SARATOGA SPRINGS — Anthony Scirocco, Jr. says he has decided to take the “humbling, emotional and inspirational” step to follow in his late father’s footsteps and carry on the traditions and legacy that his father worked to build in the city. His father, Anthony “Skip” Scirocco died in April, early in his two-year term as Commissioner of Public Works.

Scirocco Jr., who has received the support of the local Republican Committee, officially announced his candidacy this week for the November election that will fill the DPW seat for the calendar year 2023 – the remainder of the term. Jason Golub, recently appointed to the vacant seat for the balance of 2022 by the City Council, has received the backing of the local Democratic Committee, and will also run in the November election. HISTORY

SARATOGA Hard Work for Nanotech OF

by Steven Williams | Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable Contact: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com

Joe Bruno never fell from favor with many Capital Region residents, and the vast sums of state money he brought to the region were mostly good investments. But by the time President Obama visited the semiconductor research center at the University at Albany on May 8, 2012, he had long been driven from power. President Barack Obama’s nanotechnology visit to Albany was announced the same day that former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno was in a federal courtroom in Albany, reindicted on corruption charges, but as well-tailored as ever. Here’s the irony: Bruno, despite his arrogance, had a passion for using his power to beneficially reshape the Capital Region economy – and GlobalFoundries wouldn’t be in Saratoga County without him. When he deposed fellow Republican and then-majority leader Ralph Marino in 1994, Bruno said Marino had become too smug in his power, too quick to steer state taxpayer money to things like high school swimming pools in his Long Island district. But Bruno was soon doing the same thing, dropping hundreds of millions of dollars collected from residents of Endicott and Batavia and Huntington Station on projects in Troy and Albany and Saratoga. A minor league baseball stadium may bear his name, but here’s betting the Luther Forest Technology Campus will cast a longer shadow. Bruno sank $100 million of state money into developing the enormous industrial park in Malta and Stillwater, the kind of money it takes to turn the middle of nowhere into somewhere. Like Bruno, many if not most of the people who did the heavy lifting that led to the region landing GlobalFoundries have exited public life, voluntarily or not. Luther Forest was really the second choice for where to build a Capital Region chip plant, after the North Greenbush Town Board rejected Bruno’s dream of a semiconductor manufacturer located there, among the fields overlooking the Albany skyline.

Week of June 24 – June 30, 2022 The Rensselaer County town simply said no. In Malta it took some convincing. At the time, people were treating the 1,400 acres of pine plantation as their private woods, so turning it into an enormous industrial park was divisive, believe it or not. Public hearings on the tech park could be as tense as an air traffic control room. The Town Board held dozens of meetings on trails, traffic and environmental safeguards, meetings that lasted until past an owl’s bedtime. David Meager, who was Malta town supervisor at the time, said some of the recent glowing national reports about GlobalFoundries transforming the upstate economy “didn’t really give any indication of the hard work and heavy lifting that went in early on.” Meager said more credit should go to Ken Green and Jack Kelley, the top leadership at the Saratoga Economic Development Corp. when the technology campus was first proposed, in secretive discussions between 1998 and 2002. Neither is with SEDC any longer. Green brilliantly and tactfully coaxed the complex project through town zoning approvals in Malta and Stillwater until final approval in 2004, and he was at the edge of the stage when Gov. George Pataki announced a tentative deal for a chip plant in 2006, the deal that coaxed what was then AMD with an unprecedented $1.4 billion in state cash and future tax breaks. (Bruno, of course, was instrumental in that package, too.) But Green would pick up two too many DWIs, spend a few months in jail, and move to Florida. Kelley left SEDC for a private real estate job. Since his resignation in 2008 and first indictment in 2009, Bruno’s name has also disappeared from the credit lines. (Bruno’s two 2009 convictions were overturned by an appeals court last November, but he now faces charges all over again in a fresh federal indictment.) Nevertheless, the $100 million in state money that went into developing the technology campus was almost all Bruno’s doing. “There were endless studies that had to be done up front. The site had to be analyzed, and Joe made sure the money was there,” Meager said. Then there’s water. Chip plants need lots of it, and Luther Forest was a dozen miles from the nearest river. argue that their financing of the county water system in 2008 was a courageous step, integral to attracting a chip plant. They took the step before there was a final deal for the plant, basically diving based on a promise the pool would be filled. Without the chip plant, the water system wasn’t going to support itself, even with the $30 million Bruno promised it. Bruno and Pataki were both out of office by the time the county needed that money, and the state bureaucracy repeatedly put the county through some high hoops, even as contractors were demanding to be paid. Meanwhile, off-stage events provided fuel for the skeptics. The semiconductor industry went through a downturn, AMD hemorrhaged red ink, and the company wasn’t making any promises to anyone. It finally sold its manufacturing plants to the government of oil-rich Abu Dhabi in 2008. Abu Dhabi also snapped up an established semiconductor company in Singapore, and merged the companies to form GlobalFoundries. “I’m just hopeful people will remember there was a lot of hard work,” said Meager, who retired in 2005 after 34 years as town supervisor. “I’d be a wealthy man if I had a nickel for every time someone said, ‘They’re not going to come.’” Steven Williams is a retired Schenectady Daily Gazette journalist. He spent most of his career covering Saratoga County communities and regional issues. Steve authored the Off the Northway column on Saratoga County which has been complied into a book to be released by the Saratoga County History Center on June 28 7 PM at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa with a presentation and book signing. Congratulations to Beverly Lazar Davis, founder of Youth2: Youth Helping Youth and her young members who hosted the Walk for Ukraine fundraiser. What a remarkable example of living the mission of Youth2—to provide opportunities to our youth to improve the lives of people in our community and around the world. As I walked about their recent event in Congress Park, it was clear that the young people were engaged in service beyond themselves—a founding principle of the organization. Beverly calls this action ‘transforming gracefully’ during the formative years.

