TALKING TECH

TALKING TECH When we talked to our division leaders—Mr. Bruce, Mrs. Nezzer (’81), and Dr. Stephenson—about the role technology plays in the classroom, it was clear they all believe in its power to transform the learning process for the better. Here are a few ways they describe technology’s role in support of students at St. Andrew’s.

KAMA BRUCE HEAD OF LOWER SCHOOL FOUNDATIONAL I’m reading a lot of research about this topic right now. Teachers need to see technology as foundational, not additive. If it’s not part of their initial plan it probably doesn’t belong in it. I ask teachers to tell me where they see the power in the tool they want to use. If you can’t articulate ‘why’ then it’s not necessary.

SOCIAL We need to preserve and amplify the social aspect of education. Technology can help us do this by allowing students to cross time and space to engage with other students and broaden their perspective. There is a huge SEL component to this as well. We don’t want to simply have students camp out with a tool. We want them to remain engaged with the human element, collaborate with each other. We can’t forget the social element students need as they mature.

TRANSFORMATIVE Kids find joy in making meaning and trying new roles. An effective tool for them is transformative—it doesn’t simply enable consumption, it allows students to create new materials and ideas. It would be wonderful for a student to see a flower growing,

have a teacher grab a tablet to begin illustrating what’s going on there, and then suddenly open up a whole new world of questions that students then can explore…perhaps even collaborate with other students to create their own flower based on what they learned.

ALICE NEZZER (’81) HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRENT Three years ago we started the 1:1 program for grades 7–8. The

netbooks we’ve been using have limited capabilities and substantial wear and tear, so it’s time to update them. We had a group of students— our “Tech Testers”—try-out 4 different devices over the course of 3 weeks and provide an analysis on which device is best. The Tech Testers were actually surprised by their findings; they presumed one device would be the best, and it was actually one of the worst. A few of the students gave a presentation of their findings to Director of Technology Matt Lipstein.

TALKING TECH

APPROPRIATE All seventh-graders take a Technology class led by Doug Alford, in which they learn skills like programming and composing emails, and appropriate online behavior to avoid potentially harmful situations (like malware and identity theft). On Wednesdays, Doug gives Tech Talks to all seventh- and eighth-graders on digital citizenship, which also includes appropriate use of smartphones and social media. We’ve had guest speakers (like police officers and the attorney general) come speak about consequences from inappropriate or illegal use of technology as well. BALANCED Smartphones are everywhere now, and we know students can use them to access information and stay in touch with parents. But we want to be sure students are staying engaged with each other, so during dances, fun nights, even off-campus trips, we collect the cell phones and allow only intermittent use. The students don’t resist it like you think they would, they don’t mind it. I think the culture is shifting now to where students understand that they don’t need their phone all the time.

TODD STEPHENSON HEAD OF UPPER SCHOOL INTEGRAL

INSPIRATIONAL

At the Upper School, educational technology is integrated into the curriculum, and you’ll find it being used regularly in most classrooms. St. Andrew’s was one of the first schools in Central Texas to implement a one-to-one (1:1) program. Initially, there were concerns that giving every student a laptop would change the teacher-student dynamic in the classroom dramatically, but that hasn’t happened.

There are quite a few pilot programs being tested in the class right now, which is exciting. Teachers see what others are using in the classroom and are inspired; there’s no topdown directive that they have to use certain tools. I notice that there is a shift towards hands-on problem solving in the class. We’ve been doing it for awhile in Robotics, Engineering, and Set Design classes, but that approach is spreading into other classes too.

INTERDISCIPLINARY

POWERFUL As a history teacher, the ability to access world-class resources—like the Library of Congress—from our Austin classroom is so powerful. The quality databases our students have access to now is at the university level. With so much information out there, it’s also important to teach students how to perform searches for reliable information, and understand that Google is not the sole source of all information.

We’re in an environment where teachers are really passionate about their subject matter and love discussing it outside the classroom with students and other teachers in other subjects. This collaboration would be great to facilitate through our physical space with the right tools. I attended the NAIS conference in Boston recently, and I’m excited to learn more about makerspaces and what successful STEM/STEAM classes look like.

