved student-centred learning and increased student engagement and success. We look forward to continued success as we focus our efforts on the achievement of four strategic themes of making successful careers possible, advancing economic and social prosperity, pursuing excellence in program quality and innovation, and leading organizational effectiveness. Sincerely,

Dr. Netha Dyck Dean, School of Nursing Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Anticipate and respond aggressively to programming needs of employers Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBScN) program delivered in partnership with the University of Regina • Delivered all four years of the SCBScN program in Regina and Saskatoon. • Implemented Year 2 of the SCBScN program in Swift Current with a cohort of eight students. •  Celebrated with the first graduates of the program in August 2014, with 20 graduates in Regina and 35 graduates in Saskatoon. Two new courses, NURS 1679 Clinical Decision-making for Additional Authorized Practice and NURS 1682 Clinical Decision-making lab, will be offered fall 2015.

GOAL

Ensure the learning environment supports program and student requirements Pet therapy dogs visited students before they completed their Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). • The SCBScN program at Saskatoon campus implemented an innovative strategy to assist students in reducing their anxiety prior to their OSCEs. While waiting for their scheduled times to complete their OSCEs, students were given the option to spend time with therapy dogs. The feedback from students was very positive and resulted in a noticeable reduction in anxiety. A yoga session was provided for students before they completed their OSCEs. SCBScN professional services staff at the Saskatoon campus provided students and faculty with packages of goldfish crackers with inspirational messages during the “hit the wall” period.

SCBScN students take part in pet therapy.

• Inspirational messages were delivered with packages of Goldfish crackers in each classroom by the professional services team. Students’ initial reactions of surprise quickly changed to smiles of gratitude. One class of students exchanged their inspirational quotes with each other and placed their messages on their binders for continued inspiration. Students were pleased to know that all members of the SCBScN team cared about them and their success in the program.

5

The Psychiatric Nursing team hosted a potluck lunch and provided students with a care package during the “hit the wall” period. • The care package consisted of food items, along with self-care items. As well, sixword memoirs were posted focusing on positive coping mechanisms. Students were informed that supportive resources are available. The concepts of resiliency and self-efficacy, which are critical concepts in psychiatric nursing, were reinforced. Perioperative Nursing programs’ “Welcome to the Program” video. • This video was necessitated because students in these programs do not attend classes on campus and expressed apprehension about studying online. It incorporates specific themes that were of concern for students initiating online study, and addresses each point using a lighthearted approach to foster a relaxed atmosphere for learners. Student feedback has been positive and demonstrates the video is an effective strategy to engage new learners. Practical Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing programs hosted information sessions for incoming students in May/June. Aboriginal Nursing Student Achievement Program (ANSAP) advisors provided individualized counselling and follow-up for Aboriginal applicants.