Since her launch of Youth2 in 2003, she has guided many young people through this transformation, providing countless opportunities to think about, discuss and create community service projects that turn simple and complex ideas into action. Each activity, in turn, translates to belief in one’s own ability to effect positive change. The Walk for Ukraine is one of the best examples of this. Without a doubt, it was an expression of kindness as well as a demonstration of the power of service to others. Bravo to everyone who made this happen! - Darrice E. Kelley

DPW Installing Clement Avenue Storm Drainage Infrastructure SARATOGA SPRINGS — Installation of new storm water infrastructure is underway on Clement Avenue near the city’s North Side playground, Department of Public Works Commissioner Jason Golub announced on June 16. The storm water project will solve historic flooding issues that occur during major rain events and the springtime snowmelt, and is anticipated to take two to three weeks. “Flooding issues combined with a high traffic volume located next to a playground is a recipe for disaster,” said Golub, in a statement. “The installation of storm water infrastructure will reduce

flooding and increase safety. I’m also proud to report that the DPW work force is installing the infrastructure in-house, saving taxpayer dollars and showcasing their capabilities.” The improvements will be constructed using DPW labor. Funding for the project comes from the city’s capital budget in a dedicated line for storm water improvements. Typical engineering cost estimates for similar projects have averaged hundreds of thousands of dollars, Golub said, by performing the work inhouse. The department estimates at completion the project will cost approximately $30,000.

Saratoga Marks Juneteenth with Event at Frederick Allen Elks Lodge by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Songs, speeches, proclamations and poems of freedom were read, sung and recited to a packed house inside Frederick Allen Elks Lodge on Beekman Street Monday. The “Juneteenth Celebrate Freedom” event, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking the anniversary of June 19, 1865. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. “It’s great to be here, but would have made it even greater is if we never had to have this holiday – slavery, the Civil War and the continuing fight over just plain justice for everyone,” Saratoga Springs city Mayor Ron Kim told those assembled for the event. “Being here is part of that fight.” Former city mayors Ken Klotz and Joanne Yepsen, current council member Minita Sanghvi, and current Congressman Paul Tonko were among those who attended Monday’s event. Among those at the mic: Ethan Crowley performed his rendition of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” actor/director and educator Eunice Ferreira – read adapted speeches of Ida B. Wells.

