Welcome to

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Chris Vallone Bushee

SARATOGA BRIDE My letter is usually where I tell you about some of the features in this issue, such as the new venue on page 8 (new to us anyway!) or where to find our cover bride’s story, page 82, but no, not this time… For this issue, I’m letting our readers tell you why you should be reading (and advertising!) in Saratoga BRIDE magazine: “I just wanted to reach out because I’ve been borderline obsessed with your magazine for years! I’m getting married at the Gideon Putnam this summer and have used your magazine to find most of my vendors …and for inspiration! Thank you for the great publication!” -Nicole C. "THANK YOU!! Your wedding magazine has made planning an upstate New York wedding so easy. I got really overwhelmed with Pinterest and the national publications, but your magazine is a one stop shop with a creative edge and diverse pieces.” -Brittany D. “As the mother of the bride, I have thoroughly enjoyed your magazine!” -Cindy P. “Planning my wedding for 1.5 years in Saratoga meant reading every word of each issue of Saratoga Bride!!” -Abby B. “I got married this past June and by far my favorite magazine for planning was Saratoga Bride! I live in Virginia and would have my mom mail me the issues. I found this magazine much more relevant to my planning process since it focuses on vendors in the area where we were getting married. Plus, the Real Brides section was SUPER helpful for ideas and creating a vision for our own wedding. Many other wedding magazines (in my opinion) showcase what I call "fake magazine weddings.” Saratoga Bride has a down-to-earth feel with all the stories and real weddings – very helpful in creating OUR dream wedding!” - Marissa D. How cool was that?! I love every letter I get, and I thought it was about time I shared some with you! Oh… Speaking of letters! I had a mom call awhile back looking for an Adirondack themed “envelope box” for her daughter’s wedding and assumed (as she should!) that she saw it in Saratoga BRIDE. Unfortunately - she didn’t - but I had no problem finding a local company (check them out below!) that was more than happy to make one up and will now be adding it to their line of Bird Houses! One more benefit of working with a small local bridal magazine : ) As always… Thank You to our advertisers! They are the reason we can provide this wonderful resource to you - FREE OF CHARGE so please support them and mention us by name when doing so… Saratoga BRIDE, a Saratoga TODAY publication. Happy Planning!

ettled among the Schoharie Valley hills is The Sablewood at Highview Springs, a working hay farm elevated into an exquisite venue space.

Situated on 80 acres of hillside hayfields and hardwood forests, the genteel beauty of the property’s two ponds, and its sweeping views of the Catskill Mountains, create the ideal setting for a barn unlike any other. “It’s beyond a barn,” said owner Lisa Shaul. LOFTY EXCELLENCE Elegance abounds at The Sablewood, a spectacular circa 1870's English barn. This substantial structure is set upon a stone foundation, its rich black sable wood siding – a stand out feature in the sea of red barns that traditionally dot the Northern American landscape. Open the grand entrance doors to reveal a breathtaking space that is both stately and welcoming. The 40’ ceilings lift your eyes – and your spirits – up to the magnificent 1920’s chandelier. An impressive 12-feet wide and 8-feet tall, the dazzling chandelier is dripping with 435 fabulous 8-inch spear crystals from its 90 glimmering candles. The barn’s original character has been exquisitely maintained in its architectural details including its hand-hewn native timber ceiling beams and the hayloft ladders that flank the chandelier. Light pours in from the 50 large windows filling the huge open space. “Old barns didn’t have big windows, but we felt it was important to bring in natural light. It’s the one place we strayed from tradition,” said Shaul. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

POLISH AND GRACE For the last 50 years of its 150 year history, The Sablewood was primarily a horse farm. The main room was used as a riding area in the 1960s for prize-winning Morgan horses. When her father, Charlie Shaul, retired from running Shaul Farms, he completed renovation projects at The Sablewood - from its rebuilding to the finishing touches (including their 12 custom-made matching wall sconces and other custom lighting throughout). Lisa’s sister, Holly Shaul, has a wonderful eye for design and has been an integral part of all the renovations and layout of the space, as well. The Sablewood has been a tremendous family effort for sure. It was Shaul’s travels and experience in the corporate world, along with nudges from trusted colleagues that gave her the confidence to embark on The Sablewood’s thoughtful transformation. This shoot was especially meaningful as Tracey Buyce photographed the first wedding held here -under a tent in 2015. “Her gorgeous property photos were an inspiration to move forward with the full scale renovations.” Rena Zeppetelli, owner of Rena’s Fine Flowers, also had a significant landscape and design influence in designing our ceremony circle and outdoor cocktail area. It truly takes a village and Lisa feels so much appreciation for everyone who has helped along the way. She has put careful consideration into each choice she’s made to ensure adherence to safety regulations while providing a unique upscale experience.

SOFT AND SENTIMENTAL Window boxes draping green and white florals greet guests outside while also creating a classy backdrop for bold color. “It’s already beautiful, so you can go as over-the-top or as simple as you like with the colors,” said Shaul. Here, the gorgeous fall colors are just as lovely as a cozy winter wedding, a pleasant springtime soiree, or summer shindig. The radiant heat exuding from the finished flooring and entirely climate-controlled environment provide parties of 20 to 250 people are in complete comfort - regardless of the weather! “Having that climate-control is so key, it’s a necessity to holding an elegant event,” said Shaul. The outdoor ceremony circle is an idyllic place to exchange your vows surrounded by nature, but during inclement weather, inside the barn three sets of giant sliding barn doors close to separate ceremony and reception areas as needed. The Sablewood also welcomes your dog and equine friends to include in ceremonies and photos! For more information, go to TheSablewood.com FOR MORE SEE PAGE 56!

Now What?

P

lanning your wedding can be a time of excitement, joy, stress, frustration and everything in between. Brides spend countless months combing over every detail of the big day to make it magical and memorable. What we rarely address for new brides is the emotional letdown that occurs after your wedding day. This can lead to feeling exhaustion, low grade depression and sadness. SELF-CARE Do not rush back to a full time schedule of every-day life that leaves you feeling exhausted and bummed out. Try to plan a few days post wedding/honeymoon at home catching up on the mundane tasks of running a householdlaundry, grocery shopping, exercise, going to bed at a decent time. Rushing back to work can put you at risk for a post wedding meltdown. BE COMPASSIONATE You may find you are flooded with emotion after your wedding day. I remember walking into the hotel room the day after our wedding and bursting into tears because I didn’t get to try the crab cakes. My sweet husband ordered them that night and surprised me with room service. Even though it seems ridiculous to cry over crab cakes, give yourself the room you need to express whatever emotion comes up. If you have a complicated family situation you may feel angry or resentful about having to

12  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

please both sides of the family and/or parents and step-parents. Don’t judge your feelings, recognize that weddings can bring up deep childhood wounds that stir up anger and sadness. Give yourself lots of compassion and accept your feelings without judgement. PLAN AHEAD One of the best ways to safeguard yourself from post wedding blues is to have something fun on the calendar. Whether it’s another vacation, time with family, going to a concert or dinner with close friends, get something on the calendar that brings you a sense of joy. This can help you look forward to the next chapter as a married couple. While your wedding day is an important milestone, please know, it’s easy to get lost in the details of the event and lose sight of the importance of building your life as a new family. Don’t get so caught up that you forget about what really matters… building a relationship with a strong foundation of trust, friendship and fun. Remember, at the end of the day, who cares if you didn’t get the crab cakes? And by the way, we have crab cakes on every anniversary! Wishing all our Saratoga Brides love and peace in your next chapter!

YOU ARE WORTH IT.

KEEP IT

Simple

WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER PHOTO BY DAWN HONSKY PHOTOGRAPHY FOR THE INN AT FIVE POINTS

T

he definition of an “elopement” is changing. While it used to conjure visions of secretly running away to get married in the spur of the moment, the terms elopement and intimate wedding can now be used almost interchangeably.

cocktail hour hors d’oeuvres to a formal dinner for you a completely personalized menu that accommodates your guests’ dietary restrictions.

“They’ve taken on the same definition, almost becoming synonyms for each other. Whether you call it an elopement or an intimate wedding depends on your take on it,” said Eilis Petrosino, co-owner, with her husband Jim, of The Inn at Five Points.

