Time is often referred to as a human construct, but time zones are definitely man-made, and they have a direct connection to Charles Dowd of Saratoga Springs and the month of November, when standard time began in 1883, and 21 years later when time ran out for Charles.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — There are more than 60 cities, 500 villages, and 900 towns in New York State, and each has until Dec. 31 to opt-out of two new state initiatives calling for on-site cannabis consumption lounges, and dispensaries authorized to sell cannabis in their respective communities.

On March 31, New York State legalized adult-use cannabis by passing the Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act, or MRTA. The legislation created a new Office of Cannabis Management governed by a Cannabis Control Board to oversee and implement the law, issue licenses and develop regulations outlining how and when business can participate in the new industry. A History of Time - Father Time (Zones): Charles Ferdinand Dowd by Isobel Connell | The Saratoga County History Roundtable saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com Isobel Connell is a native of the United Kingdom and a retired engineer. She currently is a volunteer in the research room at Brookside Museum and a trustee at the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum. Isobel can be reached at isobel@brooksidemuseum.org

Local time once was set by the noon mark. Noon was defined to be the time at which the sun was directly overhead. This meant, for every approximately 69 miles travelled west, the moment of noon differed by four minutes. For example, the clocks in Boston were set about three minutes ahead of clocks in Worcester, MA. This was all well and good, so long as one never left home, or only travelled north and south, but the idea of long-distance travel became more accessible with the advent of the railroads. On May 10, 1869, Leland Stanford, the president of the Central Pacific Railroad Company of California, ceremonially tapped in the “Last Spike” at Promontory Summit, Utah, and the era of trans-continental rail travel across the United States had begun. But did the trains run on time then? And if they did, who was to say, because whose time did they run on? By 1879, there were about 500 railroad companies through the country. These companies defined their own time system, based on the local time of one of the cities in their region. To travel just from Portland, Maine, to Buffalo, New York, took passengers through four different time systems. Something had to change. In 1868, Charles Ferdinand Dowd, a Yale graduate from Madison, Connecticut, together with his wife, Harriet Miriam North, moved from North Granville to Saratoga Springs where they established the Temple Grove Ladies Seminary. He put his mind to the problem of trains and timetables. He did consider the uniform national time, as adopted in England, but studying solar times for 8000 locations across the United States revealed time differences of up to 4 hours, so this was impractical. In October 1869, Dowd presented a plan to the Convention of Railroad Superintendents, and, following their approval, in 1870, published a pamphlet entitled “System of National Time for Rail-Roads”. In it he proposed 4 regions across the country, with

“Washington Time” the standard time for Atlantic States. (He later modified this to start at the 75th meridian west of Greenwich, to stop arguments over Washington or New York). Similarly, the Mississippi Valley States would be one hour behind Washington Time, Rocky Mountain States two hours behind and Pacific States three hours behind. These divisions were based on approximately 15 degrees of longitude, and within each division, the time would be uniform. Unsurprisingly, there was reluctance to adopt the suggestion. Railway companies and their associated cities were unwilling to cooperate. Albany, New York City and Montreal were only different by a minute, but all insisted on keeping their own times. However, Dowd persisted with promoting his ideas and, on November 18th, 1883, at 9am, the regulator clock at the Western Union Telegraph System building in New York City was stopped. After precisely three minutes and 58.38 seconds the clock was restarted, and this was the birth of Eastern Standard Time. During the day, a similar event happened at three other locations across the country to start Central, Mountain Standard and Pacific Times.

Charles Dowd earned his PhD from New York University in 1888, and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Science, Letters and Arts of London in the same year, but continued working as principal of Temple Grove until his retirement in 1898. Temple Grove was then led by his son, Franklin D. Dowd, until it closed in 1900. In 1903 the buildings were sold to Mrs. Lucy Skidmore Scribner, and ultimately became part of Skidmore College. Tragically, at approximately 5:30 pm on Saturday, November 12th, 1904, Dr. Dowd was killed by the southbound train No. 6 at the North Broadway crossing of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. According to newspaper reports, his body was thrown thirty feet and was “mangled almost beyond recognition”. The coroner, Dr. Richard H. McCarthy, in his last act before retiring at the end of 1904, declared the railroad company “wholly responsible for the death of the said Charles F. Dowd,” as the crossing was ungated and dangerous with extremely poor visibility for pedestrians. A spherical sun dial honoring Dr. Dowd can be found on Church Street in Saratoga Springs, behind the Adirondack Trust Co.

