It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And we have everything you need right here in the Saratoga Christmas magazine…

From what time Santa and Mrs. Claus will be arriving, to the schedule for First Night Saratoga! It’s all right here, in one easy to carry, slim little magazine that’s packed with information to enjoy the Holidays in Saratoga Springs! We’ve even included a Holiday Songbook to carry with you while going caroling in your neighborhood! (One of my favorite traditions that we still do each year, while handing out the Christmas treats that my daughter and I - and 10 or so of our closest friends!! - make each year.) Our little “City in the Country” truly shines this time of year and we hope this magazine helps you plan your holiday outings and create your own traditions. …and if one of those traditions is strolling through downtown Saratoga checking out all the beautiful window displays, you’ll love the story on page 35! This publication started years ago, as a “program” for the Saratoga Festival of Trees, the annual fundraiser held by Catholic Charities, but soon became a part of our yearly line up and we love working with them and putting out this magazine. As you may know… Saratoga TODAY loves being able to help area organizations promote their events! Saratoga Festival of Trees

he holiday season can be challenging for individuals and families living in the tri-county region. Many find it difficult to get and keep jobs that pay enough to meet their basic needs. They are having trouble putting nutritious food on their tables, locating affordable and stable housing and securing adequate health care for themselves and their families. The parallel challenge for each of us is to respond to the needs of the poor and vulnerable among us with compassion and generosity, and to advocate for systemic change that guarantees the basic necessities for all of our neighbors. In the midst of these challenging times, we are aware of our own vulnerability as well as a heightened sensitivity to our deep interconnectedness. It is then with a spirit of increased consciousness of the blessings in our lives, that we invite you to enjoy this creative holiday fantasy of delightfully decorated trees, wreaths, and centerpieces. Please stop at our raffle table, shop at the Holiday Store and join us for Breakfast with Santa on Saturday – a fun filled day of children’s activities in Santa’s Workshop. Returning again this year is the exquisite miniature Circus, Carnival and Train exhibit built over a 40 year period and presented by its owner, Don Erlenbusch. May the many magical moments of this year’s festival begin the Christmas season with much joy and anticipation of the many celebrations to follow. Behind the scenes, scores of dedicated volunteers spent countless hours planning and preparing for this event to be enjoyed by the entire community. For them we are most grateful. Catholic Charities SARATOGA, WARREN & OF

WASHINGTON COUNTIES

The Saratoga Festival of Trees is the largest fundraiser supporting the programs and services offered by Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties. Engaging the energies of the tri- county communities, Catholic Charities has become a vital part of life for many individuals and families in the region. During 2017, over 5000 individuals were served by the agency. These services were provided by 47 staff. In addition, nearly 300 volunteers gave 27,000 hours of their time.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES OFFERED BY CATHOLIC CHARITIES: COUNSELING – Individual, couple and family counseling.

MENTORING PROGRAM – Prevention / diversion

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROJECT – Shelter, counseling,

This program provided mental health services to 1,162 individuals including 222 children, 858 adults, and 82 older adults.

It’s close to Christmas

so don’t be surprised when you see people frozen outside on Broadway in front of G. Willikers Toys. It’s not because they are cold – it’s because they are captivated! The surprise of seeing G. Willikers’ extraordinary window displays causes people young and old to freeze in their tracks. Then curiosity kicks in, followed by pleasant feelings of joy. People stop shop owner Linda Ambrosino months ahead of time to ask what this year’s holiday display will be. She just smiles and tells them they’ll have to wait and see. “It’s just the surprise – that delicious thrill of wanting to know but not wanting to know – that adds to the excitement of it,” she said.

Displays that Make People Sing

After 27 years of doing window displays, they are constantly looking for ideas and searching for supplies. “We live and breathe Christmas windows all year long,” she said.

The first window design meeting of the year happens during the summertime. This is when Linda, her husband Larry Ambrosino (who builds the displays), shop manager

At first they kept to a certain color

Many of the traditions we now consider vital components of our modern-day Christmas holiday, including Christmas trees, Santa Claus and the ritual of browsing delightful holiday window displays, weren’t popular until the mid-to-late 1800s. Once the Industrial Age was in full swing, large plate glass windows became a common sight on storefronts but they were used primarily to display merchandise. It wasn’t until competition for shopper’s attention intensified that retailers began creating purely decorative displays. These festive holiday windows were able to do many things simultaneously - generate interest, trigger an emotional impact and bring new customers into the establishment. Aren’t we lucky that we live in a town with retailers that want to entertain and delight us. So, instead of rushing by, staring at your phone and worrying about how you’re going to get everything done in time, savor the creativity on display.

Last year, the windows were a contest encouraging people to guess which popular holiday songs they were depicting. Linda would often hear the sounds of customers singing, “I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” or “Silver Bells” as they entered the shop.

“I’m a spoke in this wheel of the downtown. It’s for the people, they want it to be here and we want it to be here. It’s a reminder of a kinder, gentler world that is a little more welcoming,” she said.

Now, the Ambrosinos own three G. Willikers toy stores and this year’s windows were done during Veteran’s Day weekend. An email release notifies loyal patrons when they’re ready for viewing.

