Liebe Leser und Freunde des Schneehasen, Da hoppelt er zu uns, der 38. Schneehase! Der Schneehase ist nicht nur das literarische Spiegelbild der Gemeinschat des SAS. Es ist viel mehr. Es ist zunächst, wie mein Vorgänger Martin Hodler in der letzten Ausgabe schrieb, ein Zeitzeugnis einer eindrücklichen, wenn nicht sogar einmaligen geistigen Leistung, die der SAS seit seiner Gründung vollbrachte. Ich denke, es ist aber auch eine einmalige Dokumentation der Entwicklung des Skirennsports allgemein, wie auch eine lückenlose Chronik des Clublebens des SAS. Zum eigentlichen Höhepunkt der Beschreibung der Anfangsrolle des Schneehasen setzt mein Vor-Vorgänger Raoul Imseng in seinem Leitartikel an. Er fragt sich, ob es nicht die drei Tenöre waren – Arnold Lunn, der SAS und der Schneehase – die dem alpinen Skirennsport zur internationalen Anerkennung verhalfen. Er geht weiter und meint, dass der Schneehase dabei die Rolle des stimmgewaltigen Luciano Pavarotti hatte. Ich bin stolz, mit einem motivierten Team den Schneehasen mit einer neuen Struktur und in aufgefrischter Form zu präsentieren. Ich habe diese Aufgabe mit Ehrfurcht angenommen im Respekt vor der faszinierenden Tradition des Schneehasen und verneige mich vor der grossartigen Leistung meiner Vorgänger und deren Teams. Der letzte Hasensprung führt zu folgenden vier Kapiteln der vorliegenden Ausgabe: Kapitel 1: Geschichte und Tradition Kapitel 2: Zukunt und Innovation Kapitel 3: Persönlichkeiten und Werte Kapitel 4: Clubleben und Resultate Im ersten Kapitel «Geschichte und Tradition» wird ein Teil der reichhaltigen Geschichte des Skisports und des SAS der jüngeren Generation näher gebracht. Ein Leitartikel beleuchtet die Rolle und die Entstehungsgeschichte des Schneehasen selbst. Sodann wird die fast tausendjährige Geschichte des Langlaufs beschrieben wie auch die Geschichte des Kandahar Ski Clubs zusammengefasst. Auch wird die seit 85 Jahren sorgfältig geplegte Tradition des ältesten alpinen Mannschatswettkampfes – des Anglo-Swiss – überliefert. Schliesslich dürfen die jüngere Geschichte, die alpinistischen SAS-Expeditionen und der Einzug der Frauen im SAS nicht zu kurz kommen. Letztlich lebt ja unsere Zukunt auch von der Tradition! Im zweiten Kapitel «Zukunt und Innovation» werden ausgewählte hemen unserer Zeit behandelt. Wiederkehrende Schwerpunkte sind die Weiterentwicklung des Ski- und Wintersportes sowie des Alpinismus, Global Warming und die Sportmedizin. So erfahren wir, wie Swiss Ski wieder auf Erfolgskurs zurückgekehrt ist oder wie Extremskifahrer bis heute fast alle Achttausender bezwungen haben. Das hema Global Warming, ot recht kontrovers diskutiert, wollen wir bescheiden anfangen und die Entwicklung der Schneeklimatologie in der Schweiz beleuchten. Weiter haben drei prominente Ärzte zur Feder gegrifen und dem Skisport nahestehende hemen analysiert und sogar mit Empfehlungen komplettiert. Der SAS Vorwort

mit seiner intellektuellen Spannkrat war ja immer sehr kreativ. Eine Institution, die von einem SASler gegründet und von weiteren Mitgliedern seit vielen Jahren massgeblich beeinlusst wurde, ist das TAS – le Tribunal Arbitral du Sport. Schliesslich ist ja unsere sportliche und geistige Zukunt auch von den Innovationen bestimmt. Im dritten Kapitel «Persönlichkeiten und Werte» werden verdiente und prominente Sportpersönlichkeiten wie der erste Zentralpräsident des SAS, der beste Langläufer aller Zeiten und weitere SAS-Ikonen porträtiert wie auch deren Beitrag für unsere Sportgemeinschat dargestellt. Die Werte, deren Bestand und Wandel, kommen ebenfalls nicht zu kurz. So werden Rolle und Werte des Sports allgemein wie auch der famose SAS-Geist auf ihre Tauglichkeit untersucht. Was ist denn sonst neu um den Schneehasen herum? Es sind dies die folgenden drei Neuerungen. Erstens, alle bisherigen 37 Ausgaben sind via die SAS-Website auf dem Internet einsehbar, inklusive einer efektiven Blättern- und Suchfunktion. Zweitens, der Schneehase erscheint neu nahezu dreisprachig, mit einem je 25%-Anteil in Französisch und Englisch. Zudem ist der Lead eines jeden Artikels in die jeweils zwei anderen Sprachen übersetzt. Und drittens, um die langfristige Finanzierung des Schneehasen zu sichern, wurde ein steuerbefreiter Förderverein gegründet. Ich komme zum Dank. Zunächst möchte ich meinem neuen Schneehasen-Team und der Firma Stämpli, besonders Susann Trachsel, Christoph Bigler und Markus Lehmann, für die organisatorisch-publizistische Unterstützungsarbeit während fast dreier Jahre ganz herzlich danken. Natürlich geht mein grosser Dank an die vielen Autoren, die neu auch aus der Romandie, aus Norwegen und aus England kommen, für die spannenden Beiträge und die vielen faszinierenden Bilder. Schliesslich geht mein Dank an die zahlreichen Sponsoren, Gönner und Förderer, die es mit ihren grosszügigen