Are Your Affairs in Order?

by David Rath, CFA

Continuum Wealth Advisors

for Saratoga TODAY My wife turned to me and said, “I wouldn’t know what to do if you died.” I had just gotten off the phone with my father who was simultaneously mourning the sudden loss of his brother and trying to sort out his finances. Talk about a wakeup call. As a financial professional, I’d like to think that I’m ahead of the game regarding this sort of stuff, but her comment made me realize I could do better. I handle the family finances and as a result, had inadvertently left her in the dark as to what would happen in the worst sort of circumstances. Let’s examine a few simple things you can do to prepare your loved ones. The first financial question that arises when someone passes is “ok, what did they have going on?” Accounts, passwords, investments, debts, real estate, beneficiaries, the list goes on. This burden of data gathering will often fall to an executor named in your will. If there is no clear instruction or executor for an estate, the presiding court will determine a willing individual. Think about this for a second. If you suddenly leave this Earth, someone who you care about will have to deal with the emotional

stress of losing you and the mental stress of getting your affairs in order. An organized list of financial accounts, updated annually, can greatly decrease this burden. Do you have an estate plan? According to a survey by Caring. com, 2/3 of adults in this country do not currently have a will. I get it – it is not the most fun thing in the world to think about and it costs money, so it is easy to push to the back burner. The alternative is not great. Anything with a beneficiary designation like a life insurance policy is cut and dried – everything else is up for debate and probate courts and attorneys may spend a good amount of their time (and your money) to figure out who gets what. Speaking of beneficiary designations, are yours up to date? It is not a great look when an ex-husband gets a life insurance payout after his former spouse has remarried. Again, an annual review of this is recommended. An alternate angle to approach this topic is one where you become incapacitated but have not yet passed. A health care proxy allows someone you designate to make medical decisions for you. These decisions range from acceptable treatments to measures taken to sustain life. It is pretty heavy stuff so make sure the person you name is someone you trust and is willing to accept that obligation. Related to

the health care proxy is the idea of naming a power of attorney to take care of your financial affairs while you are incapacitated. A few difficult conversations and proper paperwork instituted before anything happens can save a lot of angst during a stressful period of time for all involved. Day in, day out, we see very little variation to our routine. Wake, coffee, school/work, home, bed, rinse, repeat. During this repetition, it is easy for our minds to become numb to the reality that everything can end in an instant. The Stoics have a helpful phrase to remind themselves of this stark reality: memento mori. Translation: remember that you will die. If that is jarring to think about, it’s because it is supposed to be. I have used this experience to better prepare my family for my absence. My hope is that you will use it as motivation as well. Jacob Weakland

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jacob Weakland, age 36, passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at his home in Saratoga Springs. He was born on September 5, 1985 in Albany, NY, the son of James E. Weakland and Marcia Funke Weakland. He grew up in Round Lake, NY. Jacob will be remembered as a mystic of our times. An angel rarity in human form who found beauty and richness in the smallest, simplest and darkest of times. He turned tragedy into teachings and wore his heart on his sleeve. He spoke rawly from that heart and left his words unfiltered. His beautifully mad brilliance was ahead of his time, and he used it to inspire and bring hope to the lives of so many. Many people have said they owe their lives to Jacob, for he was there to guide them, to love them, to remind them of their worth in their darkest of days. He was a lover of food and used it to create art and delight

for those he cooked for. He had an uncanny passion and talent for photography, writing and motivational speaking. He loved animals and sunrises and found extravagance in the mundane. He cherished his family and found the greatest pride in being an older brother to his younger twin siblings. He was a deeply sensitive family man who made it his mission to plant seeds of love and hope with everyone he met. A true gardener of the heart, that’s what he called connection: planting seeds. Jacob is survived by his parents, James and Marcia Funke Weakland; daughter, Kara Elizabeth Rucinski; brother, Joshua Weakland; sister, Jenna Weakland; countless friends and family who loved and cherished him dearly. A funeral service was held on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY followed by a celebration of life in Jake’s honor at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161. A graveside service was held on Monday, November 22, 2021 at East Union Cemetery for family and close friends. For online condolences, visit compassionatefuneralcare.com