The entire first floor of the Inn can be reserved as preparation space, the dining room tables removed, chairs set-up for an intimate ceremony space, then reset for dining and dancing afterwards. Guests retire upstairs to the Inn’s 7 bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. The Inn at Five Points has a maximum capacity of 25 people and sleeps 21.

BE TRUE TO YOU

JUST YOUR NEAREST & DEAREST

One aspect of the word “elopement” has remained intact in its connection to weddings –the idea of an escape.

With the freedom of a small wedding comes the excitement of a completely customizable experience.

Couples that decide to elope, free themselves from long lists of planning logistics, the drama of trying to please a large party of guests, and the weight of wedding day debt.

“It can be the true essence of themselves,” said Petrosino.

“Brides should not feel pigeonholed into doing anything they don’t want to do. Intimate weddings give them a chance to create something that’s just theirs without the obligation to do something that’s just not them,” said Petrosino. SMALL, QUICK & PAINLESS Call The Inn at Five Points the moment you decide to elope and they could arrange for you to be married on-site by the weekend – but within six months really is a perfect time frame to pull it all together, said Petrosino. “We’re working with them completely, exclusively, on the planning of it all. We can put them in touch with so many people,” she said. Inn keeper Austin Bayliss will prepare everything from 14  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

In June, a party of 14 hopped aboard the Hoppy Trails Brew Bus after their ceremony at the Inn. They enjoyed their favorite craft beer during the 15-minute ride to Saratoga Lake, where they boarded an Adirondack Cruise & Charter boat for their reception. The bus returned everyone back to the Inn at the end of the evening. “It was super fun and they had a great time with it!” said Petrosino. Elopements are a cost-conscious choice for couples who’d rather invest in a stress-free experience. “To some extent, we’ve forgotten what weddings were about. Small weddings allow you to take back the tradition of setting up the couple financially for their lives together. With small weddings, they’re so happy in the moment - and can walk away with money in their pocket for the future.” saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Calling all brides, moms and best friends…

WE’VE COMPILED A CHEAT SHEET ON EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET PERFECT WEDDING DAY SKIN! WRITTEN BY CRYSTAL COBERT GIDDENS, LE,

OWNER OF FACES ON BEEKMAN STREET ~ ORGANIC SKIN THERAPY STUDIO

1. See a professional 10 to 12 months before your big day to figure out exactly what your skin needs. If you don’t routinely get facials, then find a licensed esthetician with a lot of experience and a great reputation to evaluate your skin and discuss options. Good skin therapy takes knowledge and expertise. There are definitely things you can (and should) do for maintenance at home, but ask for a little guidance because doing the wrong things can cause redness, irritation, or worse ... scarring. 2. Eat Super Foods. All skin types- oily, dry, normal or a combo— crave water and oil. Yes, healthy fats are essential for glowing skin. Avocado, almonds and oily fish are a great place to start. Snack on naturally hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumber. 3. Avoid foods that are known to cause irritation or allergies. Dairy has been shown to cause tummy issues and breakouts as well. Spicy foods can turn skin that tends to be red into a blotchy mess that can take weeks to calm. 4. Start taking baths. Most brides forget about taking baths vs showers. Add a bath to your weekly routine and throw in bath salts with sodium bicarbonate. This will break down dry, dead skin and leave your skin glowing and supple. 5. Wear SPF on your lips too! It's easier to prevent your lips from getting chapped than it is to repair them if they're already dry and cracked from too much sun and wind or from sitting in a dry, climate-controlled office 16  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

all day. Make sure you exfoliate at least once a week. You can mix raw coco butter with a little sugar to form a paste and gently scrub away dead, flaky skin. Follow up with a natural lip balm and you’ll have supple lips all year long. 6. Use product… Peels, microdermabrasion and melanin restricting home products to help greatly reduce or eliminate sun damaged spots on your face, neck, chest, arms and hands. Peels are designed to slough off dead skin and bring new, fresh skin to the surface. To make the most of these treatments, you need to book a series of peels at least six months in advance. 7. Ladies – no tan lines please. Tan lines do not photograph well, and they are a nightmare for your makeup artist to cover. Enough said. 8. Try out specialized services months in advance. Lash extensions? 3 months in advance. Dermal filler? 6 months in advance. Botox or other neuro toxins? 3 to 9 months in advance so those expression lines have time to soften. 9. Keep your hands away from your skin and don’t pick. Most people pick. I see it every day. I get at least one phone call a week from someone going into compulsive pick mode and now their skin is a wreak. Please leave it to us...we will help you and won’t cause scars in the process. 10. Find a professional that listens to your wants and needs. We are out here and truly wanting to help you achieve your best skin ever! saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Floral Trends FROM JOANN, ADIRONDACK FLOWER

F

lower trends continually evolve from one year to another, and what I’m seeing now is… Naturals!

FOR YOUR BOUQUETS: Grasses, vines & ferns being incorporated with your favorite flowers, such as garden roses, dahlias astilbe and scabiosa, berried ivy and amaryllis. Great combo – and always on point! Designs with the look of cascading greenery and vines are far more in flavor than a symmetrical round bouquet.

FOR YOUR VENUE: Flowing greenery, and candles – lots of candles – is a look that is transforming spaces with a natural wholesome feel, making any venue more intimate & romantic. Hanging “focal pieces” are extremely popular… from chandeliers to wagon wheels! Hanging flowers are very much on trend along with garlands. Garlands are wonderful for any event - from mantles and railings to table runners… garlands are very popular!

he venue is gorgeous and the flowers are delightful, but weddings are about more than what you see. Friends and family watch as artist Gretchen Louise Tisch paints the special beauty and the feeling of this momentous day - live. BRIMMING WITH LOVE AND FUN Like other guests, the romance has Tisch teary-eyed. She joyfully dances while she paints, playfully entertaining the children when they run up to her easel. 18  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

As the celebration progresses, the excitement and suspense for the final reveal builds. “They’re really wanting to see how I feel about what they’re exuding,” said Tisch. Finally, there is the sensational moment when the bride and groom finally see their finished painting. “Their faces are awesome! You can see their bond deepening over my painting,” she said.

“I like when people want to watch me,” she said. Tisch is a bit of a performer and has become accustomed to working in front of a live audience through her experience painting at Feathered Antler, her Broadway art studio boutique, and at the Spa City and Saratoga Farmers’ Markets. PAINTING THE POSSIBILITIES Painting memories from photographs on canvas, prints, note cards, custom painted

apparel, wedding signage and table décor spread Tisch’s special blend of bright colors beyond the canvas - creating a cohesive theme, and a world of possibilities for your big day. For more information, stop by Feathered Antler, 517 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, find Feathered Antler on Instagram, or visit FeatheredAntler.com

THE BEAUTY OF A PAINTING Your wedding day feels like a dream, and live wedding paintings express that in a unique way. Photographers and videographers can only capture what is in front of their lens, but paintings can incorporate the imagination.

group

“I’m not trying to make it look like a photo. It’s not a perfectly realistic capturing. I can incorporate the parts that are special to them with movement, emotion, and color,” said Tisch. She’s painted a couple exchanging their vows in front of a climbing flower garden when in reality there was just a white wall. She’s created a complete scene from a collage of the couple’s favorite elements to give them a truly touching piece to cherish long into the future. “That’s the beauty of a painting,” she said.

patio

WITNESSING THE WONDER During the initial consultation, you’ll discuss what you’d like Tisch to include: the people, background, and which moment – walking down the aisle, the first kiss, first dance or another that you’d like her to paint. She’ll arrive to your venue approximately two hours before the ceremony to set-up and begin painting. Guests are intrigued by the novelty of watching the painting develop before their eyes and Tisch herself, who shines in a live setting

HOW TO NAIL

A Themed Wedding I met Stu

like so many other people meet, through a shared group of friends. The only difference in our case was that our shared group of friends was spread across the country and I had never met any of them face to face. In a world of online dating and apps to meet the right partner, we took it a step further and met in a video game.

Like many people do, we spent time as friends within the group, then moved on to being friends outside the group. In the online game we played together, two people could marry their avatars (the characters people play as) and after a while we decided to do just that. And so, with a small, virtual marriage, we started on our path to the real thing. Over the next few years I would make the trip to Chicago to spend a week with him, and he would fly to Albany to do the same. After a year and a half, he decided to make the move to Albany.