Beiträgen und Spenden erst ermöglicht haben, ein solches Buch zu inanzieren. Chers lecteurs, chers amis du Schneehase, Vous tenez entre vos mains notre 38e numéro – rien de moins ! Ainsi, le Schneehase est bien plus que le relet littéraire de la communauté du SAS. Il est d’abord, comme l’écrivait mon prédécesseur Martin Hodler dans le dernier numéro, une performance impressionnante sinon unique sur le plan intellectuel, depuis la fondation du SAS. De plus, il documente, de manière exceptionnelle selon moi, le développement du ski de compétition, tout en fournissant une chronique exhaustive de la vie de notre club. Un autre de mes vénérables prédécesseurs, Raoul Imseng, a pris la plume dans l’article introductif pour évoquer le rôle du Schneehase à ses débuts. Il se demande si le ski alpin ne doit pas sa reconnaissance internationale à ces trois ténors : Arnold Lunn, le SAS et le Schneehase luimême – airmant que c’est le Schneehase qui a tenu le rôle de ténor principal, tel Luciano Pavarotti. J’ai quant à moi pris la direction de cette « trente-huitième » avec tout le respect dû à une publication de tradition, et non sans m’incliner devant l’exceptionnel travail accompli par ceux qui y ont œuvré avant moi. Aujourd’hui, je suis ier de vous présenter, en collaboration avec une équipe hautement motivée, un Schneehase quelque peu remanié, axé sur les chapitres suivants : Chapitre 1 : Histoire et tradition Chapitre 2 : Avenir et innovation Chapitre 3 : Personnalités et valeurs Chapitre 4 : Vie du club et résultats Dans le premier chapitre, nous présentons à nos jeunes membres tout un pan de la riche histoire du ski alpin et du SAS. Après l’article introductif qui évoque le rôle et la naissance de notre publication, vous en apprendrez plus sur le passé presque millénaire du ski de fond et sur le Kandahar Ski Club. Puis, vous découvrirez la plus ancienne compétition de ski alpin par équipes, à savoir l’Anglo-Swiss dont la tradition est amoureusement entretenue depuis 85 ans. Et enin, nous ne pouvions manquer de retracer pour la jeune génération les expéditions des alpinistes du SAS et l’entrée des femmes dans notre association – car le passé et la tradition sont aussi des sources d’inspiration pour les bâtisseurs de l’avenir. Un avenir qui, avec l’innovation, est au cœur du deuxième chapitre, avec comme grands thèmes : l’essor du ski, des sports d’hiver et de l’alpinisme, le réchaufement climatique et la médecine du sport. Vous apprendrez ainsi comment Swiss-Ski a retrouvé le chemin du succès, et comment les skieurs de l’extrême ont déjà conquis presque tous les 8000 mètres de la planète. Côté réchaufement climatique – un sujet souvent controversé – nous commençons modestement par un article sur le développement de la climatologie de la neige en Suisse. Puis, nous avons ouvert nos colonnes à trois médecins de renom, qui ont analysé pour nous divers sujets en rapport avec le ski alpin et qui nous font part de leurs recommandations. Enin, nous avons tenu à rappeler que le SAS, porté par des intellectuels, a toujours été très créatif. A titre d’exemple, Préface

nous évoquons une institution fondée par l’un de nos membres et inluencée par plusieurs personnalités du SAS depuis de nombreuses années : le Tribunal Arbitral du Sport. En in de compte, ce sont aussi des innovations comme celle-là qui contribuent – et contribueront encore – à la bonne santé du sport sur tous les plans. Dans le troisième chapitre (Personnalités et valeurs), nous dressons le portrait de sportifs émérites et renommés, tel le premier président central du SAS, ainsi que le meilleur fondeur de tous les temps et d’autres icônes auxquels notre organisation est largement redevable. Quant aux valeurs, éternelles ou en mutation, elles n’ont pas été oubliées : ce numéro fait le point sur le rôle et les valeurs du sport en général et sur le fameux « esprit du SAS » en particulier. Et pour le Schneehase lui-même, quoi de neuf ? Eh bien nous avons trois bonnes nouvelles à vous annoncer ! Il s’agit, premièrement, de la mise en ligne, sur le site du SAS, des trente-sept numéros précédents avec une fonction de déilement et de recherche pour faciliter leur consultation ; deuxièmement, d’une édition pratiquement trilingue – à commencer par les chapeaux des articles – avec un quart des contributions en français et un quart en anglais ; et troisièmement, de la création d’une société de promotion non imposable pour assurer notre inancement à long terme. Pour conclure, je ne voudrais pas manquer de remercier tous ceux et toutes celles qui ont contribué à la réussite de ce numéro. Un grand merci tout d’abord à la nouvelle équipe du Schneehase et à la maison Stämpli, notamment à Susann Trachsel, Christoph Bigler et à Markus Lehmann, pour leur soutien organisationnel et journalistique pendant