REEFER MADNESS

Local Communities Evaluate Financial Impact of Cannabis continued from front page... Regarding the two initiatives as it correlates to alcohol, Dispensaries are akin to a liquor store, while On-Site Consumption lounges are more akin to a bar, explained Vince DeLeonardis, attorney for the City of Saratoga Springs - which is currently poised to be welcoming of both. To opt out of allowing adultuse cannabis retail dispensaries or on-site consumption licenses, a municipality must pass a local law by Dec. 31. A municipality may choose to opt-out of both or just one of the two types of license. If interested in permitting marijuana retailers or social consumption sites, municipalities need not do anything. Public hearings regarding the matter are underway in many of Saratoga County’s 19 towns, 9 villages and two cities. A decision is anticipated early next month In Malta, said town Supervisor Darren O'Connor. “It’s on for a public hearing on Nov. 29 and then it will be on the agenda on Dec. 6 for the Board to decide what to do, if anything.” The town of Wilton is opting out and will not allow dispensaries or on-site consumption sites town, said Supervisor John Lant. The town of Clifton Park has scheduled a public hearing to

take place on Dec. 6, and town officials in Milton are meeting this week when it is anticipated the board will allow both parts of the measure. “If we do nothing then both are allowed, but we’re going to go through the motions of saying that we’ll allow both to happen in the town,” said Malta Supervisor Benny Zlotnick. “Obviously there will be some benefit in sales tax with sales of that product, but we have no idea what that might be. Public opinion seems to be in favor of on-site consumption, so that’s what we’re going to do. The public comments we have had said we might as well allow both because if other places are going to have it and we don’t allow on-site consumption, then people will drive right by our businesses to go to those locations.” A local excise tax will be imposed on the sale of cannabis products by a retail dispensary to a cannabis consumer at 4% of the products’ price. The tax is distributed to local governments based on where the retail dispensary is located, with threefourths of that tax revenue going to the specific municipality and one-fourth to the county. If a town and a village within a town both allow adult-use sales, the revenue will be distributed

based upon an agreement between the town and village or divided evenly. In the city of Saratoga Springs, for example, on that .04 tax of every dollar, the city would receive .03, and Saratoga County would receive .01. During a recent meeting in the village of Ballston Spa – a meeting ultimately overshadowed by Mayor Larry Woolbright’s sudden resignation announcement - the mayor and all four village trustees said they were unanimously in agreement of allowing dispensaries, and by a 3-2 count agreed to allowing on-site consumption lounges as well. “For now, I’ll consider that we’ve made our call and are not opting out,” Woolbright said, following the village board discussion. If a town passes a local law to opt-out, it only affects the area of the town outside of any village within the town. In the town of Saratoga, the board will move at its Dec. 13 meeting to prohibit on-site consumption venues via a Local Law, but will allow cannabis sales at dispensaries, said town of Saratoga Town Supervisor Tom Wood. “So, that would be only the town of Saratoga and does not include the villages of Schuylerville, or Victory,” Wood said. “I haven’t talked

to (Schuylerville Mayor) Dan Carpenter or (Victory Mayor) Pat Dewey, so I don’t know what their intensions are.” As for area businesses located in municipalities that allow the sale of cannabis, Stewart’s Shops chain of convenience stores will not be among them. “We will not be pursuing a dispensary in any of our shops,” said Erica Komoroske, Stewart's Shops' director of public affairs. Even as municipalities allow adult-use retail dispensaries and/ or on-site consumption licenses, towns, cities and villages may pass local laws and regulations pertaining to local zoning and the location of licensees, hours of

operations, and adherence to local building codes. Municipalities may not, however, opt-out of adult-use legalization. Possession and use of cannabis by adults 21-or-older became legal in New York State earlier this year. Adults over 21 can possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrated cannabis in their personal possession, according to the state Office of Cannabis Management, and up to five pounds of cannabis at their personal residence. People can step outside and smoke, as law passed. Some municipalities have prohibited smoking of all kinds in and around its municipal buildings.