In keeping with the rest of our lives, our wedding was a celebration of everything nerdy. Our tables were named after houses in Game of Thrones. We had swords, and cloaks, and crowns. The words we spoke to each other when we were married were pulled straight out of fantasy. It was a day that was uniquely us and we know our family and friends loved it every bit as much as we did!

My Daughter’s Wedding NOTES ON “THE MORNING OF… ” WRITTEN BY MAUREEN WERTHER PHOTOS COURTESY OF UNIQUE LAPIN PHOTOGRAPHY

O

n Saturday, April 27, 2019, my only daughter, my baby girl, Colleen, married the most wonderful man I could ever have hoped for her to meet and fall in love with. On that day, I had the pure pleasure and honor to be Mother of the Bride for the first – and last – time in my life to the most beautiful, intelligent, caring daughter any mom could ever ask for. Less than a year before, Matt had asked Colleen to be his wife during an impossibly magical trip to Lake Como. They were engaged at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, a 16th century Baroque chateau that can only be described as “fairytale.” Of course, the next 8 ½ months of wedding preparation often descended from the lofty splendor of Lake Como to a more frenetic pace. After a lot of careful investigating, visiting wedding venues from Bolton Landing to Montauk, the couple – who live in the West Village – opted to tie the knot in Manhattan, at the New York Athletic Club, an iconic Manhattan landmark known familiarly as the NYAC. While the destination was most convenient for the largest number of family and friends attending the nuptials, it meant that “MOB,” as my position is referred to in wedding jargon, would have limited ability to help my daughter prepare for the big day because I live three hours away in Ballston Spa. While I did my best to help from a distance, it mostly came in the form of moral and emotional support, as Colleen almost singlehandedly put together a wedding for the record books – not a surprise to me. From the time she could walk, Colleen knew intuitively how to take charge, absorb information and formulate winning strategies and plans. Her diligence and determination to be the best she can be has taken her from a successful career in academics, athletics and dance to a burgeoning professional career. I knew she would tackle her wedding plans with the same attention to detail as she’s approached all challenges and responsibilities in her young life. From the church to the music, the venue, the food and the photographer, every detail was meticulously planned, with little left to chance… except the weather and fate. Before we knew it, the wedding day was upon us. That morning, the bridesmaids, maid of honor, myself, my sister and Colleen’s future mother-in-law all gathered in a large room on the 9th floor of the NYAC, to submit to the female ritual of readying ourselves for the ceremony ahead. While all of us had, at one time or another during the preceding eight months, experienced varying levels of stress and pre-wedding nerves, on that particular Saturday morning, there was a calm, a peace and a serenity that was both unexpected and abundantly welcome. For the next four hours, we had our hair done and makeup applied as we nibbled on breakfast, sipped on champagne and mimosas, and shared stories of Colleen and Matt and our hopes for their future together.

FALL/WINTER 2019 | SARATOGA BRIDE |  23

During those few hours, we fulfilled the age-old tradition of women gathering together to nurture, support, pass on family histories, reminisce about those who were no longer with us, and create bonds with others from different generations, different geographic locations and lifestyles, but who were all connected by their shared love of Colleen and Matt.

her own wedding. Having it there with us only heightened the feeling of ease and calm in the room. I felt my mother with us that morning. I knew how thrilled she would have been to see how her first granddaughter had grown into the beautiful, accomplished and loving woman she is now.

My stepdaughter and Colleen’s sister, Kim, was maid of honor, a role she took seriously and fulfilled with love and a quiet pride for the baby sister she was so thrilled to welcome into the world 29 years earlier. She was a rock that morning and for the rest of the day and evening, infusing her tasks with quiet joy, pride and bursting filial love for her baby sister.

While there were so many remarkable moments from the wedding day and the celebration that ran late into the night, that quiet time in the morning spent with my daughter, our family and friends, is one of the moments I will cherish most from that day. It was transformational in so many ways. It is so much more than a group of women in slippers and robes with curlers in their hair and a mimosa in their hands. It is a time for women to share in the ritual of preparing for that next, most important step in a young woman’s and a young man’s life.

Colleen’s mother-in-law, Lori, had already become a dear friend. The stereotype of the in-laws who can’t stand each other was just that. For me, meeting Lori for the first time over the telephone was like coming back to an old friend. We hit it off instantly and quickly became good friends. Having her there to share that special morning together was truly a blessing. This wedding was a first for us both and we swapped stories about our kids, the loves of our lives. We talked excitedly about things we would do together as a newly blended family, enjoying the prospect of someday being grandmothers together and joking about sharing time with grandkids. Colleen had also invited her aunt, my older sister, Helen, to be there that morning. Our mom, Colleen’s grandma, had passed away 18 years before, when Colleen was a young child. For my sister, myself and Colleen, it was a morning to reflect upon a woman who had exerted such a strong influence on all our lives. I had given Colleen the mother of pearl prayer book my mother carried for 24  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

That morning was a priceless gift that my daughter gave to me on her special day. And my advice to all future MOBs in waiting is this: use that special time of preparation, before the wedding begins and all the craziness descends, to be in the moment with your own beautiful daughter. Celebrate the woman she has become. Remember those other women who have impacted your lives and the lives of your daughters. And capture the true joy and meaning of the day ahead. It’s not the church, the dress, the food, the music that matter. It’s the grace you see on your daughter’s face and the happiness you feel seeing the remarkable woman she has become. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

WRITTEN BY ANNE GORDON OF LIVE LIFE TRAVEL PHOTO PROVIDED

Ed and Chris Galka

met in 10th grade homeroom. Being seated alphabetically, he sat behind her. In 1962 they went their separate ways for college, the service and other life lessons. After reuniting on October 4, 1968, they became engaged on Thanksgiving of that year. And married the following Spring… April 26, 1969 Now - 50 years later - they revisited their honeymoon destination for their 50th Anniversary! Travel Agent Anne Gordon asks them about their trip…

Q. So, what was your first impression being back on

Bermuda’s Elbow Beach, for the first time in 50 years?

A. The Hotel (same as the honeymoon) has an

updated entrance and more cottages. There are now restaurants, all along the beach, with breathtaking beach views!!!

Q. What was the biggest surprise? A. Being greeted by Randy and his team - midday on

Easter Sunday - with an enthusiastic welcome and a pitcher of Rum Swizzles! (A favorite drink from 50 years ago!!) There was even a Welcome Poster at the front desk -with pictures from our wedding and honeymoon! And then when they brought us to our luxurious

26  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

and spacious beachfront suite (an upgrade thanks to Anne!), we were surprised to find they had even more wedding and honeymoon pictures framed and displayed throughout the suite. The amenities were amazing – from the photos to the Prosecco (on ice!) to the Happy Anniversary cake, it made us feel like royalty from the very start of our stay.

Q. Has Elbow Beach changed over the past 50 years? A. The island looked the same, but the traffic is definitely

worse, and the city of Hamilton is much more developed. One thing that has not changed over the years is that the people of Bermuda are just as friendly, kind and hospitable as they were 50 years ago!

Q. Were the Rum Swizzles as good as you remember? A. Yes, however the volume consumed was much less this time!

Q. What was your highlight of the trip? A. Celebrating the occasion with our family and close friends in such a beautiful resort was fantastic. From the amazing welcome and hospitality we felt from the entire staff at Elbow Beach during our stay, to the incredible dinner celebration at the Blu Bar and Grill on the evening of our 50th Anniversary and last night on the island, we had the trip of a lifetime!

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Q. Who went on this dream trip with you? A. Our daughter Jeanne, her husband Dino, and our granddaughter Lora planned the trip (with Anne’s help) and traveled with us to Bermuda for the occasion. We were also fortunate to have our dear friends Rich and Jill Mack join us for the week. Our friendship goes back to 1969 when they were our neighbors in Parkwood Village and we became very close friends. After they moved to Wilmington, NC in the late 1970s we stayed in touch and would vacation together, at first with all our children and then just the four of us. We planned a cruise to Bermuda together for a joint 40th Anniversary celebration but had to cancel last minute due to family illness, so when they heard we were traveling to Bermuda in April they asked if they could join us. It was an amazing week reminiscing, laughing and making new memories.