presque trois ans. Un très grand merci également aux nombreux auteurs qui collaborent à cette publication, notamment à ceux de Suisse romande, de Norvège et d’Angleterre, pour leurs passionnants articles et leurs magniiques photos. Dear readers and friends of the Schneehase, Finally, the 38th edition of the Schneehase has hopped across the inish line! he Schneehase is not merely the literary record of the SAS. It is much more. As my predecessor Martin Hodler wrote in the last issue, it is irst and foremost a time capsule for the meaningful, if not unique intellectual work of the SAS since its founding. However, I believe that it is also a unique record of how alpine skiing has generally evolved and an ongoing chronicle of the club life of the SAS. In his lead article, my pre-predecessor Raoul Imseng begins by describing the pinnacle of the early years of the Schneehase. He wonders whether it was not the “three tenors of alpine racing” – Arnold Lunn, the SAS and the Schneehase – that led to the international acceptance of the alpine ski sport. In his opinion, the Schneehase played the role of the powerful singer Luciano Pavarotti. My highly motivated team and I are proud to introduce the Scheehase with a new structure and fresher design. I assumed this task with awe and respect for the Schneehase’s fascinating tradition and warmly congratulate my predecessors and their teams for their fantastic accomplishment. he latest edition of the Schneehase now contains the following four chapters: Chapter 1: History and Tradition Chapter 2: Future and Innovation Chapter 3: Personalities and Values Chapter 4: Club Life and Results he irst chapter entitled “History and Tradition” presents some of the mesmerising history of skiing and the SAS to young people. he lead article sheds light on the role and creation of the Schneehase itself. hen, it tells the nearly one-thousand-year history of cross-country skiing and summarises the story of the Kandahar Ski Club. It also shares the carefully safeguarded 85-year-old tradition of the oldest competitive alpine ski race, the Anglo-Swiss. Finally, it discusses the early history of the club’s expeditions and looks at how women entered the SAS. Ultimately, our future is also determined by our past! he second chapter, “Future and Innovation”, discusses topical subjects from our era. Recurring themes are the continued development of skiing and winter sports as well as alpinism, global warming and sports medicine. We learn how Swiss Ski got back on the road to success and how extreme skiers have now conquered almost all of the existing eight-thousand-metre peaks. We also wanted to make a modest start in addressing the oten controversial topic of global warming and thus highlight the development of snow climatology in Switzerland. hree prominent doctors have put their pens to paper to analyse health topics related to ski sport and have even made recommendations. he SAS with all its intellectual capabilities has always been very creative. One very good example of this creativity is an institution that was co-founded by as SAS member and strongly inluenced by other members over the years – the Court of Arbitration Editorial

for Sport. In the end, innovation is a determining factor in the future of our sport and intellectual development. “Personalities and Values”, the third chapter, portrays prominent persons from the world of sport who displayed special merit, such as the irst Central President of the SAS, the best cross-country skier of all time, as well as other SAS icons whose proiles are presented along with a description of their contribution to our sports community. A look at our values and how they developed completes the picture enabling us to examine the role and values of sport in general as well as the famous SAS spirit. So what else is new in the Schneehase? here are three new features. First, all 37 editions can now be found on the SAS website; reading is made easier by page turning and search functions. Second, the Schneehase is now almost trilingual, with French and English articles each accounting for 25% of the entire content. he lead for each article is also translated into the other two languages. And third, to ensure long-term funding for the Schneehase, a special tax-exempt association has been founded. Now I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this edition of the Schneehase. My sincere thanks go to my new Schneehase team and to the Stämpli company, particularly Susann Trachsel, Christoph Bigler and Markus Lehmann, for their organisational and technical support over the last three years. Of course, I would like to thank all the authors most sincerely, including contributors from French-speaking Switzerland, Norway and England, for their exciting articles and fascinating pictures.