Saratoga TODAY BALLSTON SPA — Labels To Last celebrated their launch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 17 at the Name Bubbles headquarters in Ballston Spa. Name Bubbles is an awardwinning brand specializing in custom waterproof children’s labels. On Nov. 17 they celebrated

the launch of a new division in their company specializing in custom, everyday labels for older adults – Labels To Last. Senator Jim Tedisco was in attendance to award Michelle Brandriss, Founder and President, with a citation for business achievement, along with Milton Town Supervisor, Benny L. Zlotnick, Jr., who thanked her for contributing to the town’s

homes, assisted living facilities, and other senior care. Labeling apparel and other belongings can help seniors keep track of their items and avoid lost or stolen goods. The company’s sales are nationwide, and Brandriss announced that Name Bubbles/ Labels To Last will be expanding to Colorado for easier and faster

shipping to states in the Midwest and on the West Coast, hopefully by the spring of 2022. Roughly 10% of Name Bubbles sales are local. Death Wish Coffee Co. Launches Trading Card Collection SARATOGA SPRINGS – Death Wish Coffee Co., the makers of the World’s Strongest Coffee, has announced the launch of Caffeine Critters, the brand’s first rendition of trading cards inspired by the reviews of Death Wish products from the brand’s wildly caffeinated fans. Immortalizing the craziest and funniest reviews from their fans, Death Wish Coffee Co. is bringing real feedback left by real consumers to life through the artwork of Spinning Yarn Illustration Company. The artwork embodies everything from a skeleton riding the morning coffee wave to a unicorn over the ready-to-drink latte, keeping the brand’s playful spirit alive. The initial launch will feature three new playing cards with names, photos, and reviews from some of the brand’s biggest supporters, recognizing those who drink the extra cup of Death Wish Coffee. All consumers who purchase any of the core coffee products on

Caffeine Critters. Photo provided.

Nov. 18, including the Dark and Medium roasts, will receive one pack of Caffeine Critters trading cards with their purchase, while supplies last. “We’re excited to dive into the nostalgia of trading cards for our devoted Death Wish Coffee drinkers,” said Mike Pilkington, President of Death Wish Coffee Co. “Caffeine Critters is the perfect way to celebrate our die-hard fans and show our appreciation for them leaving such creative reviews on products they love so much.”

Transitions Announces First-Ever Camp Experience MAYFIELD — Transitions, a premier program designed to advance college and career success for young adults with autism spectrum disorders and other learning differences, announces its first-ever day camp at the program’s new Downtown Albany location. Camp is being held on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and allows individuals with autism between ages 15 and 27 to see if the program is a good fit. Students are guaranteed to have fun and grow while learning valuable skills and applying them in real-world situations. Transition camps are filled with activities that bring students closer together in a carefully structured, nurturing, and

supportive environment designed to help them create lasting friendships with like-minded peers. As part of the day camp, students will experience a full range of activities focused on Transitions core curriculum, enrichment classes, and extracurricular activities. Skill building is woven into all activities, and peer mentors are fully trained and vetted to provide students with a safe and transformative experience. Lunch and dinner are included. “Our camps give a glimpse of our full year program,” said Penny Rivenburg, Senior Director, Transitions. “If you join us, you will experience Transitions, you will meet current students and mentors, and learn tools that will

help you in your future. Best of all, you will have fun.” Transitions was founded in 2015, with its main campus in Mayfield, NY. The program opened its second location in Albany in September of this year. The Downtown Albany campus is in partnership with Mildred Elley and allows students to access local colleges and universities while benefiting from the supports offered under the Transitions model. The new campus hosts full year programs and can accommodate both residential and day students. The day camp costs $65 per student. “One of my favorite post-holiday meals is Sheperd’s pie. It’s still a comfort food and one that reminds me of being home for the holidays to this day. The recipe is simple, delicious, and helps use up some holiday leftovers” - Ariel Garland YIELDS: 6-8 servings | PREP & COOK TIME: 40 mins

