History OF SARATOGA Before the Racetracks, Hog Heaven

Contact The Saratoga County History Roundtable at: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com

Not that they’re boasting, but lots of people like the ring of the “health, history and horses” theme used by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. But 160 years ago, the thoroughbreds didn’t yet run at that seasonal business on Union Avenue, and the county motto could have been “homesteads, harvests and hogs.”

Yes, there were horses. And thousands of sheep and cows and chickens, too. But this is a story about filling the pork barrel, and it has nothing to do with politics.

In the middle of the 19th century, railroads and refrigeration hadn’t yet transformed the meat industry, turning Chicago into a city that could support both the Cubs and White Sox. Food distribution was local and regional, not national.

There were 4,800 farms in Saratoga County. Every town had dozens. Many raised pigs to sell at market, and a leading porkproduction breed, the Duroc, was first identified here.

Being close to Albany made Saratoga and Washington counties important pork-raising areas from the 1830s to the 1870s, according to Breeds of Livestock in America, a livestock history.

At the time, Albany was a meat packing center. Pigs could be brought there, and ham, bacon, sausage and salt pork could move to customers, using the Erie

Canal, Hudson River, or any of the gravel turnpikes that converged at the state capital.

In 1855, census figures show there were 26,003 pigs in Saratoga County. Just for comparison, there were 306 pigs being raised in the county in 2002, according to federal agricultural statistics. In 1865, the census said there were 14,704 hogs, and added a new statistic: 2.9 million pounds of pork produced. The number of pigs rebounded to 19,115 in 1875, with 2.2 million pounds produced. But even then, the big slaughterhouse action was moving to the Midwest.

The Duroc, which became a desirable commercial breed because of its quick growth, big litters, hardiness and large size, originated here. Its attributes were recognized by a farmer from Milton, who lived on what today is Camp Boyhaven, the Boy Scout camp in the hilly woods between Rock City Falls and Middle Grove.

The story goes that in 1823 24-year-old Isaac Frink took a mare to a farm near Amsterdam to breed with a famous racing stallion named Duroc. That farmer also had pigs, and Frink bought a young boar and named it Duroc. Its offspring became the Duroc line. The Duroc was later crossed with the Jersey Red, and the Duroc-Jersey has been a leading pork production pig ever since.

Saratoga County Duroc breeders furnished animals to farms in Ohio, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska as agriculture moved westward. Rails and refrigeration turned meat packing into a national industry by the 1880s, and in Chicago Philip Armour and Gustav Swift became rich. Here, the industry slowly shrank away, and there are no longer any meat processing plants in the Capital Region.

Frink, a prosperous Quaker, may have protected runaway slaves before the Civil War as part of the Underground Railroad. He was a founding director of the Ballston Spa National Bank in 1838. His farmhouse still stands on Boyhaven Road; it is used as the Boy Scout camp’s office.

Shaping Saratoga’s Landscape for 35 Years

The Heritage Garden Club Creates Fertile Ground to Grow the Common Good

For 35 years, the Heritage Garden Club members have been working diligently to soften and civilize Saratoga’s urban spaces. Their legacy endures all around us.

IMPROVING VISITOR’S FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The grounds of the Saratoga Heritage Area Visitor Center were the first project the Heritage Garden Club took on in 1987, when they became a District IV member of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State.

They looked beyond the beautiful historic Beaux-Arts style building at 297 Broadway, recognizing that around this “gateway to the city” was an opportunity to establish environmental conservation as a community priority.

“It was in disarray, all full of weeds, and just nothing there. We’ve developed it into the beautiful garden it is today,” said Mariann Gold, Vice President of the Heritage Garden Club. Among the many gorgeous

flowers in the garden there, you’ll also see a plague dedicated to Maki Jacknowitz, one of the club’s founding members.

Saddened by the fact that the area has been closed since September 2021 because of damage to the patio roof, Gold said she is hopeful the outdoor space, which has several picnic tables, will reopen soon.

“People really enjoy going back there, so that would be wonderful,” she said.

GROWING THE GOOD

The tenacity and commitment of the club’s members led to the creation of the Garden of Hope at the Saratoga Hospital - a place where people can lessen their tensions by coming in direct contact with nature.