Q. Any unexpected surprises? A. Absolutely! The incredible suite

with the gorgeous view, the welcome reception and notes from the Elbow Beach staff, the gifts sent by friends to the resort, anniversary cakes brought to us on our first night and again at Blu!

Q. Would you recommend this destination for others? A. Yes! We could have spent the entire

week on property at Elbow Beach and felt fulfilled. Every day started with a delicious breakfast with a beautiful view served by an incredible wait staff. Mickey's restaurant, which is right on the beach was our favorite spot for lunch and dinner and the atmosphere at night under the stars is very romantic. Where we were located, we could easily walk to the Lido complex which is where you find all the restaurants. The beach is gorgeous, and the water is an amazing aqua blue and crystal clear. Randy (Wilcott, Vice President of Sales and Marketing) made us feel so welcome. He met with us on several occasions, called to see how we were enjoying our stay and I'm guessing he made sure we were treated extra special at the “Blu Bar & Grill” where we had dinner on our actual Anniversary. They seated us at the best table overlooking the water!

Nick and I

went on our first date on October 4th, 2011 in New York City, but we quickly realized we had been leading parallel lives for years prior. We hung out at all the same places and can both recall being in the same place for a specific event or happening - multiple times. However, it took us meeting online to actually go out on a date. We hit it off right away and neither of us went back online after our first date. Nick works in IT and I produce TV commercials. We both have hectic schedules at times, but always managed to make time for each other. Being a Skidmore alum. I had a long-standing tradition of spending New Year’s Eve in Saratoga with my close friends from college. We would come in from whichever cities we were living in at the time to congregate at our favorite watering hole, Desperate Annie’s, and ring in the New Year together. Nick had only been to Saratoga to see concerts at SPAC but wanting to spend our first NYE together he came along to join in the tradition. That was the first time we said I love you. That next September we moved in together. Our trips to Saratoga for NYE continued, plus we started making more trips for the track in the summer and foliage in the fall. On one such trip, October 1st, 2017 - six years after meeting - Nick planned an extra stop in Lake Placid. He proposed on top of Whiteface Mountain (after we both discovered I am afraid of heights – who knew!). We joke to this day that I only said yes so, he would bring me back down the mountain. Our favorite hockey team, the NY Rangers was in Lake Placid that weekend and were staying at our hotel. We saw it as a good omen as we are both diehard Rangers fans! saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

I grew up in New York City and Nick grew up in Marcellus NY. To us Saratoga has always felt like a blend of where we both come from, probably why we enjoy spending time there so much. After visiting venues in NYC and the Syracuse/Finger Lakes area we decided to get married in Saratoga… the place we had shared so many good times in, together. Not only is it about midway between both of our hometowns but also, it is such a special place to us and we wanted to share it with those we care about most. When we saw the space at Saratoga Polo Association, we knew we had found our venue. It is such a beautiful and unique location and it allowed us to have both indoor and outdoor components to our reception which was important to us. They were fantastic and so accommodating, they made it easy for us to customize our day, to feel personal and not just like another cookie cutter event. All our vendors were spectacular and worked so closely with us to make our day perfect! We could not have been in better hands and we can’t thank them all enough for making our wedding truly special and amazing. The whole wedding weekend was magical. We felt so lucky to have family and friends come from all over to celebrate with us. People came from New York City, New Jersey, Syracuse, Boston, California, Washington DC and even Italy. We wanted some place that was easy for everyone to get to but also a fun destination. We got married on the Saturday before Columbus Day so our guests could make a mini vacation out of the trip if they wanted to. Having everyone come together in Saratoga for us was so touching and meaningful. We felt so fortunate to have so much love around us as we started our lives together as husband and wife.

Attending a small school in Boston, both as science majors, it was no surprise that their paths crossed. James and Logan slowly started spending more time together studying for classes and getting their daily coffee fix. After many casual ‘dates,’ James asked Logan on their first official date to his favorite place in the city, the Boston Public Library. That stroll through the Public Library turned into a few moves, the addition of a yellow lab puppy, Bode, and growing together. Six years after that first date, they were packing up for their 3rd annual Labor Day celebration in Saratoga with family and friends, when James hooked a ring onto Bode’s leash and convinced Logan to take a walk with him before hopping in the car. Although they never left Boston after graduating, Saratoga always held a special place in their hearts. They thought choosing a venue in Saratoga would be a bit more difficult, until they met Danielle and the team at Saratoga National. The planning began for October 19, 2018. 10.19.18 was the perfect theme of rustic elegance; they were able to tie in family heirlooms and special touches that made the day feel personal. Logan and James are so grateful to their vendors, family and friends that traveled near and far to celebrate their special day.

Alex and I

met in 2011 at college in upstate NY during an informational meeting about a volunteer trip to New Orleans, LA. The goal of the trip would be to provide disaster relief in the Greater New Orleans area following Hurricane Katrina. This would be my second time making the trip, and I couldn’t wait to get back. Alex decided the trip was for him, the second he realized it conveniently fell during peak Mardi Gras season. Several weeks after that initial meeting, we got to know each other during a LONG 24-hour drive from Oneonta, NY to New Orleans, LA.

feeling peacefully at home every single time we exit the Northway and see the first sign directing us North to Saratoga. Thankfully, Alex was absolutely astonished at the grandiose beauty of the Hall of Springs when I first brought him to look at it. We got married on October 19th on a perfect, 65-degree fall evening under the beautifully lit portico. 9 months after our perfect day, our out-of-towner Long Islanders are still ranting and raving about our stunning wedding and Saratoga’s overall quaint perfectness.

7 years, several jobs, 2 apartments, many traffic-filled drives upstate to Saratoga, lots of laughs, (and a few tears) from that 24-hour car ride led us to an ordinary June morning in 2017. One of our favorite activities to do is walk the beach to Fire Island-- we are so blessed to live just 5 miles away from the Ocean. That morning, I had unknowingly squashed Alex’s grand beach proposal by quickly shutting down his idea, (I was a bit hungover from a wedding the night before). Alex quickly moved on from the subject so as not to alert me to any suspicion. I am impossible to surprise! Instead, we went for a walk into town for lunch. The streets were closed to traffic for a charming street fair with music, food, etc. We settled into the window seat of our favorite wine bar looking out onto the fair when I nonchalantly said, “I really want a small diamond necklace that I can wear everyday.” I turned around and Alex was beside me on one knee. He said, “how about a diamond ring instead!?” Shortly after my immediate, (and teary eyed) “YES!” some of our closest friends and family came to celebrate with us while the bartender popped open a bottle of champagne. I will never forget the 3 women eating lunch next to us who were crying happy tears at our surprise engagement. We still joke about my unintentional proposal set-up. I was born and raised in Saratoga but moved to Long Island just 6 months after my college graduation to be with Alex. I, (and we) had never even considered getting married anywhere other than my hometown of Saratoga Springs. Saratoga has always had my whole heart and quickly earned top rankings as one of my husband’s favorite places as well. I still can’t help

After the wedding and fellowship graduation, I accepted a job at Albany Medical Center and we built our dream home near Albany. We now live there with our kitty, and we just got a new puppy!

While planning for the wedding, we knew how incredible the Hall of Springs was because I had many school events there during medical school. Chris even went to a prom there. We knew immediately that is where we wanted to get married. We both love Saratoga, especially in the Spring and Summer months. All of our vendors and the entire Hall of Springs staff were absolutely incredible!

He proposed to me in the Summer of 2016. He surprised me with a visit to New York City and we visited my brother and brother-in-law at their apartment. When we arrived to the rooftop of their high rise apartment building, a string trio was waiting for us and playing "All of Me" by John Legend. He got down on one knee and proposed in front of my best friends (who he flew in from Michigan to be there for the day).

hris and I met at Lionheart Pub in Albany through mutual friends. I had been a medical student at Albany Medical College, and after graduation, I moved to Long Island to complete my residency. Chris was born and raised in Albany. He contacted me a few years after we met, while I was a busy intern working through residency. I tried to explain to him that a relationship would be too difficult due to the long distance between Albany and Long Island. However, he was persistent and he was always confident that I was the only one for him. He started visiting me during the weekends and after that, we spent almost every day together since. Chris moved to Long Island for me and we lived in a small apartment together until I finished my residency and fellowship.