The Lodge was chartered in August 1925 and the woman’s auxiliary one month later, according to city historian Mary Ann Fitzgerald. Meetings were initially held in members’ homes, then for several decades on Congress Street, when a physical venue was sited. During the mid-20th century, the Urban Renewal movement demolished much of the Congress Street area where a black community of homes and businesses stood. The physical location of

the Lodge changed as well - relocating to Beekman Street after the Congress Street venue was destroyed in a fire in 1966. Kendall Hicks, leader of the Frederick Allen Lodge, welcomed the entire group to the front and closed out the day’s ceremony with a rousing chorus of “This Little Light of Mine (I’m gonna let it shine),” which came to be known as an anthem of the civil rights movement during the 1950’s and 60’s.

SCIROCCO’S PLAN continued from front page... Scirocco, who is 53, has more than 20 years’ experience in the DPW at Saratoga County, starting as a laborer and working his way up to county maintenance supervisor. This will be his first venture into politics. “I don’t know that I harbored any aspirations of running for office. My father did. I thought he would do it for a little bit longer, but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way,” Scirocco says. His father - who held elected posts as Saratoga County Supervisor from 1998 to 2005, and Saratoga Springs DPW Commissioner from 2008 to 2022 – was the one who convinced him to run for office. “My mother came over to my house one day and said, ‘Your father wants to talk with you, can you go up and see him at the hospital?’ So I went and we talked. He said to me: ‘I’d like you to take my spot at the DPW. I think you can do it. I think you’re the guy.’ “Well, this was all new to me. I said: Geez, I don’t really know. It’s a big step. He said, ‘Ah, you can do it. You have a DPW background.’ I was kind of taken aback at it. That he thought that about me. That I could do it. If anyone knows Skip, his passion and his love for the city is unquestioned. For him to feel that highly of me…What really got me is when he said: ‘You know the stars are aligning for you.’ “Here he is, in the hospital, and this is what he’s thinking. I was kind of overwhelmed by it. Every time I went back to see him, that’s all he wanted to talk about.”

The younger Scirocco spent time thinking the process through. “I’ve seen the commitment it takes, the amount of time it entails, some of the abuse you have to take when you run. I’ve seen it all with my father in the 20-something years of him running. I talked to my mother, I talked to my family. My father always had a sense of purpose, of giving back and doing, of making a difference. So, I came to the commitment that I would run.” In the city’s commission form of governing, each of the five councilmembers – four commissioners and a mayor – oversee their own specific departments, as well as count for one vote each in the majority rule of deciding city matters. The term pays an annual salary of $14,500. Scirocco says he plans to maintain his current job. If victorious in securing the oneyear term, he said he would consider running again during the normal election cycle for the two-year term in November 2023. Among his goals for the city, Scirocco says he would plan to maintain his father’s plan. It is what he calls “the four core principles of Skip’s administration” - open space, historic preservation, infrastructure improvements and service. He also has ideas to implement some of his own, such as creating a fiveyear blacktop plan for city roads that would grade the condition of city roads and highlight which ones would be tended to, and in what order. Such a plan would aid everyone from developers to utility companies, he says, by providing knowledge about which areas

would be given attention and when, going forward. “That’s something that’s not there and would be good to have in the future,” he says. “I’d also like to convince the City Council to re-invest some of the VLT aid money and some of the racecourse admission funds it receives to be set aside for use to blacktop.” He’s also in favor of adding an additional city attorney. “It will be a clean, fact-filled campaign. Jason (Golub) is a smart guy, and at the end of the day we’re both Saratogians and want what’s best for Saratoga,” he says, stressing city needs above politics. “The Republicans backed me and that’s great, but if I win, I’m not just going to just plow

Republican streets. We’re going to fix everyone’s pipes, everybody is going to have clean water,” he says. “One of the things I learned from my father was his ability to get along with everyone, and to be able to work with everybody.” Look for a profile of Jason Golub in an upcoming edition of Saratoga TODAY.