Their efforts can also be seen fostering a sense of civic pride at the Gideon Putnam Burying Grounds. Although mostly known for their public gardens, the Heritage Garden Club has a broader purpose; it is where those seeking a social outlet can exercise their talents to shape the world beyond their homes.

“You don’t have to be a gardener to be in the garden club,” said Gold.

AGENTS OF CHANGE

The Heritage Garden Club effects change in the community by offering education, resources, and networking opportunities for its members.

They collect donations for area food pantries, gifts for the Saratoga County Children’s Committee Empty Stocking Project, as well as clothing for students and those in need throughout the community.

The club hosts garden therapy sessions, an annual bar-b-que, a Harvest High Tea, and decorate wreaths and trees for the residents of the Woodlawn Commons assisted living facility.

At the Home of the Good Shepard, they distribute gifts and fundraise for Water for South Sudan, a project that provides people in remote villages access to clean, safe water.

The Heritage Garden Club activities are funded by donations, a grant from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust, sales of garden crafts during the Soroptimist International of Saratoga County Secret Gardens Tour, and their annual plant sale.

Woerner Introduces Legislation Supporting Victims’ Rights

SARATOGA COUNTY —

Victims of misdemeanors currently do not have the opportunity to make a statement at sentencing describing the impact they experienced as a result of the perpetrators’ actions.

This week, Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake) held a joint press conference with Queens Democrat Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Queens Democrat Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky to change the current statement status for victims of misdemeanors, and highlight legislation they introduced to strengthen the rights of crime victims in New York State overall.

Whereas the presenting of a victim impact statement at sentencing is permitted for felonies, victims of misdemeanors do not have the same opportunity. The bill sponsored by Woerner and Stavisky would permit the judge in a sentencing hearing to allow

an impact statement from victims.

An additional bill introduced by Amato would require district attorneys to inform crime victims of their right to submit a victim impact statement to be placed in a perpetrator’s file for review upon application for parole and would also require that victims be informed of an impending hearing and the right to appear at that hearing.

“These bills give crime victims a voice,” Woerner said, in a statement “The effect of a criminal act, whether a felony or misdemeanor, can be profound and devastating, with far ranging physical, mental, and financial consequences for the victim. Victims of all crimes should have the opportunity to express how they were impacted by an individual’s criminal actions to those who will determine that individual’s punishment.”

Both bills are currently in the Assembly Committee on Codes.

County DA Requests Dismissal of Charge Against Saratoga Springs Protester

Figuereo was additionally charged with two misdemeanor counts of obstructing governmental in connection with his alleged disruption of Saratoga Springs City Council meetings on July 6

and July 20. Those two charges were dismissed earlier this month.

The April 22 letter by District Attorney Heggen concludes: “My office has determined that the continued prosecution of this disorderly conduct charge does not serve the interest of justice and by this letter we are requesting that the courts dismiss that charge in the interest of justice.”

New Business Sets Up Shop in Former Saratoga Guitar

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

A youthful Brian Eno, his face aglow with vibrance and wonder bumps jackets with Barbara Streisand draped in a Superman T-Shirt and sporting a pair of tube sox. Two rows over, Peter, Paul and Mary share smiles in front of a brick wall in Greenwich Village marking their debut, circa-1962. Next to them, the Clash scowl alongside a brick alleyway of north London’s Camden Market marking their debut, circa1976. A collection of string instruments are being released from their protective casings a few yards away. Memories of Matt McCabe, the previous longtime occupant of this space, permeate the room.

“I’m a violin maker by trade,” explains Thomas Dunn. “Six generations of violin making is where I come from so there are a lot of traditions here: the oldest family of violin makers in the world, being able to carry on a Saratoga tradition, and honoring Matt’s memory. That’s something that’s cool for both of us.”

That “us” is Thomas Dunn and Jason Planitzer. The two men have embarked on a collaborative effort to open a new shop at 480 Broadway, located next to City Hall and the Saratoga Music Hall in the space previously occupied by Saratoga Guitar.

Dunn’s expertise is musical instruments. Planitzer’s is in vinyl records. “We were both looking for a space, met, liked each other’s vibe and thought: maybe we could do something together. So, we decided to share this space and make this kind of the music center of Saratoga,” Dunn says.

They are hoping to open the shop as early as this weekend. Once fully operational, it will

include new and used instruments for sale for players, musical instrument lessons, instrument repair and restoration work and a full line of accessories – from strings and picks, to pedals and more.