We also had a painter (Feathered Antler-Gretchen Tisch) on site to live paint our first dance. Gretchen was with us from the start of the ceremony through part of the reception painting, and our guests loved going up to see her progress throughout the evening. It was such a beautiful detail that complemented our wedding and we now have a keepsake to remind us of our favorite day. We then decided to use the painting as our thank you card picture so that our guests could see the finished artwork! ADVICE TO PASS ALONG... Our wedding vision was to have a winter wedding, and we were able to execute it so beautifully by playing up the colors that embraced the winter season rather than a holiday themed wedding. It's important to find vendors that you enjoy being around and feel you can be honest with because you will spend more time with them on the day of your wedding than your family and friends. Most importantly, have an honest financial conversation with those helping to contribute early on so that there are no surprises and decisions are made easily and with eyes wide open.

"It all started at the printer.. "

is typically how we both jokingly talk about how we met. In the summer of 2011, I started working at my first job out of college. On one occasion, I had to visit the printer to retrieve some work-related materials I had completed. When I got to the printer, I realized that it wasn't working, but it just so happened that sitting next to that printer was a handsome engineer who offered to help. That engineer's name was David. After that day in July, we quickly became inseparable. Over the next seven years, our weekend trips and vacations focused on exploring the local and global food scenes along with trips to Spain, Italy, France, London, and Ireland. Our joint passion for fitness has also led to our love for triathlons and early morning CrossFit classes. During the summer of 2017, David found time to plan the perfect engagement on the edge of the Hudson River in Hoboken, NJ, overlooking Manhattan. Even though we live in New Jersey, we fell in love with Saratoga. Being from the Capital District, Saratoga was always a perfect summer destination when we visited home to catch the races or find new and interesting restaurants to enlighten our palates. David grew to love Saratoga as well. After an action-packed weekend during the fall of 2017 visiting many venues throughout the Capital Region and beyond, both of us fell in love with the charm of the Canfeld Casino. Its history, charm, and personality were exactly what we wanted to celebrate our big day. Our wedding weekend could not have been more magical. All of our vendors were exceptional and helped to make our wedding perfect in every way. Looking back on the whole experience and our beautiful wedding, we honestly wouldn’t have changed a single thing!

Mike also surprised me with a horse and carriage ride through the park after the ceremony at sunset *** Both our Mothers wore pant suits and it was more modern and fun! ADVICE TO PASS ALONG... Take a moment to take it all in. Your wedding day goes by so fast. Just take a moment to step off the dance floor with your new husband or wife. Look at all the wonderful friends and family that have come to celebrate you, how fortunate you are to have such as special day and remember all the years you have together. You will never forget those ten seconds you two chose step back and take it all in.

Mike and I

met my freshman year of college at Hartwick in Oneonta. I was the new nerdy girl from Saratoga, and he was a loud Junior from Long Island - not to mention he was also Captain of the Lacrosse Team which made his demeanor even louder than normal. Mike joined Model United Nations Club to meet me after his friend told him two cute girls joined and his friend needed a wingman. I never gave Mike the time of day, we were partners on several class projects, both members of Model UN and occasionally frequented the same house parties. It wasn't until Mike had graduated and came back for Alumni weekend that we connected. We exchanged numbers and a few months later he asked me to the Holiday Lacrosse Cocktail. I obliged and he ended up being an amazing date. I was hooked. After that, we talked on and off for a few months but nothing serious. Mike was joining the Navy and I moved to DC to pursue Grad School. It all took a turn when he invited to me to his going away party on Long Island where at 3AM, the morning he was about to embark on the biggest journey of his life, he put his head against mine and asked me “on a scale of the planets – how much do you like me?” I asked, “Which one is the biggest” he said, “Jupiter and then Saturn” I said, “Somewhere between that.” That moment is when I knew I had met my forever person. A year or so goes by and Mike ended up stationed in Norfolk VA – conveniently 2 hours and 55 minutes from my townhouse in Georgetown. We started our official long-distance relationship from DC to Norfolk where I eventually moved in with him. A year later we were engaged and a year after that we were married! Our wedding was the most amazing day of our lives. It went off without a hitch and I have Fine Affairs, Dave Bigler and my makeup and hair artist to thank. These people are truly talented, I cannot thank them enough. Now… I’d like to tell you how he proposed! Michael had just come home from his first deployment. We had just

bought a boat. We spent our days sailing the sea and nights riding our bikes to Ghent for questionable Mexican food. We were happy and content and had not had a serious conversation about marriage in a while. However, I had presented the perfect opportunity for Michael to make the "big" move. We were on our way to a trip-of-a-lifetime from D.C. to Florence, Italy, to Munich, Germany and on to Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He had the back drop, the romance and we were surrounded by loved ones throughout our trip. At every “perfect moment” I held my breath for him to drop to one knee. Well, two weeks flew by and the time had passed. No ring and no big moment, just our lovely memories of our European Adventure. After we began our first house hunt later that month, I figured we wouldn't get engaged for a long time... A few weeks later we headed to my home in Maine to see my parents for Thanksgiving. Awoken on Thanksgiving morning by the bright morning sun beaming though my bedroom across an open hay field, we decided to take a morning walk through the woods to the "secret" field. Anyone who has been to Maine with me, knows my favorite spot is an open field full of wild flowers in the middle of a wooded area. Before you think this was a purely romantic moment, I would like to remind everyone that its hunting season in Maine. Being so, my Mother insisted that we wear full hunting gear if we were to walk in the woods Thanksgiving morning. Thinking nothing of it, I laughed and put on my Patriots hat, oversized neon orange vest and a pair of torn up Ugg boots. I fitted Michael in the largest camo orange jacket we had, and we were on our way. We made our way down the path, across the field, through the woods and on to the secret field. Michael begged to take a picture of us and I refused considering my lack luster outfit. He told me to turn around and he would take a picture of me staring out into the field. Grumpy as could be, I turned around and stood there until Michael said my name. I turned around and there he was, on one knee, asking if I would spend the rest of my life with him as his wife. I said Yes. He truly surprised me. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Josh’s Bubbie and Zayde, Yiddish for grandparents, married in Israel after being released from captivity in Eastern Europe at the end of the second world war. Ten years later they began their life in the NYC boroughs, ultimately settling in Brooklyn and giving Josh’s father Jack the opportunity to find Janice, who agreed to go out with “the plumber.”

I

n the summer of 2015, Josh had just walked out of his dental residency, eager to get out and help new patients in practice. He was also ready to find his life sidekick. The tinder search -narrowed to less than a one mile away radius, and there he found Erin, a whopping ten city blocks north of where he’d been living the last few years. They met over a cocktail at the Writing Room, former hot spot “Elaine’s,” exactly five blocks from each other’s apartment. It was slow to start, and probably a bit on the quiet side, as Josh tends to be at first, but it was comfortable, funny and interesting. They continued to speak and go on fun dates in Central Park, feeding each other food they had prepared and attending live music concerts. There were many unknown connections between them via family and friends that came to light time and time again as they got to know each other better. Josh had officially received his NYS dental license within a week of meeting Erin and has had her by his side as a young associate working six days a week his first year in practice. He learned a lot from working with his uncle, Abe Bronner, an experienced and 48  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

successful dentist, but followed leads to other dental opportunities outside of south Brooklyn. Over the next year he treated patients at offices in Huntington and Massapequa. A “small-world” type of opportunity was stumbled upon last summer and the couple decided to pack up and head north after getting engaged, to Saratoga Springs, NY, where they currently reside. Josh has been practicing dentistry locally in Saratoga since moving to the area early in the fall. Erin, having over ten years’ experience in property management in Manhattan, has begun to expand further into the real estate world and recently obtained her NYS real estate license. Erin, born and raised in Melville on the North Shore of Long Island, was living on the Upper East Side of Manhattan working for a property management firm. She became fast friends with a wonderful group of professional women, all single and in their 20s. The girls would often get together for dinner and drinks to catch up, talk about their jobs, organize summer trips to Montauk and bond over their recent dating experiences, sometimes juicy, other times disheartening but most of the time extremely comical. The women would give each other advice, encourage one another to stay positive and to never stop believing that “the one” was out there, despite the very challenging New York City dating scene. Their get together often felt like they were out of an episode of “Sex and the City.” The girls all unanimously agreed that their parents had a much easier time when they were single - 30 plus years ago. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Erin’s father, Dennis Keith Linde, of Canarsie Brooklyn, and his mother Maxine E. Friedman, of Bayside Queens, met on a blind date at 17 years of age and got married a few years later at age 21. A few years after their June 1975 wedding at Fresh Meadows Synagogue (Fresh Meadows, Queens), the couple purchased a very pretty and spacious colonial in the town of Melville on Long Island and had three beautiful children by age 30. Dennis owned an Auto Parts business and Maxine was an elementary school teacher (currently retired). Erin, continuously encouraged by her friends, did not give up. She started chatting with Josh on “Tinder,” the dating app, which people would often label as the place to go for quick flings. Based on Josh’s online dating profile, he was attractive with a full head of dark hair, from the South Shore of Long Island, Jewish and a dentist. (in other words, every Jewish mother’s dream candidate for their single daughter!)