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 2 pounds ground veal*

• 3 cups frozen sweet corn

• 1 large sweet onion*

• Leftover mashed potatoes

• 1/4 cup ketchup

INSTRUCTIONS: Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Brown the ground veal with the diced onion. Once cooked through and the onions are translucent, add the ketchup. Put the mixture in the bottom of your desired baking dish. Top that with the frozen corn (you can add more or use less depending on your preference). Spread that out evenly over the meat. Next, layer the mashed potatoes over the corn at least an inch thick. Put a few dabs of butter over the top. Bake until warmed through, about 30 minutes. Recipe shared by Hebron Valley Veal. Food

“I See,” said the Turkey Hello my Foodie Friends ! It is amazing to think that the holiday season is here. Planning for family gatherings and meals can be a stressful time during this time of year. We strive for the Norman Rockwell experience of perfect times, perfect food and respectful conversation. Reality is for many people, by John Reardon family gatherings during the holidays are rarely stress-free. I tell my for Saratoga TODAY Thanksgiving story every year because it is one that we reflect on and smile. I also do it to pay homage to my mother-in-law for allowing me to tell this precious story each year. Thanksgiving would not be complete without my real-life story of Grandma and the Turkey. It was a long time ago when our children, Johnny, age 3 and Aubrey 5 months old at the time, would make the annual trek to Grandma and Grandpa’s house to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner and watch football. To begin; let me explain I am a Giants fan and so is my mother-in-law. Therefore, watching the Cowboys is not our favorite thing to do. However, her son is and so is my sister-in-law’s husband. Yep, two Cowboy fans in the same house and they do not like each other! I love football so I watched but the room was silent because the two brothers-in-law do not speak to each other. They were holding their feelings down to make my mother-in-law happy. As the game was being watched, my mother-in-law was busy making a huge feast for all to enjoy. She was very nervous because she wanted everyone to get along. We always ate after the game and this particular game was a tight one. Most Cowboy fans may want to stop reading now. With just seconds left in the game, the Miami Dolphins lined up to make a game-winning field goal and it was blocked by the Cowboys. The brothers-in-law were silent. I wanted to yell in happiness but held back because of the tension. All of a sudden one of the Cowboys (Leon Lett) chased the block field goal and touched it.

nd a e g a s u a Mom’s S ffing u t S y r r e b Cran INGREDIENTS • 1 loaf soft Italian bread

• ¼ cup minced fresh sage

• ½ cup salted butter

• 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary

• ¾ pound mild Italian sausage links, casings removed

• 1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme

• ¾ pound andouille sausage links, casings removed

• 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning

• 2 cups diced yellow onion

• ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

• 2 cups diced celery • 4 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth, divided

• 1 medium orange, zested and juiced, divided • 3 large eggs • ¼ cup minced fresh Italian parsley • 1 (10 ounce) package dry bread stuffing mix • ¼ cup dried cranberries, or more to taste

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C). 2. Dice bread into 3/4-inch cubes; spread into an even layer on a rimmed baking sheet. 3. Bake in the preheated oven, stirring several times, until toasted, about 45 minutes. Keep oven on. 4. Meanwhile, melt butter in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat until foaming, about 2 minutes; do not allow butter to burn. Add Italian and andouille sausages. Cook, breaking sausages up into fine pieces, until just a few bits of pink remain, about 8 minutes. 5. Add onion, celery, garlic, sage, rosemary, thyme, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir frequently until vegetables are softened, about 7 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in 2 cups chicken broth, orange juice, and 1 tablespoon orange zest. 6. Whisk remaining 2 cups chicken broth, eggs, and parsley together in a medium bowl until combined. Slowly stir in the sausage mixture. Gently fold in the toasted bread cubes, stuffing mix, and dried cranberries until evenly mixed. Transfer to a buttered 9x13-inch baking dish and cover tightly with aluminum foil. 7. Bake until an instant-read thermometer reads 150 degrees F (66 degrees C), about 45 minutes. Remove foil and continue to bake until crispy and golden brown on top, about 10 more minutes. 8. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with parsley if desired.