For music fans and vinyl collectors, the store will also feature a collection of albums.

“The stars aligned, and we are able to carry on the tradition,” says Planitzer, originally from Pittsburgh and relocated to upstate with his wife in January after having lived in Brooklyn for 15 years.

OFF-TRACK RECORDS

“I’ve collected since I was in college, that’s 20 years now, and during the pandemic my collection got a little out of hand,” he says with a laugh. “It grew exponentially.”

Planitzer said he hopes to start with 2,000 to 3,000 mostly used records. An already existing relationship with music distributors will enable him to carry some new vinyl as well. “We will buy, we will sell, we will trade. Same as with the guitars and the stringed instruments,” he says.

Despite the ever-changing soundscape of technologies over the previous decades, there remains and indeed is growing a market of people who love vinyl records. In 2021, a resurgence in vinyl records continued for the 15th consecutive year, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. And new vinyl revenues grew 61% to $1 billion over the past calendar year – having last exceeded that $1 billion mark back in 1986, according to an article published by Variety in March that is titled: Vinyl Sales Soar.

“I work in film and television, I’m a location scout; I read scripts and then go find the places where they film. That’s what I did in New York City for the past 14 years and now more and more film

work is coming upstate – shooting in Schenectady, Troy, in Albany,” Planitzer says. He calls his part of the collaboration with Dunn: OffTrack Records. “This is something I can do in addition to film work, much as I did in Brooklyn. At that time, I worked at a record shop - it’s called Record Grouch – and that was a blast. I love getting music from a shop. I get a lot of music online now, and I think we all do, but there’s nothing like going into a shop.”

6TH GENERATION VIOLIN

Dunn is carrying on the traditions of the Frirsz family of luthiers who began making violins in the mid-1800s. Originally from Hungary, they are known as the oldest family of violin makers in the world, spanning five generations.

Fourth generation family member Maximilian relocated to North America and eventually set up a shop in midtown Manhattan where he became known as one of the foremost luthiers and restorers in the country. Max’s son, Nicholas, took over the business in the 1980s and relocated to Saratoga Springs in the ‘90s.

When he was a teenager, Dunn began working with fifth-generation master Nicholas Frirsz on small repairs and learning how to make violins. In 2011 Dunn became Frirsz full apprentice. Dunn calls his segment of the collaborative space Sixth Generation Violin - carrying on the family methods, traditions, and secrets of violin making.

“Those connections we built up over six generations,” Dunn says. “And we will have a range of new and used instruments for sale, from high-end instruments of unique boutique makers and

luthiers, custom-made, to student rentals – violins, cellos, guitars, ukuleles, fretted instruments.”

A room where musical lessons will be offered is being developed in the back of the store, and Dunn says an instructor will include someone who formerly worked for Matt McCabe.

The men say they aim to provide a personal touch and human care for the community of music lovers and practitioners in the region.

“We’re excited to be here and hope to be a part of the Saratoga music community for years to come,” Dunn said.

Planitzer and Dunn say they hope to open this weekend and plan to be open most weekdays during regular business hours and weekends from noon to 5. For more information about Sixth Generation Violin and Off-Track Records, visit the store at 480 Broadway, or call 518-893-9188.

(DON’T FEAR) THE TAX MAN

Death and taxes, as we all know, are the inevitabilities in life. We spend a lot of time and energy avoiding the former and almost as much mental capital trying to prevent the latter. But should we? As unpleasant as they are, taxes are born out of a successful endeavor where we earned or won money in some form. That being said, you should still be “tax-aware” with your finances to minimize the drag that taxes have on your bottom line. After all, we don’t want to line Uncle Sam’s pockets unnecessarily.

Don’t let the tax tail wag the investment dog. I frequently encounter situations where somebody has made prudent investment decisions in their taxable account and is now the proud owner of unrealized capital gains. Too often, people are hesitant to sell some or all of these successful

investments because they will have to pay taxes on those gains. Unless the goal is to admire the balance in your investment account, you will have to sell at some point to be able to spend that money. The surefire way to avoid paying taxes is to let the investment decline in value. Not ideal. We want to be prudent with managing the risks in our portfolio without letting taxes prevent action. Being proactive about taxloss harvesting and asset location can also help offset some of the tax burden. Unsure what this entails? Reach out with questions.