The happiness and excitement of the beautiful engagement has been bittersweet for the couple… Erin lost her father, Dennis Linde, to pancreatic cancer a little less than 9 years ago. Josh never had the opportunity to meet Dennis, who Erin knows would have absolutely loved Josh and would have been honored to call him his son-in-law (and vice versa). Josh would have absolutely loved Dennis and be thrilled to have him as his father-in-law. Dennis was a passionate, loving, funny, sensitive, caring man. He had a very special energy that his family and friends miss immensely. Erin knows that though her father won’t be there in body to walk her down the aisle, he will be there in spirit and his love and energy will surround her and his family on this very special milestone.

"

Erin and Josh met on July 24TH 2015 for a casual drink on the upper east side. One drink date turned into a second dinner date to a third date walking around the reservoir in Central Park to a fourth date attending an outside concert to beach dates to summer bike rides with ices…barbeques with friends to family dinners and holidays spent together… Fast forward to August 3rd 2018, when Josh surprised Erin with a gorgeous diamond ring on the boardwalk overlooking the ocean in Long Beach, NY. The couple both feel very lucky and blessed to have met each other and know the future is bright! Both Erin and Josh are kind, sensitive, passionate individuals who truly love and care for one another, their friends and family. They encourage one another and are focused on continuous growth in their careers and personal lives.

Erin and Josh are excited to build a beautiful life together in their new and very special surroundings that they now call home!

"

Shortly before getting engaged, Josh was presented with a wonderful opportunity in Saratoga Springs, NY and the couple decided to move 3.5 hours north to start their new and very exciting adventure together! The couple just married on June 15th at Temple Avodah in Oceanside, New York. They have been living in downtown Saratoga Springs for a little less than a year and have fallen in love with the town, the vibe, the people and culture. Erin and Josh both love to attend live concerts, enjoy beautiful scenic hikes, admire sunsets regularly, observe the beauty of nature and try new restaurants. The couple also enjoys jogging outside together while exploring and admiring the history and architecture of their new neighborhood. Erin and Josh are excited to build a beautiful life together in their new and very special surroundings that they now call home! They truly feel blessed to have found one another, to be starting a new journey together as husband and wife and to call Saratoga Springs their new home! saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

NOW THAT

You're Engaged

M

any couples get engaged between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. And what better time of year to schedule a Winter Engagement Photo Session? Here in the Adirondacks we have so many unique places for romantic photo opportunities! With a little planning you can totally rock your session. LOCATIONS: There are loads of Winter locations for outdoor shoots. However, you want to make sure that you have proper permission to use them. Call well ahead of time to see if you need to schedule a certain time and whether or not there is a usage fee. BUNDLE UP: It can get pretty cold outdoors in the Winter in Upstate NY, so plan on bringing items to help you stay warm. Frostbite is never a good look. I recommend warm boots, a fur jacket or coat (faux or real), and possibly some thermal underwear or fleece lined

tights depending on where we will be. A good pair of gloves or mittens are essential. Even if we do not use the coats and gloves in the actual photos, you should have something to keep warm if you need a break. A wool blanket with a colorful pattern can be an interesting prop as well. HYDRATE AND MOISTURIZE: The Winter can be pretty challenging for all of us with dry skin. Make sure you are drinking lots of water prior to the day of the shoot as well as moisturizing your skin a lot. Professional Hair and Makeup can be a great way to trial your look for the Big Day. TIMING IS EVERYTHING: Don’t forget that the days are shorter in Winter, so plan your session accordingly. And don’t be late showing up—you will lose precious minutes of daylight. Using these four simple suggestions will help to make your Winter Engagement Session Stress free and fun.

WEDDING TRENDS FOR 2020 WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY SUSAN BLACKBURN PHOTOGRAPHY

CLASSIC 52  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | FALL/WINTER 2019

O

VERALL STYLE: While the Minimalist look of clean lines and one or two colors will remain popular, another trend will be textures and an overgrown garden look. This will be especially prevalent in ceremony arches/arbors and table décor. WEDDING ATTIRE: For bridal gowns, we are seeing beautiful trains and/or sleeves with gorgeous lace detailing, the return of the Cinderella style ballgown, as well as a continuation of the simple and elegant Meghan Markel trend. Veils are still an important part of the bridal ensemble, whether cathedral length or shorter—think details like lace and/or beading. Hair jewelry and accessories remain popular in 2020. Vibrant colors, flirty fashions and mixed textures will come into vogue for bridesmaids. Grooms will even have some colorful options. ENGAGEMENT AND WEDDING RINGS: Vintage style with a little bit of a modern twist, rose gold will continue to be popular, and a classic diamond solitaire never goes out of style. UNIQUE LIGHTING: Small twinkle string lights are passé—think more unique lighting for reception spaces. Paper lanterns or elegant chandeliers will be dressing up wedding venues moving forward.

FALL/WINTER 2019 | SARATOGA BRIDE |  53

WEARABLE FLOWERS: Think hair accessories, wraps, bracelet cuffs, even darling rings made with flowers. RETURN TO CLASSIC: The rustic look has been popular the last few years, so now we are seeing a return to the classic, elegant dinner party—not that it was ever really out of style. Beautiful linens, china and crystal will feature in this look. VELVET: The texture of velvet is very sumptuous and luxe. Whether it is bridesmaids’ gowns, dinner jackets for grooms, bespoke shoes for the bride, or even table linen options, velvet will be everywhere. INVITATIONS: More texture and unique paper options will be featured in wedding invitations with vellum becoming more important.

IN THE NORTHERN CATSKILLS

P

robably the most elegant animals on earth - and certainly among the most intelligent and loyal - horses have long been an integral part of Saratoga, and not just at the track! So, it’s no surprise that couples who love their noble steeds want their most important friends to be part of their big day.

What may be a surprise, however, is that those couples don’t need to sacrifice a single ounce of chic to have the barn wedding of their dreams!

Over the past 10 years we have seen barn weddings evolve from rustic ceremonies on family farms that had been recently cleared of tractors and hay to full-scale event venues like the Sablewood at Highview Springs, where the live-edge bar tops gleam with polish, an antique chandelier illuminates your ceremony, and effortlessly elegant black-and-white coloring elevates the setting from barn to an estate.

With this incredible setting in mind, we were inspired to feature wedding gowns in luscious silk organzas and dreamy laces; suits, shirts, ties and pocket squares that wouldn’t be out of place on a yacht or the sidelines of a polo match; and - of course - two gorgeous horses who can’t get enough of their owners!

Lush florals in shades of living coral bring a pop of color to the venue and hanging greens over the tablescape give an intimate feeling to the dinner of sumptuous farm-to-table cuisine. Marbled in black, white and grey with gold leaf, the wedding cake goes from understated chic to statement with the addition of fresh, bright florals. As the finishing touch, elegant linen stationery is stamped with a black wax horseshoe to seal the impression for guests of an upscale and elegant equestrian wedding.

THE ELECTRIC CITY HAS A NEW SPARK. The sensible-yet-daring Daley’s on Yates restaurant in downtown Schenectady is an avant-garde accomplishment that ignites the imagination. BREAKTHROUGH THE BANAL Situated in the metropolitan setting that sparked the creative talents of inventor Thomas Edison to start what would become the General Electric Company, and where George Westinghouse’s engine drove us into the future, Daley’s on Yates is forwardlooking space charged with unconventional charm. “We wanted to steer the wheel away from what everyone else is doing,” said Stephanie Pettit, Marketing and Development Director for the Daley Hospitality Group.