TECH CHECK-UP

TIME FOR A TECH CHECKUP

Greetings!

Since joining the St. Andrew’s team in July as the Director of Technology, one of my main goals has been to understand how student learning is achieved in each division, and then strategize how technology can be a tool to aid in that process. I’m pleased to report that St. Andrew’s is working from a very strong foundation. Our access to technology is excellent (read further for plans to expand that access next year). Also, our technology infrastructure and support are extremely strong. Perhaps most importantly, our students and faculty possess a strong belief that technology has incredible potential to improve learning in our school. Visit a classroom in any division and you’ll find many bright spots of exceptional technology use. The major goal for the 2015–16 school year is to establish a creative and innovative environment that will foster purposeful, thoughtful, and transformational uses of educational technology, driven by student needs. The work of the Technology Department will be to partner with teachers and students to weave exceptional use of technology into the fabric of what we do on a daily basis at our school. To meet this goal, four major initiatives will take root by the start of the next school year:

A. We will extend our one-to-one (1:1) device

program to include grades 1–3. This means that every St. Andrew’s student will have a dedicated device they will use to accomplish their learning goals.

B. We will refresh the 1:1 devices used by Middle School students. The device selection will

6 •  St. Andrew’s Episcopal School •  www.sasaustin.org

be informed by student feedback gathered through a “Tech Testers” club where 12 students tested and rated a variety of devices over the course of this year’s winter trimester. N ote: We will provide extensive support and training to faculty on how to best leverage these tools to help students learn. The goal we work toward is for the technology to support the curriculum, and provide transformational learning opportunities that would not be possible without purposeful use of the tools.

C. We’ve expanded our Technology Department to include a full-time Upper School Curriculum & Technology Innovator who will partner with teachers next year to instruct and inspire their use of technology in their classes.

D. We will launch our fully integrated website

which will feature all new tools for students, teachers and parents to use. The new site will be a simple interface that will feature class pages, assignments and grade reporting tools as well as customized personalized calendars and intuitive communication tools. The website will act as a one-stop-shop for parents and students who will be able to navigate all of their academic, athletic and general St. Andrew’s activities—simplifying and streamlining day-to-day life. There will be extensive training for students, parents and faculty on how to use the new website. We are looking forward to a marked improvement to everyone’s overall online experience.

It’s an exciting time for technology at St. Andrew’s! I am excited and humbled to be part of the evolution of technology here, and I look forward to partnering with teachers, students and faculty in a learning environment centered around excellence.

Matt Lipstein

TECHNOLOGY

TEACHERS GET TECH BOOST WITH “DOUBLE SHOTS” Each Tuesday all St. Andrew’s faculty and staff receive a newsletter from the Technology Department called the “Technology Double Shot.” It contains two easily digestible pieces of technology information, that can be useful for teachers to know about or use with students. Tom Costas, our Lower School Athletic Director, says: “The Double Shot has earned two thumbs up from this faculty member! I’ve learned tips I can put into practice as well as information that is ‘fun’ to know!” Click here to see an archive of all the Technology Double Shots.

TECH TESTERS: STUDENT DRIVEN RESEARCH FOR NEW TECHNOLOGY During this year’s winter term, Middle School Educational Technology Coordinator Doug Alford worked with eighth-grader and Student Council President Robert MacDougall to lead a small team of Middle School students in “Tech Testers,” a club devoted to testing and ultimately recommending appropriate technology tools for Middle School students. “When I ran for Student Council President,” says Robert, “my platform included an effort to improve technology in the Middle School. Tech Testers was a way to try new computers and tablets to see which products worked best in the classroom. We betatested a number of different products from four different technology companies: tablets, laptops, combo laptops with keyboards and touchscreen combinations. Surprisingly, the combination laptops had the best results.” Currently netbooks (which are small laptops) are used in Middle School classes. Products were tested in a variety of classes during the winter trimester. The result of Tech Testers’ good work came in the form of a presentation to Director of Technology Matt Lipstein, who is currently reviewing the team’s efforts and considering their feedback for future purchases for Middle School student learning.