Oh nooo! Well, the Dolphins got another chance and won. Half of the house celebrated, while my mother-in-law and I remained solemn. As the game ended, my mother-in-law continued working with my wife to complete the many dishes all cooking at once. There was a shout from the kitchen and Grandma announced that she had lost her glasses and could not see without them. Immediately, each of the brothers-in-law was pressed into service to find the glasses. These were not just any glasses; they were big and black and hard to lose but there were no glasses to be found. We looked everywhere. Grandma was close to tears when she asked me to check on and baste the turkey. This was a big turkey at 28 lbs. and it smelled great. I grabbed my son Johnny and the baster, which he took charge of, and opened the oven to show him the turkey. He said “look Daddy, the turkey can see better.” Yep, he found the glasses neatly melted in perfect harmony with the bird so it looked like he had eyes! I started laughing and everyone joined in. Needless to say, we had ham and lasagna but no turkey. It didn’t matter because the rest of the day was perfect. Through the fun and sometimes stressful events that can happen during the holidays – especially when we want it to be perfect – it can turn out to be a wonderful family gathering. Among our greatest and most treasured memories are the ones that are based in the kitchen or around a meal. As you get ready this season for your festivities and feasts, stop into Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place. Pick up roasters, basters, thermometers, and more for your meals. You can have that Norman Rockwell family gathering. Have a beautiful Thanksgiving Day. Remember, my Foodie Friends that “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Take Care, John & Paula

Local Mental Health Worker Pens New Book Inspired by Experiences with Kids SARATOGA SPRINGS — S.M. Burke, who has worked with kids for more than 25 years at a local private hospital, has penned a newly released novel, inspired by his experiences working with kids who deal with mental illness. “Oakwood” ($10 softcover, 154 pages, Hodgepodge Publishing), a novel that targets middle grade readers, centers on the story of a 12-year-old boy who spends nine days at a children’s psychiatric hospital. “One of the main reasons I wrote this book was to try and capture what it is like for kids who deal with mental illness, at least from my own experiences,” Burke says. “I also wanted to try and help destigmatize the topic.” Book Synopsis: Twelve-yearold Kyle Womack loves to play the guitar. He has been playing ever since his father gave Kyle his first lesson. But after his parents’ divorce, playing the guitar is all Kyle wants to do. He stops hanging out with his friends. He stops doing his schoolwork. He even stops going to school and is about to fail the sixth grade. After Kyle’s mother takes his guitar away until he starts going back to school, Kyle loses control. The argument between Kyle and his mother is so bad, the police become involved. And

after a visit to the emergency room, Kyle is sent to Oakwood Children’s Hospital so he can be at a safe place. Kyle thinks he knows all about Oakwood. It’s where all of the ‘crazy kids’ go, at least that is what kids at his school think. But as Kyle struggles to accept being at Oakwood, he soon realizes that maybe Oakwood is not as bad as everyone has said it is. Maybe, Oakwood might just be the right place for Kyle to be to work out all of his issues. For information about purchasing the book, visit Northshire Bookstore Saratoga at northshire.com and enter a search for “Oakwood.”

The website, which represents the national golf professional association of more than 29,000 golf professionals and the leading experts on the game of golf, identified Therrien in its article “Ten PGA Jr. League Captains Who Inspired a Decade of Dominance” on Nov. 3. The article, written in

celebration of the PGA Jr. League’s 10th Anniversary, celebrated the “rock star coaches who are the lifeblood of the program” that involved more than 64,000 kids nationally this year. Therrien’s PGA Jr. League had two teams with 24 kids this year, boys and girls ages 8-13 years old. The teams participated in 12 tournaments at Brookhaven and throughout the region. The Town of Greenfield also held “Learn to Golf ” weekly sessions for approximately 100 kids over four weeks this summer. Brookhaven is one of

the only local courses to offer free golf for ages 17 and under. Sign-ups for the 2022 PGA Jr. League and summer lessons begin in February. Therrien plans to add a PGA Jr. U17 program, for children 4-17, as well as adult clinics and a number of both recreational and competitive tournaments.