As part of a “tax-aware” strategy, it is imperative to take advantage of tax-advantaged accounts. Government legislation has created a variety of tax-advantaged accounts that assist individuals in reducing their tax bills. However, be careful – they usually have a catch. Typically, taxes and penalties may apply if you try to use the money for anything other than the account’s intended purpose (retirement, education, healthcare). Most people are aware of the 401(k) or other employersponsored plans, so I will take this opportunity to highlight two of my other favorites.

A Roth IRA allows money to grow and be withdrawn taxfree, assuming specific qualifications are met. I’ve written here before about the versatility and benefits these accounts provide, but it is worth highlighting again. It can also be used as a hybrid

emergency/retirement fund since contributions (not total account value) can be withdrawn, without taxes or penalties, at any time. For those who may not qualify for contributions based on their income level, there are other ways to get money into this type of account. I’m just skimming the surface for brevity, but I recommend exploring these accounts in more detail.

I believe another underutilized account is the Health Savings Account (HSA). Contributions into this account are only eligible for those enrolled in a high deductible healthcare plan, but the benefits cannot be understated. Contributions to, and distributions from, an HSA are entirely free of federal, state, and Social Security/Medicare taxes as long as they are used to pay for qualified medical expenses. That’s right, completely tax-free on the way in and the way out. Additionally, account balances above a certain level are typically eligible to be invested for longterm growth. For added versatility, non-medical distributions can occur after age 65, with the only difference being that the distributions are taxed (not penalized).

Astute readers and fans of classic rock noticed the allusion to the famous Blue Oyster Cult song, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” in the title of this piece. The song deals with embracing the inevitability of death to get on with your life. In a similar vein, shifting your focus regarding taxes can help you enjoy

the fruits of your labor and investments. Proper tax planning can help mitigate the impact of taxes on your financial picture, and working with a financial advisor can help identify missed opportunities.

GREENFIELD Summer Camp

Greenfield Summer Day Camp Simply Focuses on Kids Just Being Kids in the Great Outdoors

In today’s over-structured world where kids spend a big part of their days looking at electronics, the one thing most grade school parents agree on is when school is out, they want their kids out… in the great outdoors. When summer comes, the pressure is on for parents to adequately entertain them without overscheduling or breaking the bank. The Town of Greenfield’s summer day camp is a perfect solution, with its morning-only format and a full array of traditional activities that promise to leave children exhausted and happy.

Campers spend 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. at the charming Greenfield Elementary School, at 3180 Route 9N, that sits in a rural setting just a few miles from Saratoga Springs in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Activities include rotating stations of fun, featuring such things as obstacle courses, hiking, Taekwondo, arts and crafts, as well as many organized games and sports like soccer, flag football, kickball and more. Campers participate in themed days like “Super Hero” and “Hat” Day and painting, tie-dying and rock climbing. They receive weekly visits from Uncharted Wild LLC to encounter live wild animals, regularly scheduled “Water Days” for splashing around and even the chance to pal around with some local llamas. Rainy day activities

bring the children inside to the school’s gymnasium and cafeteria. Fridays end each week on a sweet note with treats from ice cream trucks and Stewart’s Shops. “Our ever-changing schedule will send kids home exhausted and dirty from an action-packed morning at camp with friends,” said Town of Greenfield Recreation Director Rebecca Sewell.

Students ages 5 to 14 are welcome and will be supervised with a 2:10 counselor/camper ratio. The camp features 25 trained camp counselors, most of whom once attended this camp themselves. Parents can choose early drop off for an additional cost and all students are eligible for the town’s Free Lunch Program, daily on-site and during camp. Signups open in March to Town of Greenfield residents, and in April open to the public. More information can be found by calling Rebecca Sewell at 518-428-2267 or visiting www.greenfieldny.org. Scholarships are available. The Town of Greenfield is home to 8,200 residents in Greenfield, Porter Corners and Middle Grove. It spans more than 41,000 acres of land bordering the Adirondacks. Other summer activities sponsored by the Town of Greenfield include golf and tennis camps and a PGA Junior golf league at the town’s Brookhaven Park and Golf Course in Porter Corners.

Saratoga Farmers’Market Will Open Outdoor Season in Temporary Quarters

SATURDAYS

9:30 A.M. - 1:30 P.M.