NEW TECH ROLE AT UPPER SCHOOL Josh Nelson has been a great resource of knowledge and enthusiasm as the Middle School’s math teacher. But starting next year, he will transition to a new role as the Curriculum and Technology Innovator at the Upper School. In this new role, Josh will be leading the Upper School faculty in creating 21st-century classrooms through the use of educational technology and a variety of tools, approaches, and spaces. Josh’s passion for innovation is matched only by his passion for teaching at St. Andrew’s, which makes him a great fit for this new role. Head of School Sean Murphy remarks, “Josh is a gifted educator. Teaching for him is not about transmitting a body of knowledge, but about a mindset. He challenges people to ask better questions and to solve more complicated problems. He is creative, imaginative, playful and smart. Because technology makes information so easily available, Josh is focused on his relationships with students and the development of their skills. He is an extremely versatile craftsman and can work with everything from digital printers to wood chisels and handsaws.” Josh is currently a Ph.D. candidate in STEM Education, and we’re excited to see where he leads us next year!

TECH 101

TECH IOI: CLASS IN Chances are your student’s classroom looks very different from the one you remember. What are the challenges and benefits of this new classroom experience? Some of our faculty are happy to explain.

VPYTHON IN PHYSICS When it comes to Physics class, not all the concepts students learn are as concrete as watching a tennis ball drop. Upper School Physics teacher Richard Wright notes, “When we get into the topics of electricity and magnetism, it’s tough for students to visualize what’s going on.” Luckily VPython was created specifically for physics scenarios. “It’s a really powerful tool, it’s a data visualizer/ modeling program that students can use to create visual representations of invisible interactions. They get really excited when they get to use 3D glasses to see their 3D models.”

Mr. Mele’s Latin class takes a Quizlet.

Richard points out that using a modeling software doesn’t mean that students aren’t learning the principles, “Students are still expected to know the basic formulas before they plug any info into the program.” Students use VPython in 8 •  St. Andrew’s Episcopal School •  www.sasaustin.org

groups to collaborate on projects and work through problems, another skill Richard finds critical, “When their model has an error, they have to find where the problem is and re-work it. That’s problem-solving, or ‘debugging.’” Perhaps most importantly, the fun the students have using the program inspires them to push through difficult concepts. Richard remarks, “I’m throwing tough stuff at them and they stick with it!” Alumni who took Richard’s class later told him that “it really gave them a leg-up in college, and made engineering classes feel easy.” But regardless of their academic pursuits, Richard says, “On a larger scale, I’m teaching kids how to deal with failure by re-visiting the problem and trying again. You’re never ‘done’ in science. There’s always room to push further and try something new.” VPython is just one tool Richard uses for his class, but he believes it supports the importance of project-based inquiry learning that “lets students explore topics by building models for concrete scenarios, letting them play around and apply what they’ve learned to the real world.”

QUIZLET IN LATIN Middle School Latin teacher Greg Mele has spent nearly two decades teaching, and he’s seen how easily students get drained from the rigors of repetitive rote exercises. Quizlet is his solution.

TECH 101

SESSION! Quizlet is an online resource where users can search for thousands of interactive quizzes to test their knowledge of various subjects. In addition to quizzes, there are study guides available to download and print; gone are the days of writing out every vocabulary word by hand. “I can ask more of my students intellectually,” says Greg. “Now that students spend less time producing their own study materials, they are expected to spend more time focusing on areas where they struggle, and applying their knowledge to more abstract concepts.” It’s not simply about acing quizzes either. Greg may ask his students to take a quiz as many times as they can in 20 minutes to get the best score. They are learning to self-correct and selfimprove. Greg notes, “This approach isn’t new, West Point has been doing a version of this for 40 years. Students are expected to go home and self-test and master the material because the next day they know they’ll be expected to apply it to something new. There’s very little redundancy.” Efficiency is key for Latin students preparing for the National Etymology Exam, in which they are tested on hundreds of word definitions. With Quizlet, they are able to study 263 terms in 30 minutes. As a parent who has watched his own kids grow weary from redundant tasks, Greg believes, “We need to challenge that old paradigm of ‘rigor.’ We can teach kids to work smart. They’re learning how to manage information efficiently, which is a skill they can use in other classes and beyond.”