FALL/WINTER 2019 | SARATOGA BRIDE |  65

PROGRESSIVE POSSIBILITIES TThe former site of a taxi cab garage, Daley’s on Yates is like the city itself a juxtaposition of gritty and glam. The 1950s were a period of positivity and possibilities, which is why mid-century modern décor is an ingenious choice to fill the industrial space. “Mid-century is the perfect backdrop to show off the integrity of the unexpected details. It’s that whole era in this raw space. We wanted people to say, ‘Wow! They turned this warehouse into a great, glamorous place’,” said Pettit. Delicious textures and colors, like deep blue velvet booths, black leather chairs, rich red brick walls, and sturdy wood ceiling beams warm the stark concrete architecture of the structure. Statement-making hexagons add a graphic element and a consistent theme on the walls and through to the interesting Italian floor tile. Bare-bulb bubble-light chandeliers leave an indelible impression in the mellow 5,000 sq. ft. dining area that seats 140 people with another 20 seats available at the bar. The glass garage doors open to a private, tree-lined patio, where 60 to 80 additional guests can drink at the outdoor bar, dine under the market umbrellas, or lounge on the four sectional sofas surrounding four blazing fire pits.

HIP FOR HAPPENINGS The triumphant revitalization of the building led to Daley’s on Yates being honored with the Schenectady Heritage Foundation’s award for excellence in historic preservation. This has created the ideal industrial-chic atmosphere for relishing their sophisticated selection of food and drinks. Prepared by veteran chef Zach Simard, the restaurant is open to the public for dinner Wednesday through Saturday and for private events Sunday through Tuesday. “Daley’s on Yates has its own personal flair – unique to its space – and so do the events that take place there. It’s a great place to have a wedding; there’s nothing else like it around here,” said Pettit. With ample parking nearby, custom quotes can be created for a whole host of hip events. A non-wedding event could be booked within a week, while many dates are still open for Sunday weddings, as well. Their basic wedding package includes a premium open bar (and their mixologist’s signature cocktails), an appetizer hour, a robust selection of plated and/or food station and dessert items, a modest cutting cake, and more. ometimes your wedding plans the dress and sometimes your dress plans the wedding... the trick is to decide which one matters more to you! For us, the inspiration for this shoot came first, second, third, and always from the gorgeous Studio Levana gowns that Kaiulani shows to perfection against the backdrop of old-world grandeur in the Batcheller Mansion Inn. Showcasing two completely different silhouettes from Studio Levana’s Curvy Enchanting line, we love how floaty chiffon flirts with showing a little bit of leg or sinuous lace hugs your body in all the right places. But believe it or not, the best part of these gowns isn’t even what you see here on the page. Each Studio Levana gown comes with your foundation garment already built in for a no fuss, no worries wedding day!

We paired these gowns with soft, romantic accessories that elevate the look without competing for attention. And we know what you’re thinking: those are BIG earrings; how can they possibly not compete?! But the delicate porcelain flowers and detail work, on the House of Mac and Zoe earrings, are soft enough to blend seamlessly with the look -while statement enough to stand up to the dress itself and not get lost!

Anthony and I

met in 2006, our senior year of high school. We lived in neighboring towns which meant we went to different high schools. As the end of the school year approached, we were separated once again, attending colleges in different states. We found one another again in 2011. A few years later we decided to get our first apartment in Saratoga. Three years later Anthony proposed on a warm fall day in Congress Park with a photographer on hand to capture the moment. One year later we were married on a beautiful day at Saratoga National Golf Club. It was sunny and warm during the day and a lovely, cool evening dancing in the tent. Our wedding planner, Kelly, made everything we dreamed of, a reality that day. The team of vendors we worked with were wonderful and really created a special day for our family and friends.

Michael

was coming off a long, very difficult marriage and had 2 kids to worry about. Dorene was 49 and never married. Neither thought a happy marriage was in their future. They both accepted invites from friends for a night out thinking nothing of it. What happened next could not have been more shocking and yet magical at the same time. While both Michael and Dorene lived in or around NYC their entire lives, Saratoga is the first place where they had bought a home together. It had become their special place and the place where they wanted to celebrate their future. In typical Dorene fashion, the wedding was perfect, and everyone had a great time. Most importantly, it confirmed what they already knew -- they were going to spend their lives together. Fast forward to today and things could not be better. Dorene, Michael, Alexandra and Andrew (along with Clyde -- their puppy) have created a special family -- known as Squadklar. Everyone could not be happier!

Everything happens for a reason-

a simple saying, but it’s the way our story unfolded…

Stacey and I were both working in different industries, living in different towns, and running in different directions with our children. The only tie was that we both worked in Saratoga Springs and had a common connection - me with a long-time friend and she with his wife, whom she worked with. What started as a quick Friday lunch turned into, "So Diane has someone that she thinks you should meet." Stacey and I started texting late that afternoon. We met and quickly knew we had stumbled upon something truly special. The next couple of months brought introductions to children & families, as well as time spent growing closer together. After the New Year rang in, we were engaged and started planning our new life together with our five children. We began building our dream home, adopted our furry child, and became one family before our family and close friends on October 11th. Life does not always go the way we plan, but everything happens for a reason. We couldn't be happier together. We know that two people together can be far stronger than any could ever be alone. Unbeknownst to the both of us our vows held similar themes of love and admiration, ending with the same quote form one of our favorite artists "should you be the last thing I see, I want you to know it's enough for me, cause all you are, is all I'll ever need.”

Taylor and Dave

met at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. She was an Athletic Training major and he studied Criminal Justice. After graduation, Taylor enrolled in the Physician’s Assistant Program at Albany Medical Center and Dave entered the Police Academy in Plymouth, MA. They always kept in touch and in 2015, after graduating from their programs, they decided to start dating. After 6 months of long-distance dating, Taylor moved to Plymouth. They bought a house and Dave proposed when they moved in. He presented Taylor with her house key and tied to it, was a beautiful engagement ring! They chose to marry in October – Taylor’s favorite month - and set out to make it a memorable day for everyone. The autumnal theme was infused throughout the day. They chose Crooked Lake for their reception venue because of the spectacular lake side views. Each area of the venue was personally decorated by the bride and groom - guest tables, cocktail fireplace room, lobby and entrance. The sun was shining, the air was crisp, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed celebrating their marriage! They are moving into a new home in Latham … and … baby girl McGrath is due to arrive October 27!

C

hris and I met at Lionheart Pub in Albany through mutual friends.

After the wedding and fellowship graduation, I accepted a job at Albany Medical Center and we built our dream home near Albany. We now live there with our kitty, and we just got a new puppy! wedding gown XENA'S

After a friendly conversation

over a few bottles of Maple porters at a birthday party in January of 2015, there was an instant connection between us. A few gatherings later, and three more attempts to go out on a date (Thank God for persistent men), we had our first date at Morgan and Co. in downtown Glens Falls.

We were scheduled for a trip to Italy /Portugal in April of 2017. We visited my family in Marsicovetere, Italy. Scott made several attempts to have some alone time with me (planning to propose), but there is never a quiet moment when socializing with Italians. Finally, as we were leaving Marsicovetere, he popped the question in the backseat of the car. In shock, I didn’t even answer. Immediately after, my cousin pulled the car over (unaware of what just occurred), we jumped out of the car, and wandered over to a nearby garden, in which a small church covered in vines appeared. Finally, alone, Scott knelt on the steps of the church and proposed the way he had planned to for so long. Spoiler alert, I said, “Yes.” We had more fun planning and preparing for the big day than we did stressing about it. Our wedding was on a crisp October day. It was gorgeous, there was a double rainbow and we were surrounded by our closest family and friends at the most beautiful venue. Everyone worked so hard to make our day special, and we are so grateful for the love and time spent on us.

