Stress awareness at SASH

As part of the well being initiative, anyone at SASH has the opportunity to attend one of a series of half day stress awareness workshops exploring practical approaches to stress relief.

Smokefree SASH

SASH is supporting Stoptober, the national stop smoking campaign, which provides advice and support to anyone keen to give up smoking.

The Mental Health Promotion Team at South London and Maudsley (SLAM) NHS Foundation Trust, participants will explore some of the stresses currently facing staff and develop practical skills to support themselves through these challenging times.

Statistics show that if you give up smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to give up for good. Our aim is for SASH to be smokefree by April 2018. Our Smokefree SASH campaign plans are being finalised and include support for you if you want to quit smoking and ways we can help our patients to quit and avoid smoking onsite at East Surrey Hospital.

Three ways to fight flu this winter... Get your vaccination

1

Wash your hands

2

Having your flu jab protects you and those around you. It’s a serious illness that can result in death. The vaccine is up to 70 per cent effective, depending on the strains of flu circulating each year. So be a flu fighter and have the jab.

As well as getting your jab, you can help reduce the spread of flu by regularly washing your hands, particularly after sneezing or coughing. You can pass flu on without having any symptoms.

3

Stay away If you have flu, stay away from work until you are better. The virus is highly infectious and outbreaks can happen quickly.

Our annual flu immunisation programme has begun capture all staff working on shift patterns and rotations. Look out for more information, times and locations of clinics available on e-Bulletin, SASHnet news, posters and Insight magazine.

It is important that all healthcare professionals protect themselves by having the flu vaccine, and in doing so reduce the risk of spreading the flu virus to their patients, clients, colleagues and family members.

Each person who has the flu vaccination will be entered into a prize draw. There are many prizes including: an iPad, first prize. A £100 gift voucher, second prize, A £50 gift voucher, third prize and a £25 gift voucher, fourth prize. There will also be one free half hour session with the holistic therapist based at East Surrey Hospital.

Please help reduce the risk of a flu outbreak. The occupational health team are running the flu vaccinations programme of roving clinics which will be available throughout SASH every day for the first two weeks of the season from 9 October until 20 October 2017.

As well as recognition for the support of the vaccination clinics there will be a choice of gift vouchers to the value of £25 to all flu nurse volunteers who vaccinate 50 members of staff.

Times and dates of these sessions will vary to

Kaizen open day

+ +

On 12 September we welcomed visitors to our first SASH+ Kaizen open day. Hosted by Michael Wilson CBE, chief executive, Sue Jenkins, director of kaizen; the kaizen promotion office (KPO) team and teams across East Surrey Hospital the day was an opportunity for other NHS organisations to come and hear about our SASH+ transformation successes.

On each genba they met SASH colleagues, including Amanda Becker, AMU; Becky Morris, medical records; Mary Tuke, diagnostic imaging; Mina Dris, Bletchingly Ward; Rebecca Dunsterville and Sam Bandyopadhyay, Newdigate Ward; Lisa Jones and Soumya Philip, outpatients, who have all been involved in our value streams and Lean for Leaders course. Where they had the chance to hear about their ideas; the changes that have been made and the difference this is making to both patients and colleagues.

The event was well attended with people from Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust; Royal Surrey county Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; NHS Resolution (previously NHS Litigation Authority); NHS Improvement and local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG’s).

Newdigate Ward Bletchingly Ward

‘I found the day really inspirational - it gave a fantastic insight into the improvement work you have been doing…which is having a positive impact on patients and also on staff.’

“My thanks to you and all the SASH colleagues who contributed to such an interesting day yesterday. I really did develop my understanding of SASH+ and so enjoyed listening to the energised way in which staff talked about improvements which had been made.”

They also heard in more detail about the Lean for Leaders course from recent graduates: Branita Mills; David Heller; Suzanne Lamm; Chris O’Connor; Anna Wickenden; Ben Mearns and Nicola Shopland. “We receive many requests from other organisations who are keen to come and visit SASH to find out more about our SASH+ work,” explained Sue Jenkins, director of kaizen. “We are now planning to host regular Kaizen open days each quarter so that we can share our successes and give people a chance to find out more without needing to make lots of different plans for visitors.”

Following an introduction to SASH+, our partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute (VMI) and NHS Improvement and the improvement methodology our guests were then taken to visit the KPO wall before heading off to seven genbas (the place where the work is done):

+ Outpatients + Medical Records + Acute Medical Unit + Diagnostic Imaging

The next Kaizen open day is 14 December. ‘Capturing energy is always key and it appears you are onto a winner in that area.’

Sam and her greyhound Chris, aged eight, visit the hospital every Sunday afternoon to allow Chris to meet patients. Sam and Chris became involved with Pets as Therapy (PAT) charity in August 2016. PAT provide therapeutic visits to hospitals, hospices, care homes and schools by volunteers with their own friendly dogs.

reward him as we’re going around, they are a compromise as he does occasionally eye up the patients’ biscuits.”

The companionship of a pet is often something that patients miss the most and a visit from a PAT dog can offer comfort and company.

Victoria Daley, deputy chief nurse, said: “We receive a lot of positive feedback from patients about PAT dogs. The visits have such a positive impact on the physiological and psychological wellbeing of patients and we really appreciate that Samantha and Chris give up their spare time to visit the hospital.”

Samantha said: “I love seeing the pleasure on people’s faces when we visit – not just the patients but their families and the staff as well. Chris is very chilled out about it all. He is happy to have a fuss made and to be patted lots. I always have treats of some kind in my bag to

At SASH, apprenticeships are available to new staff and they can also be used for career development of substantive staff. This is an excellent way to develop staff who want to continue to work for SASH in a new role. If you are interested in using an apprenticeship to develop your career pathway be sure to mention it at your next achievement review.

Further information on apprenticeships can be found on the education and training pages of SASHnet or you can contact Dawn Huish, widening participation advisor on x 2201 or Academy@sash.nhs.uk