LIBRARY WITH MARY WHITAKER It’s never too early to learn how to navigate the world wide web, which is why Librarian and Educational Technology Coordinator Mary Whitaker is dedicated to help Lower School students explore the online world in a safe environment. As Mary says, “Learning how to use a library is an important skill. Libraries will always exist, but the way the space is used will change, the resources too.” While younger students begin learning basic keyboarding skills and desktop navigation, older students are taught how to create presentations, brochures, and perform searches online.

St. Andrew’s issues students in grades 4–6 a dedicated laptop, enabling them to rapidly develop confidence in their tech skills by doing assignments and research on a regular basis. Students say, “It gives us a sense of responsibility,” and “We don’t have to wait until we get home to access a computer,” which means “There’s more time to work since you don’t have to go find a computer.”

Mary notes that these practical skills are complemented by her Mrs. Whitaker’s library students. lessons on information Mary also makes a point to begin literacy, “It’s important for students to teaching her students about online learn what a reliable source is, and safety and appropriate online how you whittle down a large list of behavior. Mary says, “It is important search results. I try to teach them how to encourage students to not say or to identify a credible source, and do anything online they wouldn’t do they’re often surprised when I show in a face-to-face situation. Online them a site that looks credible but game interactions can be a context really isn’t.” for potential bullying, and we want to A favorite project Mary likes to help be sure students aren’t relaxed about with is fourth-grade teacher Donna it because of anonymity.” Hunt’s animal research project. Ultimately, Mary sees her role as Students pick an animal, then find teaching critical thinking skills that a book to research, and Mary students can take into Middle and compiles links to online resources to Upper school, “I want them to be complement the hardcopy books. ready to find credible resources, Mary also helps students learn how to be safe online, and self-reliant in use MS Publisher to create and print their research.” a brochure on their animal, complete with bibliography.

FULL STE(A)M AHEAD: ART AND STEM EDUCATION WEB PORTFOLIOS This year, Art teacher Kate Torres and Tech Coordinator Doug Alford teamed up to create an online art portfolio project for the eighth-grade Art Elective class. When asked why she and Doug chose an online project, Kate explains, “It’s a skill these students will probably develop at some point in their lives, and testing it out in the classroom gives us a chance to discuss aesthetic choices, privacy options, and audiences.” Beyond the practicality of website skills, Kate sees the value in exposing passionate art students to a professional artist’s experience, “We definitely learn new skills and try out specific techniques together, but they bring in a lot of their personal goals and interests. They do what professional artists do. They research

and present findings about artists they find personally inspiring. They articulate personal artistic goals and pursue independent projects.” Some notable student web portfolios Kate describes include, “Eva Strelitz-Block and Stefan Bentzin, who developed

really clean and professional display spaces. Julian Mirran and Dante Nelson shared favorite musicians and set a certain mood as a way to explore and share aspects of their identities. Quinnie Sunshine and Andrew Hojel put in extensive information about some of their favorite artists. James Castro included a link to some work he’s posted on another website, and Grace Evans posted a link to her mother’s art website. Some students posted humorous photos and videos along with their artwork. I loved seeing the choices each student made. And now, like most professional artists, they have art portfolio websites.” Click here to see the growing portfolios of these talented eighth-graders!

Nate Stephenson was honored as a four-year All-State participant—an honor that was held with only five other students out of the 160-voice choir!

The Upper School Jazz Band has enjoyed performing with two guest musicians this year. Dr. John Mills, a music professor at UT, worked with students in a master-class format, and then performed with the ensemble at the Upper School chapel. In February, professional musician Christian Tamburr gave a clinic and joined students in a performance for Rock Band and AP Music Theory students, as well as Susan Kemner Reed’s art students, who were invited to draw.