Millions Allocated for City Capital Projects by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors gathered for their full monthly meeting June 21, at the county complex in Ballston Spa. Among the measures approved by the Board: •An agreement with Motorola Solutions, Inc. for upgrades to the county’s 800mhz emergency radio system infrastructure. The Board cited “the need to strengthen our system’s infrastructure from cyber intrusion.” The one-year agreement begins July 1 and authorizes a cost of up to $1.5 million. •The Board targeted $3.34 million in ARPA funds for additional roadway and bridge rehabilitation projects in the town of Milton and town of Wilton. The specific bridge rehabilitation projects are located on County Route 49 over the Kayaderosseras Creek in Milton, and rehabilitation of 1.84 miles of County Route 33 in Wilton. In March 2021, the Federal Government passed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (“ARPA”), making those funds eligible to be utilized for general government services including highway and bridge infrastructure repair and rehabilitation. •The Board approved the creation of an assistant county attorney position at a base salary of $94,188 to aid in County Public Health Services’ transition to a full-service health department. The salary and fringe costs associated with the position are anticipated to be partially reimbursable through funding and grants administered by the New York State Department of Health and/ or Health Research, Inc. •A Bond resolution was approved authorizing the issuance of $6.974 million bonds to finance the cost of various Capital Projects, and related SEQR act determination. Among the items is the purchase of a Police Department Emergeny Response Vehicle - identified as a Bearcat - for Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department use. The cost is estimated as up

to $300,000, and is anticipated to have a five year period of usefulness. A variety of other county-use equipment purchases are anticipated, including a dump truck, water truck, bucket truck and other similar machinery and apparatus. The projects related to the resolution include: The reconstruction, improvement and renovation of County administrative office buildings ($1.98 million); the County Correctional Facility building ($1.1 million); the County Social Services building ($310,000), and the County Municipal Complex Building 4 ($550,000). The Board of Supervisors approved two public hearings to take place next month. They are: •A Public Hearing will held at 4:35 p.m. on July 13, regarding upgrades to the Saratoga County Sewer District No. 1’s Wastewater Treatment Plant to properly treat ammonia and meet new limits proposed by an administrative order on consent imposed by DEC. •A Public Hearing to be held at 4:40 p.m. on July 13 on the proposed lease of real property to Prime Group Holdings, LLC for the construction, maintenance, and use of an airplane hangar on county owned airport land. Prime Group Holdings, LLC has proposed the construction of a 15,600 square foot hangar for the storage of aircraft, a paved automobile parking area, and relocation of approximately 650 linear feet of existing airport perimeter roadway. The company has proposed to lease the property on county airport land to be located on approximately 0.73 acres of currently undeveloped land at the south end of the existing FBO apron at the Saratoga County airport, for an initial term of 20 years, subject to mutual renewal. Prime Group Holdings will privately fund the project - including permitting, design, and construction at an estimated cost of $2.5 million, and once constructed, will maintain ownership of the hangar, including maintenance, and pay any applicable taxes. The public hearings will take place in the Meeting Room of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors in Ballston Spa.

Surrounded by state and local authorities, Zurlo issued a statement saying, “there is absolutely no reason for anyone to operate a motorized vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs. My marine patrol, along with our law enforcement partners, will be out in full force this summer to ensure those who decide to operate recklessly or under the influence are held accountable, and most importantly, the safety of all who enjoy the lake is protected.”

Karen Heggen, Saratoga County’s District Attorney, reiterated Zurlo’s concerns in her statement. “I join today with Sheriff Zurlo in shining a light on the importance of boater awareness and safety in the upcoming months. Enjoying the many waterways in Saratoga County is a wonderful pastime. When you choose to pilot a watercraft, it is vital to everyone’s safety that you do not operate under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

THE PATH FORWARD

by David Rath, CMT, CFA for Saratoga TODAY

In times like these, it is hard to see any way out of the endless stream of bad news and the stock market’s downward spiral. Is this part of the normal ebb and flow of economies and markets, or has there been a fundamental change that will usher in a new era? It is impossible to know the answer to that question in real-time, but today’s exercise will focus on getting back to some semblance of normalcy in the financial world.

