The Lloydminster Steelers looked to defend their peewee football championship on Sunday, but fell short in a 26-14 loss to Bonnyville at St. Mary’s field.

After backing up the Barons onto their goal line, a quick hitch pass to the wideout in the end zone would not be returned out, as the Raiders recorded the safety, earning what would be the two championship points. “Both defences did outstanding today,” said Telidetzki. “They made what the game was today. Defence just kept the points to nothing.” For Lloydminster Comprehensive, it was a heartbreaking end to their WFL season. While the field goal would have only sent the game into overtime and not awarded the Barons the championship, it perfectly summed up how the Barons’ night went on the field. “It seemed like we were an inch away the whole day,” said Harper. “A bounce here, a bounce there, we recover an on-side kick, it’s a possession, we get the fake punt, it is another possession. It was a big game and we needed a couple of extra yards and we were just not able to come up with it. “It wasn’t a lack of effort. I don’t think it wasn’t a preparation thing, just, they made the play and we didn’t.” The Raiders last won a Wheatland Football League champion back in 2011 after a 29-23 victory over the Cold Lake Royals. In 2012, they were defeated by the St. Paul Lions in the semifinals and last year lost to the Lions in the final. For Grade 12 quarterback Telidetzki, it was his final shot at a WFL championship after suffering defeat the last two seasons. And the feeling of being a champion is more than what he expected. “A little more than what I expected,” said Telidetzki. “I can’t even believe it right now, it’s awesome.”