WILTON MALL FOOD COURT

The month of May will be a bit different for the Saratoga Farmers’ Market this year. Normally, this is when we clang our opening day bells at our outdoor location on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning at High Rock Park.

This year, we will be elsewhere for a few weeks, and we invite you to join us there.

We kick off our outdoor season at 3 p.m. this coming Wednesday, May 4, outside the City Center Parking Garage while construction crews widen the sidewalks at High Rock Park and build it into the downtown segment of the Saratoga Greenbelt Trail. Our Saturday market will go outdoors at 9 a.m. on May 7 in the parking lot of the Wilton Mall, marking our third year of opening at that locale.

We look forward to being at High Rock by Memorial Day. In the meantime, spring is in full spring. Market stalls are brimming over with fresh bags of arugula and spinach, seasonal greens like ramps and claytonia, radishes, pea shoots, and the first chard and kale of the season. Eggs are abundant. Chicken, pork, beef, lamb, rose veal, and goat meat will soon be available. Our chefs will also be in action, offering a range of warm, ready-to-eat items.

The COVID-19 pandemic coupled with construction prevented the market from operating at High Rock in 2020 and part of 2021. The market was set to

return to its usual outdoor location at High Rock Park until we learned in late March that this would not be possible.

The city said it was planning to extend the Saratoga Greenbelt Trail from Lake to Excelsior avenues, right across the lawns outside the High Rock pavilions where the farmers market takes place. Construction would be in progress, and parking would be limited.

“We were taken by surprise,” admits Mark Bascom of Owl Wood Farm and president of the market’s board.

“We immediately worked to find solutions for our market to return to High Rock Park as soon as possible.”

As of now, work on the Greenbelt is in progress. Lawns outside the market pavilions are being dug up. When completed, this portion of the trail will connect downtown Saratoga to Exit 15 trail at Excelsior Avenue. It will consist of a 10-foot wide ADA-accessible paved path along High Rock and Excelsior avenues and a continuous sidewalk network. The city plans to replace 49 trees with 62 healthier trees.

For many longtime Saratoga Farmers Market vendors, news of the construction turned into an opportunity to build better relationships with city officials. Beth Trattel, owner of Something’s Brewing and market board vice president, praised both the city and the mall for expressing their support for the market’s continuation.

“The City Center and its executive director Ryan McMahon generously stepped up to let us use the space in front of the parking garage structure for the Wednesday market,” she said. “It has good visibility and will coincide with our goal of providing a vibrant community meeting place that is accessible to all.”

Outdoor markets will begin on Wednesday, May 4. Find us online at www.saratogafarmersmarket.org, where you can sign up for our weekly newsletter and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

AVO Nice Day

Hello my Foodie Friends!

In recent decades, avocados have surged in popularity. We find ourselves making this one of our favorite foods by putting it on toast, in avocado bowls, smoothies, salads, fries, soups, scrambled eggs, dressing, gelato, brownies, pizza, pancakes, yes, and even ice cream. These are among the large number of ways we have incorporated avocados into our diets. You can even just grab a spoon and eat avocado with some salt and pepper. Avocados can make just about anything taste better. Avocados may be considered a “high fat food;” however, they are also considered a super food. Not only does the fat from avocados provide essential nutrients, they also help to absorb nutrients such as vitamins from other foods eaten. They are also considered a high source of fiber.

Avocados can be challenging to cut. They may seem harmless but can be a bit troublesome in trying to remove the pit. With the growing popularity of avocados, many people are learning that cutting the tasty and healthy fruit the wrong way can lead to a term called “avocado hand,” when an individual injures their hand trying to remove the pit from the avocado in a way that causes injury to the hand.

There is a tool that can assist with avoiding this injury. Removing the pit is the most dangerous part of avocado preparations The avocado tool makes the job way easier thanks to the rounded blades, which grip onto the avocado pit so you can twist and remove it without cutting through your hand. The Avocado Tool from Microplane features a straight edge blade with an exaggerated wide curve and rounded tip to effortlessly slice through avocado’s tough skin and scoop the flavorful flesh inside. Three prongs at the base of the tool safely and easily handle the tricky task of pitting the avocado without resorting to using knives. For easy clean up, it’s also dishwasher safe. Use the straight edge to cut through tough avocado skin, then pierce the pit with the tool’s prongs and twist to remove the pit! This Cinco de Mayo, scoop, slice, and serve avocados easily and safely with the Microplane Avocado Tool.

At Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place, we offer many spices and culinary tools that can be used to help you with your Cinco de Mayo culinary creations. “Avo nice day” this Cinco de Mayo. Remember Foodie Friends, “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Solo Exhibition of Work by Bugzdale Opens May 4

LAKE GEORGE — A solo exhibition featuring the work of Bugzdale opens at the Courthouse Gallery in Lake George on May 4.

Bugzdale, AKA Anthony Jackson, is from Mandeville, Jamaica, and grew up in New York City. Through drawing, painting, and a variety of other media Bugzdale aims to amplify ideas about the black experience in society.

“I focus on the themes that affect my community: class, race, police brutality, corrupt government, death, and other issues, to show the way in which black men and women are made targets, and to find a way to celebrate the lives of these under-represented individuals,” the artist said, in a statement. “I create a world

where these people can survive, and find a way to be themselves, while being free from imprisonment, both metaphorical and real.

I want to represent the ‘humanness’ of these figures, outside of media stereotypes.”

His recent exhibitions include

A Seat At The Table, Likkle Gallery, Queens, NY; Infinite Uncertainty, Opalka Gallery at Russell Sage College, Albany, NY; The Other Virus Exhibit, Second St. Studios, Troy, NY, and his MFA Thesis Show 2020, SUNY Albany University Museum, Albany, NY.

Local Athletes Excel at National Ninja League

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The competitive team from the Saratoga and Albany Ninja Labs recently returned from a trip to Greensboro, NC to compete at the National Ninja League World Championships. Over 1800 ninjas attended the 3-day event (April 1st-3rd). The Championship event featured a 3 stage obstacle course and skills competition to declare a World Champion and name a World’s Strongest Ninja in each division.

23 athletes competed on

Stage 1 at the NNL World Championships with 11 of them advancing to Stage 2. Annika Kilinski and Adelena Messier both advanced to Stage 3 in their age divisions. Kiliniski took top honors in the Young Adult Division (ages 15-17) becoming the NNL World Champion. Messier returned home placing 3rd in the World and 3rd in the “World’s Strongest Ninja” category in the Preteen Division (Ages 11-12).

Ninja Lab Head Coach Geoff Snyder and the rest of the coaching

International Compost Awareness Week

Life can surprise you. If you are open and available to see something differently, you can bring a new idea in. If welcomed in, and experienced, it may even evoke JOY!

I LOVE COMPOST… That’s right. For those of us that do, we are celebrating - International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) May 1-7, 2022.

This year’s theme is... Recipe for Regeneration: COMPOST. ICAW USA gives us a simple and quick explanation of what it is all about. “This year’s theme highlights the important role compost can play in turning nutrient-starved dirt into rich, healthy soil where our fruits and vegetables can grow and thrive. Just as a chef pulls together the best ingredients to create the perfect recipe, the 2022 theme, Recipe for Regeneration: COMPOST focuses on the crucial role recycling our food scraps and yard trimmings plays by creating compost, which when added to our soil results in a recipe that makes our food more nutritious, the air we breathe cleaner and our climate healthier overall.”

Food waste, allowed to decompose properly, is energy. And that energy has also fed my creativity. In a moment of pure bliss my passion for photography met my passion for backyard composting which resulted in a collection of photographs called LOVE COMPOST. Developing since 2016, and first presented in 2019, LOVE COMPOST has been exhibited at Uncommon

Grounds, Four Seasons Cafe, included as a featured installation at SPAC’s Saratoga Wine and Food Festival 2019, and most recently at the NYS Organics Summit 2022 in Albany.

May 5-7, LOVE COMPOST will make an appearance at Lifestyles located at 436 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Lifestyles will be hosting an Eileen Fisher event, at which a selection of gallery wrapped LOVE COMPOST images will be on display. Eileen Fisher’s sustainable clothing brand is responsible by design, the fibers are sourced from organic farmers, and fair-trade methods are used to improve those communities where the garments are made. They adhere to a no waste policy, “Where others see waste, we see possibility.” Using sustainable materials and envisioning a future world without waste is at the core of their business. Lifestyles’ owner Heidi Owen West is deliberate in choosing brands that are earth conscious and give back, a practice in line with how she gives back to her community.