What does that look like, and how do we get there? Most things in finance can be simplified into a simple supply versus demand equation. Without having to take an Economics 101 course, changing one or both sides of the equation will affect the price of the good or service in question. Think about the exorbitant prices people are willing to pay for popular sporting events or the hottest Christmas toy – a classic case of demand overwhelming the available supply. On the flip side, the discount bin at a department store represents oversupply related to current demand. Our present inflation predicament is a result of abnormalities in both supply and demand. Oil, especially in its refined gasoline state, is the most visible sign of our inflationary environment. Not only do we feel the pain when filling our tanks, but gas station signs are a daily reminder of how bad things have gotten. The hydrofracking process allows this country to bring more supply to the market rather than being

dependent on foreign supply, at least in theory. The current push for renewable energy has left oil companies at odds with the current administration, affecting how much supply can be brought online. Oil companies are also showing a greater desire to return their windfall profits to their shareholders rather than spending more money to find more wells to drill. As we are currently learning, increasing the supply is not a matter of flipping a switch. The situation is compounded by the Russian sanctions to take their massive supply off the market with seemingly no end in sight. Industrial necessities and consumer behavior drive demand for fossil fuels. After two years of being stuck at home, people are itching to get out and travel (and willing to pay up for the gas that supplies their vehicles). The path forward in energy will likely be a combination of increased supply in some form and a change in consumer behavior. COVID policies caused a seismic shift in our consumption habits. In normal times, our take-home pay would be spent on a combination of goods and services. When the ability to participate in experiences like going to a restaurant was eliminated or reduced, we spent more money on things. We redid our houses or bought new ones. We bought some more toys to keep us occupied. Oh, and we were given

some free money to do with as we pleased. This severely disrupted supply chains, which caused limited supply trying to meet massively increased demand. As we normalize, the shift back to services should cause current inventories to be marked down, which will hopefully slow that section of inflation. At the center of all this is the Federal Reserve. If they were driving a car that was the economy, they zoned out while listening to their favorite song and just now realized they were going double the speed limit. As a result, they are hitting the brakes much harder than they would generally prefer. Slamming the brakes signals to the stock market that the era of easy money is over and that corporate earnings will be harder to come by. As a result, investors

are selling their investments to adjust to this new reality. So how do we get out of this mess? It starts with inflation beginning to normalize through some of the channels mentioned above. We are a long way away from the Fed’s target of 2% inflation per year, but signs that we are slowing the advance will give them the flexibility to at least relieve the pressure applied to the brakes. Until that happens, the ride will continue to be bumpy. David Rath, CMT, CFA, is the Chief Investment Officer at Continuum Wealth Advisors in Saratoga Springs. SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs High School Graphic Design and Printing Club recently completed a sensory path project. The project, which began in 2018, was installed at Lake Avenue Elementary School earlier this June. Many students benefit from movement breaks during the day to stay focused and engaged in the classroom. The sensory path offers students a purposeful way to take a break with the benefits of movement, self-regulation, and

coordination. The path is made up of colorful floor decals for students to hop, balance, and walk along. It also has academic components including following directions, counting, and matching. The students in the Graphic Design and Printing Club designed and printed each decal that is part of the path. The path has five themed-sections, about 80 decals, as well as a dedication to Mr. Jim Flanders, the club advisor in 2018 when the project began. The students include Ciara Byrne, Kathleen Dumar, Anna Farrell, Celia Nolan, Madeline Noonan, Audrey Park, Alex Roginski, Nicola Thomas, and Ava Zinter. A second path will soon be installed in the kindergarten wing of Lake Avenue Elementary School. The club hopes to expand on this work and create sensory paths for other elementary schools in the district in the future. For more information visit www.saratogaschools.org.