ServantNEWS CON MI MADRE

RUN FOR THE WATER Guest speakers Gilbert Tuhabonye and Peter Rouch (St. Andrew’s parents and founders of the Gazelle Foundation) spoke to sixth-grade students about the Gazelle Foundation’s “Run For the Water” race in October. Students got to lift jugs filled with water (close to 40 pounds in weight) to learn first-hand what the people of Burundi go through for a glass of water. This presentation, along with ongoing class studies of water scarcity, inspired some students to participate in the “Run for the Water” on Oct. 26th, which raised money for clean water technology in Burundi.

St. Andrew’s hosted a financial literacy and healthy living conference on campus for the Con Mi Madre organization on November 1st. The day included two keynote speakers, 10 breakout sessions/presenters, and almost 200 attendees! Con Mi Madre provides holistic support services to underprivileged Latina mothers and their daughters to help them navigate the path of adolescence on the way to college. This conference was another step towards helping these women realize this worthwhile mission.

EL BUEN SAMARITANO Ninth- and 10th-graders created original videos for their service learning project on St. Andrew’s Day, which they submitted to El Buen Samaritano to help the organization spread awareness about their food pantry. El Buen selected their favorite video to feature on their Facebook page. In addition to raising public awareness, St. Andrew’s students also donated thousands of canned and pre-packaged goods to El Buen on November 18th, to ensure hungry families in Austin had a Thanksgiving meal this year.

CRUBOT The Robotics Team demoed their “CruBot” robot at the Austin Nature & Science Center in January. It was an opportunity for Austin kids to get excited about science and engineering, and our beloved CruBot did not disappoint! Robotics team members Annika Ostrom (’16), Pouya Mohammadi (’17), and Julia Coe (’18) were on hand to help 50 kids in attendance learn how to manipulate the CruBot’s wheels and arms to grasp and move objects. After the event, Cait McCann, Public Programs Coordinator for the Austin Nature & Science Center, told the team, “You stole the show!”

COALITION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT The Coalition for the Environment took their green thinking off campus to help clean-up their community and get some new skills along the way. First, they headed to Route 360 over the winter to help clean-up abandoned Christmas decorations. In the spring, they volunteered with The Green Corn Project to make sustainable gardens to feed the community.

PEREZ SCIENCE FAIR Upper School students Annika Ostrom (’16), Monessha Jayabalan (’15), Vipal Telang (’15), John Sealy (’15), and Graham Patterson (’16) visited Perez Elementary School in January to serve as honorary judges for the school’s science fair. Our Traditions

LESSONS & CAROLS The first half of the academic year culminated in our Christmas celebration on December 17th. Our band and orchestras accompanied Lower, Middle, and Upper School choirs as they led faculty, parents, and students in celebratory song. Scripture readings woven between songs and instrumental pieces took us on the epic Biblical journey from the beginning of time to the birth of Jesus. Messages of love and peace carried us into the holiday break!

OUR DEVELOPMENT TRADITIONS NEWS

DIVERSITY & LEADERSHIP DAY Guest speakers from across the country and around the world visited our Upper School campus on February 12th to discuss their life experiences. Our Upper School students heard live performances and remarks from guests that included a slam poet, a rabbi, a dancer, a restaurateur, a filmmaker, an entrepreneur, and a group of Pakistani musicians. Our own Julie Gester (’16) even took the stage to deliver an electrifying performance of monologues from the Heather Raffo show “Nine Parts of Desire.”

GRANDPARENTS’ & GRANDFRIENDS’ DAY Our cherished tradition, Grandparents’ & Grandfriends’ Day, moved to a new date this year,

but that certainly didn’t keep our dedicated grandparents and friends

at bay! On February 5th, nearly 200 grandparents and grandfriends visited the Upper School campus to spend time with their students. On February 6th, the Lower and Middle School campus was buzzing with more than 400 special grandparents and guests. This day is a special moment in the life of the school.