Although we both

attended Lehigh University, Mike and I did not meet until we had both graduated. We happened to join some friends at the same tailgate before a Lehigh-Lafayette football game, and we got to chatting and hit it off. From that point on, we were inseparable even though I was living in Philadelphia, and Mike was living in Maryland. Mike came to visit me a few weekends, and we bonded over our love of good food and being outdoors. We began to spend more and more time together, even though it meant being long distance for several years. In 2015, I accepted a job in Maryland so that we could be closer together. We got engaged in a state park in Maryland in June 2017, and I was so surprised! Upstate New York in the fall is my absolute favorite, and I knew I wanted to get married among the fall foliage. After looking at several venues, we decided on the National Museum of Dance for both our ceremony and reception. We loved the large windows and natural light at the museum, and how it was a unique venue in Saratoga Springs that our out-of-town guests would enjoy visiting. Our wedding day was absolutely perfect! We are so grateful that our friends and family were able to help us celebrate our wedding day. Every single vendor went above and beyond to make our day memorable and stress free, and delivered impeccable service.

Kurt and I met

while we were undergraduates at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We played music together in our college orchestra, and as a result, we met a great group of mutual friends who brought us together. We enjoyed spending time together, talking and playing games after our classes and rehearsals had finished for the day. Aside from a shared appreciation for music performance, we had very different interests, but this is what made us a great team. Our friendship eventually developed into a romantic relationship, and we took turns visiting each other over the summers. In 2016, we moved to Upstate New York together to be close to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where Kurt decided to pursue his graduate course of study. In September 2017, Kurt proposed to me during a weekend getaway to Stowe, Vermont. When we checked into our hotel that afternoon, our room was covered in rose petals, which set the stage for a lovely proposal. We knew that we wanted to get married in Upstate New York, close to our new home. Not long after our engagement, we were on a day cruise on Lake George when we saw the majestic Sagamore Resort from the boat. We exchanged glances and knew that this would be our venue for our October 2018 wedding. Shortly thereafter, we attended a beautiful luncheon at the Sagamore, which further confirmed our decision. With our excellent team of vendors and the Sagamore Resort as an elegant backdrop, our vision for our wedding day became reality. Kurt and I feel so fortunate to have had such an amazing wedding day, and we are looking forward to reliving the memories for years to come.

OFFICIANT Reverend Joy Burke SPECIAL TOUCHES Although it is an honored tradition and an important aspect of the wedding reception for many brides, I opted not to do a bouquet toss, but instead to present the bouquet to my grandmother in honor of her 62 years of marriage. Rather than drawing attention to my friends and family who have not yet had the good fortune to find their partner in life, I wanted to celebrate a lifelong partnership by recognizing my grandparents' marital longevity. ADVICE TO PASS ALONG... Do whatever brings you peace and relaxation the day before your wedding to ensure you wake up feeling re-energized and renewed the next day. Go to bed early, stay hydrated, and eat well. Take a bubble bath, get a massage, or meditate. Read a book or go for a walk. Your wedding day is a marathon event, and your body and mind will thank you if you make taking care of yourself the first priority the day before.

My best friend

had a crush on Curtis in high school. I tried to set them up without success. During class, he could be found most days with his hoodie up and head down trying to take a nap, while I tried to wake him up. She moved on and Curtis and I did not talk until a couple of years later when we were in class together again, my junior year and his senior year at Hudson High School. We started talking one day and there was such a strong connection, we knew we were soulmates! Me, the "class clown", and him the "most nonchalant". Curtis and I knew we would spend our lives together but became so busy, him with work, running a busy merchandising company, and me with years of school and training to become an Osteopathic Medical Physician. Curtis joked in high school he was going to marry a doctor and take it easy. Seems he is still waiting. We had not found time to make it official and years passed with me being very unhealthy due to a cortisol producing adrenal tumor that was undiagnosed for 10 years. I finally healed and we were ready to get married, after being together 27 years. A dear patient pal, Reverend Joy Burke, told me about The Mansion Inn and the all-inclusive midweek packages that sounded perfect for us. Saratoga has always had a special place in our hearts because it is where Curtis' Mom grew up and where we now live. All the best vendors in one location made the planning easy and fun. We loved working with everyone who made our day so special and 2 months later Curtis and I were married with our amazing family and friends present. Curtis surprised me with one of our favorite bands, Chamberlain, who came to play at our cocktail hour. Our wedding day was the best day of our lives!

Food and appetizers had a fall theme. ADVICE TO PASS ALONG... Save the environment by using evites directing guests to theknot.com where you can share your story and wedding details. We found great deals on detail items at the beginning of the season at Target- wooden fall decor (leaves) for place settings, table numbers, and signs. We found inexpensive wooden lanterns from Better Homes and Gardens and large flickering led remote candles from amazon. Relax, have fun, and enjoy your time together!

Marra and Chris

knew from the start of wedding planning, that they wanted to wed in Upstate New York, where the bride, Marra grew up. Over the six years they were together before getting engaged, they look frequent trips to visit Saratoga Springs, New York. The couple wanted a warm and welcoming rustic-chic fall theme. After the original venue fell through four months before their wedding day, they found an even more perfect venue that would be able to feature the vibe they were going for. The wedding was held on October 27, 2018 at the Wedding Barn at Lakota’s Farm in Cambridge, New York. The couple had done the ceremony at a church off site and traveled back to the barn for the reception. When the guests arrived at the barn, they were greeted with mini grilled cheese and tomato soup to warm up a very blustery fall day. Signature drinks were named after Zac Brown Band songs; Sweet Annie and Knee Deep, the couple’s songs. The night ended with fresh apple cider donuts from a local apple orchard Marra and Chris always stop at during the fall season. Guests were able to take some to go with custom bags. A windy, rainy and chilly day on October 27th, 2018 was made warm and beautiful surrounded by the bride and groom’s closest family and friends. The guests did not stop dancing while listening to the live high energy music played by the Silver Arrow Band… perfect!

Our story

began back in ’08. I was introduced to Jesse when I was 17 years old. Even though we had mutual friends all along, we had not been formally introduced until then. The night we met we didn’t talk much, but after a few weeks went by we connected through Facebook. I received a message from him, and we instantly hit it off. It began like many high school flings do, but quickly turned into a real connection. We dated for 8 years before he proposed to me in our home where a path was lit by candles and red rose petals covering the floor. With total excitement I said “YES!” and we couldn’t wait to start the wedding planning. We both knew right away we wanted a venue that had a more rustic feel. The moment we walked through the Old Daley on Crooked Lake we knew this was it! The venue had everything we were looking for. Our wedding day could not have been more beautiful, and we were so thankful to all our vendors that helped make the day what it was. We were both just so appreciative of being able to spend that moment with our family and friends whom we love so much.

Connor and I

met while working in a very stressful Emergency Department in 2015. Initially, we were both shy and didn't say much to each other. Until one night when we happened to run into each other while out in Saratoga, I struck up a conversation. I told my best friend that he was the man I had a crush on at work. That night we spent hours talking, laughing, and / dancing together. After that night, we talked every day, were inseparable and knew we were meant to be together. Our relationship grew, and we adopted a Cat, named Chance, and a Golden Retriever puppy named Louie. In November of 2017, Connor planned a trip to Italy for us, as we both have a love for the Italian language and culture. He proposed to me on a hilltop outside of St. Peter's Castle in Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet. We decided on a December wedding because we share a love for the Holidays and find winter to be cozy and romantic. Franklin Plaza had the elegance we desired, and it was the perfect fit for our day. Our wedding day was beautiful, romantic, emotional, and flawless. We cannot thank our vendors enough for making our day feel so special. We feel so lucky to have had all of our loved ones with us on our most memorable day.

In June of 2015,

I had just moved to Saratoga Springs for a new job. Within two short weeks. Jay and I met for the first time at Druthers which would quickly become a part of our weekly routine. . Some drinks, pretzels, beer cheese, and good conversation, it was off to a good start. I was able to sneak off to the bathroom and send a text to my mom explaining I did not want to date anyone else. My mom replied "that's great, but does he like you too!?" Fortunately, Jay felt the same way and our relationship continued to grow for the next two years in Saratoga, before a job opportunity, too good to pass up, opened up for Jay in in Boston. It was bittersweet leaving Saratoga in the Summer of 2017. After 3 years of dating, Jay proposed at my parents house in July 2018. As if I couldn't be surprised enough with our engagement, Jay, along with a little help from my mom, had already booked my dream venue, Hall of the Springs for March! Queue the tears of joy again! Even though we lived in Boston, Saratoga has always had a special place in our hearts and it also happens to be the half way point for most of our family and friends. Our wedding day exceeded all of our expectations, it couldn't have gone better! All of our vendors were wonderful and helped us make it the most special occasion to share with family and friends.