It takes place each Wednesday, 3-6 p.m. at the farmers’ market, and gives both children and their parents a chance to learn about local foods and farming in a hands-on way. POP Club is open to children of all ages and abilities. Each time participants visit the Wednesday market, they will receive a $2 POP coin that kids can use to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from a farmer of their choice. The coins are geared toward children between the ages of 5 and 12. In addition, children will receive a stamp on a POP passport. After receiving four stamps, children will be eligible for a prize. The project aims to help children see how food and farming are intrinsically connected to strengthening community ties. By buying produce from our vendors, children form what might turn into lifelong relationships with local farmers. At the same time, children gain basic money skills and participate in weekly activities that offer a sense of how to enjoy local produce when it is at its finest. “Success is best

Chicken Parmigiana

when it is shared” -HOWARD SCHULTZ

Hello my Foodie Friends ! This month, Compliments to the Chef is celebrating 20 years of business. On June 24, 2002, our unique kitchen store that was located at 488 Broadway, opened its doors to the Saratoga Springs community beginning the legacy of a true Saratoga downtown business with the support of our Saratoga Springs family.

by John Reardon for Saratoga TODAY

INGREDIENTS • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded thin • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 cups all-purpose flour, seasoned with salt and pepper • 4 large eggs, beaten with 2 tablespoons water and seasoned with salt and pepper

Many dream of owning a business. However, taking the big step as an entrepreneur can be an exhilarating and scary experience. From the moment my family moved to Saratoga Springs many years ago, we dreamt of owning a business in our historical city. Recently I read a fantastic quote that reminded me of the reasons I am an entrepreneur; “It’s not the blowing of the wind that determines your destination. It is the set of the sail”. We become entrepreneurs for many reasons. For me, my decision began when I was a small child and remained through my days within the restaurant corporate environment. I worked for many “bosses” over the years and some were great and some were not. I always yearned to be my own boss. Why not bet on myself? I recognize that to be an entrepreneur included serving an incredible community with services and products that make customers happy.

TOMATO SAUCE: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 large Spanish onion, finely chopped • 4 cloves garlic, smashed with some kosher salt to make a paste

• 2 cups panko bread crumbs

• Two 28-ounce cans plum tomatoes and their juices, pureed in a blender

• 1 cup vegetable oil or pure olive oil

• One 16-ounce can crushed tomatoes

• 1 pound fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced

• 1 small can tomato paste

• 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan

• 1 small bunch Italian parsley

• Fresh basil or parsley leaves, for garnish

• 1 bay leaf • 1 chile pepper, chopped • Salt and freshly ground pepper

INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

As entrepreneurs, we are given the adventure to “keep sailing across open waters and look for your next destination — you never know what treasures you’re bound to discover.” Paula and I are always looking for new ideas, and ways to get culinary tools into the hands of our professional and amateur chefs.

• Season chicken on both sides with salt and pepper.

We thank our Foodie Friends for the support and fellowship of our business. A million thanks to our amazing customers for the support. We are blessed to be serving such a wonderful community. Over the years we have truly enjoyed the foodie stories and loyalty of so many regular customers who come into our store. Thank you for your loyalty to our products and services.

• Divide the oil between 2 large saute’ pans and heat over high heat until almost smoking. Add 2 chicken breasts to each pan and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side.

We at Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place, express much gratitude to the many individuals – family, friends, customers, and business partners who have participated in our journey over the past 20 years. We look forward to the continued years ahead. Remember my Foodie Friends; “Life Happens in the Kitchen!” Also, Bobby Flay you’re invited to stop in anytime!

Take Care, John & Paula

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College presents “Where Words Falter: Art and Empathy,” an exhibition of work from the Tang collection that encourages visitors to strengthen their empathic muscles. The exhibition opens Saturday, July 9—the Tang’s annual community day— and runs through Dec. 18. One wall of the exhibition features a salon-style presentation of about 50 portraits created in the 20th-21st centuries. The people are of different ages, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds, expressing a wide range of human emotion, and all of them looking at the viewer. The wall includes works by artists such as Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, James Barnor, Wendy Ewald, Donna Ferrato, Eve Fowler, Nan Goldin, Andrea Modica, August Sander, and Isaac Scott, as well as found family photographs. Other artists with work in the exhibition include Laura Aguilar, Nayland Blake, Josh Faught, Martin Kersels, Tracey Moffatt, and John Sonsini. Visitors are invited to

participate in the production of a community zine by making their own creative responses to the exhibition. Space will be set aside in the exhibition with materials such as colored pencils, magazines, scissors, and glue. Prompts will guide participants through the art-making process, providing a creative outlet to articulate feelings, thoughts, and information that may be difficult to express. In doing so, people can engage more deeply with the processes of empathy activated by the exhibition and join others—friends and strangers alike—in creating something new. More than 100 works of art, including photography, painting, textile, and moving image, many of which are recent acquisitions