“It was always done that weekend. I never wanted to push Christmas on anyone, but that’s when everyone was available to do it this year,” said Linda. To make the displays interesting from all angles, they use anything they can find, including boxes, tables, bricks and glass blocks. Displays aren’t for sale. They’re stored in the two large basements underneath the shop and reused in different ways. Heavy doors and limited mobility in the windows necessitate props that can be assembled in pieces. Once they are done, it’s impossible to navigate in the small space. The year that one of the motors burnt out in a mechanical snowmen and tree scene, it was a nerve-wracking journey for Larry as he delicately crawled through to fix it.

Christmas Card to the Community Very little merchandise is actually for sale in the beautiful G. Willikers holiday windows. It harkens back to the days when people would window shop downtown. “No matter who you were, whether you had money and lived in the big houses or you were like me and didn’t have as much, we could all enjoy that part of the season,” said Linda.

Photo by Deborah Neary Linda grew up playing board games like Monopoly and Clue. “I wanted a cowboy outfit, not a cowgirl outfit, but I wasn’t allowed to have one. All the cowgirls did was sit at home and wait for the cowboys to come back. Cowboys got to go ride out on the horses and have adventures. I wanted to have adventures,” she said. Play and imagination are the magic of childhood. She wants kids to come into her shop just to play. “We can’t forget how important it is for children to play,” said Linda. That’s what she hopes her store - filled with handselected, long-lasting, quality toys that she calls the classics of the future - and that her window displays, will inspire. “It’s our holiday card to our customers. It fosters children’s joy in the holiday and it is for the child in every adult.”

The theme for First Night Saratoga 2019 is “Let’s Celebrate!”, and we have events planned that will appeal to everyone’s eclectic tastes be it comedy and contra-dancing or magic and music. Beginning with the 5k road-race at Skidmore College at 5:30pm and culminating with the fireworks in Congress Park at midnight, First Night Saratoga is sure to be a highlight of your outgoing year. We have done our best to group complementary artists together, and so it will be possible to choose one or two venues that will provide ample entertainment throughout the night. If you find yourself with a good seat early on, be assured that you may keep your place as long as you like. We have included some highlights below, but we encourage you to review the schedule with friends and family and choose your own exciting New Year’s Eve adventure! On the mainstage in the City Center, regional rising star, Sydney Worthley will get you dancing at the top of the night with her soulful voice and upbeat original numbers. Next up, the popular Professor Louie & the Crowmatix will take the stage with the Woodstock Horns to present the lost tracks of The Band. Back by popular demand, Sawyer Fredericks, will close out the last two hours of 2018 with his own brand of American roots straight from his new album. Fredericks will also lead a countdown into the New Year, as will all closing artists in the City Center (Georgie Wonder’s Orchestra, Sirsy, Bovine Social Club) and the Courtyard Marriott (The Lied To’s, Mike Campese). This provides a great alternative to fireworks for those who would rather stay in place and warmly ring in 2019 with their favorite artists! For our youngest revelers, the Children’s Museum at Saratoga will open their doors at 4pm and invite families in to discover how different countries around the world put their own spin on New Year’s traditions. This will be followed by a parade to the Lake Avenue School where kids can eat cotton candy, get their faces painted and enjoy a one-man circus extravaganza featuring Troy

Wunderle- the Artistic director of Circus Smirkus’ Big Top tour. Just down the hall, the award-winning theater troupe, Arm-of-the-Sea, will weave an epic story with beautiful puppets ranging from 12 inches to 12 feet tall! A lot is going on at Lake Ave School, including a must-see Tribute event with Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash sharing the auditorium stage. For other great hits from the same era, don’t miss Big Fez & the Surfmatics and Flame, performing at the NBT Bank. If you need some good humor this New Year’s Eve, make sure to check out the Empire State College Rotunda where Comedy Works will present an array of the best regional stand-ups. Meanwhile, the Saratoga Arts stage will feature a hilarious original cabaret by FAB the Duo up from NYC for this event. FAB shares the spotlight with Will Shakespeare who casts and directs classic adventures full of merriment, sword fights, mistaken identities, star-cross’ d lovers, shipwrecks, musical numbers… and bear chases all in under 40 minutes! And, of course, perennial favorite, Michael Ray, will entrance audiences at the Salvation Army with his unbelievable hypnotic powers. This New Year’s it is time to get moving! Kevin Richards will lead full floor country line-dancing in the St. Peter’s Parish Center, and later the Saratoga Chamber Players and Tango Fusion will join forces to provide dance instruction for all levels with a flare. In the City Center, the Grafton Street Trio will play traditional uilleann pipe tunes to the high kicks of the Mise Eire Irish Dancers and the Georgie Wonders Orchestra will close out the evening with old-time romantic big band hits worth every dip and twirl. A full range of musical genres is represented! If you are in the mood for Jazz, make sure to stop by the Hampton Inn (Roben Kosek Jazz & Blues, Déjà vu Jazz) or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Hetko Siegel Syracuse, The New Edge, Michael Benedict). If you want roots music, you will find what you seek in the Saratoga Springs Post Office (Mark Tolstrup, Jimy Graham). Temple Sinai is the go-to venue for the hottest new alternative groups in the 518 (Ryan Leddick Trio, Sydney Schizzano, The Onlys), the acoustically fabulous Military Museum will hold our a cappella groups (The Racing City and Saratoga Soundtrack Choruses). Finally, don’t miss the world-renowned Indian Classical musician, Maestro Ustad Shafaat Khan, who will play one set of traditional music and one set of modern fusion in the City Center.