being shown at the Tang for the first time. Among these works are: Laurel Nakadate’s self-portraits from the series 365 Days: A Catalogue of Tears, 2010, for the month of January; Noa Eshkol’s Window to the Night, 1981; Erin M. Riley’s Believe Me, 2020; Lorna Simpson’s Cloudscape, 2004. Curator’s Tour with Rebecca McNamara will take place 3 p.m. July 9, and at noon on July 14. SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Jewish Cultural Festival, with a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, presents a virtual discussion of Dana Fast in her story, “Good in the Midst of Evil,” at 7 p.m. on July 7 via Zoom. The book was published in April. This is Dana’s saga of her experiences in World War II Warsaw, Poland, as chronicled by

her daughter, Yvona. The Warsaw ghetto was sealed off in 1940. The Jews made up about 30% of the city’s population and were shut into 2.4% of the city’s land area. About 400,000 Jews were compelled to live in the ghetto of which 100,000 died of starvation, the rest deported to death camps. Judas Priest - 50 Heavy Metal Years Sets October Albany Date ALBANY — Judas Priest will get the opportunity to celebrate their 50th anniversary with the launch of a new North American fall tour. The band will perform Oct. 15 at MVP Arena in Albany, marking the second date of the tour. Judas Priest originally formed in 1970 in Birmingham, England. Throughout the 70’s, Priest were responsible for helping trail blaze metal with such classic offerings as ‘Sad Wings of Destiny’ (1976) ‘Sin After Sin’ (1977) and ‘Hell Bent for Leather’ (1978) as well as one of the genre’s top live recordings ‘Unleashed in the East’ (1979) among others. During the 80’s, Priest conquered the world, becoming a global arena headliner on the strength of such all-time classics as ‘British Steel’ (1980)

Judas Priest perfoms Oct. 15 in Albany with Queensryche.

and ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ (1982), as well as being one of the first metal bands to be embraced by the then-burgeoning MTV, plus performing at some of the decades biggest concerts (1980’s Monsters of Rock, 1983’s US Festival, and 1985’s Live Aid) and being the first to exclusively wear leather and studs – a look that

began during this era and would eventually be embraced by metal heads throughout the world. The 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour will also feature Queensryche as openers and is being fueled by the highest charting album of Priest’s career, ‘Firepower,’ which peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200. CITY MOVES CLOSER TO DEVELOPING SARATOGA SPRINGS FIRE STATION NO. 3

by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council this week awarded two bids and authorized the subsequent signing of two contracts totaling more than $5 million that will move the city closer to its long-anticipated third fire station. “This is a momentous moment for all of us,” Accounts Commissioner Dillon Moran said, while awarding the bids to Bunkoff General Contractors of

Latham for up to $4.436 million, and DLC Electric of Troy for up to $638,000. In all, six companies had been vying for the contracting bid, seven for the electrical work. Saratoga Fire Station No. 3 will be developed at 16 Henning Road, roughly opposite the BOCES campus, and will serve the city’s eastern plateau. The city’s two other stations are located in close proximity to downtown, and on the west side, respectively. Plans proposed last summer depicted a one-story building

Plans for the proposed Saratoga Springs Fire Station No. 3 submitted to the city in June, 2021

measuring 15,500 square feet with dark green siding with white trim, centered on a 2.4acre parcel. The plans may since have been slightly modified. Earlier this month, city Finance Commissioner Minita Sanghvi announced the city of Saratoga Springs sold $17,137,299

Public Improvement Serial Bonds at a Net Interest Cost of 3.90% the proceeds of which will target several capital projects, a third fire/EMS facility among them. That fire station tops the cost list of 2022 requested, with requests of $6.7 million and $400,000. “The city chose to postpone

financing for the construction of the third fire/EMS station during the pandemic, a fiscally prudent measure given the uncertainty of 2020 and 2021,” Sanghvi said. “Our city has recovered to the point that we are now moving ahead with financing and construction of this vital city resource.”
